we want to begin with the top story. the rain will not let up in california. residents have been dealing with this for two weeks and new storms are rolling in this weekend. >> somara will have the forecast in just a moment. first, dana griffin is in hard hit northern california with the latest and more rain on the way, dana. >> reporter: good morning, peter. several rivers across the state are expected to exceed flood stage including the salinas river behind us. it could prove to be a cut off to the peninsula. california and the pacific northwest are battered by another round of storms. >> the storms are among the most deadly natural disaster notice modern history of our state. >> reporter: a state of 9 inches of rainfall in the last 18 days. some areas with the annual rainfall total with back-to-back storms on the way. >> that will bring widespread heavy rainfall in some locations

and heavy mountain snowfall as well in addition to gusty winds 50 to 60 miles an hour. >> reporter: bringing dditional power outages in the region. so far, 19 people have died in california and a 5-year-old is missing. federal agencies deploying critical air support to vulnerable areas. >> am i concerned? yeah. >> reporter: on friday, mud floe drove a tree into the marin county apartment building forcing people to evacuate homes. >> there was mud all over the backyard. i need to evacuate. i need to go right now. >> reporter: the pounding rain comes days after california was devastated by deadly weather. at least 45 tornadoes were acro. there have been washed out roads and calls to scenes like this.

officials concerned pressure on other levees could cause future breaks. if you received an evacuation order, officials say do not ignore it. >> the ground is saturated. it is extremely dangerous. that water can continue to rise well after the storms have passed. >> reporter: thousands remain under evacuation orders. officials remind do not walk or drive through flood waters. be aware of the surroundings. you may not be impacted by the first round, but over the coming days. peter and kristen. >> in my hometown of oakland with a ton of rain for that area. >> this has been a difficult situation for so many people out there. we want to bring in somara theodore for more on how bad the storms will be in the next few days. >> kristen and peter, this is before christmas how this has

been going on. this region of the country has been seeing multiple rounds of storms and rain derived from the atmospheric river. this will have major impact on 2 million people. here is the look at the flood watches and alerts from ft. bragg to san francisco and bakersfield again. here is the timing on all this. we will see the showers kicking up in high gear throughout the day and sticking around through saturday. we are looking at the threat of landslides and mudslides with the grounds saturated from multiple storms in the past weeks. we have another storm that will be pushing its way in on monday. the winds will be very strong with this round of storms and unfortunately that could lead to power outages. how much rain are we talking? you just heard the inches we saw in previous storms and we are looking at another 6 to 8 inches possible as we lean to the higher end of totals.

it is not just the rainfall. the snowfall. if you look further inland in lake tahoe and lone pine, possibly 6 feet of snow. again, this is an unprecedented situation. it is not just this round of storms moving in tonight, but we will see another round for monday. we will talk more about that and take a look at the forecast for the rest of the country. back to you both. >> thank you, somara. we will check in for the rest of the forecast in a few moments. breaking news from overnight and missile strikes on ukraine's capital city of kyiv. this as the u.s. and other western allies are preparing to take the biggest steps to help ukrainians fend off the russians. nbc's matt bradley is in ukraine. matt, what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, guys. the missile strikes did not setoff the air raid sirens. the ukrainians say they are ballistic missiles which are

harder to detect and intercept. this morning, new missile attacks on kyiv and across the country. the first in nearly two weeks, once again targeting civilian infrastructure. a day after russia said it is finally taking the ukrainian town of solodar. ukraine's military says the city hasn't fallen. we will never give up this soldier said. the defense of ministry said taking that city will help take the nearby city. if russia's claim is true. it is the first victory in months and comes at a crucial time in the war. western countries like the u.s. are facing increasing pressure to give ukraine powerful weapons. u.s., germany and france already pledged armored fighting vehicles. now poland and france and germany poised to sent battle tanks to ukraine. a move the pentagon supports. the heavy weapons could tip the

balance in ukraine's favor just as ukraine's leaders warn of the russian offensive that may make another assault on the capital kyiv from neighboring belarus. russian and belarusian troops seen training across the northern border two weeks ago. >> over here. >> reporter: and anton has been tracking moves across the border for months. >> this is anticipation of another offensive. >> reporter: now preparing for the potential scenario that may come. this trench is unused. it was built in april after the initial invasion. you can see it is all fresh timber waiting for a fresh offensive. fears of a new attack as the brutal war enters a new year. in the last few minutes, the prime minister rishi sunak will

send tanks to ukraine. peter and kristen. >> matt bradley, thank you. back in washington, growing calls around the classified documents discovered at president biden's home and former office from his time as vice president. for its part, officials from the white house are not saying much as republican lawmakers demand more information. monica alba is at the white house with all of this. monica. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. a lot we still don't know how this happened. including why the white house waited so long to reveal the president was in possession of classified material and why the search was conducted and who had access in the interveing years. as the president's democratic allies grow frustrated with the white house response so far. mounting questions this morning over president biden's handles of classified documents from time as vice president. the president ignoring reporters twice friday when pressed on how

the sensitive records ended up in his private office and wilmington, delaware home. the white house short on details. >> not going to get into specifics from here. >> reporter: pledging to cooperate with the department of justice review completely. >> we respect that process and that's what we will do. >> reporter: including working with the newly appointed special counsel. >> special counsel to investigate the biden mishandling episode. >> reporter: the move republicans in congress called for all week. given the prosecutor investigates the mar-a-lago matter of the that probes involves hundreds of classified records seized by the fbi after mr. trump refused to return them. on friday, the oversight committee requested more information from the biden white house following the locations and contents of the classified material. including nbc's reporting that

about treasury secretary janet yellen issued a warning on friday that the u.s. has only a matter of days before it reaches its debt limit. now it is up to a divided congress to figure all of this out. you could call this the first stress test for the new congress. it could be contentious with the white house and congress? >> reporter: absolutely. secretary yellen will have to use extraordinary measures in a matter of days to keep paying the nation's bills. buying time so congress can work on a solution. this is ramping up to be a big fight in washington. the first battle after the speakership battle. republicans call out reckless spending. if the nation were to default, it could cause harm to the economy and global financial stability. the white house is urging lawmakers to act quickly with president biden looking for a bipartisan agreement.

good morning, thank you for joining us on this saturday, january 14th. i'm kira klapper. this morning we're getting an inside look at the power of a north bay landslide and the damage it left behind. nearly 20 people are now displaced as the fight continues to threaten to take homes down a hillside. this is inside of a fairfax home where a family has lived for about three years. the landslide crashed into their patio door, into their dining room, broke their kitchen window. the home has now been red tagged along with the sister's home next door.

that day. >> at least one administrator was notified in the timeline we are reviewing and aware that student had a potential with a weapon on campus. >> reporter: the superintendent saying the school staffer searched the child's backpack, but found nothing. hours after the search, the student shot his teacher in the chest with the .9 millimeter handgun. the 25-year-old hailed a hero for getting the rest of the class to safety. >> she saved lives. >> reporter: she remains hospitalized in stable condition. parents now demanding answers on how this could have happened. mara has two kids going to the school. >> a whisper of the gun should have been a phone call to the police with multiple school

>> this morning, tess is sharing her story in the hopes of helping others. erin is here with her story and message. erin, good morning. >> good morning. thank you for having me here. it is an important message. tess holiday has battled for decades. she never believed it could be anorexia because of her larger size. when she went public with thing diagnosis, she realized she wasn't alone. she is taking a candid approach to all of it. >> last week was the first time that i have ever passed out from not feeding myself. it was scary. >> reporter: tess is honest about having setbacks. the 37-year-old has had many in the years since diagnosed with atypical anorexia. an eating disorder that shares

the same symptoms as anorexia except extreme thinness. holliday was resistant. >> she said i can't diagnose you. if i could, i would as anorexia. i remember thinking i thought you were a professional. don't you see the size of me? >> reporter: after seeking help from the medical professional, the mother of two was in disbelief. that skepticism was shared by others around her. when holiday shared the news with followers, the backlash was instant. >> do you feel like people who have what we have come to know as anorexia or what we believe is anorexia doubt you or doubt the diagnosis? >> well, there are definitely people out there that are, you know -- the internet is a dark place. there are a lot of people that feel offended that i would even

suggest that i'm fat and that i have a restricted eating disorder. >> reporter: many of us associated with healthy and unhealthy. most don't discriminate by body size. anorexia is a disorder and many like tess suffer from the same obsessions around meals and body image and weight gain. >> you can't possibly know what kind of eating disorder someone has by the size of their body. >> reporter: the doctor from the renfro center say the vast majority suffer from eating disorders don't look sick or underweight. >> there is a miss conception if you have fat on your body you will be protected from the medical issues of starving. >> reporter: she says all patients with eating disorders are at risk for high blood pressure and irregular menstruation.
