7:00 am
good morning. it is sunday, january 2nd. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper. we begin with breaking news this morning near los angeles, where a mass shooting leaves ten people dead and ten others injured. it happened following a lunar new year celebration at a ballroom dance club in monterey park just east of downtown l.a. when police arrived just after 10:30 last night, they say people were pouring out of the location, screaming. so far, we know that at least ten people have died and ten others were transported for their injuries. the victims' conditions range
7:01 am
from stable to critical. the shooter remains on the loose. police say the shooter is a man and they are reviewing footage from cameras near the scene. monterey park is a city of about 60,000 people and has a large asian population. yesterday was the start of the two-day festival for the lunar new year. police say out of respect, today's events are canceled. president biden has been briefed on the shooting and has directed his homeland security adviser to make sure the fbi provides full support to local authorities in monterey park. we are expecting a press conference around 8:00 this morning for updates from the scene. we're going to turn back here locally for a check of our microclimate forecast. for that, we bring in cynthia pimentel. hi, cynthia, good morning. >> good morning, everyone. thank you for waking up with us on this sunday. live look from our sutro camera. i wanted to show you some fog creeping over the marin headlands there. that's keeping us a little bit warmer than what we saw yesterday, saturday morning. right now out there in the city, 45 degrees.
7:02 am
but look at the north bay, still running very chilly this morning, 37 at napa, and the valleys, of course, in the east bay, 35 there in concord. 36 in dublin. and right here in san jose, we are at 40 degrees. a little bit warmer, anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees warmer. a little bit warmer at coast as well, and that's because of that offshore wind and carl, the fog playing a little bit of a role. so we do have this wind advisory all of the orange that you see here is that wind advisory that goes into place later today, staying with us through monday morning. very gusty winds. i'll track that all for you and much more coming up in just a little bit. >> cynthia, thanks. new this morning, 25 residents in san francisco are now displaced after a fire tore through their apartment building. it happened around 1:30 this morning on hays and vizadero streets. fire crews say the flames spread to two buildings. one firefighter was taken to the hospital for injuries, but is expected to be okay. and now to a developing

story in the north bay, where a woman died after crashing her tesla into a backyard and into the pool. investigators say she was not wearing a seat belt, but now they're trying to figure out what caused her to swerve off the road. "today in the bay's" alyssa goard reports from san rafael. >> reporter: we don't know how fast that car was going, but chp tells us the tesla feared off of the road, into that fence, creating that hole and careened across the backyard, landing in the pool. a staggering site in san rafael, a crane lifting a 2019 tesla out of a backyard pool. pool water rushing out of the vehicle. >> and i heard a loud, like, boom. and i jumped you have out of bed. >> reporter: barbara cuffner lives here. saturday morning, she said she heard what she thought was thunder and lightning and saw lights in her pool. but it wasn't thunder or lightning. it was a tesla. the chp says a woman in her 70s
7:04 am
was behind the wheel when for unknown reasons, she veered to the right, crossing bayview road, crashing through the fence, plowing through the backyard, and into barbara's pool. >> i just called 911. >> reporter: barbara said a friend was there at the time and tried to help. >> and he was trying to break the car to get the person out, but he couldn't. >> reporter: paramedics arrived shortly after, but the woman died. no one else was hurt. chp is waiting for a report from the coroner's office and data from the car. at this point, investigators don't think alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash and they're not sure if the tesla was in auto pilot. >> at this time, it's still under investigation. we're not sure if any of that had played a role in this crash, but everything will be looked at. we'll be able to download the information from the vehicle. >> reporter: in the meantime, barbara is left with debris and damage all around our pool, while she picks up the pieces, she's feeling grateful that she, her friend, and her friend's dog were not in the backyard when the crash happened.
7:05 am
>> all three of us could have been out there at that time. and we might not be alive right now, you know? so, that's, you know, we're grateful for that. >> reporter: alyssa goard, today in the bay. oakland's assistant police chief is at the department's helm this morning, as chief la ron armstrong remains on administrative leave. mayor shane tou yesterday spoke out about her decision to sideline the chief. it stems from a report accusing chief armstrong of failing to scrutinize investigations involving a sergeant facing multiple misconduct allegations. speaking yesterday at city hall, mayor tao said her administration takes the report's findings seriously. she did make it clear the chief's paid leave is not a discipline air action, it's a standard process for anyone under investigation within the department. >> our goal here is not to be punitive. this is not a disciplinary action to chief la ron
7:06 am
armstrong. this is an opportunity to more fully review the findings of the report and let our oversight body act and do the job that they're in place to do. >> this all comes as opd is trying to exit the federal oversight it's been under for more than 20 years. that stems from a civil rights lawsuit. mayor thao stressed her administration is committed to ending that oversight. former oakland city council member and candidate for mayor lauren taylor says that he would not have put the chief on leave. in a statement released yesterday, he said, quote, while the buck ultimately stops with the chief of department for everything that occurs within their organization, the magnitude of the discipline levied in this instance does not match the nature of the infraction documented by the report. today marks what would have been the 50th anniversary of the supreme court's landmark abortion rights ruling, roe v. wade. to mark the day, president biden will issue a presidential
7:07 am
memorandum on further efforts to protect access to reproductive health care services. today's memorandum announces actions to protect legal access to medication abortion and to safeguard patient safety and security. the president says that people should have access to reproductive carefree from harassment, threats, or violence, and pharmacies should be treated no differently. yesterday, people on both sides of the abortion debate filled the streets of san francisco, some blasting the current court's decision to overturn roe v. wade. others praising the decision and saying that it didn't go far enough. >> they tell us that we're going backward in time, that we're antiquated. what's antiquated is child sacrifice. >> i don't think they should be telling women what to do with their bodies. we do not want to be enslaved by our uteruses. and i think that they're living high today, but a reckoning is coming. we're going to get it back.
7:08 am
>> reporter: the rallies yesterday remained mostly peaceful. more demonstrations are planned for today. and rallies in the bay area will be put on mostly by the women's march organization. there will be events at the san jose, alameda, and sonoma city halls all at noon. and in napa at the county superior courthouse at 2:00 p.m. we're going to shift gears now and talk about one of the biggest games in the nfl taking place today at levi stadium. and the 49er faithful are ready. we have a live look at levi's this morning, where the niners will battle the dallas cowboys in their nfc divisional playoff game at 3:30. but if you can't get tickets to the game and want to enjoy it with other fans, the team is hosting two free watch parties. one will take place in san francisco at the crossing at east cut on folsom street, that's at 2:30. the other in san jose at san pedro social. both events start at 2:30 and
7:09 am
team representatives expect both events to be packed with fans. >> allows us to really extend the 49ers community and a lot of folks to have a stadium-like atmosphere to watch the game without having to actually be here at levi's. >> remember the niners played this season in mexico city. there's a huge fan base there, too, so the team will be hosting a watch party there today if you know anyone who happens to be in the neighborhood. at 7:09 right now, we have much more ahead on "today in the bay". coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with chuck todd. stay with us.

league soccer afterwards, but i wanted to talk to you about this past week, when president biden was here in california touring storm damage. we finally saw him respond to a question about the classified records. he essentially said he's fully cooperating, there's no "there" there. but then yesterday, we found out six additional items were found in his delaware home after a search prompted by the white house, which appears to show cooperation, even willingness, i'm curious how you think this would or could impact his future in running for re-election or how it could reflect on his party. >> look, i think it's a lack of transparency or the perceived lack of transparency. the white house is going to argue, hey, what they've done with this is much different than donald trump, but the problem is, i don't think many people think that donald trump should be a standard, right? it's sort of a given. that's why the country picked biden over trump. they thought that biden would hold a higher standard on these things. and i think that leaning on just
7:13 am
saying that you're better than trump is not saying you're being transparent. is not saying you're doing everything on the up and up. and i think that that's the miscalculation here, and what i noticed is, you have a lot of lawyers around the president giving him advice and apparently, they kept this a close hold. they didn't even let a lot of the west wing staff know for some time. and i think they're paying the price. i mean, you said you've already seen the program. senator manchin, he really responded. the president said in that comment out in california, he said, he had no regrets. joe manchin said, he should have a lot of regrets about how he's handled this. and i know other democratic senators are not ready to defend him publicly. they're certainly ready to say, yes, what biden did is much different than what trump did. but again, the comparison is not a great look. that's the biggest takeaway i have from this. in an odd way, biden's problems here, which are on the surface minuscule, have actually made
7:14 am
trump more relevant. and has probably made it a lot harder for this justice department to prosecute donald trump, and that has all sorts of fallout to it. >> wow. a lot of layers there. it will be interesting to follow. also this past week, we saw orange county congresswoman katie porter kick off her senate campaign here in southern california. even though senator dianne feinstein has not announced whether she will seek re-election, there are others eyeing her seat. so is there an advantage to porter announcing her plan so soon or prematurely? >> well, no, i think if i were in her shoes, i understand what she's trying to do. look, we don't know -- you were right to point out that senator feinstein hasn't said what she plans to do. nobody expects her to run for re-election. the real speculation out there is can she finish her term? she was unable to join the president in that flight. senator padilla was with the president. she was not able to be with the president. she's not been out there in california dealing with these
7:15 am
storms. her office says that she's been briefed and things. so, you know, there's a lot of speculation that she could end up resigning early and governor newsom has all but said, he's going to probably would end up appointing barbara lee. doesn't say barbara lee by name, but the most prominent african-american woman in california and democratic politics these days arguably is barbara lee. and it would be his appointment. she's also running. so if you're in katie porter's shoes, and you may be running against a sitting senator eventually, i'm not talking about barbara feinstein, you have no choice but to get out early. i expect there to be -- kira, i expect there to be almost as many candidates for this senate seat as we saw for the california recalled gubernatorial race, when everybody from arnold schwarzenegger to arnold jackson ran. i think there's going to be a ton of candidates jumping into this race before we're all said and done. >> we make national news once again. all right, chuck todd, thank you so much for talking to us this morning. as mentioned, "meet the press"
7:16 am
aired before our newscast at 6:00 a.m. today, because we'll be airing premiere league soccer, but if you missed it, don't worry, you can stream the show online on your amazon fire, roku, appletv or on peacock. we are learning that three men tried to gain access to the palo alto property where disgraced crypto founder, sam bankman-fried is under house arrest. in a court filing this week, his attorney says that a car crashed into the barricade outside the home. the men allegedly got out and threatened security guards. but then they drove away. it's unclear when this actually happened. sbf, as he's known, is pleading not guilty to charges that he cheated investors out of $8 billion on his crypto platform ftx. the recent filing stems from a notion by several news outlets to release the names of two individuals who contributed to his $250 million bond. two-way traffic control is in place on part of highway 92
7:17 am
in half moon bay this morning. cal transcrews are still working to repair that massive sinkhole that opened up earlier this month and erosion on the hillsides. so the westbound lanes are still shut down. the two-way traffic control runs from skyline boulevard to sea creek road. give yourself some extra time if you're traveling through the area. there is just one lane going each way. and today is the lunar new year. the festivities kicked off last night in san francisco. this is video from our transamerica pyramid camera last night. you can see fireworks going off. wow, it looks beautiful there. this by the way, marks the year of the rabbit or the cat. and if you and your family are going out today, our mike' knowway has a look at some events you can attend. >> good morning, kira. let's start with a stroll, or at least a royal walk with the king tide along the embarcadero in
7:18 am
san francisco. folks from the exploratorium and from the port of san francisco will meet up with us between piers three and five to observe, discuss, and photograph the king tides. those are the exceptionally high tides that we've been talking about on the news. today's high tide is predicted to be over 7 feet high at 11:21 a.m. the event is from 10:00 to noon. biel continue talking about the pull of the moon down in the south bay. i often talk about my history with san jose japantown. but today we'll talk about the history of san jose japantown, which used to be one of chinatown. they're bringing their history and their presence together for a harmonious lunar new year celebration on jackson near sixth, the center of japantown. for more on the lunar new year, we'll celebrate the more multi-cultural celebration in san ramon. that's where it's at bishop ranch -- the start of the 15 days celebration featuring chinese, korean, vietnamese dancers, a kung fu demonstration, and of course, lion dances. today's activities are from 2:00
7:19 am
to 4:00 at center city bishop ranch. remember to wear some red for luck, and avoid the red by joining me for your morning commute weekdays on "today in the bay". >> thanks, mike, so much. let's check in you with cynthia pimentel for your microclimate forecast. >> it's so gorgeous, the sunrise, everything going on. all the festivals from the coast to the valleys. we've got a lot going on. and even though it's a little bit calm, we've still got a lot to talk about. i want to get you prepared for your day around the bay. let's start in livermore. 35 degrees there right now. and we'll climb into the 50s with a little bit of a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. the valleys still running very, very cold. and let's not forget san francisco, where as mike was saying, we do have those king tides. currently 48 degrees and right there behind, we started with that live shot this morning of karl just cruising his way into san francisco this morning. we'll climb with plenty of sunshine into the upper 50s. so king tides, not only a san francisco issue, it's in the
7:20 am
north bay areas like san rafael, as you make your way on into the vallejo, the east bay shoreline, too, and of course out at the coast. you can see right there, when the highest of tides will be for today and on into tomorrow. and aside from all of this. we also, you know, had a lot of severe storms in the bay area, so you might see some debris start to wash up on the shore and lingering about. just be careful of that. now, high temperatures stay, if you are headed to the coast or running around town, doing any errands, we'll be in the upper 50s in the north bay, 57 out at the coast in half moon bay and down in santa cruz. and a lot of mid-to-upper 50s in the inland valleys as well. but livermore, just running a little bit cooler than the rest of us. now, as we move it on into tomorrow, these temperatures are going to bump up a little bit. and i'll tell you why. we have some offshore winds bringing up these temperatures just a little bit. so 64 in santa rosa is our forecasted high for tomorrow. 59 in hayward and in san jose. so just be careful of that, too. you might be woken up by some
7:21 am
gusty winds as we go through the day tomorrow. and they start to pick up this morning. look, 12:00, while we're having lunch, running around time, we're ranging anywhere from 50 to 20 miles an hour in the north bay. and then they really start to pick up, howling around 1:30 tomorrow morning one in the north bay. look it, 31 miles an hour, coming from the north, and then down in mt. diablo, too. be careful of that. secure any loose objects that you want to keep tonight on into tomorrow, preparing for that. now, you might be wondering, where's the rain? and along with the winds, i would be very concerned if we were looking at this and hadn't had any rain. for the time being, it's a little bit disappeared, but it might come back in the next couple of days, as we start early january and into february. forecast looks great for 49ers. san francisco seven-day forecast also very great. inland valleys, a little bit chilly, but let's switch it up a little bit and talk about our climate in crisis. nasa and noaa just released
7:22 am
their global temperature analysis and found that the earth's average surface temperature in 2022 tied with 2015 as the fifth warmest on record. continuing the planet's long-term warming trend, global temperatures in 2022 were 1.6 degrees fahrenheit above the average. the past nine years have been the warmest years since modern record-keeping began, way back in 1880. this means that the earth in 2022 was about 2 degrees fahrenheit warmer than the late 19th century average. 2 degrees may sound pretty small to us, but it's throwing our weather systems all around the world off balance. we talked to a nasa climate scientist about the findings. >> when the atmosphere is warmer, it can actually hold warm moisture. and that means when it rains, you can get more massive amounts of rainfall. so flooding is much more likely to happen in a warming climate, just simply because the atmosphere holds more moisture than the climate when it's a regular, normal climate.
7:23 am
>> yeah, a lot of data there. you can find the latest on all of our climate series on our website, nbcbayarea.com. >> cynthia, thanks so much. it's just about 7:23 right now. still to come on "today in the bay," coming up, win or lose. the 49ers will play their final home game of the season at levi stadium. we'll tell you what linebacker fred warner says is the key to victory against the cowboys. sports is next.
7:25 am
good morning, everyone. i'm anthony flores. it's game day. the 49ers and cowboys are reigniting one of the greatest rivalries. the red and gold are red hot. they won 11 in a row with rookie quarterback brock purdy going a perfect 6-0 as a starter. the niners beat the boys in dallas last year in the wild card. this time, the cowboys roll into
7:26 am
levi's fresh off a dominating performance over tom brady and the buccaneers. >> we've got to make sure we're executing at a high level. it doesn't matter who the better team, it's about who plays the best on sunday. >> biggest rivalry to me in football, and that goes away, and we had a big game last year, a big game this year. the more you do that, the bigger it gets again. >> there's a lot of history, a lot of super bowls between the two organizations. to be a part of it, i'm thankful. it's pretty cool. i look at it like, we want to win, we want to do our part and all the other stuff will fall into place. >> i studied boxers, and i know when you get ready to go into a fight, you need to prepare, if it's going to go 12 rounds, it's going to go 12 rounds. >> and whoever is left standing from that heavyweight fight will face the eagles, the philadelphia eagles just crushed the giants last night, up 21-0, just before halftime. jalen hurts scores on the keeper, the eagles roll 38-7. philly will host the nfc
7:27 am
championship game next sunday. >> and it almost bounced back in, comes back, still alive, and they score! nico sturm! >> reporter: the sharks take a one-goal lead less than two minutes into the third period, but then the blue jackets will outscore san jose 3-0 the rest of the way. the jackets skate by the sharks, final, 5-3. that's a look at your morning sports. i'm anthony flores for "today in the bay". >> thanks, anthony. it is 7:27 right now. still to come on "today in the bay," we are following breaking news out of southern california where at least ten people have been killed in a mass shooting at a lunar new year celebration. we'll have the latest, next.
7:29 am
7:30 am
on the dallas cowboys and we are all crossing our fingers for that matchup at 3:30 today. thank you so much for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cynthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast and with that sun rising, it already looks like it's going to be a beautiful day to watch some football. maybe bundle up. >> yeah. and with this beautiful weather, they have to win. it's the bear. we're all getting pumped for that. we are waking up to those 30s and 40s all around the bay area. a few degrees warmer than what we saw yesterday, saturday, but still bundle up and bring in those pets and plants indoors. i want to say good morning to you, if you're watching us from vallejo, we'll climb into the mid-to-upper 50s this afternoon with plenty of sunshine. but we have this to cover in our full forecast. look at that, the winds picking up, hazardous coastlines still an issue, and then by mid-week, we'll see a little bit of a warm-up still with those chilly mornings ahead.
7:31 am
i'm also going to take you up to tahoe, because there is a special kind of weather statement that i want to talk to you about, that could turn deadly if you're not prepared. kira, back to you. >> cynthia, thanks. we continue to follow breaking news this morning out of southern california, where ten people were killed and at least ten more were injured in a mass shooting in monterey park. a community just outside of downtown l.a. with a large asian population. the shooting happened last night as thousands of people gathered for a lunar new year festival. the shooter remains on the loose. nbc's steve paterson brings us the latest. >> still very early in this investigation, but we are now getting information from police again. the number that we have at this moment, and could change at any point is ten dead right now and then ten wounded on top of that, additionally. those conditions range anywhere from stable to critical condition, as those people were transported from the scene to area hospitals. the horrific shooting taking place shortly after about 10:20
7:32 am
saturday evening. police still searching for a suspect, a male suspect, a male shooter believed to be in the area fled the scene after the shooting. police, of course, asking for anybody with any information to contact them. police also telling people in this area to remain vigilant. they do have the shooter that is at large at this point. this would have taken place after what is one of the largest lunar new year celebrations in southern california, if not the country. tens of thousands of people coming together for a two-day celebration. day two of that has now been canceled, would have been on sunday, due to the shooting. police, of course, continuing to investigate. they believe there may even be a second scene that is part of the investigation, as well. but again, motive, as far as this being discriminate, indiscriminate, or a hate crime, all of that is farther down the line, as police need to do their detective work and to find the
7:33 am
shooter as soon as possible. we expect more briefings as soon as we know more. >> we do know a press conference is planned for 8:00 this morning. now to a developing story in the north bay, where authorities are trying to figure out why a woman swerved into a backyard, crashed into the pool, and died. first responders say that she wasn't wearing a seat belt. it happened saturday morning, yesterday morning in san rafael. the tesla had to be taken out of the pool by a crane. the chp says the woman behind the wheel was in her 70s, in that 2019 tesla, when she veered to the right across bay view road, crashing through that fence, across the backyard of the home, and careening into the pool. paramedics arrived on the scene and found her deceased. the woman living in the house was awoken by the crash. she thought it was thunder and lightning. >> and i heard a loud like boom and i jumped up out of bed.
7:34 am
>> reporter: chp says they do not yet know whether the tesla was on auto pilot, but they will download the data from the vehicle to find out. the identity of that driver has not yet been released, nor the cause of death. the chp says that that's up to the marin county coroner's office. oakland's assistant police chief is at the department's helm this morning as chief la ron armstrong remains on administrative leave. oakland mayor sheng thao spoke yesterday about her decision to sideline the chief. it all stems from a report accusing chief armstrong of failing to scrutinize investigations involving a sergeant that was facing multiple misconduct allegations. speaking at city hall yesterday, mayor thao said her administration takes the report's findings seriously, but she made it clear that the chief's paid leave is not a disciplinary action. she says it's a standard process for anyone under investigation within the department. >> our goal here is not to be

punitive. this is not a disciplinary action to chief la ron armstrong. this is an opportunity to more fully review the findings of the report and let our oversight body act and do the job that they're in place to do. >> this investigation comes as the opd is still trying to exit a federal oversight it's been under for more than 20 years. that stems from a civil rights lawsuit. mayor thao stressed her administration is committed to ending that oversight. today marks what would have been the 50th anniversary of the supreme court's landmark abortion rights ruling, roe v. wade. to mark the day, president biden will issue a presidential memorandum on further efforts to protect access to reproductive health care services. today's memorandum announces actions to, quote, protect legal access to medication abortion. and to safeguard patient safety and security. the president says that people

halls. they all begin at noon. in napa, at the county superior courthouse at 2:00 p.m. and as we've been discussion, today is the day. the 4ers and dallas cowboys meet on levi stadium for round two of the divisional playoffs. for football fans, when it comes to niners and cowboys, the game doesn't get much better. this rivalry spans decades. "today in the bay's" pete serranos is live with more. >> reporter: it's a rivalry that dates back spanning many decades, dating all the way back to the 1970s. and there's so many iconic moments between these two teams, especially during the playoffs. so you have the catch back in 1982, the 1982 nfc championship game that really propelled the 49ers dynasty, to steve young finally beating those cowboys in the 1993 nfc championship game. and we've talked a little bit about this topic with nbc sports
7:38 am
bay area 4ers insider matt mioko. >> in the early '70s, the cowboys owned this rivalry. broke the 49ers' hearts. but then the rivalry took a turn in january of 1982, with the catch. and that signaled the beginning of the 49ers dynasty and the end of the cowboys dynasty. >> reporter: this game is by far one of the hottest ticks in all of the nfl playoffs. in fact, we spoke to ticketing marketplace tickpic, who provided some of the price ranges for today's game. >> usually, for a home playoff game, divisional game, tickets are around $200. to get into this game, it's $565. that's for standing room only. sitting is $580. pretty extraordinary prices. haven't seen this level of a ticket price for a divisional game in some time.
7:39 am
>> of course, the big story for the team in the second half of the season is none other than draft purdy. he now he is the starting quarterback, it's been that way for the second half of the season and now just two games away from taking the 49ers to the super bowl. he took care of that first step last weekend, are upping for a total of four touchdowns in that playoff game against the seattle seahawks. we'll see if that streak continues today. kickoff is in a matter of hours at 3:30 p.m. at levi stadium, pete serranos for "today in the bay." still to come on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> if you're looking to take a getaway, the experts tell us it shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg right now. i'm chris chmura. we'll give you a hand with finding travel deals and help you steer clear of delays and cancellations. that's next.

storm warnings, but we do have this gusty wind, frigid windchill, so that put together could be a life -- putting your life in danger, if you don't cover your skin, frostbite could occur in as little as 30 minutes. so please be careful of that, even if the weather looks nice going up to and from lake tahoe, you've got to bundle up, wear all the layers you've got and wear them here in the bay area, as well, as we deal with the gusty winds today and tomorrow. but as we take you on inland, it will be some patchy frost, cold mornings ahead, but still, pleasant sunshine. >> i like seeing the sun across allsen days. cynthia, thanks. more news is next. hope you stay with us.
