a wreck near austin is fatal. this morning, a bitter blast of winter. ice, snow and extreme cold barrelling its way across the country, more than a dozen states from the southern plains to the ohio valley. >> it is going to feel like it is about minus 2, minus 3 outside. >> the dallas/fort worth area, practically a bull's eye for this latest severe system. >> it is pretty treacherous so far. >> reporter: the freezing rain creating icy roads and complete car sliding on this road in dallas and frightening accidents with this car, flipped over. the conditions grounding hundreds of flights in the region as crews worked to de-ice planes. also caught in the storm's cross-hairs, tulsa, oklahoma. >> that is all ice. >> reporter: and fayetteville, arkansas. >> raining ice at my house. >> reporter: freezing rain. ice. sleet and snow. wreaking havoc on the roads.

>> i didn't do anything. >> reporter: two memphis police officers on leave this morning as the department investigates their actions in the death of tyre nichols. memphis police declined to name one of the officers, but identified the other as preston hemphill a five-year officer of the force. during the altercation, hemphill seen on his body camera helping to pin nichols down and pointing a taser that authorities say he fired. >> i hope they stomp his [ bleep ]. >> reporter: lawyers for nichols' family are now asking why hemphill who is white has not been fired. >> he should be terminated right along with the other five black officers that were terminated. >> reporter: hemphill's attorney says his client was not present at the second scene and is cooperating with officials in the investigation. in all, seven memphis police officers are off the job following the brutal beating, including the five ex-officers now charged with murder. the district attorney says more charges could follow. >> we will be looking at everybody. we're doing it in a thorough and fair manner. >> reporter: this comes as

others who were on the scene are also facing disciplinary action. emts robert long and jamichael sandridge, and lieutenant michelle whitaker have all been fired. the memphis fire department says an internal investigation found they violated numerous methods and protocols and the two attending emts failed to do an adequate assessment of nichols. cameras show them walking away from nichols and leaving him as he rolled around on the ground in pain. two shelby county deputies remain under investigation. a spokesperson confirms. >> they either failed him by using excessive force or they failed by not intervening and they failed by not rendering aid. >> reporter: candles, teddy bears and balloons now mark the street corner where things went so wrong. overnight vigils held around the country for the 29-year-old dad. >> he really did want to change the world. and he did change the world, you know. his name will never be forgotten. >> tyre nichols' funeral is set for tomorrow. what more do you know about

city of lakeland. officials say multiple gunmen fired from all four windows of the car striking victims on both sides of the street. no word yet on a motive but police believe it was a targeted attack. two of the victims in critical condition. now to the latest on alex murdaugh's double murder trial in south carolina. the disbarred attorney accused in the death of his wife and son. prosecutors putting on a dramatic show and tell for jurors showing firearm seized from murdaugh's gun rooms and the attorney objected saying all of the ballistics tests show that these guns were not involved in the murders. >> this is not relevant. but sending, you know, this weapon after weapon, back into the jury room during jury deliberations we think is unfairly prejudicial. >> this agent gathered 12-gauge weapons for a reason because 12 gauge rounds were used to murder the murdaughs. >> the attorney suggesting

because there's two weapons used there may have been two different shooters. the state pushed back on that assertion, saying it could also mean there was one shooter using two guns. now to a frightening close call. it happened in hawaii. a boulder crashed through a home and narrowly missed a woman inside. >> whoa, are you okay? >> thankfully, nobody inside that home was injured. but that giant rock did do extensive damage, as you can see. it is about five feet around in size. it is unclear what caused that boulder to roll down the hill behind the home, but it did happen after days of heavy rain. >> she was like a foot away from that. >> oh, my gosh. turning now to that mystery that continues to unfold in a dallas zoo after the disappearance of two rare monkeys. >> officials are saying now they may have been taken. this is the fourth suspicious incident involving animals at the zoo in a month. nbc's morgan chesky is on the story for us there in dallas. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: hey, guys, good

morning. disturbing, troubling. down right bizarre at the dallas zoo. officials say they have quote clear evidence that the monkey habitat tampered with that led someone to potentially take the monkeys that are now at the center of a growing investigation. it is the curious face behind dallas zoo's latest mystery. two rare emperor tamarins almost identical to this one first labeled missing. now considered taken. the first warning sign monday morning. the zoo said the animal care team say that the habitat was intentional compromised leading police to say the tamarins were taken. >> the more i think about this, the more i think there is malintent behind it. >> reporter: the monkeys from the amazon rainforest and with special habitat and food needs

or going to waste? >> reporter: so, i think the most important thing is to really try to keep track of where you are at any one time, and one good idea is to download a tracking app, and there are a lot of them out there, but these will keep track of your points, of your miles, of your status, when you might see something starting to expire it will hopefully notify you before it expires, if you want to take action the next one, join a dine-in rewards program. hotels and restaurants will help you earn points toward your status on whatever airline or hotel chain you want and then use a loyalty shopping portal. it essentially does the same thing, but the whole idea is maximize those credit card purchases, so you're building points okay but here's the big catch so many people now have so many points and the airlines have fewer seats on any given flight, actually flying for free,

some melted butter, the milk with -- or the water, with the milk, you get a richer, deeper flavor and with all of these three colors, we're going to do a cool hack, doing everything in one tray using only one bowl i don't like doing dishes. so you kind of visually split the batter into thirds. >> and you use the foil there. >> you have the foil dividers. >> that's brilliant. >> i like doing this with frosting, too. it helps all of the colors kind of stay in the same family anyway, you will get a pink color, whatever color you want for the middle more red and then you keep adding color to the rest of the batter to help make it more red and when it bakes you have the foil that keeps it separated and you com out with three separate cakes. >> that's it between the layers, you have some frosting. >> we are going to cut out some circles. this is a great project to do with friends, you know, with your girls on valentine's day, with your partner, however you want, there is plenty of cake here.
