welcome back to "today in the bay." in today's climate in crisis, with the nice weather we're having you may find yourself along the beaches and encounter bottlenose dolphins. usually they hang out around baja, california. so what's driving this species up our coastline? i spoke with bill keener, a research associate at the marine mammal center for more details.
5:58 am
>> part of it has to do with it's facilitated by climate change because as the water warms up they're used to warmer water in southern california, so they can get that warmer water in monterey bay and then more recently in san francisco bay and even sonoma county and even farther north sometimes they'll make it to mendocino, and we've had some as far north in california as humboldt. so they are here now to stay. they've learned to find resources food and they've learned to navigate the area. so they're here permanently as far as we can tell now. >> now, unfortunately, not all animals do well with climate change and adapting to new environment, but bottlenose dolphins are smart and have been able to find different food sources like salmon, something they can't get off the baja coast. as you heard bill mention the dolphins are here to stay, and the marine mammal center needs

the suspected shooter is now in police custody and is believed to be cooperating with investigators. and we're just learning according to the actual docket he may appear in court as soon as this afternoon. >> and we're getting a better idea of the time line here, the first 911 calls came in around 2:20 in the afternoon from the first of two shooting locations. that was the mushroom farm where the workers work and live. deputies arrived to find five victims shot, one of them, who was still alive. three more bodies were discovered at a nursery some three miles away off highway 1. and then around 4:40 in the afternoon authorities detained the suspected gunman. that man, 67-year-old chunli zhou, was found parked in his car at the sheriff's substation on kelly avenue. the dramatic moment was captured on camera as authorities took him into custody. within the last half hour, we spoke with the mayor of half moon bay who was out of town but returning to her hometown this morning.
