"early today" starts right now >> good morning. i'm phillip mena >> i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news in florida, where ten people were injured in a dive-by shooting in lakeland four suspects in a dark blue nissan sedan opened fire through all four windows, shooting people on both sides of the street it was likely a targeted attack. all the victims are men between 20 and 35 years old. two of the injured are in critical condition one shot in the stomach and the

other in the face. there is no kurt current danger the public and it is under investigation. memorials are growing in tennessee as the shocking video of tyre nichols being beaten by police continues to zisend shockwaves across the nation priscilla thompson is following the latest, and a warning that the video may be disturbing. >> reporter: robert long and ja michael sandrich an investigation found thiey violated numerous protocols and policies the investigation into the beating death continues. hemphill was relieved of duty alongside the now-fired five

officers shortly after the traffic stop according to the department they say information about the disciplinary action was not immediately released because the investigation is still ongoing hemphill can be seen on his body cam helping pin nichols down until he fled on foot. he nichols died three days later an attorney for hemphill says his client was never present at the second scene and is cooperating with the investigation. >> we think he should be terminated like the other five black officers that were terminated >> reporter: attorneys for the family calling it disappointing saying it begs the question why the white officer involved in the brutal attack was shielded and protected from the public eye and from sufficient discipline and accountability. the memphis police department announced it would permanently deactivate the scorpion unit

that the five now-charged ex-officers belonged to. >> it can sometimes breed a culture of overaggressiveness. >> reporter: officials declined to say whether hemphill was a member of the unit created over a year ago to address violent crime. all of this has led to calls for police reform. causing lawmakers to consider restarting negotiations. legislation would face an uphill battle in the republican-controlled house where some leaders are already expressing doubt >> i don't know that any law, any training, any reform is going to change, you know, that this man was handcuffed and they continued to beat him. >> reporter: lawmakers still dive identified on the path

forward. police in oregon are sounding the alarm about a man who allegedly tortured and kidnapped a woman. he may be using dating apps to find more women. >> reporter: police are on an all-out manhunt for an organize suspect accused of torturing a woman he held capture. benjamin obadiah foster is believed to be armed and dangerous. they released these images they say show him on the run. they believe the 36-year-old may now be online looking for new victims. >> the suspect, benjamin foster had been accessing social media sites for the dating applications and we fear that he may be targeting women in the area, either to lure them into helping his escape or into possibly being an additional victim

>> reporter: he's been on the run since last week after police found a woman unconscious and bound at a home in grant's pass, oregon she was taken to the hospital in critical condition on thursday night, police raided foster's home, but he managed to escape allegedly aided by a 68-year-old woman who was arrested for hindering prosecution, according to police. >> ben foster is from the southern oregon area, so he has a lot of friends, a lot of contacts within this area. so he, it's possible that he could be getting assistance and remaining around the area. >> reporter: foster is now accused of attempted murder, kidnapping and assault he previously been convicted in nevada for keeping his ex-girlfriend captive for two weeks back in 2019 investigators say she was found with broken ribs and other injuries, having been bound with zip ties and duct tape, but she managed to escape. >> we know that recently he attempted to murder a woman in a

election in georgia. they said that decisions were imminent mr. trump similarly responded on truth social to this case, suggesting that willis focus instead on crime in atlanta. in addition, the former president is also dishing out his own lawsuits on monday, mr. trump sued journalist bob woodward and his publisher, simon and shuster for $50 million. mr. trump claims in the suit that he never agreed that the audio interviews kukconducted between him and woodward could be sold. woodward released the book "the tr trump tapes" last year the double murder trial of alec murdaugh is in its second week jurors got a dramatic show and tell of the weapons found at the property
