by police late yesterday. >> that happened roughly 400 miles away from monterey park, california, where residents are still reeling from the mass shooting that happened there less than 48 hours before. the death toll in that case has risen. it's now 11 people killed. >> it's january the 24th. 24 days into the new year. get this. there have already been 38 mass shootings in the united states so far this year. we have complete coverage. we will start with nbc's miguel almaguer who made his way to half moon bay overnight. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. this is the first of two locations where the gunman opened fire, as you mentioned, at least seven people are dead and eighth person hospitalized in critical condition. authorities believe it's a workplace shooting. what is the motive is unclear behind the mayhem. police say the hunt for the gunman came to an end at a sheriffs substation. the 67-year-old man suspected of killing at least seven taken

into custody in the sleepy coastal town of half moon bay after being spotted by a deputy. >> he saw the suspect inside of the vehicle laying there in the front seat and then also was able to see a weapon. >> reporter: california's second mass shooting in 48 hours happened at 2 different agricultural locations just miles apart. authorities say at the first scene just before 2:30 p.m. monday four were killed. a fifth gunned down in critical condition. minutes later the gunman driving down the road and allegedly taking three more lives. the sheriff saying the bloodshed unfolding in front of families and children who live on the property. >> i cannot imagine what those kids witnessed today. >> reporter: authorities have now identified the suspect as 67-year-old chunli zhao. the sheriff saying he worked at the mushroom farm

where investigators believe he took the lives of co-workers. >> people saw him today. and it seemed like a normal day for everyone and then this tragedy happened. >> reporter: two hours after the shooting the 67-year-old was arrested. this mass shooting rocking state just two days after investigators say a 72-year-old man killed 11 people in southern california. >> we are still reeling from one. i was there consoling my colleagues who represent those areas. next thing i know they are consoling me. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom was still in los angeles when he heard about the shooting in northern california. tweeting in part, tragedy upon tragedy. this morning another mass shooting and seven more lives lost. >> it hurts. our hearts are broken. >> reporter: a sense of heartbreak that seems tragically routine.

>> reporter: after he was taken into custody police recovered a semiautomatic weapon in his vehicle. meantime, the big question remains, motive. hoda, back to you. >> all right, miguel for us. thank you. the other california community left reeling from a mass shooting. overnight a vigil was held for the 11 victims killed in monterey park. we are learning more about them as well as the gunman and the investigation is moving forward. nbc's steve patterson is on the scene with the details. steve, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this community still in mourning after that horrific shooting saturday night that killed 11 people. overnight we have learned a victim was discharged from the hospital and we are learning more about that 72-year-old suspected shooter who barged into two ballrooms that night. still, police say they don't have a motive. a quiet los angeles suburb still reeling after a lunar new year celebration turned into a scene

of terror. exclusive video obtained by nbc showing the harrowing struggle for survival between the gunman and heroic man who may have prevented even more deaths by wrestling away his weapon from a second ballroom. >> i had the belief i was going to die. my life was ending here. then it came, dawned on me this was the moment to disarm him. i could do something. >> reporter: police say huu can tran entered the star ballroom dance studio after ten on saturday night and opened fire. >> 42 rounds were fired by the suspect at that location. >> reporter: ten people were killed that night. all in their 50s, 60s and 70s. >> i hear the noise, pop, pop, pop, pop. so i just run. >> reporter: 20 minutes after fleeing the first scene, the gunman arrived in alhambra, where 26-year-old brandon tsay was manning the front desk of the dance hall. he gained control of the weapon

and attacker fled. multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation tell nbc news while an exact motive remains elusive, the evidence points to a personal motive. about 80 miles east of monterey park, investigators searched tran's home for clues, finding hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a rifle and materials for homemade firearms suppressers. tran's ex-wife told cnn she met aim at the star ballroom dance studio two decades ago. he worked as a truck driver at the time and could be quick to anger. they divorced in 2006. he spent time volunteering at the studio and clashed with instructors according to adam hood who once befriended him. hood telling "the new york times" he didn't have friends there. an instructor at the ballroom says she is still in disbelief. >> everybody united to be happy, to enjoy, to be family, and then someone just come out of the blue and destroy the whole thing. >> reporter: a relative of a 65-year-old victim writing she spent many years going to the

dance studio. it was what she loved to do. her warm smile and kindness were contagious. police say tran has a limited history including an unlawful firearms charge in 1990. we know they are looking at the personal connection in this area but they can't name a mote i at this point. savannah? >> steve patterson in monterey park, thank you. we are talking about severe weather.nd do not have power after a blast of snow and ice and the next storm is already taking shape. it's expected to unleash winter weather from the southwest all the way to the northeast and potential tornados in the south. al's got a first look at what we can expect. this is a mess. >> it's a wild day today and it's going to get worse. you can already see this storm getting together. rain in texas. snow in the panhandle of texas, as well. parts of new mexico. winter weather alerts for 58 million people from the southwest all the way into new england.

wind alerts for 39 million people, plus we have got a severe threat through tonight. 12 million people, strong tornados possible, damaging winds, gusts. in fact, this is the area from victoria, texas, galveston, new orleans which just had a tornado in december, to mobile, a significant tornado threat and these could be nocturnal tornados which are twice as deadly. so we are watching that. today snow and a wintry mix in the southern plains. enhanced risk for severe weather along the gulf. then for tonight into tomorrow severe storms from norfolk, virginia, down to tallahassee. heavy snow moving into the northeast and the great lakes. we may see the first measurable snow in new york city before it changes over to rain and then it pushes out on thursday. the windy conditions will continue throughout the northeast into the appalachians along with gusts and snow showers hanging around. here is what we are looking at. lubbock, texas, 2 to 4 inches.

oklahoma city 1 to 4. st. louis 4 to 8. detroit could see 4 to 6 inches of snow. into the northeast and new england burlington four to eight, boston one to three, scranton three to five inches and moving to the south rainfall rates up to an inch and a half per hour, flooding possible and again that dangerous risk of tornados, guys, it is going to be a very busy 24 hours. >> all right. al, thank you. details coming to light in a disturbing case in memphis, tennessee. a 29-year-old man died following a traffic stop that escalated into a violent confrontation. the five officers involved have been fired. now the family of tyre nichols is speaking out after they were shown video of the encounter. priscilla thompson joins us. you were with the family after they saw that video. what did they have to say? >> reporter: savannah, good morning.

the family says that this was a horrific and heinous attack by police. and they also revealed the last words they heard their son say on that tape. three cries for his mom. this morning outrage in memphis is growing over the death of 29-year-old tyre nichols at the hands of police. >> he was a human pinata for those police officers. it was an unadulterated, unabashed, non-stop beating of this young boy for three minutes. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: his mother inconsolable after officials showed the family and their attorneys body camera footage from the deadly encounter. >> i watched a minute of it. once i heard my son say "what did i do?" i lost it and i couldn't. >> reporter: the footage shows a january 7th traffic stop that left nichols in the hospital in

critical condition. he died three days later. police say they pulled nichols over for reckless driving, that a confrontation followed and he fled on foot. then another confrontation. after which nichols complained of shortness of breath. all of this his parents say just yards from their home. the family and their attorneys unable to speak in detail about the video due to the investigation but giving a disturbing account of what they saw. >> regrettably, it reminded us of rodney king video. >> reporter: all five officers have since been fired after an internal investigation found they violated multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene and duty to render aid. what does justice look like? >> murder one. charges for all five officers. >> reporter: along with the shelby county district attorney's office, the fbi and department of justice are also

now investigating. as tyre's parents remember their son as a good kid who loved to skateboard and watch the sunset. >> i'm trying to stay strong, but it's very difficult. >> reporter: and the memphis police association, which represents the officers, isn't commenting on the case, but they say that the public and the family deserve a complete account of what happened. and it's also important to note that in addition to the five officers who were fired, two employees of the memphis fire department personnel who were involved in the initial patient care have also been relieved of duty pending an internal investigation. as for when this video could be released publicly, the shelby county district attorney's office says that could happen this week or next saying that they don't want the release to compromise the investigation. savannah. >> so many questions there. priscilla, thank you very much. 7:14. craig joins us. an important health story. >> good morning to you. the fda, food and drug

administration, considering a major shift when it comes to the covid vaccine, including a new proposal to make it an annual shot for most adults and children similar to the flu vaccine. that idea set to be discussed at an advisory panel meeting on thursday. nbc medical contributor dr. natalie azar is here to explain what it means for all of us. good to have you. this flu shot model proposal essentially, what do you make of it on its face? >> i think that all experts would agree that the process needs to be simpler. i think where we are going to see the debate is whether or not there really is a wisdom to updating the vaccine every year for variants that are changing so rapidly. and i think we are also going to hear a lot of discussion about who should be eligible or getting this updated vaccine every year, if you are young and otherwise healthy, is this something that you should be doing? it raises the philosophical question of what is our endpoint? the vaccines are working well to prevent hospitalization and

death. folks who are living with long covid, many patients i see would argue preventing infection is really important. so is it cost effective to be doing this or concentrate on the nasal vaccine, a universal vaccine. so i think it will be a lively debate and i am very much looking forward to tuning in. >> scarce resources and how do you -- >> precisely. >> that is the question. there is talk about, you know, we are supposed to start with the two vaccines and then you get the booster. there is talk about having you, if you never had a vaccine, just coming in and getting the booster and that's it. do we even know if that would work? >> that is the number one red flag for me is we don't. we had to do a few things without all the data we wanted, like authorizing the bivalent vaccine. but the rationale i think is pretty straightforward. if you have someone who is thinking, now i have to get the two shots and then get the booster, does it streamline it?

earn on the other hand, again, like i said, there is no data for that. i think we will hear a little bit of push back. there will be never vaxxers. i don't care one or three shots i won't do it. we'll see. >> we have done a lot of stories on the tripledemic, the flu, rsv and covid and now the numbers are going down. does that mean that the worst is over? we are through that? >> we are out of the woods? what have we learned so far? we do not make predictions, especially live on air about what is going to happen. with rsv we sometimes see another spring surge. with flu we see a lull and the b strain. we have seen the a strain. get your flu shot. it covers four strains, including a and b. with covid we never make predictions. so listen. we are doing really, really well right now. 5% of hospital beds are being taken up by covid as opposed to 21% last year at this time. so things look good but it's just the start of winter. time will tell. >> thank you. you know who likes to predict the future? al. he is right.

it happened at a charter school in des moines, iowa. two others are also in custody as this investigation unfolds. police say the suspect and the two victims were members of opposing gangs. an arkansas man photographed with his feet on nancy pelosi's desk during the january 6th riot has been found guilty on all charges. richard barnett faced eight charges stemming from the insurrection, including theft of government property. barnett said he regretted what happened that day at the capitol, but he did not consider his actions illegal. he could face up to a year in prison at his sentencing in may. jacinda ardern made mer final appearance as new zealand's prime minister this morning. she shocked the nation last week resigning after more than five years saying she had nothing left in the tank. the prime minister says the thing she will miss most is the people because they have been the joy of the job.

8:35 this morning "on your money," tax filing season is upon us. >> stephanie ruhle is up early with us. >> other people are talking stuffed shells and oscars. tax time >> guess what. the irs officially opened the window this week to file your taxes >> file your taxes >> you are like, what window all right. here to break it down, we've got stephanie ruhle. we came off the rails there for a second it was al's fault! okay what is new about the forms that we may see >> let's start with the w-2 form that's the form you get sent by your employer which tells you how much you got paid, how much they took out. it's going to be shorter this year because they consolidated it just some of the boxes nothing to be concerned about. the bigger one to be concerned about is the 1099 form that's for people who are freelance workers. this year you will see some added provisions if you were paid on venmo or one

of those other cash apps, keep your eyes peeled for most of us we are not going to have to pay taxes this year on them. not like if you paid me in venmo over dinner, no, no. this is if you were really working. you are going to have to pay next year, not this year not for everybody. some people in some states if you receive more than $20,000 in payments or 200 transactions, you may owe on that venmo. so just keep your eyes peeled. >> that's a biggie you are not going to have to pay this year but see if you are getting tracked, basically. >> yes. >> how have the tax brackets changed? >> your marginal tax bracket or tax bracket has gone up slightly, which is normal. remember your marginal tax rate moves in steps so, for example, if we were a couple and made $100,000 a year, we would pay 12% tax on our first $20,000, but up to $83,000 it moves up to 22% what you need to do is go on irs.gov and see your highest marginal tax rate.

that's how you will know where things really went up. >> if we were a couple, we would have really fun parties and invite hoda to every one. >> talk about inflation. it's a bummer. it impacted a lot of people's taxes. >> it has. but in this one fo a slight positive. an increased standard deduction. might feel like increase no, no, no it's a good thing. for those of us who have straightforward taxes, not a lot of write-offs, don't run a small business, it means you will get a increase, reduced in your taxable income for most of us you will see a bigger standard deduction between $400 and $800. depending on how you file. so that's a good thing. >> the final panel what else do you need to know? >> tax day, you have three extra days. >> woo >> let's have a party. >> not a huge party. >> this is just because a holiday and a weekend. three days, that ain't three

months you still owe the money. some people say, but isn't there a backlog? the backlog is on the irs' side when they are getting refunds to you. they have kind of cleared that up so you need to make sure you are paying or filing at least on time and you should be getting that return pretty timely. here is an important and negative one some tax provisions we have gotten used to, expanded child tax credit, that's gone away you may not get as big a refund as you thought for new parents, you are going to get some tax credit you need to go to taxadvocate.irs.gov to check it out. >> if you file late, a lot of people file an extension. is that good or bad? >> it's okay you need to make sure you let the government know i'm filing late and you estimate what you think you owe and you send that money in if you just say i'm going to look at it until august, don't do that. you are going to owe fees and fines. imagine that on top of your taxes.

let's get into delicious meal. what are you making for us >> we are going to do some rotisserie chicken stuffed shells we start with a rough chop of the garlic cut off the stem and go down this, like really quickly. >> when you said rotisserie, do i have to make a chicken or can you buy one? >> you can buy a rotisserie chicken. makes it so much easier. cut all the time so we are going to do a rough chop of that and get to the sauce. we add in heavy cream. nice sizzle. then we add in parm. we want to make this thick and creamy, right? we have got some creole seasoning. that's where you get that kick and some italian seasoning it's a mash-up, right? we whisk that together we bring that to a simmer to get that to get nice and thick then we are going to work on this rotisserie chicken. you can easily shred this with two forks, use your hands, or i have a nice trick.

i use a hand mixer. >> what? >> yes get a big bowl throw that chicken in and use the hand mixer. >> and the meat falls off the bone >> falls off, shreds it perfectly in a couple of minutes. it's crazy easy. i have a quick tiktok on it, too. >> you have the sauce, the chicken has been pulled off the bone now everything sits for a second. >> so we add our chicken into some ricotta we have broccoli to get some veggies in here. i also like to sub in some spinach. we've got some onions. we've got some more parm because, hey, we have to have that. >> this is like a broccoli cheese vibe which is a comfort food when it's cold out. >> yes then add in a little bit more creole we mix that together you get that nice and smooth then here we have got our filling. >> how did craig and al do this? >> come on
