8:37 am
to you what a conversation this was you know, when you talk with sheriff dawanna witt, even she well tell you that law enforcement was probably the last profession she expected to join growing up. she doesn't shy away from her difficult childhood, in fact she does it every chance she can, a way to inspire others and help build trust, something that is especially meaningful when you consider where she's serving inside the hennepin county jail, nate johnson's free writers class has a special guest. >> this is the end of the line for you. >> sheriff witt, a few weeks on the job, it is not unusual to see her here but what might surprise you is what she says. >> i was that person who was afraid of the police i saw my brothers get kicked many times by the police. >> reporter: it is why she says
8:38 am
she never expected to find herself in a uniform what led you to law enforcement? >> you know, i used to tell people, it was an accident i do tell people, this is my purpose. >> reporter: if there is a conventional path to law enforcement, sheriff wit is far from it. growing up in south minneapolis with her four siblings, drugs and violence were always nearby. by age 15, dawanna was a mother. >> i saw myself as a statistic. >> as a teenaged mother. >> as a teenaged mother. as someone growing up in poverty. my mother had a drug addiction my father was an alcoholic >> reporter: and with that environment came a very early mistrust of police >> a plan was shot, he was shot by the police, actually, and i was four or five years old. >> reporter: years ago, something changed when sheriff wit working for a nonprofit happened to take a tour of the jail. >> at end of that tour, they talked about how they needed women in the field and women of color. >> reporter: she applied on a whim and got hired as a detention deputy that's when her views started to shift. >> i started having more encounters with law enforcement. men and women. and getting to know them as
8:39 am
individuals. you know, my barriers that i had, they were falling >> reporter: over the next two decades, she worked her way up through the ranks. then, in january - >> according to the the best of my ability. >> reporter: sheriff witt became the first woman to lead her department and the first black female sheriff in the state of minnesota, a milestone that is all the more meaningful when you consider where she is. >> black lives matter. black lives matter >> reporter: hennepin county the very county where george floyd was killed the street where he died was just a block away from the community center where sheriff witt grew up >> you watch that video, along with the rest of the world, the big difference of course is that you were watching it happen in your own community >> that was probably one of the most difficult times of my entire life. it ruined a lot of things that i had been done to make this profession better and to bridge the gap with the community. >> reporter: she said the hits came from all sides. >> people would look at me as a black woman, as a black person,
8:40 am
in a uniform, like what are you doing? you know, being called names, traitor, to aunty tammy, instead of uncle tom. >> fellow black people who would look at you and with law enforcement. >> exactly you know, you're on the wrong side sorry, i can never talk about this, i was getting a little choked up, but if people would have just known the story, of like what it takes to do this job, as a black person, and to have people say those things to you, it was hurtful. >> despite it all, she says she never thought about leaving the job. >> i knew that i needed to be a person who could interpret, if you will, what people were seeing, because everybody couldn't understand that >> for sheriff witt, then a major, that meant talking to people protesters face to face even when other officers warned her not to
8:41 am
a step toward building trust >> we've had a sense of safety and security >> reporter: last november, one of her very first visits, after winning the election, was the jail and as she walked among the inmates, sheriff witt got a big surprise >> people were standing up and applauding me. they were like that's our sheriff, ya'll i realized that i'm a symbol of hope for some people and a hope for change. so i got a lot to live up to, but i'm ready for it. >> reporter: just a fascinating conversation with sheriff witt i should note that we did that interview before the news of tyre nichols' death rocked the country. she has since in a statement spoken out against those officers' actions. in her previous role before she was elected sheriff, she was in charge of the jail and courthouse security. that means that she was the head of security during the derek chauvin trial. she talked about how difficult that period was for the entire city, but she says her philosophy then as well as now, is i talk to everyone, she says that's how you build trust and
8:42 am
that's something that she says she brings to this role as sheriff. guys >> what a journey. >> yes, she is extraordinary, what a conversation. i could listen to another two hours of that. >> yes. >> thank you for bringing us that story >> thank you, blayne. up next, we've got some exercises to strengthen your heart. plus the remarkable success o in las vegas, the most popular food is broccoli. yeah, that's the only food. they have broccoli smoothies, and broccoli pancakes, and broccoli ice cream, and broccoli hotdogs, and of course, they have raw unseasoned broccoli..... with stems. -daddy, i don't want to go to las vegas with you and mommy tomorrow.

8:45 am
teaching kindergarten when i got sick with what i thought was a bad cold it went on for weeks and i continued to get weaker. my mother insisted i get a chest x-ray. that's when the doctors discovered i had cardio myopathy, a disease that changes the way the heart functions. i was rushed to the hospital for emergency open heart surgery five years ago and then my heart stopped. after being revived, i lived with a heart pumping device for six months then i referred a life-saving heart transplant i had to learn how to walk again and use walking as a means to recover. my favorite place to walk is at universal studios. i joined the "start today" walking challenge last june because of the inspiring community. >> we're here at universal orlando. >> and in november, of last year, i was able to be one of the walkers. >> here we go. >> alongside al roker at universal. since my surgery, i have lost 120 pounds and walked a 5 k for donate life. i continue to walk to keep my heart strong >> now, let's meet her, kathy

8:47 am
motivational on videos and it is great because every day there are new posts about how much people have walked or getting motivated. >> steph, we think about, it is valentine's day, in february, and heart, and emotion, but it is also about health >> that's right. you know, a lot of people think about cardio exercise, when it comes to their heart health and that is extremely important, we've got our walking challenge, but in addition for this month for heart healthy month we are focusing on strength training and that's because research actually shows when you combine cardio with strength training, you get more benefits for your heart than if you were just to do cardio exercise and that's because we know, building lean muscle mass helps us to speed up the metabolism, burn more calories and therefore help us maintain a healthy weight. >> so you talk about upper body exercises. >> so we will start up with upper body exercises and grab the dumb bells, three pounds, kind of light and go up from there. what we are going to do first is the w exercise

8:53 am
good to have you back. >> thanks for having me. >> this is a misconception in lot of community force a long time, the idea that healthy has to be expensive but you maintain not so. >> this is why dieticians exist. >> yes >> so you know, there are a lot of tips and tricks to eat healthy. for example, people always think, you know, vegetables and fruit are super expensive, and you can only eat organic well, actually, you know, the dollar store has frozen fruits and vegetables for sale, for one dollar so if you want to have vegetables in your life, and you are afraid, or you don't have time, or you know, cost is a problem for you, you can go to the dollar store and you can get a bag of carrots, or a frozen bag of berries >> to be clear, there is the same nutritional value in frozen fruit and vegetables as raw? >> that's right. and minimal processing so they're allowed to ripen and peak and flash frozen. so it's up for grabs >> okay. oat meal bakes >> that's what i do. i make these oat meal bakes for my kids. and i bake it and they think i'm a genius they add peanut butter, and fat and protein and fiber and anti-oxidants.
8:54 am
i'm a winner >> pretty simple >> yeah. >> let's talk about veggies now. a simple trick for veggies >> find the ones you like. my son only likes carrots and you get them in bulk on a sunday, cut them out, put them in water in a glass container, for my kids, we put them in zip lock bags because they're grabbing and going >> buying in bulk is the secret. >> it is the secret. and you go through it pretty quick. >> and you mentioned buy nonstarch veggies. >> nonstarch veggies help keep you full and help your gut stay healthy, it is good for immunity and it is winter, and people are getting more sick, so more vegetables help you feel better. >> none starch. >> carrots, celery, arugula, spinach. >> one of the greatest misconceptions perhaps is seafood is expensive. >> it can be expensive if you're going to go to, you know, a fishmonger and you're going to buy $30 a pound halibut or salmon, but if you don't want to do that, and also people are a little bit weird about fish, as a leftover, so buying that in bulk, you can get them at the
8:55 am
regular grocer, or you can get them at, you know, a sam's or a costco and now you're just getting one piece at a time, and you can defrost before you leave the house, put it in the fridge, and when you get home, it will be ready, olive oil, deon mustard in the air fryer and you have one perfect piece and you're not wasting >> packed with omega 3s. >> cardiovascular health and brain health and reduce the risk of cancer. a lot of recipes call for butter and olive oil and how do we save there? >> so i buy in bulk. you can get two to three pounds. >> that is quite the large container of olive oil. >> yes, also, you can get online, just a container that will allow you to pour perfectly like portion that out so you could fill it up and hide that so you don't have to look at it. it is like 16 to 20 dollars depending on the weight that you. and remember, the serving size of olive oil is still one
8:56 am
tablespoon, so we know it ha anti-inflammatory properties but one tablespoon is sufficient. quickly saving money on snacking as well >> i'm a dietician so snacking is good, i'm thinking about the snacks that i'm having, and i love to go to any kind of pharmacy to get the deals, so the two for one, for the chick peas or the fiber, looking for fiber and protein. but also, i will always die on the sword of chocolate, which is my favorite thing, i can eat it every single day, it has fat, it has protein and if you get over 85% it also has fiber. >> vanessa, thank you. >> my pleasure. more coming up on the third and fourth hour, including the one and only terry crews joining us live live plus we'll have more on tom brady's surprise announcement as well, that he's retiring, again. good morning. this time around, it sounds like he really means it. tom brady is finally hanging up his cleats. he made the announcement on social media this morning saying he is retiring for good. brady won his final super bowl
