forecast. we enjoyed the sun yesterday, a little rain making a comeback. it would be nice to space it out more but we are going to see one more wave of rain and then we'll catch a bigger break as we take a look at what we'll be talking about. it is cold as you head out the door. in the mid-30s and upper 30s, palo alto we're in the low 40s. as you head out for the east bay commute you don't need the umbrella or the windshield wipers at least not for now. temperatures in the low 40s here. this system approaches and starts to make its way into the bay area. it will be a quick-moving round of rain and coming late this evening. at 6:00 we're starting to see it pick up around ukiah and then for san francisco more like 9:00 to 10:00 tonight and then going into the tri-valley, into the

south bay around midnight. once again it will be in and out and we'll be done with it by tomorrow among at this time. and we'll be talking more about what else is ahead heading into the weekend. overnight crews are starting to move. i thought i saw traffic pause for a bit. i believe the crew on the span has cleared from just around the south tower. a smooth flow of traffic and they haven't moved that center divide just yet. crews were there overnight because they were able to be there and they're clearing now. highway 37 not clear. one lane blocked because of water coming up in the king tides and coastal flood advisories. kari talked more about that. more hillside slippage so that's still closed and many other passes with smaller surface streets as well. reports of a car fire on 24. still getting details.

we do have the sensors slowing as you travel north on 680. the pattern looks like they are clearing that construction. those crews also there in the northbound direction. i'll get an update from this and will bring it to you coming up. the rain makes a return following weeks of wet weather. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live for us in oakland hills where crews are still work to go clean up landslides. i would imagine crews will have to work quickly. >> reporter: we're back here on st. andrews road where they had two landslides in a span of three days and, look, they are making pretty good progress. there was still a lot of debris and trees, able to push that out. some of that mud and sludge did slide over to the house. this isn't the only city dealing with storm cleanup.

pg&e dealing with power line issues because we see winds hit the entire bay area during these storms. talking about san francisco, the cleanup continues after flooding in those areas. for folks that are familiar with 17th and folsom, it was really hit hard by that flooding on new year's eve. a lot of business owners had sewage on the streets so they had a lot of cleanup and it damaged more than 40 cars it at this local repair shop. this is what they had to say about it. >> they say like 16 inches. >> reporter: in sunol you had a landslide coming down on an ace train that was heading to san

marina middle school. the main reason for the meeting a series of car windows smashed in the area sunday night. chief scott said hundreds more officers were needed and d.a. jenkins addressed those who disagreed with the city's current response. >> what i recognize we're in a state nobody believes there are any consequences for their actions and i am working day and night to make sure they understand -- >> at the end of the meeting the main agreement was that there needs to be another town hall to address the issues. lawyers for an ex-police officer who killed george floyd in 2020 are expected to ask for a new trial today. derek chauvin is seeking to have his sentence thrown out on the grounds that his high-profile case was tainted by publicity and deprived him of a fair trial. chauvin was convicted and sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison. he and three other officers were arrested after he was recorded holding floyd to the ground and pressing his knee to his neck.

after nearly nine minutes floyd lost consciousness and died. 5:06 right now. president biden continues to ignore questions offer his handling of classified documents. >> however, white house officials are speaking up as the special counsel investigation is under way. "today in the bay's" brie jackson, the white house is facing intense criticism regarding his handling of the matter. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, marcus, laura. deflecting criticism it's holding or withholding information about president biden's handling of classified documents and accusing republicans of faking outreach. president biden remaining tightlipped about the classified documents found at his former office and his private residence in delaware leaving the white house to do damage control.

>> the president and his team rightfully took action when they learned the documents existed. >> reporter: the justice department has not told the white house that it cannot talk about the facts of the case, still, the white house is only providing limited details amid growing calls for transparency. mr. biden's personal attorneys found the first batch of documents less than a week before midterm elections but the discovery was not revealed publicly until recently. >> why did we not find out about it until 60-plus days later? and then we only found out about it because of an investigative report. >> reporter: with even more documents found just last week, republicans are drawing comparisons to the documents fbi agents seized from former president trump's mar-a-lago residence. >> is the same push behind it? it just does not seem fair.

this one will not tap into the deep tropical moisture and will be in and out of here quickly so we are expecting it to move in later on this evening. we do have a dry start as we take a look in dublin. we are in the upper 30s. they'll be with us through 3:00. sun and clouds throughout the morning, we're headed for the low 50s and coastline. a coastal flood advisory and low lying areas are still seeing a lot of that run-off going down into those areas and still the potential of flooding into 4:00 today and our reservoirs are doing great. we are seeing them over capacity for a lot of spots like lexington reservoir at 106% of capacity, still running very high but we're tracking one more round of rain that may bring these levels up a little bit more. still concerned about flooding. mike, as you head out the door,

couple developments. stocks took a beating after goldman reported its financials. retail sales data today. tesla starts its federal lsuit trial in san francisco. microsoft will cut jobs. cnbc says many of the cuts will come from the engineering department. microsoft had layoffs. today's could be as big as 5%. now based on published employee numbers that's 11,000 people. we'll talk more about how to survive a layoff coming up after the next break. updated prices on that twitter auction which continues through this afternoon. twitter selling off stuff from its offices. this light-up twitter bird $22,000. this chair a 20% auction fee. some people pointing out you could buy this chair and get it delivered from a furniture store for less money, but, hey, it

wouldn't be from twitter. some surprises on this year's list of best airlines. delta is number one. that's not a surprise necessarily. a lot of people like delta but take a look at the number three spot, southwest airlines, delta, followed by alaska and then southwest, united and alallegia. they date back to september. that's why southwest is number three. the meltdown is not included when they consider their ratings. it's fair to say southwest is not likely to appear so high next year. american and spirit, frontier and jetblue comes in last. i think some people will be surprised. jetblue is largely based in new york and the upper northeast which is where it gets such bad

>> a brick. >> when i upgraded from my pager i had a nokia phone, a flip phone back in the day. >> wow. >> mine was called a computer. >> you've got mail. >> what's old is new. let's also talk about all of the rain we've had and it will be new again, too. we are starting out with a look outside in san francisco where we start out very chilly but it is dry and we're going to be talking about king tides. along the coastline dealing with extremely high tides late morning and extremely low tides in the evening. here is why. the sun is at its closest point to the earth and the moon at its closest point to the earth so all of that gravitational pool is going to make the waves come up higher and further inland.

we will be watching out for that and you do want to make sure if you are going to be out there especially at high tide time that you never turn your back to the water or any time for that matter because it will be very dangerous. we are also going to see temperatures today staying on the cool side. mid to upper 50s. then the heavier coat earlier tomorrow morning. some spots in the north bay will start out near freezing and we could see frosty conditions. we have one more shot that will reinforce the chilly air we're already feeling as well as a little bit of rain. the time line starts at 6:00 in the evening for areas further to the north approaching santa rosa and getting heavier shortly there after that. for san francisco more like 10:00 moving into oakland as well as concord and fairfield and then for san jose it's around midnight and then we're

in for some clearing skies by tomorrow morning. so we're going to quickly see the raindrop about a tenth to a quarter inch of rain and it may be up to half an inch or more for areas further to the north. then we're in for a stretch of dry weather and it's going to stay with us as we go into next week. it's nice to have a chance to let all of that water soak in. we can enjoy some sunshine but it won't be any warmer. take a look at those temperatures especially in the mornings where we dip down into the low 30s in some spots. going into the afternoon upper 50s extending into the weekend but it will be nice for everything going on and all of the things we've had to cancel recently we'll be able to do that under sunshine. mike, you are checking on the san mateo bridge. because kari and i share cameras, the san mateo bridge, we saw some slowing. kari said, hey, isn't that much

and clouds throughout much of the morning into the early afternoon before this system drops in. a quick moving cold front will bring us another round of rain and for the north bay it starts about 6:30 this evening up around ukiah approaching santa rosa and moving into san francisco around 10:00 tonight. for san jose more like midnight and already moving out by 2:00 a.m. once again this will sweep across the bay area quickly and bring us much lighter amounts of rain. but we're still watching for the impacts of all of the rain that we've had recently and then colder temperatures settling in. mike, you were saying our view of the golden gate was busy. it's calmed down. i do believe there was one more crew just over the bridge that cleared in the last few minutes which is why traffic was held up just for a few. there's more build here on the east shore freeway, the berkeley curve. taillights traveling down the east shore freeway in through

emeryville out of berkeley and over to the bay bridge. that's the direction they're traveling. your commute is starting to build just a bit. one exclamation point, where there's still a full closure perhaps alvarado road. some mud on the roadway. smaller spots like that around the bay will continue and then larger spots like highway 84. niles canyon is still block through that portion of the tri-valley. a smooth drive, the rest of the highways and freeways and restrictions for highway 92. 17 people are dead including ukraine's interior minister after a helicopter went down outside of kyiv. this as new video of the fiery scene following the crash which happened close to a kindergarten. at least four children also among the dead. 22 other people were among those hurt. the cause of the crash is not immediately clear but comes as ukraine's war with russia approaches the 11th month mark.

president volodymyr zelenskyy is calling the incident a tragedy. the first homicide of the year is under investigation. a man was shot around 7:30 last night. he was taken to the hospital but later died. police are withholding the man's identity. in just a few hours the santa clara valley water authority will discuss what to do to keep unhoused people from living in creek beds. now this comes as we've been seeing all month they're in serious danger during the heavy rains. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with more on action that is expected to happen today. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. the waters are starting to recede in our creeks and rivers all around the bay area, but it's not going to be enough for people to live safely near those creek beds, and that's why the valley water authority is going to have that discussion today.

you saw the danger as valley water, san jose police and the new mayor himself went along creeks and rivers asking people, urging people to leave. many people did relocate and some found shelter at warming centers but that was the temporary solution. today valley water will hold a discussion on the long-term solution. that meeting is coming up at noon. if you want to attend in person, if you want to attend virtually can you find the zoom link at valleywater.org. a similar discussion in oakland as well regarding the wood stream encamencampment. they wanted to clear people out. there is a temporary restraining order barring them from doing that. before anything changes there is a zoom hearing scheduled for february 3rd. now the breaks in the rain won't be long enough for a solution everywhere. if you know somebody who is living unhoused along a creek

bed, urge them to find a different place. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. we are learning the wharf in capitola damaged by storms will be closed for a year. one of the businesses on the wharf made that announcement on social media. huge waves, some approaching 40 feet, battered the wharf leaving a huge chunk missing. meantime fema is adding monterey county to the major declaration. the ag field of salinas. damage between $40 million and $50 million. the declaration will open federal assistance to people and businesses affected and this comes as president biden is expected to visit the central coast to tour all of that damage. we will bring you live coverage starting tomorrow morning on "today in the bay" and throughout the president's visit. we will also be streaming on roku, amazon fire tv, apple tv and online as well as our

nbcbayarea.com. rain means snow in the sierra. a live look at the palisades tahoe camera. a lot of snow at the top of the lift. we could see up to 11 inches. >> adding to what they already experienced up there. it's been amazing when we talk about the fact they've gotten all of the snow that they need for the year within the course of, like, three or four weeks. we're right now still well over what we typically see for this date. we're at 251% of normal in spots like palisades they've measured over 350 inches of snow. and even if we take it out to the april 1st average, we will still be at 124% of what's normal. so hope flip we do eventually see a little bit more snow after tonight. but then we will have a stretch of dry weather we're expecting and it's almost cold enough to snow in some parts of the bay

area. we're in the mid-30s right now as you get ready to head out the door. we will continue to see more cold mornings over the next several days. as we get the reinforcing shots of chilly air and we return to something that we normally see in january, some chilly weather. headed to the mid to upper 50s today in the south bay reaching 54 in danville and 55 in oakland. for san mateo we're headed for 57 degrees today. the north bay reaching the low to mid-50s. we'll talk more about that rain coming in tonight in a few minutes. mike, you are looking for traffic to build out of the east bay. more traffic flowing but no backup and no stopping and no metering lights not activated as far as reports go anyway. a smooth drive across and out of oakland there but a little build on the incline. out of vallejo, west in to

novato still only one lane available because of continued restrictions. earlier flooding and king tides continue with the issue for the coastal flooding. highway 4, a little build. there may be a new crash so i'll follow up with chp on that one. restrictions westbound lanes are not open but you can travel both directions because of one-way traffic control. you will be able to pass the sinkhole and it's proven to be a slower drive between 280 and highway one. no drive here between mission and 680 because ace train re-established service and the first ace train of the morning made it through the area where we had that mudslide yesterday so at least train number one is on time and so is train number three from what i can tell. 5:39. the campaigning is starting very early.

wall street journal" this morning. the doj considered adding fbi agents to help in the search of president biden's homes after the team reported it found classified documents and turned them over. the report, which nbc has not confirmed, said the decision was made not to add agents because the doj felt it was getting the truth, rather answering the question speaker mccarthy is about to ask. >> were the same amount of agents investigating this as president trump? is the same push behind it? it just does not seem fair. this is why the american people get so upset and distrust their government when they see that the law is not applied equally. >> "the journal" reports, quote, the two sides, the doj and biden team, agreed mr. biden's personal attorneys would inspect the homes, notify the justice department as soon as they identified any potential

faster than individuals in a good mood. two groups there, clips from the movie "sophie's choice" and the tv show "friends" and participants read short stories that contained critical language errors. brain waves were measured to see how they reacted to the inconsistencies. those in a negative mood showed more brain activity. if you're in a bad mood you may do things more detailed oriented such as proof reading. >> it kind of makes sense. if you're in a bad mood, maybe you're looking for the negative. change your attitude and look for the good. >> mood rings to determine what type of work we should do. >> i think we work so closely, we know when one is in a good mood or bad mood, which is fair. >> what is my mood saying right now? >> saying you're suave. >> oh, my. is that a mood? >> i guess.

it's definitely a vibe. we are stepping out the door, hopefully you're in a good mood but are still able to pay attention to detail today looking at the detail in this shot. it's going to be very cold this morning as you get ready to head out. watching the coastal areas still because there's a coastal flood advisory in effect. all of the low-lying areas finding that water draining down, all the rain we've had recently and so due to run-off we have potential flooding in the days ahead but this time due to king tides. we have the sun and the moon aligned in a way where it's giving a greater gravitational pull to the water out in the ocean and that will bring it further inland with all of that gravity pl we'll have high tides and extremely low tides. we've been watching our reservoir levels.

this because of all the rain that we've had. a lot of them running at 100% of capacity and in some spots still with not much room to allow more water to come in but we are watching one more system coming in fairly quickly. in the meantime it will be chilly out there. our temperatures today reach into the mid to upper 50s this afternoon. we may have some issues with bridges and overpasses with the moisture left over and temperatures falling. the next system will be a cold front and it's just going to continue to give us chilly air into the weekend, keep it very cold for those among hours. look at the rain that will come in. in the north bay, ukiah, clear lake at 6:00 and then moving into santa rosa.

now for san francisco it's more like 9:00 to 10:00 moving down the peninsula and see how quickly it clears. we're waking up and see the ground is wet. we were probably sleeping and rainfall totals at a tenth to a quarter inch for much of the bay area, after that we'll see dry weather but once again very chilly and even with some cold fronts passing we're not going to see any more rain threw at least the end of next week. a lot of sunshine in the forecast but not much of a warm-up. our mornings may even start out near freezing for a lot of spots especially heading into the weekend where we could start out in the low 30s. be prepared for that with a lot of layers. mike, you are seeing something happening on 24. there was an earlier smoking vehicle, separate report of a crash, an accident or some sort of detail on the shoulder. everything is on the right

it's 5:56. dozens of dogs are safe all thanks to help from martinez firefighters. fire crews jumped into action rescuing all of those dogs. one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but no others were hurt. the homeowner says she was temporarily housing them for a friend who is a breeder. most of the pups are now back with the breeder. the corvette turns 70 and they are looking to the future introducing a new hybrid car. it is hybrid, an all-electric is expected in the future. general motors plans to offer only electric vehicles by 2035. the e-ray will be available late
