first want to talk about that sunshiny day. we haven't had that in a while. >> grab the sunglasses. it's been so long since we've had to use them and you also need a coat, so dig that out of the closet, too. we are starting out at 34 degrees in santa rosa. it's 37 in napa. 35 in concord. a chill in the air. we are going to see some sunshine later this morning so we're prepping for that but also the cool temperatures in the low 40s right now. and then our high temperatures for today. into the low to mid-50s. you are seeing changes on two bridges. the crowd starts to build so

there's now a delay out of oakland and slowing for the sensors across the span from the toll plaza things are evening out. another issue, not highway 37 yet. both of the eastbound lanes are open. the second bridge we're talking about reports that mid span there is an electric vehicle that does not have any charge left. so far everything is looking all right. just some slowing in san jose. a much-needed break is here. for some the impact is over look at all that mud.

>> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live for us in the oakland hills, one of the areas facing a lot of cleanup out there. i imagine landslides would be an ongoing concern out there. >> reporter: i just talked to a resident where that landslide took place behind me and he says it has been a problem for the past few days. he says residents were trying to cone off this area because they had a landslide that took place on saturday. that was during the storm when we had the heavy rainfall. he said the hillside came down. even as we experience this break in the rain today, the concern level is high especially when it comes to these landslides. >> oh, it's stressful.
6:03 am
it goes down across my property. keeping a close eye on it for sure. >> reporter: a lot of concern there on his part. thankfully. let's look at the berkeley hills having landslide issues there. this one into the newly remodeled home that you see there. those images are stunning. a huge amount of dirt inside the home as a result of the landslides. no injuries to homeowners. they have relocated and the home is red tagged. the storm's impact statewide. these are some numbers we're seeing from the east bay times. we've had nine atmospheric river storms. as far as how much rain we're talking about 24.5 trillioningly gallons of water. we're talking about a good
6:04 am
amount of rainfall in these past few weeks. and overall we've seen over 500 landslides statewide. pg&e and east bay m.u.d. may handle the cleanup behind me but it could take a few days. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> we're seeing these messes everywhere. thank you, pete. from the east bay to the peninsula last week's storm taking a piece of hillside forcing families out, so this landslide started to descend saturday at san juan boulevard in belmont. both homes affected are red tagged temporarily until they can survey the area. the road leading into the neighborhood also closed. neighbors say this is one of many small landslides in the area. fortunately no one was hurt. the road closure from this slide is indefinite. president biden will get an

up close look at the damage from more than two weeks of storms. the white house made the announcement last night saying the president will visit the central coast on thursday. the president plans to meet with first responders to get a better handle on recovery efforts and the kind of federal support that is now needed. the president's upcoming visit comes with a storm cloud of a different kind in the white house, in this case the fallout surrounding classified documents found in his private office and delaware home. a special counsel is now investigating and republicans are raising all sorts of red flags. "today in the bay's" brie jackson joins us live. so far the president is staying very quiet. >> reporter: good morning, laura. sources tell nbc news president biden is frustrated with the ongoing backlash regarding the classified documents found and he doesn't feel the response to the news has been handled well. president biden once again ignoring questions from
6:06 am
reporters regarding his handling of classified material. >> how do you think the classified documents got into your boxes? >> reporter: despite the silence, republicans are demanding answers. >> are there more documents? is there an inventory what the bidens have that's still missing? we have no answers to many questions. >> reporter: close to a dozen documents were found at mr. biden's private office in washington, d.c., including at least one document marked top secret. there were also two batches at his delaware home, requesting visitor logs citing national security implications. the white house and u.s. secret service both saying they do not maintain those records because it's a private residence. >> this is so wrong this is another example of a two-tier system of justice in america and one reason republicans are so outraged over this whole process and the hypocrisy of the biden administration. >> reporter: the gop is vowing
6:07 am
to investigate the matter. >> we're getting a lot of whistle-blowers. >> reporter: a special counsel is investigating the storage of records at both locations. president biden's supporters are standing firm. >> i think the president and his administration are cooperating. >> reporter: the president's personal attorney insisting they cannot release certain details relevant to the investigation while it is ongoing. the white house is blasting republicans saying that they are playing or politicizing this, you and also saying the president takes the handling of classified documents seriously. >> brie live from washington, thank you. a very interesting story here. so chp now looking for a thief who led police on a bizarre chase involving a stolen ambulance. that drama played out last night in outer sunset where paramedics were just about to load a

6:09 am
has been piling up. the sierra snowpack is at 246% of its normal amount of snow. if we stretch it out to april 1st without another snowflake we are going to end the season with an above normal snowpack. now an additional 6 to 10 inches of snow with the next system that will be coming in and through the bay area that means a little bit of rain, how much we'll get coming up in a few minutes. if you're hitting the roads you may need to stop at the gas station. we're getting back to this because the weather and conditions aren't such a huge issue right now. the familiar arco from mill valley's best in marin county $3.77. san jose leads santa clara county with the quick stop at

good tuesday morning. it is 6:13 and a lot more people are heading back to work, back to school and we're taking a look at emeryville with a lot of people already up and out the door. chilly temperatures in the low 40s and we have sunshine today. rain back in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. we're looking at palo alto, north 101 with the taillights past university toward marsh. a good volume of traffic and great conditions on the roadways. farther north from here there may be slowing through san mateo. a couple of new reports on the grid. i'll sort them out. it looks like there may be a traffic break the next few minutes. full disclosure the numbers on mip board this morning are the same as they were yesterday.

musk often uses the number 420, slapping for smoking pot. the judge in the case has already ruled musk was not telling the truth to investors. the court hearings will be about what to do about that. musk's legal team wanted the trial moved to texas because it claimed it could not find 15 people in san francisco who had a neutral or favorable opinion of musk. the judge denied the change of venue. marcus and laura, here is something to watch. china says not only is its economy slowing, its population is getting smaller. it's experiencing more deaths than births. declining birth rates are a worry in every country because it means fewer young people paying into the system to support the older generation. it, too, is declining. as we were discussing earlier, if you want to support the older people you need more people behind them.

6:20 am
when you compare that to what we typically see for this date, we're in a lot of spots more than double the normal amount of rainfall. i mean all of that rain for the year over the course of three weeks. marin water at 100%. lexington 102. 107 at the coyote reservoir and 103 at the uvas reservoir. statewide we still have work to do. these are larger reservoirs that take longer to fill up. the four largest are only at 44% of total capacity. the atmospheric river has dipped well to the south. one more storm system approaching the pacific northwest. that will start to move in to the north "today in the bay" tomorrow afternoon.
6:21 am
we see the rain in the north bay. 7:00 around santa rosa and the rest of the bay area late tomorrow evening but clearing out thursday morning. during that time most of us will see a tenth to a quarter inch, up to half an inch of rainfall. once that moves through, we are back to the dry weather. no more rain in the forecast through at least next wednesday. it will be nice to get the sunshine but it will be chilly out there. it's january. a lot of our spots near or dealing with freezing and frosty conditions. our highs only reach into the mid to upper 50s. we'll see that continue through at least next monday. mike, you are looking at a

6:37 am
first, car insurance. the insurance information institute says pothole damage is usually covered provided you have collision coverage. your deductible will apply and that's usually $500 to $1,000. but you might be able to get that back. more on that in a minute. if you have minor damage, say $100 or $200 worth, your insurance might not kick in. progressive says in many instance it is doesn't make sense to file a claim. one thing that might make sense is seeking reimbursement from the agency that maintains the road where you hit the pothole. for example, all these drivers hit the same pothole on 101. caltrans maintains 101, so they could theoretically all file a claim with caltrans to get paid in full or get reimbursed their deductible. here is how. download form ld-0274 from the caltrans website. it's only two pages long and has basic fields to fill out what happened, where and when. it asks how much the pothole cost you. caltrans wants two written estimates or one paid receipt.
6:38 am
when you are done, sign it and mail it to your local caltrans district. for the bay area that's district four. don't wait. your deadline to file a claim is six months after the incident. >> we certainly saw so many potholes, and big ones, in the bay area. >> huge ones. 92 we'll talk about in a second. chris talked about how to get that refund and money back, how to report the problem. we can all help each other. folks like san jose, oakland, they have an app dedicated to reporting issues like potholes and more road conditions, utility problems. and if you can't find the app for your area dial 311 and report that, get the word out. help each other. >> we'll see more and more of them. >> absolutely. let's look at the folks on the roadways with the speed sensors. looking at niles canyon. this wasn't reported by 311, i don't think. people knew the entire hillside came across. now there's standing water as well and now the sullivan bridge

is also closed coming through niles. so a lot of issues as we come out of the rain, we still have to clean up. that's not accessible right now. we know about that. we have a smooth flow of traffic down to that portion of the tri-valley, 680 builds more. so does 84. those freeways are open on this side of the niles canyon area. as we look at the build out of the altamont, nothing unusual there. highway 4, highway 37 with some slowing. there is an issue there. we're starting to see more slowing. remember, one of those westbound lanes still closed because of that flooding that happened. kari, it's very close to the water line. even during king tides we have the possibility of closing one lane on 37. we've had flooding, potholes, all of these issues because we had 11 storms in 20 days. take a look at how much water fell from all of those storms. kentfield had over 24 inches of rainfall. and a lot of these spots, this was our year's worth of rain all over the course of a couple of
6:40 am
weeks. and in danville we had 19 1/2 inches of rainfall, redwood city 14. over 14 inches of rain there. in the south bay anywhere from 4 to 15 inches of rain, which in all was about three to five times our average january rainfall. and we're still watching out for flooding because of the run-off from that for our coastal areas as well as the low lying areas. heads-up about that through 9:00. scott? coming up on "today in the bay," we'll drill down into the issue of visitor logs for presidents. plus -- it's important you meet someone that is like you so you can help each other through hard times. >> helping young people understand and cope. ahead we're going to introduce to you a bay area teenager trying to ease the uncertainty for families impacted by cancer. 6:40 right now. stay with us.
