but first, maggie vespa is in snowy green bay, wisconsin, for us. hey, maggie. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda, savannah, good morning. as you can see, the snow is already starting to fall overnight, the wind picking up at times as well. that was a plow in the back ground. they're used to this. they're already out here on the roads. this system is widespread. severe warnings in colorado, iowa, nebraska and farther east, where the snow hasn't even begun to fall, states are on high alert after getting a preview of this storm's strength back out west. >> reporter: from blinding snow in the plains and midwest to a powerful tornado sweeping through the south, this morning winter weather is pummelling the nation. in colorado, a stunning 21-vehicle pileup after a semi truck jackknifed on an icy i-70 near aurora. among the wreckage, two people hurt. their injuries minor. stranded drivers forced to hunker down. >> we're all in limbo. these trucks out here, they have nowhere to go. >> we're going to camp out in denver.

we can't go forward. we're not going to move forward. >> reporter: at denver airport, a rush to de-ice planes with more than half of all flights delayed wednesday. farther west, an avalanche knocking out power to a town, that snow and debris 20 feet deep. cars slipping and sliding and snowplows in the storm's path struggling to keep up with the lines of cars stuck on roads as two feet of snow fell in nebraska paralyzing highways. from the central plains to new england, 31 million americans are waking up under winter weather alerts this morning with 5 million at risk for severe storms in ohio. that risk coming to fruition in an already tornado-battered south. the national weather service confirming an ef-1 twister touched down in waldo, arkansas, wednesday, packing 100 mile-an-hour winds. this morning, states farther east on high alert, fearing the stunning scenes out west are a preview of what's headed their

way. and speaking of out west, some might wonder if it is worth talking about snow in colorado, especially during january. the climate unit telling us that denver storms clocked out at 9.2 inches of snow. that is the biggest january storm in more than 30 years. since 1992. that's where the country gets more snow in march and april. another time of the storm. hoda, savannah? >> maggie, thank you. let's bring in al who has his eye on the storm, head of the climate unit here at nbc. >> thanks, guys. we are look at winter storm advisories, winter storm alerts and even some winter storm watches for 31 million people especially around the great lakes into the northeast as well. you can see this storm system now pushing in, bringing rain to the south, but snow around the great lakes. as the system moves east, rain, snow, and sleet develop into the northeast, and staying away from the i-95 corridor, but north and

west of that, damaging winds, possible tornadoes down through ohio, where we have a risk for that kind of activity. tomorrow the upper low will swing eastward and take out the colder air, but the accumulating snow, good news, it starts to die down as you get into new england. for friday, one to three inches in minneapolis. marquette, 8-12. alpena, 4-8 inches of snow. in the northeast, burlington, vermont, maybe four to eight. portland, six to eight. albany, one 20 two inches. higher rainfall amounts along the coast. guys? >> al, thank you so much. we'll check back with you. calls are growing louder for freshman congressman george santos to resign after the republican from new york admitted he embellished parts of his resume, and this morning, there are more potential lies about his past emerging. garrett haake has the latest. garrett, good morning. >> hoda, good morning to you. it seems like every day, we're learning something else about george santos's life that simply

isn't true. now he is being accused of stealing funds from a homeless veteran's dying dog and lying about his mother being a 9/11 survivor. the lies reaching such a boiling point that one fellow new york lawmaker has called for his passport to be revoked deeming santos a flight risk this. >> reporter: this morning, embattled new york congressman george santos caught in another lie. the freshman republican claiming on his campaign website that his mother survived the tragic events of september 11th from her office in the world trade center's south tower. even making her 9/11 story part of his campaign stump speech. >> i am a, you know, son of immigrants, the grandchild of holocaust survivors, and the son of a 9/11 survivor. >> reporter: immigration records provided to nbc news by a genealogical researcher shows that santos' mother, left the united states for brazil in 1999 and did not return until 2003. placing her more than 4,000 miles from ground zero on the day of the attack.

that revelation coming on the same day a disabled navy veteran accused santos of walking away with $3,000 in gofundme cash, raised to pay for life-saving surgery for his service dog sapphire. >> he was almost too nice. i knew there was something up with him. >> reporter: richard said he was connected with santos' charity friends of pets united in 2017 to help raise money for an operation he could not afford. when it came time for the surgery, he says, santos refused to hand over the money and he was forced to put sapphire down. >> i was so livid that this man is now a serving congressman. he doesn't deserve that job. it's horrendous that he could lie and steal and cheat his way through life. >> reporter: santos has not responded to questions from nbc news about either allegation. but he did tell the website

senafor, that the story was "fake." >> there are two allegations and many against santos, are any of these things moving needle as to where he stands in washington right now? >> let's go through it. caught lying about his religion and admitted lying about his job experience and about attending college. he told multiple different stories about how and when his mother died. and he is under investigation by at least five different entities that we know of, including investigations into how he funded his campaign. and that might be the biggest political danger to him. an indictment in the u.s. would likely force republicans to remove santos from his committee assignments at the very least. assignments he only received this week. hoda? >> garrett haake for us there in washington, thank you. now we head to the high stakes showdown over the debt ceiling of the government on the brink again of hitting its borrowing limit. it's prompting the treasury department to begin using, quote, extraordinary measures to continue paying the nation's bills. in the meantime, the republicans are demanding spending cuts before any deal can be reached. and of course, this all impacts you and your wallet.

here to walk us through it is brian chung, nbc's business reporter. brian, good morning. stop me if you've seen this movie before. let's go back to basics though. the debt ceiling, this is not about new spending. we're not writing a blank check here, to do a bunch of new spending. this is about spending that both parties have already done, and now it's time to pay the bills. >> yes, so important to make the distinction there, savannah, and good morning as well, hoda when we talk about the debt limit, what we are talking about is spending already done imagine you have spent a $1,000 on the credit card and authorized to use $800 to pay off that bill, how do you plug the gap? that's what the debt limit is all about. and the estimate is that today, we hit the limit for how much we can use. >> it is like your credit limit. >> like your credit limit. >> and you need to increase it. >> and the limit it is reached today and there are extraordinary measures to hobble the next few months and the estimates to get us through june. >> that is kind of like, they're just doing, moving money around to basically i'll pay this bill but not that bill.

>> one hand to the other >> for a few more months but what happens the chickens come home to roost in june, right and that's when it is do or die time, you either raise the debt ceiling or what? catastrophe? lay it out for us. >> that's the words that we've heard from those inside the treasury it would be a full-out catastrophe. but really what we're talking about here is just the consequences of potentially a lot of these social programs going bust because if the government cannot pay its bills on its government debt which is the u.s. treasury they will have to start making cuts in social security and not be able to make medicare payments and veterans payments and food stamp payments and catastrophic and also for the financial markets, as well the u.s. government is widely regarded as the best and safest thing to have your in your wallet type of thing, but if that all evaporates that leads to catastrophe but it is important to know that it hasn't happened since 1960, 78 times the government has moved to raise the debt ceiling. congress, we hope, will do the same. >> and everybody shrugs it off a little bit they always get it

is there any cost to the economy and the american consumer when you just have the threat of the debt limit not being raised? looming over us for a few months >> certainly, i mean, the stock market looks very close, in washington, d.c., to see whether or not this is going to get done or not it is mostly the case that it gets done. but 401(k)s are very much hinging on what is going to happen over the next few months. and people said, this is a little bit of a crazy dance that happens over and over and over again and proposals to make a permanent solution, like an automatic system that would just raise the debt limit and maybe you take the debate over spending to the spending bill as opposed to the debt limit and minting a $1 trillion coin, we won't get into the nuances of that these are different types of suggestions that maybe the debt limit exercise is something that is a bit separate from the spending bills, which maybe that's where the conversation should go. >> fight over what you should spend or wherever you can afford to cut taxes, that's not this argument >> the credit card >> brian, thank you so much.

technical malfunction, or a deliberate act president zelenskyy told world leaders at the world economic forum in davos that whatever the cause, because of the war, russia ultimately bears responsibility. the search is on this morning for five inmates who escaped from jail in farmington, missouri, on tuesday officials say the inmates got through the jail's rooftop by crawling through the vents and the pipes. later there was surveillance video that showed the men running in a gated area. then they stole a car from the jail's parking lot and drove off. all of the inmates were being held on felony warrants. authorities say anybody who spots any of these five fugitives should not approach them but instead should call 911. some bank of america customers woke up yesterday to find out there was money missing from their accounts. people flooded social media with complaints it turns out those who were impacted were customers who recently used the payment transfer service zelle bank of america issued a statement later in the day apologizing for the inconvenience and the bank says as of late afternoon, all of the

issues have been resolved. let's turn now to the latest developments in the idaho college murders. >> with a suspect being held without bail there are new court documents and they're revealing more about a still unfolding investigation. nbc's erin mclaughlin has more good morning. >> good morning, guys, we're learning new details about the case authorities are building against bryan kohberger. court documents outline the list of potential evidence recovered from the 28-year-old's apartment, searched more than six weeks after the murders. >> reporter: newly released court documents reveal the items seized from suspect bryan kohberger's washington state apartment. as authorities continue to search for a possible motive in murder weapon in the killing of university of idaho students, xana kernodle, ethan chapin, kaylee goncalves, and madison mogen, in the early morning hours of november 13th according to the document, the day of his arrest at his

family's home in pennsylvania, authorities were thousands of miles away, scouring the criminology student's apartment, combing for digital clues and dna evidence that search yielding a laundry list of items. including the chemical resistant black gloves, multiple hair strands including possible animal hair, cuttings from a pillow of a reddish brown stain and a dark red spot. they also seized electronics the potential evidence as kohberger's legal team is shaping his defense, after they asked to push his next preliminary hearing to june. kohberger has yet to enter a formal plea but tells his lawyer he believes he will be exonerated >> the defense is likely to start attacking all of those individual strands of evidence >> reporter: in the newly unsealed documents, prosecutors arguing it is probably that bryan kohberger went home after the murders knowing that the murder scene contained a

significant amount of blood from the victims, adding it is likely that he still had blood or other trace evidence on his person also noting that kaylee goncalves owned a dog which may explain why they were looking for animal hair in his apartment. according to the documents, authorities also applied to search his office at washington state university, he was a teaching assistant and pursuing his ph.d. in criminology. no items were listed as recovered from that scene. families are waiting months more for the next day in court. >> what we can focus on is this individual and finding every piece of evidence. it all has to come out it all has to be clear. >> these latest court documents potentially add to evidence investigators have already laid out, and in a previous charging document, they said they recovered dna at the scene that they had matched to kohberger, and video surveillance allegedly showing his hyundai elantra in the area that night. savannah >> erin, thank you you. joining us is senior legal correspondent laura jarrett. >> what is jumping out to you?

new evidence that they found in the case what you are keeping your eye on here >> a couple of things. number one is the digital tower. we all leave a digital footprint in this day and age. investigators want to comb through that, i'm sure they have by now, and they want to figure out what if any planning took place here because remember, for lawyers, prosecutors, the key is can they show intent and key for first-degree murder one of the charges he is facing the computer tower would be a particular area of interest. the other thing is this piece of possible animal hair why is that interesting? because we know one of the victims shared a dog with the boyfriend, we know that the dog was at the scene of the crime. if they can connect the animal hair to his home, where they executed the search warrant, that could be key. and the last and final one is the possible bloodstain that they found on the mattress covers, on the pillow cases. they want to know what if anything again is there, and we do not know the results of any of this, i should say, we know that they found it, but we do not know that this is actually

connected. >> it is interesting, too, because the search takes play december 30th, six weeks after the murders. i think around the same day that his arrest was conducted this is a criminology student, presumably he knows something about cleaning up after his tracks if he really is the suspect here >> and that is what you're going to hear prosecutors try to harp on that, and the thing is they're going to try to say, don't worry about the fact that we haven't found the murder weapon, right? that's the other missing thing here is they have the knife sheath which they believe was used, they have a piece of dna on it, but they don't actually have the knife the knife is obviously the thing that could link him if they could find it but it could be anywhere between washington and pennsylvania for all we know. >> is there any connection between him and the victims that police have been able to find? >> that's one of the huge things, one of the unanswered questions, one that is pressing for reporters to be reporting on and why the computer tower could be key because we need to understand, were they targeted, had he tried outreach and made some sort of overtures to them beforehand, and that is one of

breaking news. just moments ago the new mexico district attorney released a statement announcing it will file involuntary manslaughter charges against actor alec baldwin over the 2021 fatal film set shooting of cinematographer halyna hutchins. baldwin was holding the prop gun on the new mexico set of the western titled "rust" when the gun went off killing hutchins. miguel almaguer is covering the story from new mexico. what more can you tell us, miguel? >> reporter: lester, this decision a long time in the making. the sheriff's office reviewing and investigating the case over a year. and the d.a. office looking at that investigation over three months before officially making their decision today. as you know, alec baldwin will face involuntary manslaughter charges, and hannah gutierrez reid the prop worker in charge.

in a criminally negligent manner. a bit of a misnomer, it means recklessness, conscious disregard of a known risk and other use of a firearm in a nearly negligent manner meaning fell below applicable standards. believe me, a ballots of the experts. stunt experts, armor experts. movie set experts. you're going to have all kinds of firearm experts as well. so that may be the option that the state uses because that negligence, mere negligence standard is so light. but as much as i believe that baldwin would be charged, i think it's a misstep for the state to charge him, because all of these statutes deal with a weapon that someone knows to be a weapon. as far as baldwin knew he was handling a block of wood or a piece of plastic. he was assured by other people, this is not a conventional gun. this may be one of the few cases in history of firearms cases where you could reasonably say

somebody looking at something that looked exactly like a gun could reasonably it wasn't a gun. so i think it's very difficult to the state to get to beyond a reasonable doubt and i anticipate this may result in an acquittal for baldwin. >> danny, ask you to stand by while i turn to nbc news senior legal correspondent laura jarrett. intent, does that come into play? >> reporter: yeah. a big question, danny pointed out. this will come to a battle of the experts, and, remember, all along baldwin has said i didn't even pull the trigger. his defense here hasn't been that he, he didn't know what was going on. his defense, this is not on me. he said he pulled back the hammer but didn't actually pull the trigger. now, prosecutors will push back on that obviously at work over a year since the crime took place and relied on a very thorough investigation from the local sheriff down there. obviously spent a lot of time investigaing all the facts they'll put together to figure

together and a lot of the food you eat is very symbolic for like health, prosperity, longevity, and good luck and money. >> i love the money part. what's up first? >> we're having longevity noodles first. >> okay. >> typically, a lot of times you eat noodles, the longer the noodles you eat, the longer and happier your life will be. why not make your own long noodles? >> you need longer the noodle, the longer your life that's the idea? >> exactly very symbolic. and we will be pulling the noodles ourselves. so the dough is a combination of bread flour, and the protein, your dough can be stretchy and really long. and we add the salt and warm water. that's the basic that's the basic for most dough. stir it together make it nice and shaggy. once it comes together, we will start kneading it by hand. it is really important to give the dough a really good knead. and we will knead the dough twice. imagine 10 minutes, it becomes a nice smooth dough and cover it and let it rest for about 15 minutes or so, and then we will roll it out into a small log right here so you just take this off the

counter, and you can feel it, you can feel how stretchy it is but see if it is long as possible, so the technique, that is common for different types of noodles, you actually twist it. >> you can add a little flour so it is not so sticky. >> and you can add a little flour. but twisting like this aligns the gluten in one direction. it is really strong when you pull it. so you can try it, too >> how do you get to this point? >> after you do this - >> how long will you stretch >> very long. you can pull that for you and see how far it goes. >> i will stretch. >> it is quite stretchy already. but we will do it even more. >> keep cooking. >> craig will grab one end and i'll do it. >> that's fine >> after your knead your dough four times >> oh, wow. >> long life >> there we go >> hang on.
