edition of nbc bay area, i'm gia vang. >> rain is almost, repeat, almost behind us. one more storm moving in before we get a break from all the wet weather. >> we're tracking all the incoming rain and the problems it is bringing. among them, road closures and flooding across the bay area. take a look at that. this is the north bay where part of highway 37 is closed because of at that flooding right there. and in contra costa county, a massive sinkhole is swallowing up ground near a church. >> the latest in our series of strong storms, bringing soaking rain into the bay areas really starting to fill in on the radar view. you see that yellow and orange. more as we head to san jose. look at the color coding.

we're switching to precipitation type. south of livermore toward mt. hamilton, a mix. morgan hill, some of the evening weather updates have boosted rain totals here, especially around the uvas watershed. into the guadalupe watershed. those are areas that will likely see enhanced runoff. flood watches are up on monday for most of the bay area. and the coastal and bay flood advisories, a combination of high tide and runoff. once we move past that storm which has a chance for

thundershowers on monday, we begin to see things calming down. flood watches end tomorrow night and drier weather ahead in the seven-day forecast. we'll take a closer look at that in about ten minutes. storm-related issues continue to bring problems on the roads, check out the intersection of 121 and 12 in sonoma county, clearly flooded. not the only problem drivers in the north bay area are facing. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. >> sometimes it will get all the way backed up past our driveway. >> reporter: lin knows when highway 37 is closed to novato. drivers taking a detour go down her street. >> it will shut. and they have made improvements, so it's not as often as it used to be. >> reporter: about a two-mile stretch is closed. >> the novato creek has overflowed its banks, the

water's poured onto the road. we're trying to pump it out. we're making headway, but we expect more rain today. and tonight. and we also are working against some high tides. >> reporter: crews were working today at the closure, using six pumps to push water off the road, making some progress, but the area is flat and low. >> we don't want people to get ahead of themselves. just because one of the lanes is dry doesn't mean that we're not getting more water eventually coming down with future rainstorms and releases from the lakes and streams to the north of that area. >> reporter: that makes reopening difficult to predict. >> i think it's just something we've gotten used to, and we plan around and we find alternate routes, and we delay certain things that aren't urgent. so i'd say it's an inconvenience at times. we have a basement that's not

common in california, but we do. our sump pump's got overload and we've had some water. but, again, it's part of the territory. >> highway 37 isn't the only road closure bay area drivers are having to navigate. most are in the north bay. highway 1 is closed in multiple areas in sonoma county. the big sinkhole on highway 29 still has lanes closed. in the east bay, from main street in sunol. and in the east bay. state route 130 closed near quimby road. >> and on top of that, creeks and reservoirs in santa clara

county could start spilling over. >> we stopped by two reservoirs to survey the latest. >> reporter: the santa clara valley water district made room in a reservoir today because they're expecting the nearby lexington reservoir to start spilling over tomorrow. so they're not expecting flooding in the nearby communities. as another burst of rainfall poured into the lexington reservoir, people flocked to get a look at something they hadn't seen in years. >> we drove by and saw how high it was and wanted a closer look. >> reporter: a nearly overflowing reservoir. >> we've been really worried about the low water, and now it's just insane. i've never seen it like this before. >> reporter: this reservoir spilled over due to heavy rain back in 2017. and several times since then. the santa clara water district suspect it is will happen again monday. >> given the low volume, we are

brought you last night. this is a look in an area in golden gate park where an elderly woman was killed bay tree branch that fell. the branch has already been cleaned up. police say a jogger spotted the woman next to the branch, called 911. paramedics tried to save the woman but she died at the scene. belmont police say this part of san juan boulevard is closed indefinitely. and can you see why. part of the hillside came rushing down yesterday afternoon. the slide is threatening the stability of one home and testing the nerves of neighbors. sgrf we would never expect this land to fall. we're concerned, too, because we're at the bottom of the hill. we know hey, if this house could go down, how about, our house seems okay, but the houses on top of us, they could slide down, too. >> the owners of the house where

the slide occurred were not home. a big sinkhole opened near a contra costa county church. we got an up close look and the problems it's causing. >> reporter: church leaders are grateful the church itself wasn't harped. but across the parking lot and into the garden on the church grounds is a different story. jerry brussko does work for the church of the good shepherd. between the stat seuss a new feature you can't take your eyes off. >> this sinkhole is about 23 feet deep and 30 feet across. >> reporter: a crew noticed it wednesday. since then, it's grown, filling up with water, gobbling up sandbags, tree limbs, even a 15-foot light pole. so there's still a 15-foot pole in there. >> yeah, buried somewhere p there.

>> reporter: the water flooded nearby harbor street and also took out an entire chunk of the church's wall. parishioners say mass went on as usual sunday. they're thankful the building it self is okay. >> god made insurance for these type of issue. >> reporter: harbor where the church is located is still closed. no evacuation orders have been issued, despite some of the flooding locally. in pittsburg, alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. let's take you to santa cruz county where they're keep ago close eye on the san lorenzo river, and can you see y it is raging. individual grow this afternoon shows a massive tree floating down that river. fortunately it moved through, otherwise it could have created a serious and literal logjam.

daryl hardy set up a zip line when he thought the main road might go out. he's happy he did. last weekend the bridge washed away. he thought it might, tan did, cutting off grizzly flat road. several families would have been completely stranded if not for mr. hardy's zip line. >> >> we live in the woods, you have to be preened. we have seven households up here. some are in their 80, 70, 60s, as we are, and as young as 3 years old. >> he put that in new year's weekend and the tiny neighborhood has had to rely on the zip line for weeks now, carry things back and forth, get people back and forth. the power has been out most of 2023, and there are lots of downed trees as well. engineers can't start repairing the bridge until water levels go down. >> our team is posting pictures,

okay, we have an update on those projectile shootings. at least seven cars were hit on brentwood between homecoming way and sunset road. the projectile may have been fired from a pellet or bb gun. a 31-year-old man was arrested. someone spotted a body in the water near the san francisco ferry building.

police got the call about 10:00 a.m. shortly afterwards, crews pulled the body out of the water. it does not seem like there was foul play. and a body's been found in the south bay. on kiley boulevard at about 11:30 this morning, police collected evidence. they're not releasing much information on how the person died but investigators are calling it suspicious. early this morning, a georgia defensive lineman and a staff member died in a car crash. paramedics rushed chandler lacroix to the hospital where she died. lacroix was driving the car. the witness described what happened moments after the crash. >> i just hear this bang. power goes out and comes back

high along the embarcadero. in pacifica, waves are generally always big but they're bigger than usual. a good reminder to stay out of the water and away from the surf. i'm not sure how many people were thinking of grabbing a day at the beach tomorrow, what will it be like? >> not a good day. the coast and bay flood advisory, due to the high tide and the flood. and the flood watches expire tomorrow at midnight. and the worst of the rain will finally start to move out. but it's not moving out now. around the golden gate bridge, look at those downpours. every time a car goes by. 47 degrees right now and an east-southeast wind at 9 miles per hour. and you might notice today it is chilly outside. we now have snow levels close to 4,000 feet. our temperatures aren't in the

50s and 60s with the rain. they're in the 40s. more rain into san jose. another 24-hour cycle of rain at times during the day tomorrow. highest totals, again, will be focussed in the santa cruz mountains. i think there's the potential of another two to four inches of rain and flood watches continuing until about midnight tomorrow night. look at the reservoir recovery. i want to show you this going back before the stretch of wet weather. that's how things looked mid december. north to south we're above capacity, you can see east bay mud close to 100%. lexington climbing. tu hour, about that far away from spillway at 99.6. this is a 66% jump in just the last 45 days.

you see we begin the day in the 40s. the worst of the rain morning to midday. the rain will start to move to the south. toward the evening the rain should be moving out heading into monday night. but right now the rain is still in the process of moving in. that's snow by the way around mt. hamilton showing up in blue. there's a look at the downpours. golden gate bridge right there and into the north bay, the north wind starts to take hold and the area of low pressure scoots to the south. that should allow for some clearing to develop. there's a bit after disconnect from the mid-level moisture. a lot of it is heading to southern california. it's that surface low that will head to the santa cruz mountains. hour by hour, things begin to

transition into the south as we head into the afternoon and evening. the heavier showers start to head out of the south bay. then after that we should catch a break tuesday. one more weaker system dropping by on thursday, and there's no atmospheric river attached to it, as can you see, thursday morning rain totals here do look pretty light. we're looking at about .10 of an inch of rain. after that, things do dry out for a considerable amount of time. not just for a day or through next weekend. but right now it looks like all the way to the beginning of next week. the biggest storm in the series for the week happening right now into tomorrow morning. slight chance of those thursday morning showers. nothing close to what we're seeing tonight. then next weekend and beyond, trending drier. the seven-day has not looked like that, as you saw, since mid december. been a while. we'll get an extended run of dry weather. >> a lot of people looking forward to that. >> my favorite part of the forecast, when you said it's

spacex launched its most powerful rocket from the kennedy space center this afternoon, and it was quite the sight. some could see the rocket blasting off from many miles away. it's the equivalent of three falcon 9 rockets strapped together. it has the ability to carry large payloads to the moon and mars. it was a very classified mission for the u.s. space force. the two boosters successfully landed back at the space center. up next at 9:30, a close call on the runway. two planes nearly collide at an east bay airport. the road to tahoe is a very risky one tonight. what you need to know if you're thinking about heading that way.

as you drop into fremont, you may see snow on the tops of the mountains. there you see the rain into san jose. you can see more rain around the santa cruz mountains as well. the make of the rain will be between now and 3:00 a.m. and the focus should be central bay and south bay, as you see this area of low pressure's actually going to curl up and head right across the big sur coast, likely to take some of the bigger rain totals. morgan hill, watch out for that runoff flooding that we could see for your morning commute, especially areas south of san jose and out of santa cruz mountains. the flood watch is up through midnight on monday, one change with this particular storm is the combination of high tide, runoff issues, plus a little bit of wind will make it look more like a king tide.
