good morning, it is saturday, january 28th, 7:00 as we take this live look outside in san francisco. foggy as we welcome in the final weekend of january. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast and i suspect you're going to be talking about that fog. >> we haven't talked about the fog in quite a while it seems. we've been talking about rain, cold temperatures, but luke at sutro tower camera, that is salesforce blanketed by all of

this cloud cover and the fog. maybe this morning drinking that coffee in bed and watching us under those blankets staying nice and cozy. we have that dense fog advisory through the north bay, east bay valleys and in the east bay shoreline, down into san jose as well until 9:00 a.m. keep the distance between the cars, the low beams, you know what to do to get yourself safely where you're going this morning. along with the fog we have very cold temperatures ranging in the 30s, santa rosa, we have some 40s down here in palo alto, and we have some major changes coming ahead this weekend. all of that coming up in about 12 minutes. thanks. this morning, emotions are running high across the nation as we all try to process the horrifying facts and now videos of the deadly police beating of tyre nichols. many are struggling, heartbroken, and furious about his death at the hands of memphis police officers. and it has us once again asking will anything change this time?

thousands of americans gathered for protests last night after the video was released from memphis to the bay area, most remaining peaceful, but last night in los angeles demonstrators and police clashed. you could see officers in riot gear and what appears to be smoke coming from the back of that patrol car. again, most protests were peaceful, just as the nichols' family requested. still, the graphic video is sparking outrage. "today in the bay's" thom jensen has a closer look and a warning, it's difficult to watch. >> reporter: body camera footage from the five memphis officers show it started with a traffic stop. >> i didn't do anything. >> i didn't hurt -- >> turn around. >> all right, all right, all right. >> reporter: and after officers forced 29-year-old tyre nichols to the ground -- >> get on your stomach! >> i am, please! >> they pulled their tasers. he managed to get up and run. after a foot chase, two officers take him down, and he's pepper

sprayed as a third officer arrives on the scene. nichols, who is just 100 yards from his mom's home now screams out for her to help him. >> in my view, this was a beatdown by five thugs with badges. >> reporter: former san jose independent police auditor says the use of force was not reasonable or necessary. >> watch out, i'm going to baton the [ bleep ] out of you. >> reporter: if you pay close attention to all of the clips showing officers beating him with batons, kicking him in the face and taking turns punching him for several minutes and kicking him in the head. >> this culture of violence in police departments around america, if we're tired of seeing it, and if you're tired of reporting it, then what we have to do is really start focusing on the essence of policing. what is policing about in america? what should it be about? >> reporter: the judge says the officers undoubtedly violated

common police protocols because it took more than 20 minutes after the beating ended before nichols was given any sort of medical attention. he died three days later. >> going for my gun too. >> he grabbed -- >> reporter: in total, the memphis police released more than an hour of video showing the attack from several angles and showing the officers standing around afterwards and appearing to coordinate their stories about what happened as if it was justified. >> we are tired of routine traffic stops turning into death sentences for african americans. >> reporter: terry wylie with the oakland branch of the naacp says the video exposes a common problem of racism within lots of law enforcement agencies. >> cultures of bias continue to exist against african americans in police departments across this nation. regardless of the race of the police officer. >> reporter: thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> judge cordell, whom thom

spoke with said racial profiling in traffic stops is a prolific problem across america. she went on to say the data shows that most of the deadly interactions between police and people of color start with traffic stops. she says taking the responsibility of traffic stops away from armed officers and giving it to some unarmed entity would save lives and prevent a lot of racial profiling. all five officers, by the way, on that video have been fired and now face multiple charges including second degree murder. still, the calls for justice for tyre nichols are echoing across the country and here in the bay area. demonstrators rallied and marched through the streets of san francisco. "today in the bay's" gia vang continues our coverage. >> down market street this group of protesters is saying no more killer cops. >> cops do not have the

authority to kill people like this. we're demanding a mass movement be made, convict these kill e. >> reporter: givon washington is talking about the five memphis police officers now charged in the beating death of 29-year-old tyre nichols during a traffic stop. the crowd gathered at powell and market streets in san francisco just an hour after the police body cam footage was released. washington can't bring himself to watch it, knowing the details is hard enough. >> once they get inside of the police car started smoking and joking around while he's laying there calling for his -- calling for his mom. >> reporter: the officers were fired last week facing second degree murder charges. they are all black. >> that's even more of an indictment of this system. >> reporter: in anticipation of any unrest, many shops closed early for the night. westfield mall put up these barriers and oakland businesses like this car dealership were seen boarding up. law enforcement agenies were vigilant across the country. in memphis, peaceful protests as the family had requested. in l.a., officers wearing riot

gear as protesters breached the barricade. on the east coast outrage spilled into the streets of new york city after video of the deadly encounter was released. police arrested three tied to vandalism of an nypd squad car. people also took to the streets in boston all the while protesters we spoke with were cautious about change. many said not much has since the murder of george floyd. >> we were in the streets like three weeks protesting, and it didn't do no good. here we go with another situation that's even worse. >> even though i don't think reform will do much right now, it is where we have to start. >> reporter: gia vang "today in the bay." the white house says president biden also has seen the video. in a statement, the president said he's, quote, outraged and pained by it. he spoke with reporters before the video was released. >> i spoke with tyre's mother and expressed my condolences, and told her that i was going to be making a case to the congress

to pass the george floyd act, to get this under control. i can only do so much in the executive order of the federal level. >> the president also said the family deserves a swift, full, and transparent investigation. state and local leaders also are responding to the video, many putting out statements including governor gavin newsom. his office tweeted in part, quote, tyre nichols should be alive today. we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. today we are a country in mourning and must continue our work nationwide to push reforms to prevent excessive use of force and save lives. turning now to another tragedy that happened this week, hundreds of people gathering last night for a vigil for healing in half moon bay. candles and flowers surrounding the community members standing together in prayer and hope. several speakers shared messages of solidarity for the seven men and women who lost their lives,

the sole surviving victim in the hospital and for the community that's been working in the shadow for generations. others demanding change. >> there's so many things we need to do, like we should understand each other no matter what your background is, your job, your like skin color or your language ability. >> the city of half moon bay is organizing several events to help the community process the tragedy. the next event will be a memorial and candlelight procession on tuesday. the archbishop of san francisco spent yesterday afternoon at the scene of the shootings. salvador first stopped at the mountain mushroom farm. he sprinkled holy water at the entrance joined by family members of some of the victims along with witnesses and others who live on the farm. then at concord farms off

welcome back, just shy of 7:13 on your saturday morning, a look at a blanket of clouds at just the very top of the sales force tower as we look from our sutro camera on a foggy morning, 50s and 60s today, and a cooldown even expected tomorrow. another shocking video released yesterday was the body cam footage of the attack on paul pelosi. the husband of congresswoman pelosi, former speaker of the house was attacked at their home in san francisco in october. the suspect, david depape faces state and federal charges. also released was surveillance video from outside their home as well as paul pelosi's 911 call. here's a portion of it. >> is the capitol police around? >> no, this is --

>> they're usually here at the house protecting my wife. >> no, this is san francisco police. >> i've got a problem, but he thinks everything's good. >> okay. call us back if you need -- >> no, no, no this gentleman just came into the house and wants to wait here for my wait to come home. >> what is your name? >> my name's paul pelosi. >> the body cam video starts with two sfpd officers showing up to their home after pelosi made that 911 call. they wait at the front door for about 15 seconds before the door opens, and we want to warn you, this next part is hard to watch. >> hi, guys. >> how are you doing? >> how are you? >> what's going on, man? >> everything's good. >> hi. >> drop the hammer. >> nope. >> hey, hey, hey. >> what is going on right now? >> we're not getting an answer.

>> back up. code 3. >> so you saw there after depape hit pelosi over the head with the hammer, officers immediately rushed in, got depape on the floor and handcuffed him. it all happened so quickly. also released was this video from a capitol police surveillance camera outside the pelosi home before the attack. you can see at 2:04 a.m. it appears as though depape calmly walks into the yard. he looks around, and then leaves. we advanced video to the next sequence where depape comes back with bags. he rummages around for another few minutes, eventually taking out what appears to be a pair of

page. happening today, another somber milestone, today marks the two-year death of grandpa vicha. he was a leader in the aapi community and was involved in the movement to stop asian hate. in 2021, the 84-year-old was shoved while on a walk. he died from injuries he sustained. last october san francisco renamed a city street in his honor in the neighborhood. advocates will hold a memorial and a lantern gathering ceremony in around of grandpa vicha near chinatown. it begins at 5:00 this evening. prosecutors are trying to stop disgraced crypto executive sam bankman-fried from talking to anyone linked to his old company. that's according to a new report from "the new york times." bankman-fried faces fraud charges for his time at ftx, the cryptocurrency platform he founded. in a court filing, prosecutors say he reached out to ftx's

general counsel using the signal app, which can automatically delete messages. prosecutors say the man is a potential witness and they're concerned he could have reached out to other witnesses as well. sbf as he's known is under house arrest at his parents' home in stanford. turning now to the 49ers. they are in philadelphia for the nfc championship game. but before they left they got a big sendoff from the bay area. the 49ers buses left team headquarters in santa clara en route to san jose airport. they then boarded their united airlines charter flight just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon, and they all had an in-flight snack. bags of chick-fil-a among the players we spotted, jimmy g., although he's not clear to play this weekend. and what about the faithful? plenty of fans lining the street of santa clara to cheer the team on as they left and plenty more

and too cute not to wear. tomorrow we'll be decked out red and gold and supporting the team from here in the bay area. we'll start this saturday with a look at the next 48 hours. yes, we have that overcast and the foggy start to this saturday, but overall, it's going to be a calm day. clouds will move in later as we start to get ready for that next chance of rain that's moving in to the bay area. we have a lot to talk about with that rain and the week ahead that's going to bring very, very cold temperatures. if you're going to join mike out there for the celebration at santana row this morning from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00, very beautiful day. go out there, say hello to him and then get ready for changes in the afternoon. please pack a jacket if you plan on staying longer out there along santana row, westfield. we're going to see clouds move in by about 6:30. follow along with me as we walk you through this next system. it's going to be a little bit different. look at how it's spinning into the bay area, mostly impacting the south bay down into gilroy

with heavier pockets moving in by about tomorrow morning along the coastline. some heavier pockets around san jose, and even a chance if you see that pink there, the snow levels dropping. here it goes spinning a little bit more into sunday afternoon, but really, a fast-moving system and trace amounts of rain in the bay area. you can notice those heavier spots south of morgan hill and gilroy, about a quarter of an inch of rain or less if we're lucky. all of that rain very welcome, if you miss this update, i want to bring it to you now. drought monitor two weeks ago. follow along with me. we got rid of that exceptional extreme drought, that red color in the central valley. two weeks ago we were looking at a more severe drought. i'm going to take you into the update we got this week with thursday's drought monitor update. now that severe category has kind of split in two and almost

disappeared in the central valley. some areas along the eureka coastline down through big sur and into l.a. now abnormally dry and the bay area, of course, we are in that severe category. so inch by inch with that rain, we are making it out of the drought and that's very good news. look at how much more rain we have on the way possibly into next weekend, but be careful of the wind and the spotty chances of some thunderstorms and of course the frosty, frosty starts over the next couple of days. >> oh, i'm cold just looking at it.

welcome back, maybe you have plans this weekend to head to napa or sonoma for wine tasting. >> reporter: so young people aren't drinking wine. it's not just because of dry january and silver september. those are definitely catching on, but young people are just rejecting wine specifically. take a look at some of these headlines. the biggest threat to the wine industry, irrelevance with younger people. "the new york times," millennials are not drinking enough. the european based drinks business magazine blames the older generation for falling wine sales in france. what did the old people do wrong? they didn't teach the young people how to appreciate wine says the author. in fact, the only growth in wine

drinking is 60 and over. add to that the number of health studies coming out that says no amount of alcohol is safe. it's enough of a problem that silicon valley bank has issued a report to wine makers comparing their industry to, of all things, blockbuster video. the author warning for blockbuster the train was on the tracks. the lights were on. the horn was blaming, but the company never evolved or changed. and kira, the problems don't end there. all that rain we've gotten over the past few weeks could create a bumper crop of grapes, so you'll have lots and lots of grapes at a time silicon valley bank says people are less interested in wine. i'm scott mcgrew for "today in the bay." >> our 20 something producer is doing her part, she drinks wine. right now, coming up, calls for change across the country. after the release of that video in the death of tyre nichols at the hands of police, we have the reaction here in the bay area.

peek at your microclimate forecast, and a little cooler than we've seen the last few days. we had some lovely weather. >> it was so lovely, much needed drying out, and now the fog is back, so i want to give you a look at golden gate bridge, but if you are out there at that live shot we were showing you, be careful. any boaters out there this morning, and any commuters be careful as you drive over the golden gate bridge and any other bridge in the bay area, we have that dense fog advisory with us through 9:00 a.m. limited visibility not only in san francisco but the east bay shoreline, the north bay up there in novato down to about less than a mile of visibility there. it's even starting to creep into san jose as well. but once we get rid of this fog, we're going to be in store for a nice day. but we are saying good-bye to january. yeah, it's the 28th, tomorrow's the 29th. 30th on monday. we're saying good-bye with a lot of changes ahead in your full forecast. i'll walk you through all of them in just a little bit.

kira. thanks. by now you've likely seen the police video footage in the beating death of 29-year-old tyre nichols in memphis, tennessee. the memphis police department yesterday released body cam and street surveillance video showing the deadly beating by five black police officers. it has led to protests around the country and here locally. we're going to show you a portion of the video, and it is difficult to watch. >> i didn't do anything. [ bleep ]. >> all right, all right, all right. >> on the ground, on the ground. on the ground. >> all right. >> the first video shows the moment it all started on january 7th when police officers pulled tyre nichols from a car during a traffic stop. as officered forced him to the ground, he can be heard saying i didn't do anything, and i just want to go home. moments later as officers pull their tasers, you can see there nichols runs. minutes later a security camera shows the moments officers caught up to him roughly 100

yards from his mother's home. in that video, multiple officers can be seen beating him with batons, kicking him in the face and taking turns punching him for several minutes. it took more than 20 minutes after the beating ended before nichols was given any sort of medical attention. tyre nichols died three days later. all five officers seen on those videos have been fired, and now face multiple charges including second degree murder charges. in total, the memphis police released more than an hour of footage showing the attack from various angles and showing the officers standing around afterwards and appearing to coordinate their stories about what happened. nichols' mother spoke ahead of the video's release saying no mom should go through what she's been through. >> my heart just breaks. for a mother to know that their child was calling them in their

need, and i wasn't there for him, do you know how i feel right now? because i wasn't there for my son. >> the video released yesterday sparked protests across the nation from memphis to the bay area. most remaining peaceful, but last night in los angeles demonstrators and police clashed. you can see officers prepared in riot gear and what appears to be smoke coming from the back of that patrol car. again, most protests were peaceful, just as the nichols' family had requested. here in the bay area a group marched down san francisco's market street demanding a stop to what they're calling killer cops. the group also wants the five memphis police officers charged in nichols' death to be convicted. protesters convened at market and powell streets an hour after the video of the deadly encounter was released. many businesses in the city were boarded up in preparation for the protests.

givon washington, one of the organizers of last night's demonstration says he cannot bring himself to watch the video. he says knowing the details is hard enough. >> once they get inside their police car, started smoking and joking around while he's laying there calling for his -- calling for his mom. >> the now fired officers are all black. givon says that's even more of an indictment of the system that even black officers reproduce a culture of brutality. last night vice president kamala harris released a statement. it reads in part, quote, tyre nichols should have made it home to his family. yet, once again, american mourns the life of a son and father brutally cut short at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve. the footage and images released tonight will forever be seared in our memories, and they open wounds that will never fully

heal. back here locally, hundreds of people gathered last night for a vigil in half moon bay. it was the first of many city events meant to help the community process monday's mass shooting. here's "today in the bay's" stephanie magallon. >> we've been here every night since monday, and this is really the first time we see the entire community come out here for a vigil meant for healing. hundreds of people are here, all of them hoping to show their respect and support to the impacted families. candles lit up half moon bay's night sky. as a mourning community stood together in prayer and hope. >> part of my community, i consider them family members. >> as an immigrant, i feel so sad for those victims. they die so sadly, and so violently far away from their home, from their family. >> reporter: messages of solidarity for the seven men and women who are no longer here

with us, for the man healing in a hospital, and the community that's been working in the shadows for generations. >> it's been really hard. i have, you know, young kids who we've been trying to explain to them what happened and why and also assure them that they are, you know, are safe. >> we break down the walls that greed and racism have built. >> reporter: we heard from city leaders and victims' fams, they all believe this is the first step of a long journey of healing and necessary change. >> these people live where they live and work the jobs they worked because of these broken policies and false promises. >> there are so many things we need to do. we should understand each other no matter what your background is, your job, your like skin color, or your language ability. >> for this community, tonight was more than just a vigil. they say it was a night without borders. >> amen. >> stephanie magallon for "today in the bay."

>> asian farm workers in half moon bay got some much needed counseling. there were counselors from the national alliance on mental illness there yesterday to speak with the farm workers. one of them who asked not to be identified said she was traumatized by the shooting and also traumatized from years working on the farm. >> and she's afraid to go back to the farm, the living conditions and working conditions were terrible. they don't want to live there. they're afraid. they're scared. >> nami leaders say they've been working closely with asian community groups to get workers the resources they need. we have put together a page with information on how you can help the victims of this tragedy. there's also information on how to make a connection with a counselor if you're struggling and need someone to talk to. go to nbcbayarea.com/supporthmb. turning now to storm-related cleanup, it continues in the east bay where in contra costa county, officials are urging homeowners impacted by the

recent storms to fill out a property damage survey. those surveys could be key as the county tries to qualify for federal recovery funds. the forms are fairly straightforward asking for your contact information and the date your property was damaged during the storms. the form itself isn't an application for federal aid, but your information can be used to help a county qualify homeowners for aid to help address their property damage. once approved by the county, residents would then have to apply with fema to get money. the deadline to complete the property damage survey is january 31st coming up quickly. the county says the storm did more than $40 million in damage. a much more affordable bathroom thanks to a generous donation. the san francisco rec and parks department proposed a $1.7 million bathroom to be built in noe valley. that price tag prompted major

7:42 on this saturday. if you are getting ready to head out the door, we do have this dense fog advisory around the bay area until 9:00 a.m., some of that worst fog being reported in the north bay, and for any of you boaters out there, the delta is looking pretty foggy out there too. visibility about a quarter of a mile or less, so please be careful of that. keep the distance between the cars. let's take it out to the north bay. novato has some of that dense fog but also 39 degrees. we'll warm up to a mix of sun and clouds by this afternoon into the 50s, 55 by about 2:00 this afternoon. now, once we get through today, there are some changes ahead. this evening we'll start to see the return of that cloud cover. because we're seeing our next rain system. it's not an atmospheric river because of the way it's dropping from the pacific northwest into the bay area. let's take a closer look at the rain and the cold temperatures ahead. this rain system mostly going to be more of a hit around the south bay and southward, look at extending down into l.a. too and

bringing some fresh sierra snow up there in lake tahoe. it will be pretty fast moving, and then exit the bay area by about sunday night. so we're in the clear right after that. as this storm system drops into the bay area, we do have a wind advisory, so the yellow that you see here on the map is mostly for the north bay. so it includes santa rosa, calistoga, even on into fairfield. this will be with us until monday morning and those gusts could be anywhere up to 70 miles an hour or more on the mountain tops. now because we've had such big rain systems in the bay area, those tree damages are possible because they're so overly saturated with that water. please be careful of that, and of course careful on the roads. now, sierra not going to be a lot of snow, but a couple of inches, enough to make your travel down from tahoe on sunday night kind of treacherous. so be careful of that and keep an eye on the roads. now, snow, cold temperatures, that's what we're going to be looking at in the bay area. the cold temperatures, really the snow. we have a freeze watch in the

north bay, the east bay, and even down into the south bay and the peninsula. this will be tomorrow night on into monday. so behind this very unstable cold system, we have this freeze watch with us, temperatures ranging from the 20s, upper 20s into the 30s. so that's forecasted here right there on your seven-day forecast, windy, cold showers this weekend, and then possibly even more rain as we welcome the first weekend of february. >> all right, cinthia, thanks, it's 7:45 right now. coming up on "today in the bay," the 49ers are in philly and so are the fans ahead of tomorrow's nfc championship game. we'll take you there to see how everyone's getting ready.

welcome back. it's almost game time, and the 49ers and their fans are in philadelphia preparing for tomorrow's nfc championship game against the philadelphia eagles. "today in the bay's" anthony flores is there and takes us with him. >> reporter: hello from philadelphia, the 49ers have arrived in the city of brotherly love. 17 buses rolled into the hotel about 11:00 p.m. local time. we saw george kittle, deebo samuel, and christian mccaffrey all get off the bus as the 49ers are in town to take on the eagles in sunday's nfc championship game. now, not just the players arriving, but some of their family members. we saw joey bosa, the older brother of nick. he's also a superstar with the

anna dearmis. and another life well lived at 6:00 a.m. in the bay area. if you're not up, we've got you covered. just set the dvr and we will see you whenever you are ready for us. >> hopefully you are awake to watch willie tomorrow morning and stick right here for your local news right after on "today in the bay" at 7:00. here is a quick look at the top stories we're following this morning. by now you've likely seen the videos released in the beating death of 29-year-old tyre nichols in memphis. the video released yesterday sparked protests across the nation from memphis to the bay area. most remaining peaceful. here locally, a group marched down san francisco's market street demanding a stop to what they're calling killer cops. they also want the five memphis police officers charged in nichols' beating death to be convicted. givon washington, one of the organizers says he cannot bring himself to watch it.

he says knowing the details is hard enough. >> once they got inside of their police car, started smoking and joking around while he's laying there calling for his -- calling for his mom. >> the now fired officers are all black. they're charged with second degree murder, two counts of official misconduct, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of official oppression, and one count of aggravated assault. and back here locally, another tragedy being remembered. hundreds of people gathering last night in half moon bay to remember the victims of monday's mass shooting. candles and flowers surrounding community members standing together in prayer and in hope. several speakers shared messages of solidarity for those seven men and women who lost their lives, and for the surviving victims still healing in the hospital, swems the community that's been working in the the shadows for far too long.
