weather is moving into the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when it's expected to move into your neighborhood and your week weekend. >> breaking news, gunfire in the streets of oak lan. the investigation unfolding following an overnight shooting. >> it was scary because it looked very close and huge plumes of black smoke. >> a fire damages several home in the oakland hills and the scary turn of events is bringing up fresh memories for many. this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. it's friday morning and we

have made it here. thanks so much for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike. friday rain, kari is tracking that. >> not only are we wearing red for heart month but seeing red on the radar with heavier rain that's starting to move into the peninsula and reaching across the bay and will make it into parts of the east bay as well. our storm ranger is tracking it all as we are seeing lighter showers for parts of the north bay and we will see the steady rain continue for the next couple of hours in some of those spots. if we get a closer look at san francisco, the rain has picked up quite a bit and will be moving toward oakland, as well as richmond, and eventually toward lafayette. we're also going to see the heavy rain continue for the peninsula, so you do want to make sure you're allowing extra time to get to work. it hasn't yet reached san jose as we see it taking a little longer to get to some of those spots in the south bay, but we

are going to see rain moving in over the next couple of hours as we get our first rain in about a two-week span, a good measurable rain. i'll be tracking that and we'll talk about the weekend ahead. let's take a live look and we're looking at all the rain coming down. you can see all the rain pouring down. from time to time we see bursts of traffic and then clearing. there are more crews in the north and south of the bridge and there will be traffic lights right now. watch for standing water. that's registered and look at all the blue coming through the north bay, along 101, across the bridge and into san francisco, down into the peninsula, pacifica, half moon bay. it's pushing across the san mateo bridge. we'll show that to you coming up. back to you. >> thanks, mike. and you can keep a close eye on that weather and track the rain by downloading our free nbc

bay area app. you can also get that breaking weather alert straight to your phone. breaking news in what appears to be a deadly shooting in east oakland. police were called to the scene about 12:30 this morning near 80th avenue. at this point police will only confirm to us that a shooting took place there. one officer at the scene did tell our photographer that someone died and the evidence we saw from the video seems to back that up. someone who lives nearby also reported multiple shots being fired. this morning firefighters are still on the scene mondayering hot spots in a fire in oakland hills where flames destroyed one home and damaged two others. it was a smoky scene, you can see it from overhead from nbc bay area sky ranger. >> this is new video. we have video from overnight. "today in the bay's" thom jensen has more on fresh memories from some people living in that area. >> reporter: the fire started

just after 4:00 p.m. in the rear of this house in the 6800 block of aitken drive. it was engulfed in flames and started spreading. this boy was doing homework when he heard a lot of commotion and saw the house behind his home was in flames and burning fast. >> i was really scared because it looked very close and just huge plumes of black smoke. i immediately called my father and told him. >> aidan and his friend were too young who have witness today 1991 oakland hills fire but they know the story. 25 people died and nearly 3,000 homes were destroyed. >> fires around here really puts us in shock a little bit because our house survived the '91 fires. >> reporter: they say they were relieved to see the fire contained. oakland fire station 6 is just a half mile from the scene and firefighters were here in a couple of minutes. >> we certainly never get

studio. >> is it star dance studio? >> yeah, yeah, that's the one. the guy is reloading -- >> is anyone hurt? how long ago? >> just two minutes ago. >> okay. did he run away on foot or did he go in a vehicle? >> i don't know. he tried to reload the gun. people just ran! >> that gunman killed 11 people, wounding nine others, using a submachine-style semiautomatic handgun. a minor traffic dispute ended with a man charging a car with a machete. the driver, jerry gonzales, captured the encounter with the cameras in his car. he was on the road monday night in san jose when a driver came up behind him and flashed his high beams. he says the other driver stopped his car in front of him and

opened his trunk and pulled out a machete. you can hear what happens next. the machete-wielding driver smashed the window, got back in his car and sped off. gonzales called police and followed them. >> i've got a guy here, he's got a machete. he's got a machete. >> when he pulled it out, i was, like, oh, man, he's going to try to attack me. i should try to get out of here as fast as possible. >> police are still investigating. you can watch more on nbcbayarea.com, on our home page under most read. new video shows a tesla bursting into flames on the side of a freeway. this was near sacramento over the weekend. take a look at that. they were on highway 50 when they say smoke started coming out of the front of the tesla. they heard a loud pop, pulled

over, they saw flames. they say they barely made it out before the car exploded. >> i was really scared. i was panicking a lot. i mean, just like we living it i'm getting emotional right now. it was really scary. i mean, so many thoughts are going through your head. >> a traumatic experience. fire investigators say the fire started in the battery compartment. crews used about 6,000 gallons of water to put it out. in 2021 the national highway safety transformation board did not open an investigation into fires calling them rare events. tesla's ceo elon musk has said only 0.1% of teslas have ever caught fire. in danville there is video capturing the moments before thieves got away with items worth half a million dollars. you can see one of those burglars, take a look right here, falls into the pond.

rain for this afternoon. we do have more rain in our weekend forecast and i'll go hour-by-hour coming up in a few minutes. >> we're looking at the north bay, an example of some of that rain hitting the lens. on the roadways, a light commute so far. friday light, in fact. but lower the speeds and allow yourself some more time because it's slick in many spots. we'll show you as the cameras continue to show more and more rain around the bay. we'll show you the east bay and across the bay coming up. good morning. i'm silvana hanao from cnbc. wall street is set to open lower after stocks were mostly positive yesterday. investors digested the federal reserve's latest move and a better than feared earnings report from meta. the nasdaq rising more than 3% for its best day since november, while the s&p 500 was up 1.5%. though the dow did close slightly lower. in focus today, the monthly jobs report which is expected to show hiring was solid in january

despite high profile layoffs at companies like microsoft, google and amazon. employers have added at least 200,000 for 24 straight months, but that streak is expected to have ended last month. a trio of tech giants could cast a shadow over the market. apple reporting it's first drop in quarterly revenue since 2019, the new iphone couldn't boost sales enough and apple was hit by supply chain problems in trouble. google posting its first lower revenue since the pandemic. they have competition from ai bots like chat gpc. a strong black friday weekend, but growth in the aws computing business is slowing. starbucks rewards members can may with venmo. paypal says customers can use their accounts and add your

taking a live look at our satellite radar, as we are tracking a wet start to your friday. the rain took a little vacation for a couple of weeks, but it's back. >> i'm glad it's back. >> gave us time to dry out. >> at this point we're just, like, okay, it's been dry for a while. and now it's february, so it's back. as we get started this morning, you do need to check the windshield wipers, hopefully you did that yesterday so they're all good this morning, and then as we go into the rest of the day it tapers off to spotty showers. we're using storm ranger to track it all, our mobile doppler radar. if you have the nbc bay area app, you can get the same view that i'm seeing here in the studio. we're going to see the light to

moderate rain continue for the north bay, but it's picked up quite a bit from richmond over to san francisco and over toward san ramon, starting to get a little heavier right now. it's been pouring pretty hard for much of the peninsula, from south san francisco to san mateo, over to half moon bay. and then it gets lighter for mountain view, but it's about to pick up in the next few minutes. it's finally approaching san jose and moving into los gatos as well. the rain just getting going in some of those spots, but we'll see it quickly sweeping through and then off and on showers for the rest of the late morning hours into the afternoon. but really at any point today we could still see some rain coming down. there may even be some breaks with sunshine, and there will be just spots in the bay area that gets a little bit more additional showers. it looks like the rain stays very close to us as we go into the day on saturday, so we may not completely dry out. this is right in time for the chinese new year parade and it

looks like there's going to be at least some light rain, but it gets heavier as we go into late tomorrow evening, as well as sunday morning. throughout the day on sunday, lingering showers and then clearing out. as far as how much rain we're expecting, a decent amount. anywhere from an 1 to closer to 1 1/2 inches in the santa cruz mountains, and then beyond that we could see rain for next wednesday and then again next weekend, so we're back into a more stormy weather pattern while the sierra will see a decent amount of snow this weekend, up to 21 inches. we could see additional snowfall going into next week. another 55 inches of snowfall over the course of seven days. so that's going to be another big, amazing thing to see for our winter pattern. mike, you're seeing a messy drive across the san mateo bridge. >> we talked about the rain going through san mateo into half moon bay and it's continuing across the bay. over on the hayward side you see

the blurry look, the slick roadways and how the lights are a little blurry as well. that will be an issue for visibility. it's going to continue, because as we take a look at the radar, we're seeing it across here and then farther north. the wet road index, the blue, puddling along highway 1. highway 2 still has a sinkhole. only one lane past the sinkhole. in richmond, more rain falling at the toll plaza. back to you. >> thanks, mike. a bit of intrigue in the skies over montana. u.s. officials say they think a weather balloon may be hovering over a missile base and might belong to china. according to officials, there was initially some debate regarding whether or not the balloon should be shot down. eventually the u.s. decided against that move because they didn't want to endanger the people below. there's a full report on this

potential incident coming up later for you this morning on "today" and that's coming up on 7:00 right after us here on "today in the bay." a live look at san francisco this friday morning, where home buyers trying to make it in the bay can purchase a home significantly cheaper than months ago. according to redfin, san francisco has seen the greatest drop since oak, a decrease of almost 15%. oakland is at fourth with 11.6%, the drop, which is just over $700 a month. san jose coming in at 6%, with a monthly savings of around $960. redfin credits the drop in mortgage rates and the decreased housing demand. the chief economist expects home prices to level off. >> it's hard to predict, though, because san francisco is facing a lot of changes. there's no longer a strong pool of workers. you can get a tech job just about anywhere and a lot of those jobs are laying off
