>> it does not. somebody has a pep in her step. >> you were at the game. you saw it in person. how amazing was it? >> it was so fun. mike is a philly native. an eagles fan. and our two little kids. and for the first time we got to see them, we're from philly, people don't like us and we don't care. that's the big thing in philly. >> i love that. >> we had a good fun. more on the super bowl that's set. we want to begin with the news and in memphis where there is a lot to catch you up on over the weekend. police released the videos in the tyre nichols' case. >> overnight we learned a court date has been set for the now five fired officers, all charged with murder. that news coming as the special s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. police unit that they were all part of has been completely disbanded. >> in the meantime, there were more protests overwhelmingly peaceful demonstrations across the country, calling for police reform in departments nationwide. the latest now we will get right to priscilla thompson on the ground in memphis. priscilla, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning. it has been a long and painful weekend here in memphis as demonstrators take to the streets to demand change. and the memphis police department listening announcing they will disband the controversial s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit almost immediately after the horrific video was released, and a warning, the images you're about to see is disturbing. this morning, a nation outraged, peaceful demonstrations across the country, from atlanta to oakland. saint paul and memphis. >> i saw the video. it broke my heart. >> reporter: demonstrators here brought traffic to a standstill on interstate 55 for hours and they're continuing to march into the night, demanding action and accountability. the memphis police department s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit tasked with targeting violent crime since 2021, shut down amid the outcry. after five officers from the unit were seen brutally beating 29-year-old tyre nichols during

a traffic stop earlier this month. silent surveillance video appears to show an officer holding nichols up as others punch him in the face repeatedly. nichols' final words on the tape, gut wrenching cries for his mom as the officers pepper sprayed and kick him. >> mom! >> reporter: all five officers fired and now charged with second-degree murder. two shelby county sheriff's deputies and fire department personnel are also under investigation for their actions. >> so nothing we did yesterday precludes an addition of later charges at a later time, including charges of other people. >> reporter: tyre nichols' parents are planning the funeral on wednesday for their 29-year-old son and young father who they say loved to skateboard and watch sunsets. >> what do you hope people remember about tyre? >> that my son was a beautiful soul. that's how i want him to be

remembered. >> reporter: in pulpits across memphis this weekend, prayers for the family. in a community desperate for healing. >> the thing about healing is that even when a wound is healed there's still a scar. and the scar remains forever. >> there's also a controversy about the initial police release and what was actually seen in the body cam footage. can you fill us in? >> reporter: that's right, and the nirnl initial report described this as a confrontation that occurred during the traffic stop as it began but what we saw in the video is police approached nichols' car with guns drawn and an officer opened the drivers side door and then came out of the car and the police chief said there's no justification so far for the traffic stop. and there's also concern about

this description in the report that tyre complained of shortness of breath, when we saw on the video is that after the beating, police officers held him up against a car and he slumped over several times. it is unclear if he would have even been able to say that he was having shortness of breath. he was clearly in disstress. and now lawmakers and people across the country are calling for more on police reform. something that will likely come up at next week's state of the union. where tyre nichols' parents are expected to be among those in attendance. savannah? >> so many questions there, priscilla, thank you very much. now to a high stakes visit to the middle east by secretary of state antony blinken, after a stop in cairo he is touching down in jerusalem this morning where tension is high amid an eruption of violence. nbc's kelly cobiella joins us. from jerusalem. hey, kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda.

secretary blinken sitting down with benjamin netanyahu for the first time since netanyahu returned to office, at a time when israel is on the highest alert level, elevated after a deadliest attack on israelis in more than a decade. israeli forces blanketing jerusalem after palestinian gunmen opened fire on worshippers after they left a synagogue. israeli officials say 10 were shot, seven killed including a 14-year-old boy. the gunman shot dead by police. hours later saturday morning, israeli officials say a 13-year-old palestinian boy shot an israeli father and son in a palestinian neighborhood in east jerusalem. this video showing the moments an israeli military officer on leave fired back shooting the boy who is now recovering in a hospital. secretary of state blinken speaking out this morning after arriving in israel.

>> we condemn it in the strongest terms. it is the responsibility of everybody to calm tensions rather than increase them. >> reporter: prime minister netanyahu promising strong and swift response ordering officers to seal off one attacker's home. saying the man terrorized the women and children and threw them out of the house. all of it coming after this deadly israeli commando raid in the occupied west bank left nine dead. seven of them militants according to israeli officials why the tenth died of his injuries sunday. they say most are members of islamic jihad planning an imminent attack. funerals drawing emotional crowds on both sides. the spate of violence the first test for netanyahu's new government, widely considered the most far right in the country's history, vowing to take a hard line against all palestinians and expand settlements in occupied

territories. >> the u.s. administrations on the wrong side of history and democracy. >> reporter: secretary blinken expected to bring up iran. over the weekend there was a drone attack on an iranian military facility. the video not independently verified by nbc news. iranian officials blamed the u.s. and israel. defense officials refuse to comment. hoda? >> kelly cobiella in jerusalem, thank you you. the first presidential primary is more than a year ago but the presidential race picking up steam, former president trump hitting the trail in two key early voting states over the weekend, went after president biden and a growing list of potential republican candidates. nbc senior washington correspondent hallie jackson has the details. good morning. >> good morning to you. some ten weeks after he announced he would run for the white house again, the former president is out hitting the campaign trail. so far the only official

candidate in the gop primary but already taking aim at potential challengers. like florida republican governor ron desantis. declaring him disloyal. >> reporter: former president trump back home this morning after the first big campaign swing to new hampshire and south carolina, dismissing critics who say his 2024 push is off to a slow and sputtering start. >> they said he's not doing rallies. he's not campaigning, maybe he's lost his step, i'm more angry now and i'm more committed now than i ever was. >> reporter: mr. trump again pushing election fraud lies and on the plane after the rallies pushing a you in attack against republican florida governor ron desantis, a potential 2024 challenger. >> i got him elected. ron would have not been governor if it was not for me. when i hear he might run, i consider that very disloyal. >> reporter: that's after a new poll in new hampshire, released just before mr. trump's visit, shows desantis with a 12-point lead over the former president.

the governor hasn't formally announced anything yet, but he's widely speculated to be planning a presidential run. with advisers actively preparing, according to the "washington post," citing two republicans with knowledge of the conversation. nbc news has not confirmed that reporting. some republicans arguing the party needs someone other than mr. trump at the top of the ticket, pointing to the underwhelming midterms and the support of a controversial target who failed to win. >> loser, loser, loser, loser and i think republicans recognize that. >> reporter: still mr. trump remains the front-runner leading the crowd of potential front-runners, not just desantis, but former vice president mike pence, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley and former secretary of state mike pompeo. trump loyalists are behind him.

>> there are many talented people for years to come, but there is only one donald trump. >> it all comes as a new nbc news poll sheds light on where americans stand on former president trump and president biden's classified documents issues. what you can tell us about that? >> an equal number of people, 57%, say they are as concerned about the materials found in president biden's home and president trump's home even with the key differences between the two cases. president biden attorneys saying they turned over the documents as soon as they were found opposed to former president trump who failed to fully comply with the subpoena. >> thank you very much. students returning to an elementary school in virginia this morning, for the first time since a 6-year-old shot and wounded his teacher in the first grade classroom. the community still grappling with the fallout. nbc's catie beck is in newport news for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. these kids have not seen the inside of a classroom for the past three weeks. they're going to return today to see a huge police presence and

new security measures right at the front door. many parents are feeling anxious about a return to school. this morning, it's back to school for the students of richneck elementary where police say a 6-year-old intentionally shot his teacher, 25-year-old abigail zwerner inside a classroom earlier this month. the elementary school as well as all schools in the district will now use metal detecters and provide clear backpacks for students as the investigation into the shooting continues, zwerner's attorney is preparing to file a lawsuit against the school district saying the administration failed to act, despite multiple warnings of imminent danger. >> three times school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him in school and threatened people but the administration could not be bothered. >> reporter: the school district has declined to comment, citing

the ongoing investigation. a source close to the situation also revealing about an hour before she watt shot, zwerner texted a loved one and showed her frustration over the school's lack of response. the source noting, quote, she was frustrated because she was trying to get help with this child, for this child, and then she needed help, no one was coming. nbc news has not seen the text message. meanwhile, staff shakeups continue, with the school board firing the superintendent, and new leadership at the elementary school, according to a district spokesperson. a spokesperson for the school district that the assistant principal is still employed by the school district. the troubling incident spotlighting the fears of many parents, as they send their kids off to school. maria navrette has two young kids at richneck elementary. >> i don't think anything they've done has lessened my worries about them returning to

"fantasy island" and "as the world turns." let's talk about the winter weather or should we say the lack of winter weather on the east coast. >> in major cities like here in new york, philadelphia, washington, d.c., they have yet to have any measurable snow this season and the trend is starting to impact businesses that rely on the cold and the snow. >> and nbc's stephanie gosk is at central park looking into it for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the last time central park went this far into the winter season without measurable snow, i was in diapers and not walking yet now, that record is going to be broken on february 4th and if the weather forecast has any suggestion, and if it is true, then that's exactly what is going to happen this january, on the east coast, in parts of the midwest -- >> it is so warm lately. >> reporter: -- an historic winter that feels anything like it at times. with mild temperatures and record low snowfall. >> exactly, our current snow depth is looking pretty wimpy especially compared to areas in the northwest.

>> reporter: in new york, it's been 50 years since the city waited this long for the first measurable snowfall of the season and it's not just with snow that is lacking in washington, d.c., january is running nearly 8 degrees warmer than average the third warmest on record. it's all leaving snow lovers disappointed wondering whether they will get to enjoy any this year. >> disappointed. there's not enough snow to make a snow angel >> reporter: it is creating a tough season for winter businesses like salt and snowplow companies >> a lack of snow for a long> tiremere it's a serious concern for the industry. >> reporter: for ice castles, a company that creates fun winter wonderlands, the opening days have been delayed to february for two locations in wisconsin and new york >> we hope it will be colder next year. >> reporter: and while ski resorts can create their own snow, it still requires some cooperation from mother nature >> any time we can get cold temperatures and some natural snow, that is music to my ears without that, we have to push it a little bit more into overdrive. >> reporter: at vail's three

resorts in laurel mountains in pennsylvania about 60% of the trails are open, during what is likely the warmest january in the pittsburgh area since 2006, averaging 29 degrees. vermont is open to 50 ski resorts. >> we're in good shape right now but we are really beholden to the weather to some degree >> reporter: which ski vermont president says has a slow season >> the ski area employs 13,000 people in the peak winter season and we have a number of other businesses like retail shops and restaurants and hotels and lodges and grocery stores, and convenience stores, gas stations, that really rely on that skier traffic. >> reporter: the cold weather that al is talking about is going to make its way across the country which is good news for some of the businesses but a lot of them are looking down the road and thinking they're going to have to restructure how they do business, if it stays warm like this, guys. >> stephanie, thank you. and let's get al in on this. >> on the upside, there are a lot of highway supervisors who are very excited because this is

not impacting their budget they add in a lot of costs for snow removal here in new york city, for every inch of snow, it's about $1.5 million to remove that snow. so you're saving a lot of money right now. and in fact, the new record comes, we're hitting it right now, 326 days since the last measurable snowfall. we go to philadelphia, approaching the latest first snowfall, it will be the day after groundhog day, the average snowfall 19.3 inches, that's not happening. washington, d.c., averaging about 13 inches of snow. zip so far and that is 381 days since their latest measurable snow average is 120 information of s snow, and they're three feet in the country, syracuse, average is 120 inches of snow, and they're three feet behind the average. why is this? basically we're talking about this lack of cold, unfavorable nina, and because of climate, we're seeing winter warming up, and more extreme swings in

weather. so this is going to be a real pattern we see february outlook is in and the eastern third of the country, warmer than average i saw some fists raised over there. >> we like warm weather. >> okay, there you go. >> sorry. >> colder than average up through the plains and the pacific northwest. precipitation-wise, wetter than average around the great lakes and the ohio and upper mississippi river valley and drier than average along the gulf and into the southwese sou. we know where all the snow is, it's out west. we've seen a lot of that this winter. and now we have a chance to enjoy it as we are looking at colder temperatures here in the bay area, low 50s for today. it will be near freezing again tonight and the next several nights. but then we see our high temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. more bay area rain expected for friday and then again on sunday, and for san francisco we'll see

less than 24 hours after that video was released, the memphis police department announced that they were permanently deactivating their s.c.o.r.p.i.o.n. unit, that was the unit tasked with tackling violent crime here in the city, the department said that they heard the cries of the community, and of the family of tyre nichols, and decided to make that change and of course, those cries were being heard across the country, as people poured into the streets to demand justice and accountability in the death of tyre nichols, after seeing that horrific video of the five police officers beating, kicking, punching, and tasing tyre nichols for several minutes. all five of those former police officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder they're expected in court for the first time next month. a defense attorney for two of the officers tell us their clients plan to plead not guilty savannah >> all right priscilla, thank you very much. the u.s. surgeon general is warning that 13 is too young for children to become regulars on

lot of folks, something salty, something sweet from time to time in the pantry when does it become a problem? >> it is kind of tricky to talk about food addiction and it may not come as a surprise to you guys but there is a debate in the scientific community about whether or not food can actually be addictive there's critics who contend that while certain behaviors that can parallel, you know, things like cravings that can actually look like addictions, you can't really fully abstain from food, it doesn't actually have a formal diagnosis like binge eating does, for example, but others would argue that certain behaviors and physiological effects do actually qualify as addiction, and so yes -- >> what does the study find? >> so right, this is a study that actually surveyed 2,000 adults between the ages of 50 and 80 and asked them a bunch of symptoms on an 11-point scale, and if they had 2 out of the 1 it qualified as addictive behavior, and here were the three most common. about 24% of respondents basically said that they had cravings at least once per week, they tried to cut down on their
