tragedy in california. a family shot and killed, and among the dead, a teen mother holding her baby, and what the police are revealing about a possible motive. and teens and cannabis. more teens are saying yes to the drug, and how parents can start an honest conversation with their kids. this hour, we are tracking that serious double weather threat targeting a huge swath of the country. >> one of the destructive storm systems that just hit california is heading east, and bringing with it snow and the possibility of tornadoes. right now, 18 million people are under winter weather alerts. the plains and the upper midwest are expecting several inches of snow. >> in the south, another 6 million under the threat of extremely damaging winds and hail. let's bring in nbc meteorologist angie lassman, and what should people be looking out for in the next 24 to 48 hours? >> well, like you said, multiple things, and severe weather, so

depending where you are, you will need to keep an eye out for the impacts. this system which is moving across the western part of the u.s. and now slicing through the western portion, there is blowing snow, and causing reduced visibility, and making it tricky for the travel across the plains, and we have potential for it to continue through the evening hours tonight. for the parts that have been hard hit over the last couple of weeks. the system is going to continue to track through the east, and bringing the heavy threat, and the snow potential for the folks in the great lake, and the interior northeast as we get into the next couple of weeks, and the tornado watch that is extending from parts of texas and louisiana and arkansas, and this is going to go to 5:00 eastern time, and we have seen the reports of the strong damaging winds to cause some downed trees and downed wires, and this is the bull's eye area, and memphis and alexandria and

was predicted by the intelligence analysts at the homeland security department when they warned of violent climate in the country, and we have been seeing the uptick against members of congress with over 7,000 threats in 2022 and double what it was in 2017. >> ken delainian in washington. thank you. we have breaking news in ukraine, the country's interior minister is among those dead in the helicopter after it fell near a kindergarten killing a child. there is no word of what caused the crash. president zelenskyy mourning in his address this morning. president biden released a statement saying that jill and i send our deepest condolences to the families of those mourning in ukraine. and keir, we will get to

zelenskyy's address where you are, but first, what do we know about the helicopter crash. >> well, as you mentioned, 14 dead, and others hospitalized and the most senior member of the intee your ministry killed in that helicopter crash, and a real wartime blow, and secretary blinken as well as the president is releasing a statement of condolences to ukraine, and to president zelenskyy, because the u.s. officials would have known these officials and there is no sign other than an accident, and the ukrainian officials are saying that they are investigating a possible causes, and investigating the possibility that there is some kind of nefarious role here, but they don't know that, and they have no indication of that at this stage. >> and at davos, that is where president zelenskyy delivered

this address, and what did he say. >> he asked for a minute's silence, and this is for who he knew well, and the interior minister is who he knew well over many, many years, and once again, he called for the unity, and there have been signs of challenges, and will germany contribute tanks as well as the u.s. toward ukraine for that battle with russia as we go towards potentially 2023 as russia and ukraine try to get towards the coming months, and the call towards the past, and these are the crunch months toward ukraine. kate. >> and the panelists have lost loved ones today, and many more. and we are losing daily, because of the war.

>> reporter: and we should hear, kate, by the end of this week whether those tanks will be sent to ukraine, and whether there will be another push by the west to support ukrainian forces. >> keir simmons for us, thank you. and the white house is not giving many answers about the handling of classified documents while the president was out of office. he does not have many public events today, and he has not commented on the materials in six days. our washington correspondent yamiche alcindor is joining us. "the wall street journal" says that the department of justice was considering a role in the search for the classified documents but decided against it, because the biden administration was cooperating, and how is this playing out so far? >> it is not verified by nbc

news, and underlying so far, the biden team, and legal aides have decided against more aggressive action, and that is in line what the white house department has said, and they have sought to be as transparent as possible with the doj and this is understood scoring that the biden administration is not having the tense back and forth as they had with the aides with president donald trump that they had back and forth. and with that, the doj does reserve the right to take a tougher stance and the right to give a future search warrant if the negotiations get hostile. >> yamiche, thank you. and now, more layoffs are announced for another big tech chain. >> and now, we are joined by

julia boorstin with the big money minute. >> another big tech company announcing big job cuts. microsoft has notified some of the 10,000 employees it is laying off. that makes almost 5% of the workers. today, amazon is starting the previously announced elimination of 18,000 jobs. they have laid off 68,000 employees in the last year. and party city has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. competition from the online retailers have cut into their sales and they plan to continue to operate with their debt. and yesterday, the transfers are delayed on the zelle apps. some customers are saying that

derek chauvin is looking to get his convictions in the murder of george floyd thrown out. >> the attorney for the minneapolis police officer told the court that his client did not get a fair trial and he is seeking a new one. he had pinned george floyd to the ground and pressing his knee into his neck for more than nine minutes and sparked international outrage and protests. we are joined by shaq brewster, and now, what did his attorney focus on today, and what happens next here? >> well, the main ask, and you laid it out there is that they want a new trial for derek chauvin and they say that he could not get a fair trial because of the attention that george floyd's trial got, and you talked about it, the protests and the riots in some cities and the social justice movement that you saw not just here in the united states, but across the world, and what the attorney was arguing is that all of the attention impacted how jurors were able to receive this

case in that derek chauvin knew about the video, and that he was not able to get a fair trial. i want to take you into the courtroom and let you hear from the arguments of first derek chauvin's attorney, and then the state as they defended the proceedings that we witnessed. >> the primary issue on the appeal is whether a criminal defendant can get a fair trial consistent with the constitutional requirements in a courthouse that is surrounded by concrete block, barbed wire, two armored personnel carriers and a squad of national guard troops. >> chavin's many arguments in this court do not come close to justifying reversal, because there was no actual prenyl dis, and judge cahill managed this trial we, we normous care. >> and not just a new trial, but

a new trial outside of minneapolis and hennepin county, and they want it in another area outside of minneapolis. and you also heard them point to a juror, and a specific juror who after the trial of the image of this juror at a protest in washington, d.c., surfaced, and they are alleging that the juror would not being truthful in the questioning process, and on his questionnaire, and you heard the state push back on that, and even some of the judges on that panel seemed a little skeptical of that argument saying that it is up to chavin's attorney in the voir dire during that questioning process to ask those questions, and you simply did not do that. >> and shaq, the appeal today is about tossing out the state convictions, right? but he is still serving a federal service at the same time and what is the end game if he wins? could he get the time behind bars overall reduced? >> yeah, and that is the key thing, because it is not that he

is likely to see any time reduced in any significant fashion. when he came with that plea deal, and when the federal government, and derek chavin entered that plea to violating george floyd's civil rights and also plead guilty to another case, the agreement is that he would serve the same amount of time in the state case, and that going to exist and not appealable, and so even if he wins this conviction h he is going to be spending a lot of time behind bars. >> thank you, shaquille brewster. the parents a at school where a 6-year-old boy shot his teacher are voicing their frustrations. >> they voiced their frustrations and concerns at a school board meeting the first since the shooting. katy beck is going to take us inside of the emotional scene. >> reporter: parents and teacher s are furious. >> i don't want to have a family dinner to talk about where my kids are going to hide in their school. >> reporter: their anger is aimed at the newport officials.

>> i find that my kids are going to be returning home safely after i pray to god. >> reporter: and this is after a 6-year-old boy shot his teacher abigail zwerner. she is now in stable condition after being hail adhere row after going to safety after she had been hit. and her first graders have been haunted by memory. >> she is 6 and terrified because the person advocating for her got hurt. she got hurt. >> reporter: and the parents claim that the school leaders have not done enough to make school safe, and pointing to three shootings in the districts in the past 18 months. >> what will it take? i pray it is not a fourth shooting. >> reporter: many of the teachers are blaming the district culture, and many of them are pointing to a bad behavior and emboldening them to be disruptive and without consequences. >> ask any teacher in this school division while discipline

incidents decline, and i have a feeling that the response is going to be the same, and the infraction incidents are down, because incidents are not always reported. >> reporter: and the teachers are saying that in-school detentions are not reported because it can reflect poorly on the school and their accreditation measures. and now, they are considering installing metal detectors and clear backpacks and better security. >> are you worried about sending your grandson back to school? >> yes, of course, of course. i feel nervous about sending him. >> reporter: another disturbing detail, on the day of this shooting, the school had actually received a tip that the 6-year-old had a gun, and they say that someone had searched the backpack and recovered nothing, and so what is unclear is if the child was physically

train commuters are stranded after a train hit a landslide. skyranger was over the spot where it stopped on the tracks. the train was headed from the tri-valley to the south bay. more than 200 people on board and you can see a tractor nearby being used to clear up the tracks. ace had to get the halted train back to the pleasanton station. we spoke with some commuters who were pretty rattled. >> i was holding my bike. >> so you weren't holding on at that point. >> no, both knees went down. i'm fine. >> the conductor tried to hit the brakes and then, boom, we hit a large tree laying over the tracks. once we hit the tree, we came to a stop and rolled. we felt we were going to tip and the mudslide came and hit the side of the train and that was it, we were stopped. >> wow. neither imagined that the trains would be stopped two days in a row now by landslides.

yesterday the train was stuck for about three hours. it was cleared in time for the evening commute back to the tri-valley but then the same thing happened today. now service is cancelled for the rest of the day and it's not clear when the ace trains will resume. people in alameda county are concerned about trees falling and damaging homes in their neighborhood. a huge eucalyptus tree fell into a home severely injuring a father of four. >> reporter: castro valley is calling on alameda county officials to remove these eucalyptus trees they feel are an imminent threat to folks in this community. they are removing a 200-ton eucalyptus tree that fell on a home splitting it in half, severely injuring a father of four who was inside the home at the time of the incident. those concerns are expressed in a gofundme for the victim's family as well as a petition to remove eucalyptus trees in the area.

they say there's a dozen at risk of falling down. officials say those trees can weigh more than 300 tons and haven't been kept in safe conditions. i did just speak to the victim's wife who said he's recovering from injuries but he's expected to be in the hospital for an extended period of time. >> thank you, pete. after several days of sun, we are expecting more rain tonight. here's meteorologist kari hall with your forecast. >> we're getting ready for one more round of rain. it's starting to make its way closer to the bay area, but will start to hit the north bay at 7:00 to 8:00. by 10:00 to 11:00 it's approaching san francisco and then moving into the south bay around midnight to 1:00 in the morning. it's in and out of here quickly and will for the most part be clearing by thursday morning. we're only looking at a tenth to quarter inch of rain but it may

bottom of the hour now. here are the stories making headlines on "nbc news daily." tomorrow, prosecutors in new mexico will announce whether criminal charges will be filed in the connection of the deadly shooting movie. a cinematographer was killed in 2021 on the set, and actor alec baldwin was holding gun when it was fired. he has denied any wrong going. after escaping a county jail in farmington, missouri, the inmates gained access through the space in the prison wall

used for plumbing and air conditioning. they were seen in a toyota scion, and the police are urging the public to call 911, if you spot any of the five men. and two people in a remote alaskan village were killed by a polar bear. this happened in the small alaskan village of whales. the bear was shot and killed by a local resident in the attack. the woman and the boy were walking at the time of the attack. a man is arrested in the murder of his wife. he plead not guilty. in the hearing the prosecutors released new details including alarming google searches that he made in days following his wife's disappearance including ten ways to dispose of a dead body. kristen dahlgren joins us

outside of the massachusetts courtroom. what else did we learn today? >> well, kate, some jaw-dropping revelations from the prosecutors in court today. they talked about the physical evidence, and while they have not located the body of ana walshe, they do say that they found her blood, her dna mixed with brian's dna in a dumpster outside of his mother's home, and that along with things like a hacksaw, and the clothes that she was believed to be last wearing, a purse, a necklace of hers and even the covid-19 vaccination card, and then the searches that you mentioned. let's pull up a few of them. search after search, and things like, how long before a body starts to smell, how to stop a body from decompodecomposing, t to discard a body, can you be charged with murder without a body, and can you identify a body with broken teeth. those are some of the searches and dozens that prosecutors say that are searches on his young son's ipad in the days following

her disappearance, kate. >> kristen, have we heard from walshe or his attorney today? >> right. in court they made no objection, but his attorney did release a statement, and i will read in part. it says that it is easy to charge a crime, and even easier the say that a person committed that crime, but it is much more difficult to prove it which we will see if the prosecution can do. she goes on to say that i intend to win this case in court and not in the media which has already tried and convicted mr. walshe, and she said, that we will see what evidence will hold up in court. he is being held without bail, and will have a zoom appearance next month, kate. >> kristen dahlgren for us. thank you. officials in oklahoma have confirmed that the remains of a child have been found in a rural gray county as athena brownfield have been missing since january 10th. authorities have not confirmed

if the remains belong to the girl. the remains have been taken to the medical examiner's office to make that identification. the mother and husband are under arrest. law enforcement are looking for suspects after a mother and her 10-month-old baby were killed in a shooting early monday morning. the sheriff said that the incident is gang-relate and asking the public for any information to lead to the suspect's arrest. nbc news correspondent nialla charles is joining us from the california bureau. >> they say it is cartel related, and this is speaking to the gruesome nature. the victims span three generations. the mother and her baby were found dead in the street killed while trying to run and the

grandmother was killed while sleeping. the sheriff says it is gang-related because there has been some activity at the home, but not all of the victims are tie up in gang-related activity. >> let me make it clear, not all of the people in this home are gang related or drug dealers. >> reporter: the sheriff is not saying while the family was targeted. one of the victims called 911 while they were being targeted. right now, they are offering a $10,000 reward. >> the sheriff said that he had execute ad search warrantt that property last week. do we know much about that? >> well, one of the victims was arrested earlier in the home

this month, and was found in possession of weapons and a control substance, and released days later. they believe that two of the suspects are involved here, but at this point, they don't have a description. aaron. >> all right. niala charles in los angeles for us. thank you. a man accused of trying to kidnap a barista in auburn, washington, through the drive through window has been arrested. he tried to kidnap the barista with a zip tie. a person nearby said she saw the video online and put her on edge. >> she is exchanging money and giving him back money for his drink. >> we lost some of the sound, but the police have yet to name, or release the name of the man arrested, but they did say that numerous tips from the community help to lead them to that suspect. despite calls for the

resignation, embattled congressman george santos does not appear to be going anywhere, and now the embattled congressman from new york has been named to the small business committee, and the science, space and technology committee in the u.s. house. this is after he admitted to lying about major aspects of h iz life and career. ryan nobles is joining us now. and ryan, can you put this into context for us. and i used to cover the hill to assign congressman santos to these committees and it is a big deal of who gets on what committee, and what are the members saying? >> well, kate, to be clear, this is not what members of congress describe as the a-committee or the most high profile that take on the most important work, but every committee in washington is important, and they all play a major role in shaping american policy and business and the science space and technology committee is playing a vital role in the work here in washington. what they are showing here, and kevin mccarthy and the steering

a cancerous tumor and george santos at that time was running a charity and offered to set up a gofundme to get the dog treatment, and the gofundme raised $3,000, but after the campaign ended, santos never reconnected with the veteran and never got treatment, and the dog never got treatment and died. and the veteran that we spoke with a few minutes ago talked about how heartbreaking for him. it was a therapy dog, an considered him a member of the family, and he said that george santos let him down in a moment of need. >> ryan nobles with that on capitol hill, and you can see more of that reporting on "nbc nightly news" tonight. and now, twitter's daily revenue has dropped 40% since last year, and because of the site's top advertisers leaving since elon musk took over. but it is not just the

advertisers, but some of the prominent users are speak pg out about the technical glitches on the site. julia boorstin is joining us. nbc news interviewed six large twitter account holders and system of them numbers in the millions on the site, and what have they noticed on the site since musk took over? >> one is that in many of the user accounts that range in the hundreds of thousands to the millions saw the rapid deletion or decrease in user accounts, and were these people leaving twitter or the bots were deleted or the glitch, and then reports in increases of the hate speech, and negative commentary, and anti-trans and racist remarks posted on the platform, and various studies showing an increase in that type of thing. >> so the advertisers are leaving and then some are reporting more issues like that,

and what could that mean for the future of twitter? >> well, elon musk has debt due, and he has to pay 1.5 billion in interest fees for the amount of money that he bothered to take over twitter, and the question is advertising, and will they jump ship, because they don't feel like they have the brand safety, and that going to have a big impact of how twitter is going to operate, and maybe they could file for bankruptcy. >> julia boorstin, cnbc los angeles. thank you. today, the supreme court heard a lawsuit involving students with disabilities. >> it involves a deaf student in michiganment for more than a decade, the school district did not provide a qualified sign language interpreter, and the student was not able to graduate. can you break this down? >> well, it is complicated, but at the core of it is when you

sue under some federal statutes, including the ada or the individuals with disabilities act, you have to what is called exhaust your administrative remedies before you file a lawsuit, but in this case, the plaintiff complained and the school district settled, so they never had the administrative hearing or anything, and now the defendant is arguing that technically, you did not exhaust your administrative process, because you settled early, and you got the relief that you wanted, and this is the theory here, and it does not have to do with the actual disability, but it is more of the procedural issue. >> so they settled on getting this child an education -- >> an interpreter? >> an education, yes, and they settled his claims and now that he is suing for the money damages, the defendants say, no, no, when you settled early on, and you failed to go through the entire administrative process

communicative, and these are the types of things that we want to look for in our teens, and early intervention is crucial. >> if you are concerned as a parents that your kid might be dependent on cannabis, how do you talk about it? >> well, i think that it is great to get a professional's opinion of how to speak to your adolescent, and contact the school, and see if they have any counseling, because maybe it would be a good for them to have some peer support or maybe someone that they know to reach out to them initially and see if they, you know, are struggling with something. sometimes the parents are not the best at addressing those issue, and so sometimes getting a professional involved is a good idea. >> and also, i would assume talking with your kids and being open about this is the first step. >> absolutely.
