possession of semi-automatic weapons. and gun rights advocates are already vowing to fight back for the latest, let's get to brie jackson illinois is not the first state to pass this kind of legislation. >> reporter: that's right. eight other states have similar laws, including california, hawaii and much of the northeast as well as washington, d.c illinois lawmakers launched a major push to ban semi-automatic weapons in the wake of last year's mass shooting at a fourth of july parade it killed seven people and left 30 more injured in a chicago suburb >> illinois now officially prohibits the sale and distribution of these mass killing machines and rapid fire devices. i'm signing this legislation tonight so that it can take immediate effect, and we can end the sale of these weapons of war as soon as possible. >> reporter: critics of the law

have vowed swift legal action saying court challenges will overturn the law as a violation of the second amendment. and while the new legislation does not call for current owners to give up their assault weapons, it does require them to register them with the state already, sheriffs in several counties have said they will not comply with the requirement, a move the governor called political grand standing at its worst. on the national level, president biden has pushed for a new federal assault weapons ban like the one he helped pass as a senator back in 1994 that legislation was sunset in 2004 in the ten years that followed, mass shooting deaths spiked, according to the study from the journal of trauma and acute care bipartisan gun control legislation was passed last year and we're seeing its impact. federal prosecutors in new york used the law for the first time, arresting four men for firearms
