responses. there was even some heated exchanges. some catching the president by surprise. >> becnel is killing more than 70,000 americans per year. >> congresswoman marjorie taylor green was seen and heard repeatedly shouting, liar, at the present. it's the first time that president biden addressed a divided congress. he talked about the economy, prescription drug prices, police violence and banning assault weapons but he took aim at republicans at several points but got the fiercest reaction when he said some republicans want to cut medicare and social security. >> instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some republicans want medicare and social security sunset. i'm not saying it's the majority. anybody who doubts it. contact my office.

the. we begin with the watch party in san francisco at manny's. we met in a word, it was feisty. president biden came to gibber with a list of the compliments of the last two years and a good number of fingers for his republican colleagues. >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states. president biden entered the chamber and for the first time in his presidency faced a new republican majority in the house of representatives. his speech began as many do. highlighting some of the brightest spots in his administration so far. >> i stand here tonight after we created with the help of many people in this room 12 million new jobs. more jobs created in two years than any present created in four years. >> the most recent job support from her this week was not 500,000 nonfarm jobs was good news. president biden touted progress winding down the covid-19 pandemic. prosecuting people for the

january 6 assault on the capital and highlight a flurry of new programs and funding passed by his democratic colleagues during last year's session. but congresswoman nancy pelosi doesn't hold the gavel in congress anymore. republican house speaker kevin mccarthy does now so president biden frequently called for bipartisan cooperation and joked about his opposition. severance date professor says it's unusual to have an and mid back and forth during the state of the union but she said the most jovial exchanges may not last too long after the speech. republican leadership are the voice little interest in working with him over the next two years. >> investing too much of his time and energy and political capital in that right now may leave him with a lot of things not accomplished. >> right now the present is dealing with low approval ratings with many blaming him for high prices on everything from gas to eggs. and in the bay area, the tech

their 50s. she deputies gave each a dose of narcan, a drug that can almost instantly refers the opioid overdose. only one person could be revived and was sent to the hospital. >> were trying to educate the public as best as we can but the reality is this stuff is moving very fast and it's very dangerous as you can tell from this incident. >> the three men who died have not been identified. authorities warned the drug is being laced with other drugs or even made to look like painkillers and sold on the street. gilroy city council says that one of the men was a longtime partner of her cousin. >> i didn't know he used fentanyl. i know he wasn't somebody who would play with his life that way. and we know that most people die from fentanyl, it's more like poisoning than an overdose. >> i think about their mothers. i think about their families. and the heartache that it causes. >> annmarie mcauley is part of mothers against drug addition and death. she says unfortunately gilmore

has seen a spike in federal use. across the south bay there were 135 fentanyl related deaths last year though it does not include december. nearly double from two years ago . five years ago there were 11 fentanyl deaths. she argues there needs to be more rehab and detox centers to help people in need. >> we are all affected and people are just starting to come out now and be honest about it and talk about it because here it is. it is at our front door. >> the sheriff deputy said they collected evidence at the home on the street last night and if they can link it to a fentanyl dealer they will hand it over to the das office and recommending homicide judges. and man accused of being on a mission to kill cops is in jail. the encounter happened in san jose last friday night. today sjpd released new video of the encounter. this gives a the video shows a

man getting out of his car after running a red light. then firing at the two officers who pulled him over. no one was hit. police say mendoza then took off. they believe he was on a mission to kill officers that night. actually stocking some officers at the airport and on the road before he was pulled over. after an hours long manhunt mendoza surrendered. the police chief said after his arrest the 30 year rate your old mendoza continually at asked if he company officers. >> it is a race against time tonight in both turkey and syria after that massive earthquake over the weekend. just look at this devastation. the death toll has reached more than 7200 people with so many more expected. and yet there are amazing stories of survival across the two countries. thousands of rescue crews and volunteer workers all working side by side in this rubble around the clock to pull out

survivors. >> you can hear the crowd cheering after an entire family was rescued in the syria. the father is smiling as he is carried away. his two children pulled out alive and just raised for the crowd to see. and then a bittersweet rescue in syria. this baby girl born in the rubble rescued hours after she was born. the infant's mother actually gave birth to her after the earthquake amid all that rubble. but the mom did not survive. now the newborn is in a hospital recovering. as you can imagine the need for both help for syria and turkey is urgent and bay area groups are wasting no time in responding. one relief organization in silicon valley collected quake relief supplies at this warehouse today. boxes of donations will fly out to turkey tomorrow. but the need is great. they need more supplies as soon

who is to blame for this. a car crashing into your own home. a man in contra costa county said his tesla drove itself into their home but the car was not on auto pilot. so what really happened here. we have the report from san ramon. >> i -- he said he was simply moving his tesla model from the front entrance to his house into his garage when the car seemed to take over. >> and then while going it was not stopping and bumped into the wall. >> the car went careening into his home. this was the scene this morning when the tesla was removed from the wall it plowed into. he said he was not on autopilot and believes the car accelerated on its own.

on the other side of that wall is plenty of damage. the car hit hard enough to knock the refrigerator from the kitchen to the living room. thankfully he wasn't hurt and neither was his family were upstairs when the crash happened. >> my family members and everyone was upstairs and everyone was okay. >> the driver said the car accelerated on its own neighbors are shaken up too. he said over half the neighborhood owns tesla's including himself. >> now i used to drive my tesla comfortably but looking at that when it becomes a self driving disaster. >> the city of san ramon notified that they can't use the garage until the insurance company provides an update on those repairs but he believes it could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix. >> tesla needs to look into that issue. i want to make sure other persons that it doesn't affect them. >> ebay has laid off workers.

multiple standing ovations from both sides as well as jeers and heckling from some republicans. his pitch directly to the public show that most people think that the countries had in the wrong direction. some are calling the most contentious state of the union we have seen in modern history. joining me now to talk about this more is dr. larry gersten. thank you for being here. let's start with the phrases we heard over and over from the president tonight. we heard him saying let's finish the job and we are just getting started could certainly with the state of the union but it sounded like he was teeing up for another term. >> when you are the president you want to do two things. you want to type your accomplishments but you want to point to your vision. where you want to take the country and what you heard was a mantra and we must have heard either six times. what we have done and what we have to do now. we must finish the job. this is all part of not just

resting on your laurels. he accomplished a lot. people want to know what can he do for me now and that's what the president did along with a very heavy appeal to bipartisanship. i cannot remember the last time a prison it appealed to the other side is much as joe biden did tonight. >> and we saw him kind of poke the republicans in some instances during the speech. it almost had a little bit of an english parliament vibe with him saying things to the republicans and the republicans clapping back at him sometimes and yet we saw speaker mccarthy get up numerous times to clap. and at times shush some of the republicans heckling the president. you are getting a good dose tonight of that 30+ group of republicans.

freedom caucus republicans who really gave mccarthy a hard time getting elected because he wasn't far enough to the right. and tonight you saw them. you saw them go at the president more than once. people can decide for themselves whether it made any sense. the thing i thought was interesting was when he started talking about social security and some republicans he said let's get rid of it and some republicans have. that was not a dream. that was the truth and then the maga republicans got outwards and started screaming at him. liar, liar. biden turned around and said oh, you say you are not in in favor of this. okay. now we know that social security and medicare will not be taken off the table. it was mastery. he took something that was literally attempting to gun him down and turn the whole thing around 180 degrees. i've never seen anything like it. >> let's talk about the republican rebuttal. it was done by arkansas governor

sanders. she delineated the differences in her in age and style from the president and then about the parties when she said what is normal and what is crazy. talk to me about that. >> i think that was a very good beginning for sarah huckabee sanders. it was clever the way she talked about this and that. i'm young and the youngest read publican governor. he's old and the oldest present. that was very clever but then she went off and she really anchored herself with the far right. yes as you said characterizing the prison as crazy. she didn't say he is crazy but that is crazy. the things he is doing is crazy. so she might as well have said that and talking about things like god and country and freedom and suppression and she painted the democrats so dark. some people will find that to be an absolutely great distinction. i think for a lot of people if you're looking for something in the middle. if you're looking for something to bring parties together, governor sanders did not show that tonight.

>> thank you. this is a long road ahead for us. thank you. >> not just members of congress and high-ranking government officials but there were plenty of everyday citizens invited to tonight state of the union. chuck hammer, the owner of pizza my heart was inside the house chamber. there are locations in monterey and santa cruz counties that were damaged in the recent storms. his video of one of the locations. congressman jimmy invited him to represent the many businesses that were impacted. hammer said it was a surreal evening for him as he sent sat in front broke a few seats away from bono and paul pelosi. and there were several moments that stuck out to him. >> seated just a couple seats away from terry nichols parents and that was a touching moment when they're talking about the talk and present biden talked about that. the couple that had the little one with cancer.

that was quite touching also. and i thought one of the surprising moments was when he talked about reining in social media and it seemed like both sides kind of cheered on that. that surprised me. >> you were there today because you were invited to really represent the small businesses who have been heavily impacted by the recent storms here in california. how does that make you feel? >> it made me feel like the federal government actually cares about us and santa cruz and monterey are two of the smaller counties in california and to have the federal government come out and support what happened makes all of us feel much better. >> hammer is talking about getting a chance to meet with congressman panetta to provide an up date on storm recovery efforts. >> you may have noticed lawmakers wearing pins with the number 18 70.

that's the year of the first known police killing of an unarmed free black person in the united states. it was the idea of representative bonnie watson coleman a democrat from new jersey. she said the pins are a call for action on reforming policing. >> we have 1100 almost 1200 that fall into that category now. this has got to stop. we have got to have accountability. we have to have responsibility. >> many members of the congressional black caucus and other democrats wore the pins this evening. >> reinstate the chief. that's the cry in oakland. the city's belief chief was put on leave amid accusations that he failed to properly investigate officer misconduct. we have more on the growing chorus of voices demanding the chief be reinstated. >> city hall, we are not going away. we will be here and continue to be here because we know that he

hasn't done anything wrong. >> today brought a new round of pleas to reinstate the oakland police chief ron instructed this man comes from open committee members and grassroot anti-violence organizers. >> for every second oakland police armstrong is not restated its causing damage to our committee. >> armstrong was placed on a mystery league two weeks ago after an independent investigation and that he failed to properly investigate and punish officers in two misconduct cases. armstrong maintains that he followed all policy. he is not the first oakland chief to face controversy. in fact some have called the position a revolving door. since 2009 the department has gone through 10 chiefs with most resigning or being fired amid controversy. >> i think we've come too far in the police department to start over. i think he's a respected man in

the committee. he's from oakland. i trust him to do the job. >> brenda luster son to gun violence. at today's rally she said the chief has made progress and she fears crime will rise without armstrong leading the department . >> we want to continue the work he's doing in the community for the families that have lost their children. he has been the number one advocate. >> chief armstrong also sent a letter to the mayor today claiming there several flaws in the investigated report and he says misplaced blame is what led to him being put on repeat that independent report has never been made public but the mayor previously said the chief was placed on leave while the city reviews the findings. the office declined to comment when we asked about the investigation and calls to reinstate the chief today. email armstrong supporters say there calls will only get louder until the chief is back in uniform. >> you cannot get us to believe that somebody that's working this hard to keep their job

it's a struggle to avoid in the bay area. this is a school teacher in richmond. she has two degrees. a bachelors and masters in education but she says even with those credentials she is not making enough money to keep a roof over her head. she's not the only teacher struggling. here is jody hernandez. >> it hasn't been easy at all. i come and i try to spruce myself up and keep a smile on my face but on the inside it's a struggle. >> teaching schoolchildren is all natalie ever wanted to do. but the sixth-grade teacher never imagined she would be working full time and still unable to make ends meet. >> i have been between my car, motel 6 and airbnb whenever i

>> the president of the teachers union says she is not the only teacher living on the edge. he said west contra costa school district teachers are among the lowest paid in the bay area. and he says they are currently at an impasse with the district. as they negotiate for higher wages. >> about two weeks ago we held a rally with 700 people spoke and people were in tears letting them know how desperate they are. >> they cannot afford to live in this community. they are devoting time and energy to fight for their own survival. >> the district acknowledges that teachers are struggling and they say they are working rapidly to readjust budget priorities in recognition that many of our educators are currently experiencing economic hardships which has been worsened by rising inflation and the economic climate of the greater bayer. they say they are offering a 10% raise. >> i don't regret coming here because i love that i'm chasing my dreams but it makes me sad
