rain. it's the weekend. although we're tracking rain, i want to give you a heads-up and say it's not going to be a washout week. a couple of rain chances here and there. it is feeling colder so you are not imagining this up through the north bay. we have some 30s on the map when you compare these temperatures to yesterday. look at this, 29 degrees colder compared to the last 24 hours in santa rosa. fairfield, 19. down through hayward about ten degrees colder. we don't have that flow anymore. we're not seeing the gusty winds. but into sunday here is a closer look at what to expect. we have the rain chances and a drop in the cold overnight lows. i'll guide you through all of that in a few minutes. first an update on breaking news with mike. a big deal for b.a.r.t. we escalated the situation so b.a.r.t. says there's no service for the green line or the red line and there's no transbay service. system wide delays expected

because of that. we started with unscheduled track maintenance outside of oakland stations. we have ac transit providing an alternate from 19th and broadway that takes you into the city. keep that in mind and we'll continue to update you. the roadways are showing a typical friday lighter volume. we'll have a delay through oakland out of pleasanton and oakland. the green line canceled out of berryessa and, again, we have a problem for the transbay service. there's not a lot of extra traffic on the bay bridge right now. get ready, niners fans. there is a trip to the super bowl on the line this sunday. do we need to remind you the niners head to philly to take on the eagles in sunday's championship game. >> they are ready and so is kris sanchez. kris, 49ers faithful at home, we're all ready.

>> reporter: i think the niners are trying to turn me into a sports reporter the way they keep extending their season, but i'm here for it. levi's stadium will be quiet this weekend. we have a number of watch parties you can watch with other 49ers faithful. a lot of fans made their way to philadelphia already. we know the niners will be heading there later on today to watch the niners take on the eagles in a matchup expected to be the one to watch this weekend this is a passionate rivalry. the last time the eagles and niners paired off there were a lot of scuffles in the stands. we're hoping this time the action will stay on the field. here's where to watch the action if you didn't get a ticket and what to watch for on the field. >> our defense is going to have their toughest test of the year as well. when you look at a team that is a complete team outside of the 49ers, in my mind, the philadelphia eagles are the next

sunday. watch our pregame live show that will happen at 11:00 a.m. and nbc sports bay area will air postgame coverage following the game. 6:03 now. the recent swell of violence has many in the asian community on edge especially at the time when families are coming together to celebrate the lunar new year. san francisco police say they ramped up presence for the new lunar new year parade next weekend. in monterey park and half moon bay there have been two recent attacks on elderly asian men in san francisco. the city attorney says there are steps you can take to reduce gun violence if you feel someone poses a threat. >> if you know of someone who is a danger to themselves or to others who is in possession of a firearm, our office, we can petition a civil court to remove their firearms. >> city attorney david chiu says san diego county has led the way with its strategy and has removed hundreds of weapons from potentially dangerous people. >> this has been an emotional

week for the aapi community, hundreds of whom gathered last night in san francisco. in chinatown mourners hohn orpd the victims in monterey park and half moon bay calling for improved mental health care and gun reform. the head of the women's shelter says one easy solution would be call centers to address mental health crisis before it's too late. >> so that people have somewhere to call if someone is showing the signs. it's not out of the blue almost ever.leaders are coming coming together. we have a page with information on how to help the victims of this tragedy. also information on how to make a connection with a counselor if you are struggling or you need to talk to someone. head to nbcbayarea.com/supporthmb. bay area law enforcement

will pay close attention to today's release of police body camera footage in memphis after the death of a man in police custody. 29-year-old tyre nichols died after police pulled him over in a traffic stop. people gathered for a vigil. prosecutors say five officers severely beat nichols who died three days later. those officers have since been criminally charged. all five fired. state investigators believe the charges will stick. >> what happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. this was wrong. this was criminal. >> they will be bracing for potential protests once the video is released. it's supposed to happen after 4:00 p.m. our time. new this morning san jose has a full complement of seats the previously vacated seat.

arjun batra was selected. he fills the seat vacated by matt mahan when mahan took over mayoral duties. on tuesday the council chose domingo candelas who filled the seat of new santa clara county supervisor sylvia arenas. 6:07 this morning as we take a live look at san francisco and get started with the day. that's a beautiful shot. we do see the fog around. meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking what we can expect there. you say the fog is not going to stick around for most of the day. it will clear and we will get a lot of sunshine. the active weather pattern that kicked off in 2023 our water rain update is looking fantastic. santa rosa we're at a surplus to san francisco. over 9 inches. oakland over 11 inches. that was one of our top accumulations. santa rosa at about 139% of average rain to date. in case you missed yesterday's

drought monitor update, this was two weeks ago. pay attention here. that little orange circle is gone. that was the extreme category, so we did see 10% less improvement in the drought and that's always fantastic to see. let's get a look at some gas prices with mike. >> i think i see prices going up. the same thing reading off gas buddy. we'll start in san mateo county in belmont on harbor boulevard. barely beats the $4 mark. down to morgan hill for their low, $3.87. tougher prices throughout the south bay. the bay area's best and one of the best in the state exxon on almador just down the road a couple blocks from the a&a

the economy coming up in 30 minutes when we talk politics. santa clara's intel sounding the alarm yesterday during its investor call. the chip company saying demand is falling. probably because the work from home/school from home era is passed. people bought one or two. american families now have too many computers. intem has too many chips. gallo restructuring, that will lead to layoffs. i bring it up because some of the research in the wine industry. we found the wine industry is it in a lot of trouble. younger people do not drink wine or, even worse for the industry, they don't drink at all. the only growth is in americans over 60. the biggest threat to the wine industry, young people. "the new york times," millennials, are not drinking enough. we're going to delve into that

63 degrees in livermore. 63 in oakland. let's take a look at the timing for your hour by hour forecast. conditions stay dry tonight into saturday and sunday the showers pop up. not expecting complete rain. you will notice the winds kicking up. even if you don't see rain, the wind will be a factor in your outdoor plans. have everything tied down heading into sunday night. mostly focused to the south. a couple hundredths of an inch for sunday. because this is a colder air mass it will bring down some of the snow elevations and, yes, it

is expected to bring sierra snow. the travel conditions might get tough heading into sunday. we're talking about gusty winds. as we look at the snow coming down, we do have the latest outlook on those temperatures when it comes to february 1th and 5th f. it starts to melt we see issues into april. we'll be below average. this is more seasonable. temperatures are expected to get cold and a quick note if you head into l.a. on monday, you will see the impact of this system as well. we have not seen this season yet but it will be the cold overnight lows into monday and tuesday that could trigger freeze warnings as well in the interior valleys.

they'll be here at mac dutra park at 5:00 tonight and this is the place where the communities come to leave stuffed animals, flowers, messages of love and support for the seven men and women shot and killed this past monday and the one man still recovering in the hospital. yesterday friends and family of marciano martinez jimenez came to this public memorial to pray for that farm worker who was murdered earlier this week. marciano played in a band, you can see him playing the conga. always had a smile, a positive attitude. a neighbor who took english and computer classes with him at a local community college said he was always looking to be better as a farm worker, to better his life. while here at the memorial, marciano's sister-in-law sent a message to those in the bay area and back home in mexico. >> they can feel empty.

my family feel really sad, they feel really upset about this situation. >> reporter: our colleague damian trujillo learned pedro perez, the only person who has survived the shooting, underwent another surgery yesterday at stanford hospital. the mexican consulate is working with him and his family to ensure they have all the counselor help they need. now other people need your help, not only him but the people who survived this, the families impacted, so an organization called farm worker caravan is hoemding an emergency food and clothing drive for victims of the shooting and of the recent flooding. you can drop off donations between 10:00 this morning, 4:00 this afternoon at the catholic charities washington united youth center in san jose, or donate online at farmworkercaravan.com. to reiterate that vigil tonight at 5:00 here at mac dutra park in half moon bay. there will be song, there will be prayer and tri-language,

spanish and mandarin because of the victims, those are the languages they spoke. in half moon bay, bob redell, half moon bay. >> hopefully there can be some healing as well. thank you, bob. anchor janelle wang sat down for an exclusive interview with the suspect, 66-year-old chunli zhao. police say he has been talking to officers since day one but this is the only time he's spoken to a journalist. janelle says in part he told her he has regrets. >> i said, can we talk about what happened on monday? and he said yes. and i said, sources told our very longive unit you felt bullied for years, that you were treated poorly. he said that was true. he also said he work really long hours. >> the district attorney says that he will either seek life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

that decision has not yet been made because this is still the beginning of their investigation. you can hear more about janelle's interview by heading over to our website, nbcbayarea.com. later this morning we are expected to get a copy of the body camera video from the attack at the home of nancy pelosi. a judge early in the week said it would happen as soon as yesterday. the october attack sent paul pelosi to the hospital. the suspect, david depape, is facing federal and state charges. the judge also ordered the release of the 911 call and police interviews with the suspect. the former house speaker yesterday says she has no intention of watching the video herself. >> no, it would be a very hard thing to see an assault on my husband's life. he's made some progress but at least three more months before he'll be back to normal. >> now the release comes after

>> better hope it wears off by monday morning. so we're approaching the forecast today. it looks nice for this friday. it's going to be pleasant. we even saw some 70s which was comfortable and lots of sunshine. i mentioned hiking earlier. the south bay hiking forecast. we're going to keep sunny conditions throughout our daytime highs will be in the 60s and enjoy the sunshine even leading into saturday. your weekend forecast will dip when it comes to the temperatures, so today we'll be in the 60s. by saturday and sunday we do start to see the temperatures cool off in the 50s. perhaps you're heading to big sur. by saturday 57. then we start to see an increase in cloud cover. we do have a system approaching. not everybody will see a lot of rain out of this system. so let's talk about the napa valley forecast. the biggest impact for the north bay will be the cold overnight lows behind the system that

moves through on sunday. however, if you're heading to south lake tahoe, your windows of opportunity now, tomorrow, you should be okay. we have 40s in the forecast. by sunday we do have a storm rolling through later into the day will bring not only snowy conditions but also gusty winds at times up to the sierra so please be mindful of that. a quick moving system heading into monday but it is going to provide some accumulations. not as much as we saw last time but enough that it could cause some issues on the roads. speaking of the roads, let's check in with mike. the b.a.r.t. system has a major problem. an update you may have gotten wind of. a tremendous backup considering this is a friday and we had a lighter volume all around the bay folks are avoiding b.a.r.t. heading from the east bay into san francisco because the transbay tube which will take you from the west oakland area into the city is not accessible by trains. now you might have heard the transbay tube just opened. that's for trains coming over from san francisco and that

limited service means you have to scramble around on the oakland side and figure out how to link up with the rest of the system. so b.a.r.t. is still advising you avoid taking their train, use another alternate form of transportation, perhaps ac transit, the nl line over to 19th and broadway. consider that. the roadways are relatively smooth but i'm watching for the ripple to impact the bay bridge toll plaza and possibly the san mateo bridge. the bridge does look smooth now over to the peninsula side and out of san francisco smooth for a friday. something that hams on the bay area roadways or rails will impact the entire bay area. back to you, scott. coming up on "today in the bay," polls show americans are very worried about the economy, but should

compared to the past 24 hours in santa rosa. that's quite a drastic change. forecasted highs for this afternoon a few clouds rolling through aside from that mild daytime highs in san jose. 65 degrees. oakland 60 degrees. martinez 62 and let's take a look at the timing for that incoming rain. now notice saturday we stay dry. here is a time stamp up here where it will be cooler. you'll notice temperatures cool off into saturday afternoon and then into sunday, here it is. the green you see on the map a scattered rain chance. take a look. not completely widespread. not a whole lot of rain. just a couple hundredths of an inch. a lot of that will be more focused to the south near monterey, st. lucia, could see a possibility of lower elevation snow at 3,500 feet because it is a colder system. another thing you will notice, though, behind that frontal boundary is going to be the wind kickup and the drop in temperatures. as we say farewell to the month

noticing more traffic heading south on 880 down to the san mateo bridge slowing across the span. more volume on a friday. i believe they've shifted away which has impacted with more traffic down to richmond and through oakland because of the problem for the transbay tube. the b.a.r.t. system has an issue from the east bay into san francisco via the transbay tube. there's a power issue with the third rail. i've been listening to the b.a.r.t. media line but we have a spokesperson for the b.a.r.t. system and, jim, thank you for joining us today, this morning, getting up early and giving us the details. an issue causing a system wide delay. what is accessible and what is not right now. >> we have major delays in all directions. we have some transbay service to west oakland but for a lot of people that doesn't really help.

we have trains going into oakland but they're turning back. what we're suggesting is to seek alternate means of transportation, ferries or buses all due to track that damaged near 12th street in an underground section of railway. we've had to shut down all of the tracks in that area so that we can get and do these major repairs safely. >> you mentioned that there is service you might hear about but it is not a viable option for the bulk of the commute from san francisco into oakland and does not go from the other direction. ac transit, the ferries are options for you. they all use the clipper card or mobile app? >> that's true. the 19th station has a direct bus that goes in and i believe you can show clipper and maybe

between san francisco and oakland. they have some damage to the third rail providing power to the b.a.r.t. system on the oakland side at the oakland y and we don't know when they will have it repaired. consider b.a.r.t. out of the picture now for the time being because it is impacting the rest of the east bay and rippling out. more traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. north 880 through oakland seeing a higher volume and building to the bay bridge. we also see a little shift, folks taking the nimitz down which is also an option from the east bay. your seven-day forecast is looking like this, mild today. saturday we'll stay sunny and you'll notice the cloud cover rolls through. a spotty rain chance, so it's not going to be a stormy sunday but it is going to be bringing a little bit of that colder air which could bring up the possibility of some of that cold freezing low 20s and 30s into monday and tuesday freeze
