white lotus" to "house of the dragon" taking top awards in tv. the winners, if the moments, and the can't-miss fashions on display. today, wednesday, january 11th, 2023. ♪♪ from nbc news this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody, good morning. welcome to "today." it's wednesday morning. 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. good to have you with us. we've got to get to this morning's breaking news, the faa saying a major computer outage is impacting flights all across the country. here's a look at the flightaware map showing planes in the air right now. we can tell you many that are not taking off. >> this is a huge story for anybody flying today or

expecting someone the arrive. we've got a look at it right now. >> tom costello is covering it for us. so many stranded. what's the very latest you're hearing? >> if you're waking up on the west coast, you missed a heck of a morning here. this all started at about 5:30 eastern time this morning. the computer system called the notam system, it's the computer system that provides safety information to pilots, well, that went down. that system tells pilots, for example, a runway may be closed or there's construction equipment on the ramp at a certain airport or there's space activity or runway activity. it immediately created delays that started on the east coast and moved to the west coast as the morning progressed. the faa finally at about 7:00 a.m. eastern time essentially ordered all commercial flights

that were going to depart to stop, to stay in position, don't move, because of this problem. medevac flights were allowed to continue and military. but others were not to continue. at this hour we've now got 5,000 flight delays across the country just after 7:00 a.m. pacific time, almost 900 cancellations at this hour moving across the country. and as you would expect, the most affected airports are on the east coast. as i said, it's been a heck of a morning. rolling across the country this morning, airport chaos and building delays, the faa pausing all commercial domestic departures due to a major computer outage. >> i'm just praying that my

flight is still good to go because we've been planning this for two, three months. >> the system failed. the computer system that provides critical flight safety information to pilots, it's what they rely on with problems at a particular airport, anything from a closed runway to military flight operations, president biden addressing the outage this morning after being briefed by transportation secretary pete buttigieg. >> i just spoke with buttigieg. they don't know what the cause is. i told them to report to me when they find out. >> the white house press secretary added they will conduct a full investigation. they're concerned it may have a domino effect through the day. >> so that effect, we don't know the cause, as the president suggested. could it have been a cyber attack? an investigation is underway. they may not have answers today.

>> we don't have the real time information. >> having a difficult day at our airports. thank you very much. let's move to that string of storms pounding the entire state of california. new flooding leading to more evacuations and more emergency rescues. drenched roads and hillsides giving way. al's standing by with more on that. but first let's go to miguel almaguer. he's got a report west of l.a. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. you can see behind me there's a massive gaping hole in the road behind me. i want to show you some drone video of that sinkhole. at least two cars plummeted into it 35 feet down. all of the people in those vehicles were able to get out safely, but this has been a very dangerous storm, and not

everyone has been so lucky. this morning california yans waking up to more destruction with the bay area bracing for more torrential rain later today. cities usually bathed in sunshine like los angeles, san fwaush rah, ant montecito day lieued with mudslides. stranded residents pulled to safety. >> it's like two feet of mud and water coming down the street. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: these disasters killing at least 17 so far. that's more deaths than california's wildfires in the last two years. this morning authorities resuming their search for missing 5-year-old boy kyle down. his mother was rescued in their submerged wednesday when rising floodwaters swept him away. the state's beautiful beaches

now strewn with storm debris. trees toppling onto cars. streets looking like rivers. the famed muholland drive closing as hillsides begin to collapse. these historic storms drenching san francisco to san diego are some of the worst california has seen in 80 years. experts say partially to blame, climate change with the past eight years the warmest ever on record. >> what that means for us is that the atmosphere is able to hold more moisture. so the storms can be bigger, there can be more rain in them, and they are more punctuated. >> reporter: but scientists say all the rain won't solve the west's devastating drought because the already waterlogged earth can't absorb it all. now with an enormous sigh colon storm predicted to hit the bay area today, the forecast calls for more damage

and widespread destruction. >> reporter: here in southern california, the cleanup will begin, but in northern california, they're in the bull's-eye for more wet weather. the biggest concern is going to be more landslides all across california. the ground is saturated. it will be a major problem throughout the day. >> thank you so much. we turn to al now. this is just an onslaught. >> it really is. it's going to go into next week, 7 million people impacted. flood watches, flood warnings. we're seeing more rain sway into northern california, the pacific northwest. rainfall amounts anywhere from 3 to 5, even 6 inches stretching from san francisco all the way up to puget sound. snowfall amounts up to 18 inches in the sierra mountains. the first atmospheric storm brings in the first storm, second storm on saturday, third storm on sunday. the third storm is coming out of california

today it's going to bring heavy snow into the rockies causing slick travel storms will develop as the system moves east. as we move into tomorrow, look for severe weather through the southeast along the cold front, and the cold pressure that started out in california bringing rain and snow up into the northeast and new england. friday the front finally moves out, but it's going to be bringing snow showers behind it and much colder air. so the storms in california affecting a good portion of the country over the next couple of days guys breaking overnight at least six people were hurt at a stabbing attack at a paris train station. it happened in the middle of the busy morning rush hour several passengers and a police officer were among the victims attacker was shot and wounded by two off-duty police officers who were returning home from their shift. the motive unknown but a possible link to terrorism has not been ruled out. turning now to the fallout over the classified documents found at an office used by president biden before he was

elected. he is now back in washington making his first public comments about the documents' discovery and republicans are weighing in as well. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander has the story. peter, good morning. >> house republicans are crying hypocrisy, but the president's allies say he handled the discovery exactly as you should, immediately alerting the national archives and turning over the materials president biden saying he was surprised to learn his lawyers found the documents in an old office he used in washington and he didn't know what information they contained, but his lawyers are fully cooperating with the justice department review. president biden returning to the white house overnight and to an escalating controversy about those classified documents found inside his former office at the penn biden center here in washington late last year. >> people know i take classified documents, classified information seriously. >> reporter: the issue

overshadowing his visit to the north american leadership summit where he commented frontal boundary the first time less than one week before the midterms >> i immediately called th archives, turned them over to the archives, and i was briefe about this discovery and surprised to learn there were any government records that were taken there to that offers. >> reporter: two sources familiar with the matter tell nbc news in total fewer than a dozen documents were found. >> but i don't know what's in the documents. i've -- my lawyers have not suggested i ask what documents they were. >> reporter: "the new york times" citing two people familiar with the situation reports the documents included briefing materials on foreign countries from mr. biden's time as vice president. nbc news has not independently confirmed their content. the new house speaker, republican kevin mccarthy, overnight demanding answers. >> they think they are above the law. why weren't they raided? why didn't they have the fbi

coming in? they think the law doesn't apply to them. >> reporter: incoming house intelligence chair mike turner calling on the director of national intelligence to provide an immediate review and damage assessment the house oversight committee in a letter to the white house counsel expressing concern that president biden has compromised intelligence sources and methods with his own mishandling o classified documents. >> he said it was very irresponsible for president trump to take classified documents to his personal residence and have them in an unsecured location, and it appears he did the same thing. >> reporter: mr. trump, on his social media site, questions why the justice department did not announce the discovery before the election. >> peter, what do we know about the review process, what the next steps are here? >> reporter: two senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news that the u.s. attorney in chicago, the one assigned by attorney general merrick garland to investigate these classified documents, has been reviewing

delays, red cancellations. here are the latest numbers from flightaware.com. nationwide there are over 5,400 delays in and out of the u.s. and about 930 cancellations. earlier this morning the faa issued a warning, a notice, saying their computer testimony, their notam system, the notice to air mission system, it shut down. these are issues they talked about closed airspace, closed runways and equipment problems at the airport. they have gotten that back up and running and the fbi has just come out and said they have seen no evidence this is the result of a cyber attack. report be live at oakland international, bob redell, nbc bay area news. let's check the fact with kari. a lot of green. we are seeing widespread light rain across the bay area that will stay with us for a while. there may be pockets of heavy rain coming in late this morning, but it's mostly going to be focused on the north bay. we'll be watching that and the impact as rain continues. laura?

♪ we're back it is 7:30 you are looking at the airport in philly. we are following this morning's breaking news. so the faa dealing with an overnight computer outage. it's causing delays from coast to coast. more than 1,200 flights and counting at this hour. a lot of quiet runways. >> need less to say, if you are heading to the airport today, you probably definitely want to call ahead. we will have an update on where things stand from tom costello in a few minutes. a check of the other headlines. we begin in washington. the growing firestorm that surrounds newly elected congressman george santos.

the republican from new york has admitted to lying about parts of his resumé, including his education and employment history. now two house democrats filed an official complaint with the house ethics committee, hand delivering a copy of that notice to santos' office yesterday, santos insisting, quote, he has done nothing unethical. the united states will start training ukrainian troops on the patriot air defense system in oklahoma later this month. it will consist of under 100 ukrainian service members. the training is expected to take several months. patriot systems use surface-to-air missiles to destroy cruise missiles and other fast-moving airborne targets. a story everybody is talking about. we are talking about the massive billion dollars mega millions jackpot. nobody took home the prize last night, but there were 16 tickets that matched five numbers. each one of those worth a million or more. so let's look at the numbers on your screen.

the families of his victims are still looking for answers about a motive. >> an emotional time -- >> reporter: the lawyer for kaylee goncalves's family saying kohberger didn't know kaylee or madi mogen as far as they know. >> i don't know of anybody that knew him. all those girls were social, involved in the college, they were working hard, waitressing and doing different things. so the idea that he may have ran across their paths i don't think is uncommon. >> reporter: the goncalves family has been in frequent contact with investigators as they look to build their case against kohberger. >> anything that we have, we send over to the moscow police department. >> reporter: meanwhile, spring semester beginning at the university of idaho today. a semblance of normalcy returning now that a suspect is in custody. but fears remain. >> i am worried about the safety here. >> reporter: ten miles away from the university of idaho campus suspect bryan kohberger was pursuing his ph.d. in criminal justice at washington state university. investigators say campus police

there identified kohberger on november 29th after midnight connecting him to the hyundai elantra seen near the crime scene. now some students there are questioning their safety and why police waited a month to arrest him, letting kohberger remain on campus until the december break. >> we find out later he is literally a student on campus and was walking around with us. it felt like they were trying to keep it from us or something. >> reporter: the police defended that decision. >> i will 100% stand behind with the way we handled the investigation. >> reporter: with much of the focus on the trial, family and friends of the victims want people to be reminded young lives were lost. sidney mcclain, xana kernodle's childhood friend. >> one the funniest people i met, always outgoing, she was friend to everyone. >> reporter: her father todd who coached the girls gymnastics team struggling to come to terms with the crime. >> i think it comes down to just basically why.

and the new demand that it's creating a shortage and impacting diabetics. we'll have a closer look at that story tomorrow on "today." right to the news at 8:00. air travel off to a rough start this morning when a computer system that is critical for air safety went down. the faa ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures, and the impact is likely to be felt throughout the day. nbc's tom costello covers aviation and he has the latest on a developing situation. >> reporter: yeah, savannah. we do have an update. things do seem to be resuming, the faa tweeting a short time ago the following update. it says, update, normal air traffic operations are now resuming gradually across the u.s. following the overnight outage of the notam air system that we've been talking about this morning that provides safety information to the flight crews, and the ground stop has now been lifted. as you know, domestic air traffic, departures were paused

by the faa this morning until about 8:45 eastern time or so because this notice to air -- sorry. that's the old phrase. notice to computer system went down. that's critical information to pilots on everything from perhaps a closed runway, construction equipment at an airport, military air operations, all of that information is critical to pilots, and that system went down. when it went down, the faa paused all commercial domestic departures and slowly reopened it at 9:00 a.m. eastern time. at the moment, 841 flight cancellations nationwide. we've got 4,500, almost 4,600 delays nationwide and that's because of getting off to a very bad and rocky start.
