we will check in with mike in a bit, but kari gets to go first this time. it's warmer across some spots in the bay area. some of the valleys can't feel the high winds, so we are seeing temperatures anywhere from 36 in morgan hill where the wind is calm to 56 degrees in fairfield. compare that to yesterday. take a look at this. it's 30 degrees warmer right now in santa rosa than it was yesterday at this time. 21 degrees warmer in napa. you are also probably hearing those winds picking up, especially in the upper elevations. overall, it's a fairly calm start to our day. the camera kind of shaking around in oakland, and as you get started, low 50s this morning but low 60s for this afternoon. mike, you are seeing a calm afternoon out there. >> yeah, you are calm. we're calm. the only issue is outside of the green sensors you see, north 680, the crew has not yet been

cleared from the caltrans report. we see the sensors, a slow drive north of 84. 84 does show a little build coming towards the lane shift. that's not unusual through that portion of the bay. also out of the altamont pass, seeing the volume build a little bit. smooth flow of traffic in through contra costa. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we begin this hour with developing news from half moon bay. san mateo's county coroner's office formerly identifying six of the 11 victims. family members identifying the seventh victim. those victims range in ages from 43 to 73. all of those seven families torn apart by the violence, children, spouses and siblings are dealing with how their loved one was take chen away.

the suspect, chunli zhao, did not enter a plea. a judge also assigned him two public defenders with the next court date set for february 16th. many families want to know what they can do to help families impacted by the mass shooting. more than 40 families are displaced from the mushroom farm targeted in that rampage. many left behind everything. donations have been pouring in. the non-profit heading up that effort is the best donation you can give is money so the families can get what they need. find information on how to donate on our website, nbcbayarea.com. and then there was a vigil to help those heal from the mass shootings. photos of those killed were illuminated by candlelight. all their names were read out

behind at hurst and euclid. if you know who he is, you are asked to contact berkeley police. we are getting new images involving a case that ultimately led to the oakland police chief being placed on leave. a police charge is accused of crashing into a car in san francisco, then driving away. surveillance video captured that incident. it appears to show the department's suv crash into a parked white mercedes in san francisco. a 16 page report by an independent law firm said the suv stopped for a few seconds before driving away. inside was the sergeant and an opd officer he was dating at the time. and then he also fired his weapon inside a department service elevator, and he was not

are certain types of cheese -- no. >> it's not in a good way. we are going to see mild weather. when we get these little spurts of warm weather we better enjoy it, because things will change. look at the temperatures this morning as you are stepping out the door. we have mid-50s to start in the north bay. there the winds are guesting up in some of the hills. you may not feel it in the valleys, but that's what is holding the temperatures up. where the winds are calmer in some of the valleys, temperatures are dipping. we are seeing that in morgan hill right now. in oakland, we have low 50s to start. it will be another clear day and slow to warm up, but this is where we are headed for mid-60s this afternoon. los gatos reaching 64 degrees. we will reach 66 degrees in morgan hill for the east bay.

martinez, 65 degrees as well as 65 in antioch. we will also reach the mid-60s in san mateo. for san francisco, also in the mid-60s today with a light northwesterly wind. for the north bay, up to 68 in sonoma and 71 in santa rosa. it has been nice, clear, sunny, and we're also expecting changes as the high pressure that kept it dry moves away. we will bring back the chance of rain, but as of now the models are backing off on how much rain we are going to see, but definitely a big dip in the temperatures. it's going to be much colder once that system passes through the weekend, there will be another one behind that as we go towards next weekend, but the rain may dry up once it gets here. we are not seeing any atmospheric rivers or anything like that. as we are starting to say, okay, it has been a while since we had a good downpour here, we are

still at a surplus. we are not hurting here for any rain, and we are still well above what we should have. as we go into the next couple of weeks, we will see the numbers decreasing, but still, not really worried at this point. our temperatures will be in the upper 60s for today but look at the changes going into the weekend and next week. we will need sweaters, jackets, gloves, hats, scarves, boots, all of that stuff because we will have very cold weather and even freezing for next week. mike, you are still seeing a smooth commute out there? >> things are pretty calm out there. i am getting nervous about the forecast. i know you will warn us as to what the changes are. there's no change here and that's not a good thing. we have a traffic control on 92 because of the sinkhole in the westbound lanes. one lane has been improvised

over on the shoulder basically. lower the speeds between 280 and half moon bay. we have seen slowing every day since that sinkhole appeared. and then here the drive is building coming into livermore but still a standard pattern. the crews are picking up and so far we have the crew registered on the caltrans report on 680 later than anticipated. over here looking smoothly across the bay bridge. no backup at the toll plaza, but the volume is building we can see by the camera. 5:21 right now. one bay area filmmaker is helping raise funding for orphan children in tanzania.

support from the community. a lot of people left flowers, candled, messages of support and stuffed animals in there. there's much more today than yesterday when we were out here. in this video you just saw, grandparents, a wife and three children, they are pleading for more support from the community. their father is one of the men killed, and their uncle is the sole survivor of the shooting. they have no money and they are in mexico, and they are asking the community to support her uncle during his recovery. and marciano martinez jimenez was also killed in the shooting.

>> i remember as early as i could choose, like, to be my godfather, i chose him every single time for every single occasion. >> yesterday afternoon the suspect in the shootings, 66-year-old chunli zhao, he did not enter a plea to any of the seven counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. those are some of the charges he faces. he could face life without patrol or the death penalty. it will be up to the d.a. which route they go for. he was assigned two attorneys, and chunli zhao claimed

responsibility for the shootings during his arrest. >> so much sadness there. thank you. san francisco police are looking for the gunman that shot and injured two people last night in polk gulch. it happened on california street. so far no word on what led to the shooting. and then footage of the attack on paul pelosi expected to be released today. here's a live look at the pelosi's home in san francisco. the video was recorded on a officer's body camera. a coalition of news organizations including nbc bay area filed. the news agency say it's vital for prosecutors to publicly

share evidence that refutes any false information about the attack. david depape is accused of attacking paul pelosi inside of the home with a hammer. depape has pleaded not guilty to all charges. west contra costa schools facing pressure on two fronts, from students and teachers. last night teachers rallied ahead of the board meeting and they are arguing salaries are not keeping up with rising living costs, and some students are talking about discrimination in the classrooms. >> they have been s suppressing us. >> it started when video emerged of what the district says is a

fired substitute teacher throwing a student to the ground because using the "n" word. believe it or not, today marks three years since the dawn of the covid pandemic here in california. california reported its first cases january 26th, 2020, a few days after america's first confirmed case in washington state. nearly 11 million confirmed cases in california alone, and close to 100,000 deaths, and about 88 million vaccines administered. all this time later, california's test positivity rate is nearly approaching 9% there, and this is during the holidays. later today the fda is asking an expert panel to decide how often should people get the covid-19 booster shots.

and then the white house thinks the president has a lot to show off. >> yeah, i think so too. we just got the latest gdp numbers, showing 2.9% growth. stronger than expected. the inflation numbers show more good news. biden knows he's vulnerable on peoples' perception of the economy. the white house indicates he will try and set the record straight. no doubt he will speak about the need to raise the debt ceiling. failure to do that could put the economy in recession. house leader, kevin mccarthy, says he wants to negotiate over raising the debt ceiling. the white house says it won't negotiate. it's unclear what mccarthy would ask for. chuck schumer says until mccarthy has a plan, a plan that can pass the house with republican support, going to the white house is like going with

no cards in his hand. the committee and treasury going back and forth over hunter biden's banks records. the same committee is asking hunter biden's art dealer to come and answer questions before lawmakers. not a subpoena yet but that's likely coming. he sold paintings to anonymous buyers. white house lawyers suggested keeping the buyers anonymous, because then the president would know who paid the generous prices to his son, and thus the president could not be influenced because he wouldn't know, but the system has raised as many questions as it has prevented. we will watch what is happening with that committee. the treasury department talking about it on social media. you can find me @scottmcgrew on

twitter. the american cancer society says nearly 2 million people will be diagnosed this year. more than 600,000 will die. lung and colon rectal cancer cause the most deaths. nuclear medicine is currently meeting in san francisco exploring nuclear medicine as a way to fight cancer. one doctor explains the advancement researchers are making are aimed at president biden's goal to reduce cancer deaths. >> the nuclear medicine will look at imaging, and it's a non-profit organization, and it introduced the initiative, and that's to raise $100 million and to invest in such

to compete, because they have a lot of knowledgeable fans showing up. this is the fourth time the sap center is hosting the u.s. figure skating championships, and it's a good thing for the city of san josé's coffers as well. >> they make it look so easy spinning around. >> yeah, they make it look easy. >> you can watch our live coverage on nbc sports usa network and peacock. a lot of fun. 5:51 right now. it's time to get a look at the forecast. kari, i know you just got information about our drought monitor. how is it looking for us? >> great news here on the drought monitor front. i want to take you back a couple weeks and what it looked like before or even as we were getting all of the storms coming through. we saw a lot of the darker oranges there showing the severe drought that has been affecting parts of the central valley.

last week we got good news where they decreased those areas where we are seeing the severe drought. even better news this morning as we take it to what we just got out a few minutes ago, we saw even less of the orange over parts of the central valley. we also saw a lot more of the yellow spreading parts of the central coast into the santa cruz mountains. what that means is they are no longer in that severe or moderate drought. we are just seeing abnormally dry conditions for spots like santa cruz, the bay area. it was not a change for us here. we are still in a moderate drought. there was a 10% decrease in severe drought across the state, so some really good news there. we also have not had our sierra snow-melt that is still over 200% of its normal amount. even if we don't get anymore snow we will end our sierra season with over 100% of its normal amount of sierra

send tanks to the war-torn country. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire tv, apple tv and online. thank you for joining us. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. we will check in with mike in a minute, but first a look at the forecast. it's going to be a little warmer compared to what we have ahead in the forecast. we are starting out with our commute heading to work in oakland. it's in the mid-50s in some spots, and pretty windy in some of the hills so that kept the temperatures up. late morning and early afternoon, we will reach in the 60s for today and most likely the last day we will see temperatures this warm. up to 71 in santa rosa. 66 in oakland, as well as san josé and morgan hill. for the tri-valley, low 60s there and low 60s in san francisco. we will talk about the cooldown and when we can get rain. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, you are watching the

roads and seems like there has not been any big issues. >> no big issues, but a smaller crash just around auto mall parkway. one detail says there were three vehicles, maybe four that were, quote, racing through the area. do watch that. no major injuries, and not a major slowdown but we are watching for the activity. i am tracking activity in the area towards hayward, southbound 880, and that's slowing. the earlier slowdown there as well as in pleasanton looks like it eased up a bit. we have the build up out of the altamont pass and the big rig on the shoulder. and another issue, maybe concrete in the roadway approaching eden county, and it's off the dublin grade. that's another report coming in with no major slowing. the rest of the bay shows an easy drive along the peninsula. the metering lights on since
