meteorologist kari hall timing out our forecast hour by hour, and we have crews fanned out across different communities tracking that damage already adding up this morning. you're watching "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. 4:30 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. that team coverage continues for you this morning. "today in the bay's" emma goss is live. our mike inouye keeping an eye on the commute this morning. first, meteorologist kari hall has a look at where the storm is right now. it really hit us hard this morning but now things are coupling down, still some gusty winds and scattered showers moving through. in the north bay right now we're seeing the next wave of rain coming in moving across the richmond/san rafael brimming as well as as you head over to the east bay moving across the benicia bridge and will continue to see once again off and on

rain, a lot of intense storms moving through the central valley and pushing off to the east. there is more off the coast that still has yet to work into our area, and then we turn our attention to the next storm that will be coming in tomorrow. we will continue to see very active weather here as more lightning and small hail will be possible today. and then for tonight, it tapers off for just a little while, but during the time today we could see about 1 to 3 inches of rainfall. the next storm coming in tomorrow morning will continue that threat of more flooding and power outages, also kicking up some high winds, and the landslide potential as well as mud slides will be with us through the next several days, possibly weeks, because of all of the rain we've had. for the sierra another 2 to 6 feet of snow over the course of the next few days, but look at these winds. earlier this morning 71-mile-per-hour wind in los gatos. when that initial line of storms came into that area, and so
4:32 am
we're still looking at 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds through at least late morning and then going into the rest of today about 15 to 30-mile-per-hour winds still continuing and then ramping back up again early tomorrow morning as the next storm comes in. we are still in the thick of it. we're going to continue to track it hour by hour. more of that in the forecast coming up. mike, you have a look at how it's impacting the roadways. we have wet, slick roadways in many patches, washouts continuing. highway 84, again, we don't know when they will reopen through niles canyon. the light yellow is coming in now where wind is registering around the bay as well as the green and the blue. the blue is puddling and ponding. thank you for asking specifics about the color over twitter. i can address individual questions that way as well as on facebook, instagram. looking to a continued alert just before you get there is a

>> reporter: we're at the intersection of highway 1 and 101. a lot of standing water in this intersection and we're seeing cars go through it and their tires are partially submerged and it's fairly deep. there are no road closure signs here, but it isn't a good idea to be driving through it especially at a higher speed and it would be best for drivers to avoid this area. fortunately buses are still able to go through fairly easily and navigate to the parking lot. it is expected to recede over the course of today. residents near the russian river are relieved the storm didn't produce the kind of major flooding they've experienced in the past. >> the last flood was probably one of the big ones at 46 feet.

it is 4:45 for you that morning. welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay" and the latest storm system providing a long and unsettling night. a lot of passengers onboard a southwest flight out of oakland. now that plane flew to southern california but then it hit severe turbulence while descending in burbank. the pilot turned the plane around and flew back to the bay area. we spoke to two passengers who say they've never experienced such turbulence. >> the second time i thought, okay, i think we're going to get this one because i could really see the runway. probably less than 100 feet. we were really close. the plane was really struggling. we ended up climbing again. >> it was pretty scary, though. >> dangerous, too. we saw the last plane not too long ago. passengers said they did commend the crew saying they did a great

job keeping things together on that flight. i can imagine it was scary. >> they're probably glad they're back home. the quickest trip they never took. >> we flew into l.a.x. last week and it was a pretty turbulent flight because, again, the storms. we were jumping around. >> and the storms continue. people do have places to go. absolutely but you do want to get there safely. driving around the bay area we're seeing pockets of heavy rain. that will have you slowing down, allow extra time for your commute and turn on those windshield wipers as we see still some rain moving through. earlier this morning it was rocking. when that first storm came in here, those winds picked up, 50 to 70-mile-per-hour gusts and some lightning along with sheets of rain coming down. conditions have improved particularly here, but we do still have that chance of seeing more storms as we go into today
4:48 am
with some breaks in between. all of that severe weather has pushed off to the east, and it does continue to weaken. earlier this morning i was seeing about 120 lightning strikes within this area. now we're at 73, so it's starting to calm down just a bit. still that chance of lightning exists for the bay area as we get this energy coming off the coast and rolling through with this storm that is a lot colder than we've seen recently and so that also forces the air to rise more violently and produces some stronger storms. so let's talk about our reservoirs. the uvas reservoir has been overflowing causing the flooding near gilroy. a lot of our other reservoirs that are some of the larger ones are really filling up fast like the lexington reservoir. thinking about a month ago it was 19% of capacity. so that is a huge gain.
4:49 am
looking at the coyote reservoir, the east bay mud stores are at 93%. 94% on average in the north bay. we are most likely going to continue to see the numbers go up in some of the reservoirs, unfortunately, may continue to overflow. we're watching river stages. right now the greatest concern is the russian river at guerneville still flooding at this point. there will still be flooding over the next couple of days. in terms of rain, we are going to see pockets of heavy downpours moving through. once again, we're seeing a bit of a break now. still there could be some intense rainfall, gusty winds, and even some lightning and small hail. at 2:00 much of the bay area is taking a break except for the north bay and then we'll start to see another round coming in this evening out ahead the next approaching storm that is set to move in before sunrise tomorrow. this will also target the north bay with the heaviest rainfall and then we start to see
4:50 am
continues improve except for areas to the north. warmer air will push the rain back north. it will be windy. and we're still looking at gusts 30 to 40 even possibly 50 miles an hour through late morning. and then later today about 15 to 30-mile-per-hour winds and look at how it picks up for tomorrow afternoon with the next storm system 30 to 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts still within reach. that will bring down more trees. as we go through the forecast, more big storms ahead. not quieting down just yet. there will be a brief break thursday into friday. saturday is looking pretty wet and on sunday that rain continues. on monday we see a new storm system coming in and pushing to the south and maybe beyond that point a chance to at least get a couple of breathers before we do see more activity. additional rainfall for us will be about three-quarters to over 3 inches of rain.
4:51 am
more flooding with that amount of rainfall. so all of these storms lining up and continuing through at least early next week. we'll be tracking it all the impacts will be accumulating over the next few days. you're talking about a little bit of a break. we have damp roadways, slick conditions. water still kicking up. we may see some reports. haven't seen a lot of solo car crashes because the roadways are still wet. green highlighting the bay and the light yellow here is where the wind is starting to kick in. reports from the altamont pass and gusty winds overnight. the dumbarton bridge and the altamont pass. minor flooding reported for highway 12 up in napa and 780.

that might have just happened, 84 happened a while back and continues through that stretch between 680 and mission. drive times still just fine. vasco road at the minimum from marsh creek road down to 580. i mentioned the san mateo bridge. we've seen it really being pushed around. a little calmer. traffic flowing across this section just fine as you approach the high rise there's a bigger chance for gusty conditions. what they call higher profile vehicles or taller vehicles and larger big trucks. they may get pushed around a bit. back to you. this morning a well-known winery in napa valley no longer has the iconic oak tree because it toppled during the height of that storm yesterday.
4:53 am
the tree stood strong for more than 200 years but couldn't withstand the strong winds and saturated soil sending that tree crashing to the ground. the winery president says the great oak survived fires, earthquakes, but not the latest storm. >> i guess with buildings you can rebuild those, but with something like this such an emotional hit because, yeah, we can grow a new tree. we just won't get to see it. >> a long history there. an arborist has tended to the tree the last 40 years. maybe you enjoyed it if you were out there. it was one of the more popular spots for parties and picnics. >> maybe they can do something special with that oakwood. storm coverage continues. first, the wet weather isn't stopping this year's golden globes. the minor damage done to the red
