and if you have questions, there's free assistance every step of the way. covered california, this way to health insurance. enrollment ends january 31st. go to coveredca.com. good morning. it is sunday, january 29th. a live look outside at a breathtaking san francisco skyline. it almost doesn't even look real, as we welcome in this championship sunday. thank you so much for starting the morning with us. i'm keira klapper. we're joined now with a look at the forecast. you know what? my automatic windshield wipers turned on as i pulled into san jose earlier this morning. >> mine say they're automatic, but sometimes i'm like, come on,
7:01 am
get to it. did you notice from that san francisco camera, it's a little less cloudy than here in san jose, and the temperatures, currently 48 in san jose and mid to upper forts in the south bay, just below freezing in santa rosa. 37 in napa. so notice the temperature change from about 24 hours ago. that cloud cover is helping to boost these temperatures up, as well as the incoming wind. anywhere from 4 to 10 degrees warmer in the inland valleys. yes, we are tracking light rain into the bay area, and mainly impacting parts of northern california up there. now, we have a lot to talk about coming up in the full forecast. not only the rain, but the chilly, cold week that is the first week of member. back to you. >> thank you. two years ago, an 84-year-old was violently shoved
7:02 am
to the ground while out on a walk in san francisco. those injuries later killed him. last night, family, friends and activists gathered to remember the man affectionally known as grandpa vicha and they are calling for change. >> reporter: dozens gathered in san francisco's chinatown, many mourning the violence that's happened, as well as celebrating the community they have put together. people of all ages came to remember the man pictured in this mural, grandpa vicha as he was known. two years ago, he was out on a walk when she was pushed and knocked to the ground. he died two days later. his daughter says this gathering is not just to grieve her father, but all the victims of anti-asian violence. >> as you have seen in the news every day now, violence against asians has not stopped.
7:03 am
>> reporter: this comes at a time when violence against asian americans has been on the rise. vicha's death and the pain his family is going through is all too familiar for many others. sasanna's grandmother was attacked in 2019 in san francisco and later died of her injuries. >> to see what's been happening to our community -- >> reporter: while speakers here grappled with their own trauma, many are celebrating the lunar new year. >> we are here to celebrate the new year. >> reporter: but that's what vicha's family and the community are trying to do -- hold the mourning and celebrating side by side, writing down hopes for a better future and sending them off in a lantern. >> we hope in the new year for
7:04 am
everyone to be safe and then stay strong, healing together. >> reporter: alyssa gourd, today in the bay. >> a few months ago, we sat down with grandpa vicha's daughter. you can watch the full story on nbcbayarea.com. happening today, people in the bay area will rally once again, following the death of tyre nichols in memphis and the release of the video that shows the five officers beating him. the third baptist church will hold a rally in honor of nichols beginning at 3:00 p.m. and in oakland, people are invited to gather for the solidarity from the bay to tennessee rally and march. it's put on by the anti-police terror project. the group will stand in solidarity with the family and
7:05 am
demand an end to the police doing traffic enforcement in every u.s. city starting at 5:00 p.m. there is more fallout from that police killing in memphis. the chief announcing she's disbanding the scorpion unit, which is composed of three teams of 30 officers, whose stated aim is to target violent offenders. that comes after the video was released, showing five of that scorpion unit officers beating 29-year-old nichols. he, as you likely know by now, died three das later in the hospital. he was stopped on the evening of january 7th not far from his home. the video shows him being pulled out of the car. he does end up running from police and later shown being kicked, beaten with batons and pepper sprayed. all five officers have since been fired and charged with second degree murder and other crimes. the killing is sparking outrage
7:06 am
across the country. bay area civil rights attorney john burwin said it's a step in the right direction to disband the scorpion unit. >> it looked like the members of that unit, at least the five men we know so far, those officers were out of control. that would suggest to me they had no real supervision, and that there is no supervision, but if they had, they would have known if you had your cameras on, you will be held accountable for it. but they did not believe that would be the case. >> burris is hopeful that as a result of the outcry, there will be national police reform legislation. in recent years, some states have moved forward, but there is nothing on the federal level to address police brutality. investigators are trying to figure out why a tesla burst into flames on the side of a northern california freeway near
7:07 am
sacramento. the fire department tweeted this video. you can see on the right side of the screen, the tesla is on fire. firefighters say the driver was on highway 50 near rancho cordova, when smoke started coming out of the front. the driver pulls over and things got worse. here are photos of the aftermath. firefighters say there was no damage to the tesla before it caught fire. they used about 6,000 gallons of water to put out that fire. in the east bay, there is a crackdown on sideshows in multiple cities. the oakland police department is warning that it's beefing up patrols for enforcement of illegal sideshow activities. this is video of recent sideshows from the east bay. did you know that taking part in a sideshow could end in arrest? and your car being seized for 30 days? police also tweeted, saying they are partnering with brentwood officers.
7:08 am
the antioch police department is taking a zero tolerance approach. championship sunday is upon us. the niners are getting warmed up for a huge matchup, taking on the philadelphia eagles in the nfc championship game. today in the bay's anthony flores joins us live from lincoln financial field in philadelphia. anthony, good morning to you. kickoff is what, four hours and 52 minutes away, but who's counting? >> reporter: good morning from the city of brotherly love. if you're wondering why this place is empty, this is the media parking lot. behind the camera, it is packed with fans tailgating and some 49ers fans, we'll find them coming up later. but this place is fired up for football. today, the 49ers are hoping to beat the eagles and punch their ticket to the super bowl. the 49ers are in the nfc championship game for the second
7:09 am
year in a row. the red and gold have been winners of 12 in a row. the eagles have been the class of the nfc, with a defense ranked second in the league. the fans will give the eagles a big homefield advantage. they're loud and rowdy. last year, the niners came up short in the nfc championship. so this time around, they want to make the most of this special opportunity. >> there's a lot on the line. all of our goals and dreams of everything are in front of us. so we want to do everything you can to accomplish that. >> this is what you dreamt about since you were a kid. whether it's a hunger, starvation, desperation, you do everything you can that you are going to win it. >> reporter: all right. kickoff, noon back in the bay area. we are less than five hours away. i have to tell you, it is cold here.
7:10 am
so when you are dealing with cold weather, the game is crucial. but look at the color of this scarf. it's green and black, the color of the eagles. i can't wear this. can i borrow your scarf? perfect. blue, and it matches my sweater. back to you in the studio. i think this will keep my warm. >> looking good, anthony. see you again in about 20 minutes. thanks so much. it's 7:10. coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with chuck todd, who has a preview of thiweek's "ms ee business can happen anytime, anywhere. so help yours thrive and stay connected with the comcast business complete connectivity solution.

7:12 am
welcome back. please join me in welcoming moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd. thank you for joining us this morning. i do have some heavy questions for you. last sunday morning, when we
7:13 am
last spoke, americans were waking up to the news of another mass shooting in monterey park, california. in the week since we talked, there have been 16 mass shootings in america. out of the 16, four of them were here in california. two here in the bay area. i'm curious, as we grow weary and frankly exasperated about hearing about so much gun violence, is there any idea of where meshes stand on gun control or gun reform? and ultimately, who has the power to even make that happen? >> so it's interesting. that grim statistic that you talked about, i took it a step further today in the show. there have been more mass shootings than days of the year so far. we have had 29 days this calendar year. i think the number is 44 mass shootings in the database.
7:14 am
four straight calendar years now, where we have had more mass shootings than days of the year. so you asked, where does the power lie? i think this is where there is an open question. could congress do more? they could. are they so politically polarized they won't? yes. so then you end up in the judiciary, and the judiciary has created limits and has tied the hands of many legislatures across the country from doing more. and ultimately, you have to have a -- you're going to have to have federal intervention here. i've showed some polling data. there is a majority that want stricter gun laws, but it's not a supermajority. it sits in the mid to high 50s. the way our politics works, unless something is hitting the 70s, you're not getting people in both parties. you have something that's about 55% of the public, that means you have one party plus the independents, and it's not
7:15 am
enough to move the other party. in this case, that other party is the republicans. so it is -- i think we're in this stalemate for -- i think we all think at some point one of these incidents is going to be the tipping point. first graders wasn't the tipping point, parkland wasn't the tipping point, a 72-year-old committing a mass shooting at a ballroom dance hall is not a tipping point, a church, i could go on and on. so i don't know when we will get there. >> it does go on and on, and it's heartbreaking to hear you just list all of those places. i did want to get to the tyre nichols video. i know we don't have time to talk about that this morning. but i know you will have some important discussions today. and we thank you forgiving us a preview. we look forward to seeing you in about 45 minutes. >> you got it. >> we do hope you join chuck this morning. we'll have all exclusive issues
7:16 am
with representative jim jordan, chair of the house judiciary committee, who could hold the power to make change. and former secretary of defense robert gates. "meet the press" is right after this news cast. if you watch every sunday, you know in about 30 minutes, we'll talk to our own political analyst for our weekly segment where we will look at gun violence in the first days of 2023. the man accused of intentionally driving his family off a cliff has been moved from the hospital to the jail. earlier this month, police found a family in their tesla at the bottom of a cliff off highway 1. everyone in the car survived, but they were badly injured. the driver is a doctor from pasadena. police say he purposely drove the car off the cliff. he was with his two young children and his wife.
7:17 am
to be fo doctors released him yesterday and he was booked into jail where he faces charges of attempted murder. former president donald trump returned to the campaign trail. he said he's nor angry and more committed more than ever before while speaking in salem, new hampshire. he also took aim at joe biden and said the country needs a "president who can take on the whole system and a president who can win." the former president brushed aside criticism that his campaign lost momentum since announcing in november that he would run for the white house in 2024. warrior star steph curry and his wife are weighing in on the affordable housing debate where they live in atherton. they are asking the city not to move forward with a project of a dozen three story town homes next to their property. this as the town tries to figure
7:18 am
out ways to comply with a state deadline to build more housing in an area that needs it. their letter to the city reads in part -- if you are looking into going out this sunday, we have a list in this weekend's calendar. >> good morning, kira. i'm a little emotional as i sadly tell you of the study of fungi and the fungus fair, a celebration of wild mushrooms. today in pleasant hill, they'll have presentations with an identification table.
7:19 am
bring your specimens to find out what you may have found on your own. and what we have found is something that's been missing for years, the lunar new year parade is back for the year of the rabbit. the lunar new year is celebrated by 2 million people in the united states and throughout the world. so i guess that's enough to sustain at least another parade. and millbrae celebrating with over 50 local businesses giving what they call the most cultured fuse experience and martial arts, celebrating with powerful and fluid movement. remember, i also will monitor your traffic and the powerful and fluid or not weekday mornings right here on "today in the bay." when it comes to 49ers fans, one guy may have them beat. he's the team's fan of the year.
7:20 am
for starters, he says other fans call him the eye of the niner. and toe 'tis his right eye is glass. it's a niners logo. ray pena lost his eye a decade ago, and this season, the team nominated him for fan of the year. he's now one of 32 fans up for nfl fan of the year. the winner receives a trip to the super bowl. >> i have a lot of good 49er fan face behind my back. i'm hoping that i will take the trophy back to the bay. >> we hope so, too. vote for pena on the nfl seb wit. just search fan of the year. he will be rooting for the niners today. it's time to check in for a look at our forecast. i saw a little bit of sprinkles on the way in this morning. but how will the watch party be? >> it will be great.
7:21 am
let's start the full forecast right now with the 49ers forecast, if you were lucky enough to travel to philly. cloudy, 53 degrees out there. kickoff is at 12:00. yeah, let's get pumped for that. i don't see anything in the way of the players or anybody out there. just make sure that you have a lot of coats on, because philly can get cold. in the bay area, we are awaiting showers that will drop the snow levels because it is a cold storm system moving in. it will be followed by a wind advisory for the north bay, lasting into tomorrow. we do have the freeze warning that starts today and tomorrow. let's get you ready for this sunday around the bay area. 10:00 before kickoff, let's look at where the showers are. spotty showers around the bay area, but mostly cloud cover. possibly even some hail with this little bull's-eye right here that you see on gilroy, as well. because so much instability in the atmosphere.
7:22 am
we see some spotty rain here, continuing in san jose and south. so that's where the bulk of this activity will be. it's fast moving, cold, and it's out of here by the evening hours. that's what we have in store as far as the showers go. look at that pink and purple on your screen. that's where the snow levels will be dropping since this is a very cold storm system. wind advisory for the north bay. napa county on over, very gusty winds continuing later tonight on into monday morning. we could see this from all of our storms over the last couple of weeks. please be careful with that. mixed together with the cold temperatures, we have this windchill factor. so that will make temperatures really cold. notice that by 8:00 tonight, we're already in the 30s and 40s, waking up at 4:00 a.m. 31 in fremont. and look, we have some upper 20s
7:23 am
out in livermore and in dublin. so please be careful with that. risk for hypothermia starts to level up because of this effect. so i want you to please be careful over the next couple of hours with yourself, your pets and children as you get them ready for the week ahead. seven-day forecast, windy, cold, and we have, yes, more rain on the way. it's february, so we are going to keep knocking on that storm door. >> we hope it opens. it is 7:23. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, we're talking to figure skating royally. christy yam

know sis walking into the s.a.p. center for the u.s. figure skating championships, it's just as much a figure skating convention as it is a competition. a place where lovers of the sport gather, whether fans or former champions. 1992 gold medalist and fremont native christy yamaguchi wouldn't miss it for the world. >> i'm so thrilled to see the best in our country in our backyard. >> reporter: for bay area native karen chen, this is her first time in a decade at the nationals not as a competitor. >> earlier this week, i was helping out the nationals development catch, so i helped them with spins and such a full circle moment. >> reporter: for those who did take the ice, there were highs, lows, and everything in between. alexy skating with brandan, won her fifth national title in what may be her final season as a skater.
7:27 am
for mark, who grew up in west oakland, it was a finish farther down the leader board in 8th place. but the experience of skating on one of the sport's biggest stages so close to home is one he never wants to forget. >> i took a second in the arena and i was just like, wow, like it's such a privilege to be able to skate here. >> reporter: the other big winners winning their fourth ice dance national championship. the competition continues the championship men's free skate in the morning, and the skating spectacular exhibition in the evening. garvin thomas, "today in the bay." >> the figure skating championships continue today. watch our live coverage at the men's free skate starting at noon right here on nbc bay area. we're also streaming live on peacock. i'm anthony flores, live in philadelphia. less than five hours away from the nfc championship. everyone is fired up and ready for some football.

conversation starter once you're out there at the watch parties. 37 degrees in san rafael. and although we are in the 30s, we are warmer in some spots, 5 to 10 degrees because of this incoming system. it's already starting to spin out there in the pacific and to the north of us. showers off to the coast here in the bay area, as well. we have a lot to cover in the whole forecast coming up. not only the rain, but the dang rousely cold temperatures ahead. yesterday marked two years since 84-year-old vicha was shoved to the ground while out on a walk. he died two days later. the death of grand pa vicha, as he was loafingly known, sparked the stop asian violence.
7:32 am
there was a mural created in his honor, and they lit lanterns with hopes for a brighter future. his daughter said they can't stop fighting for their community's safety. >> as you have seen in the news every day now, violence against asians has not stopped. >> people at the fathering hope that sharing these stories accelerates efforts to improve safety and stop future attacks. a few months ago, our reporter sat down with vicha's daughter. watch that entire story right now on nbcbayarea.com. change in the wake of the savage beating death of tyre nichols in memphis. this sparked protests across the country and led to one major change announced by the memphis police department. nbc's priscilla thompson reports from memphis. >> reporter: from atlanta to boston -- new york to memphis --
7:33 am
demonstrators took to the streets to protest the beating death of tyre nichols. marches followed friday night nationwide after the video was released. including in memphis, where officers remained at a distance. demonstrators brought traffic to a stand still for hours, as they demand action and accountability. the coast-to-coast protests overwhelmingly peaceful. why do you think things remain so calm in this case? >> i think they remain calm because there are three factors at play. that has all combined to result in these protests being peaceful. >> reporter: it was less than three weeks after the january 7
7:34 am
traffic stop turned deadly that the five now former memphis police officers were charged with second degree murder, before the video was released publicly. >> having the public view the video knowing that there already have been charges filed, and that there will be accountability, i think that undermines any suspicion that the fix is in. >> reporter: and new fallout from law enforcement. the shelby county sheriff announcing two deputies have been relieved of duty, pemdzing an internal investigation based on their actions when they arrived to the scene. memphis police announced it will deactivate the scorpion unit, the part of the police force all five officers belonged to. the unit was formed in 2021 to fight violent street crime. >> that was priscilla thompson reporting for us. people in the bay area are invited to gather in the wake of

7:43 am
this hour. look at how it has moved out of the bay area. lingering showers, and most of the activity to the south and to the east of the bay area. not going to be a major drought buster. we have the wind advisory that goes into effect, lasting through 1:00 tomorrow. really look at 3:00 starting to pick up almost 45 miles an hour here. about 40-mile-an-hour winds over in napa. 7:00 p.m., all of this is picking up in the north bay down into san francisco, as well. so please be careful, secure any objects that you want to keep safe out there this afternoon, and the winds will continue to howl on monday, wrapping up january. so winds, cold temperatures, because of this cold air that's moving into the bay area.

so it's coming to us from parts of canada, even as far north as the arctic circle. so be careful. we have this freeze warning that goes into effect later into monday morning. notice the colors there, starting to turn into that blue and purple. so freeze warnings for the interior parts of the north bay, east bay and down here in san jose, as well. while the coastline has that frost advisory. be careful of the pets and plants, and be careful here, dress in layers. seven-day forecast, once we get through the wind and cold monday, tuesday, we are headed for more rain over the next couple of days. so please, welcome any of that rain carefully. as we switch to todd's climate in crisis, some of you might brave the cold temperatures and find yourself out along the bay area beaches and encounter bottle nosed dolphins.
7:45 am
they typically hang around baja, california. so what is driving them up to our coastline? i spoke with bill keener for more details. >> part of it has to do with climate change, because as the water warms up, they're used to warmer water in southern california. so they can get that warmer weather in monterey bay and more recently in san francisco bay and even sonoma county. and even farther north, sometimes they will make it to mendocino, and we have had some as far north in california as humboldt. so they are here to stay. they have learned to find food and navigate the area. so they're here permanently, as far as we can tell now. >> unfortunately, not all animals do well with climate change and adapting to new environments. but dolphins are very smart and have been able to find different food sources like salmon,
7:46 am
something they can't get off of the san diego or baja, california coastline. and they are here to stay. however, the marine mammal center needs our help. they are asking the public to take a picture of these dolphin it is you see them. even if you just snap a quick picture, scientists may be able to match it to something in their catalog. we have a link at nbcbayarea.com. >> that's a fun project. got to go out and photograph dolphins. cynthia, thank you. it's 7:46. much more ahead. coming up, our political analyst is here to talk about recent gun violence plaguing our nation. and whether it uld spark and whether it uld spark cole

7:50 am
gun-related laws, so why does this continue to happen? nbc bay area political analyst larry gursten joins us now. how do we explain what appears to be a disconnect? we have the most legislation, we have the most rules on what are legal and not. but, again, you can just cross over to nevada and go to a gun show there. what's happening? >> and 7 out of those 49 right here in california. the leading state, more than any other state, by a lot. it's all a big puzzle in a sense, but there's some understanding that it comes out of the data. first of all, the gifford's law center in arizona, to prevent gun violence, ranks california first, first, with new jersey in gun control laws. according to the cdc, california ranks 7th in the fewest gun caused deaths per capita. so the state really, you oil it

like. and it only covers 80%. one out of five guns is purchased by any control whatsoever. should there be universal background checks? there's widespread, national support for this whole thing. data, data showing more than 80% of the public wants to see strong background checks. 80%. almost 88% if you put together strong and somewhat. but we don't get anything from congress. they can't get their act together on something so simple as universal background checks. >> here we sit talking about it again and again and again. they will be covering it on eet the"m
