we have a lot of niners fans are celebrating this morning. >> weeping in dallas and happy in california. damar hamlin made that appearance. beautiful moment in the snow. >> what a tribute to him. we'll get to the stories in a moment but we want to begin with the details on the weekend shooting happening at a dance studio in monterey park. ten killed and ten wounded following a night of celebrations. >> a manhunt ended with police announcing the 72-year-old was dead and linked to second incident in nearby alhambra. >> we'll talk to the mayor of monterey park in a moment but kate snow joins us live from the scene with the latest. we have the identity now of the shooter, kate. >> reporter: this is the star ballroom where ten people lost their lyes on saturday. we know who the shooter is.

he went to another dance hall according to police with a gun after this one and this morning hearing from the operator of hall saying he knew he would die and lunged for the gun and fought for it. the gunman fled and was found 12 hours later. the man authorities believe is responsible for killing ten people is no longer a threat. investigators say 72-year-old huu can tran opened fire inside that crowded ballroom in monterey park after 10:00 p.m. on saturday. >> additional units requested. multiple victims. gunshot wounds. >> reporter: five men and five women killed and ten wounded. witnesses describe the confusing chaos, initially mistaking the gunfire for celebratory fireworks. outside emergency crews treated the wounded in a nearby parking lot and transported others to area hospitals. it happened in one of the

largest asian american communities in the country about seven miles east of downtown los angeles. earlier saturday thousands were at a festival to celebrate the lunar new year, including amber clemons. you were a few blocks away and what did you hear? >> like, it was, like, six continuous, like, shots. >> reporter: tran had been a familiar face at the star ballroom dance studio in monterey park. it's unclear how often he visited recently, three people who knew him told cnn. while investigators have not yet determined a motive, they say this may not have been the gunman's only target. just 20 minutes after fleeing the first scene, the armed shooter went to a different ballroom dance hall. the sheriff says two people inside wrestled the weapon away from him and he ran. >> he was disarmed by two community members who i consider to be heroes because they saved lives. >> reporter: it took more than 12 hours for officers to locate the elderly suspect inside this white van about 30 miles away from the crime scene.

tactical teams breaking through the van's windows, finding the suspect behind the wheel with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound. overnight authorities carrying out a search warrant of the suspect's home. the shooting leaving his neighbors shocked. >> always kept to himself. you don't know day to day what -- who is who. and what's what. >> reporter: authorities reassuring the community there is no threat anymore. >> you are no longer in danger because this shooter is gone. >> reporter: but the aftershocks are still being felt. >> i tried to reach them. i didn't get any answer. >> reporter: this woman was searching for a friend who visited the ballroom before, worried she may be one of the victims. ten lives ended while out to celebrate a new beginning. >> they are family to us. we have known -- some of them have been here 30 years. >> reporter: investigators say they recovered a gun from the

white van, a gun, a semiautomatic assault weapon taken at the second dance studio. the mayor said he may have been targeting his ex-wife. she spoke to cnn and said she and her husband met at the dance studio behind me. back to you in new york. i know how close knit your community is. have you learned anything more about him? did people in the community kno? of him? is there anything that indicates is there anything that indicatee what might possibly have motivated this? motivated this >>

people who were injured in that shooting. have you talked to any of the victims? what have they been saying about what transpired? >> we have not had a chance. at least i have not had a chance to speak to the victims yet because the authorities are still also -- well, they have not released the names of the victims yet. but in monterey park we have established a crisis resource center at our senior center and we have been treating the victims as those loved ones in need of crisis care during this time. >> our hearts are with you and the community and this unspeakable act. mayor henry lo of monterey park, thank you. a programming note. lester will be there in monterey park. he will anchor nbc "nightly news" from the scene later this evening. another major story this morning. mounting pressure on president biden after even more classified documents were discovered at his home in delaware. the latest batch during a rare fbi search of a sitting

president's home. nbc senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell has details and some reaction, as well. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. the white house is unable to provide a specific description of the total items removed, how many pages, what kinds of documents, and what level of classification are we dealing but they emphasize the president is fully cooperating and invited the department of justice to go room by room through his house. new questions about more secret government papers found inside the biden's delaware home after a stunning weekend announcement that the fbi spent 13 hours friday pouring over the private residence of the sitting president. a rare step the white house called voluntary and not the result of a search warrant. >> the president takes this seriously. that's why the president and his lawyers offered up unprecedented

access to every single room. >> reporter: in a statement, the president's personal lawyer explained that the department of justice removed six items consisting of documents with classification markings and surrounding materials dating back to mr. biden's service in the senate and as vice president. friday's search marks the fifth time since november that sensitive materials were discovered at a location tied to the president. on thursday, in california, before this search, the president spoke about the investigation. >> i think you are going to find there is nothing there. i have no regrets. i am following what the lawyers have told me they want me to do. it's exactly what we are doing. there is no there, there. >> reporter: but some democrats urge the president to acknowledge mistakes were made. >> listen, it's irresponsible. we have should have had a better check and balance. >> reporter: house republicans with oversight powers turn up pressure. >> this special counsel has to deal with the issue of what was the chain of custody, who had these, why did he take them to

begin with. >> this is coming as the president is making a change at the top of the team. what can you tell us? >> reporter: in the coming weeks the president is expected to name a new chief of staff. the most powerful role on his team. jeff zients, who you may recall served as the covid response coordinator early on, will return as chief of staff according to multiple sources. and ron klain, a long-time biden loyalist, is expected to continue supporting the president from the outside as 2024 heats up. >> all right. kelly o'donnell, thank you. two major cities in the south on edge in the wake of deadly incidents involving police that sparked protests. over the weekend those demonstrations turned violent in atlanta. blayne alexander is there for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. over the weekend right here in atlanta we saw a violent clash between police officers and people protesting a new police training facility here in the

city. saturday night six people were arrested after a police car was set on, windows shattered in a building downtown and properties defaced. all of this comes days after a man who was protesting that facility was shot and killed by police. law enforcement said that man fired at officers first injuring a georgia state patrol trooper and there's no body cam of that incident. hoda? >> meantime, there is growing fallout from a separate incident involving police in memphis. what do you hear about that? >> reporter: that's right. five police officers have been fired in georgia after a 29-year-old man died after a traffic stop. tyree nichols was pulled over two weeks ago for a traffic stop. according to the departments weigh involved in what they call two confrontations with police officers as they tried to take game in custody. according to a graphic photo

released by nichols stepfather you can see him in the hospital appearing to be bloodied and with a swollen eye. he died a short time later. the department says the officers violated a number of policies. they have been terminated. the doj and fbi have opened an civil rights investigation into all of this. there's been calls for video of the traffic stop released. the city said they'll do that after the family has a chance to review it. >> says a lot given all five officers were terminated. thanks. almost a quarter after now. a lot to get to. craig is here. i know you were watching football this weekend, as were we. >> a heck of a weekend. i know your household was happy. good morning. the conference championships are now set. the 49ers are going to take on the eagles in the nfc. the bengals and chiefs in the afc. but perhaps this was the weekend's biggest highlight. the return of damar hamlin.

including the chinese new year parade on february 4. >> reporter: i'm bob redell in fremont where ace train service has resumed after mud slides shut it down during the latter part of last week. union pacific says they will be doing a run-through ahead of the train service to make sure tracks were cleared through niles canyon. the first ace train arrived at 5:45 this morning. i did ask a passenger if there were any issues going through niles canyon. she said no. last week's storm sent two mud slides, one on tuesday, a second on wednesday, onto the tracks through niles canyon. one train actually had to stop for some time. there was no damage to the trains, no one was hurt. ace canceled service for the rest of the week. time to get a look at the forecast. kari, how is it looking? still breezy across the bay area. we're reaching to the upper 50s. warmer midweek as the sunshine continues. by the weekend, rain will be back starting on sunday and that

if found guilty, murdaugh could face life in prison without parole. the 54-year-old faces 100 other criminal charges, including drug trafficking and tax evasion. abortion rights supporters rallied across the country yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of roe v. wade from madison, wisconsin, to washington, d.c., thousands of people marched through the streets demanding protections for reproductive rights. the anniversary comes a few months after the supreme court overturned that 1973 landmark decision which guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion. the pilot of a small plane somehow walked away unharmed after making an emergency landing on a busy houston highway yesterday. officials say the plane clipped an 18-wheeler, hit a concrete barrier and burst into flames. incredibly, everybody okay. the highway was shut down in both directions. which led to hours of delays. meanwhile, an emotional scene at graceland yesterday. family, fans, and fellow stars coming together to honor the life of lisa marie presley at her childhood home.

others were wounded. took more than 12 hours before police found the suspected gunman who took his own life. nbc's senior national correspondent kate snow is in monterey park, california, with the latest for us. kate, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. there is some relief in this community because, as you say, this gunman, this suspected gunman, is no longer a threat. for more than 12 hours he was on the run but then the white van was pulled over. tactical teams found him dead inside. on saturday night the sheriff says this man killed ten and wounded ten others. he then went on to a second dance studio. this morning we are hearing from the operator of that hall telling "the new york times" his heart sank seeing the gunman enter and knew he was going to die so he lunged for the weapon and fought for it potentially saving lives.

developments tonight. he will anchor "nbc nightly news" live from monterey park. new questions this morning after even more classified papers were found in president biden's delaware home. the fbi announced over the weekend it spent 13 hours pouring over biden's private residence on friday. the move is unprecedented but the white house called the search voluntary and not the result of a search warrant. this is the fifth time since november that sensitive materials were discovered at a location tied to the president. some new details this morning about a troubling shooting in newport news, virginia, two weeks after police say a 6-year-old shot his teacher in class. a new report alleges that school officials were warned multiple times about the student's behavior. nbc's stephanie gosk with more on this. steph, good morning. >> good morning. that first grade teacher is out of the hospital and recovering from her injuries, but there are growing concerns this morning about the lead up to the shooting with allegations that the teacher had repeatedly asked school administrators for help with the troubled student.
