"early today" starts right now glad you're with us. i'm frances rivera >> and i'm phillip mena. a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked southern turkey and syria early this morning that's according to turkish and syrian officials they say there are mother than 500 people dead. close to 3,000 more were injured. a frantic search for survivors is under way after buildings collapsed, trapping residents under rubble in northwest syria, the opposition syrian civil defense described the situation as disastrous, declaring an unofficial state of emergency.

they're urging people to evacuate buildings and gather in open areas according to the u.s. geological survey, the quake was about 20 miles from the major city and provincial capital of gaziantep, turkey when it struck at 3:17 local time it was centered 11 miles deep and a strong 6.7 aftershock hit about 10 minutes later >> turkey's emergency management minister reported that about 50 aftershocks had been felt, the strong west a 6.6 magnitude. national security adviser jake sullivan said the u.s. is profoundly concerned over the impacts of the destructive quake. he added that the administration stands ready to provide any and all needed assistance and will closely monitor the situation in coordination with the government of turkey. in ohio, a toxic chemicals fire burning for a fourth straight day after a freight train derailed in the state's east cars carrying carcinogenic vinyl chloride are on fire and plumes of toxic smoke can be seen for

the cold front will move slowly. rain developing from texas through the ohio and we could see the chance of stronger storms along the gulf coast. that would be strongest with the potential for tornadoes on tuesday. and also the chance for heavy rain this all moves to the west on wednesday. even the northeast you lee is some wet weather ahead of the system, we're looking at really warm temperatures spring-like in many areas. there is the bulls-eye for the rain locally 3 to 4 inches of ra normal for portions of the midatlantic, the northeast temperatures to the 50s in washington all right, guys. big difference in terms of the temperatures we'll talk more about that, and also look at your week ahead, in just a bit >> appreciate it
