with us. i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. i want to get you caught up on everything going on. let's start with a look at the forecast today. meteorologist, kari hall, has the forecast as we head out the door. >> it's a cold start and we have to bundle up the next few hours. right now we are at 38 degrees in mountain view, and it's 48 in san francisco. 42 in oakland, and 39 right now in concord. as we head out the door in palo alto, the start of the day, 43 right now and then we will see our temperatures dipping a few more degrees before sunrise. it will be nice and sunny and you may want to take that lunch outside, we will be at 60 degrees. we will look ahead for what is in the weekend, but for now let's go to mike. we did see a good volume of traffic, and you might notice more traffic right now, so i am getting a feel for how things

could be throughout the east bay. no problems but feels like there's more traffic early at the bay bridge. there's reports of a minor crash north 880 around fifth, and chp was talking about a potential traffic break, and i have not seen slowing so we will continue to watch that. the disabled vehicle off 282 and highway 4, and not affecting the interchange. we should this portion of 680 with the slowing as crews clear this morning. the father accused of trying to kill his family by driving over a cliff will stand before a judge in redwood city this morning. this is a heartbreaking story, bob. >> reporter: it is. good morning, laura. patel is expected to enter a plea in the court behind me later this morning on charges he tried to kill his wife and two

children. on january 2nd, patel intentionally drove his car off the cliff, and the pas pasadena doctor, that's patel, and his wife and two children were injured but survived. he has been charged with three counts of attempted murder with enhancements of causing great bodily harm and domestic violence. the wife making incriminating statements to paramedics. >> there are cameras on that, and so we have video showing the movement of the car after it left the tunnel and went up the hill and turned off of the road and turned to go down the cliff. >> the judge did issue a no harassment order to limit

patel's contact with his family and especially with his wife. attempted murder cases are always hard to prosecute, and in this situation he believes the prosecution has only circumstantial evidence. if patel is convicted he could face life in prison. reporting live here in redwood city, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. thank you, bob. the clock is ticking for rescuers to find survivors following the deadly earthquake in turkey and syria. that death toll has surpassed 17,000. you can see what they are up against. many are trapped under mountains of debris, and that window of survival is closing. one bay area woman says she has yet to hear from her family in turkey and she is frightened. you can see what is left of that home is rubble.

southwest airlines headed to hearings in washington. congress ready to grill executives about all the airlines' problems. its pilot union said the airline had badly outdated software and that contributed to the meltdown over the christmas holiday. the house oversight committee had a hearing on wednesday about twitter, looking into the company's quashing into the news article of hunter biden in 2020. this is not the first time congress investigated this. there was something new. this person, former executive testified twitter would change its rule to avoid enforcing consequences on donald trump's tweets. the executive testified the white house tried to get twitter to remove a crude tweet from krissy teigen, calling the president names.

it was about the danger of trying to suppress information. netflix trying to clarify its password policy, not here in america yet but it's getting closer. they just started enforcing it in canada. lots of people have questions like what if i travel for work and want to watch? can my kid in college use the family account? this company has a history of confusing announcements. back in 2011, netflix tried to split itself in two companies and ended up just apologizing for the whole thing. >> how sorry i am of the way we handled the communication around the big changes.

of our plants as well as pets. you may have to scrape frost off the windshield before you get going. our temperature in santa rosa, 36 degrees. it's 37 in mountain view and in livermore. some of the colder spots to start will shape up to be the milder spots this afternoon. a significant warm-up is coming our way headed for the upper 60s for los gatos, and 69 in san josé. 66 in novato, and 64 in san francisco. the warmest temperatures, 71 in morgan hill and in san martin. as we go into the day tomorrow a significant cooldown. this is the last day it will feel like this. in fact for the weekend it will feel chilly once the cold front comes in. we can see the long line of clouds off the coast ahead of the cold front. it will bring us a couple spotty showers. it's so hit or miss. our rain chances are so slight. it mostly comes down late friday evening into early saturday

morning. it's mostly the north bay that could really see some more measurable rain, but most of us are not going to see a lot out of this, especially in parts of the east bay. the south bay may have trace amounts of rainfall, but looks higher for the north bay. the rest of the forecast, we continue to stay dry. our 7-day shows we are going from upper 60s to low 60s, and upper 50s for sunday and then a nice rebound heading into sunday, so you can open up the windows and doors if you are going to be celebrating and watching the big game. mike, you are also looking at the peninsula. >> yeah, we are starting with a look -- we don't always look at palo alto because things are much busier in the bay, and right now we are calm, so that's good. 280 moving very nicely. as we see on the map, green sensors. el camino showing slowing with the construction crew.

>> he called on chris chmura's team to clear the air. >> good morning. michael in concord noticed something weird in his california bill, two lines charged california taxes, plus south dakota taxes. there's no reason for out of the state taxes, he says. he called verizon every month for a year trying to get this resolved. no success. he dialed us. we reached out to verizon and the very next day it contacted michael saying it would work on a fix. the next month michael's phone bill had no south dakota taxes. he said without your intervention, i am confident the conflict that has gone on 16 months would not be resolved. they credited him for the extra taxes. they said they were grateful to michael for allowing us to continue to earn his loyalty.

groundhog day, and we are seeing fog in parts of the north bay, visibility down to half a mile up around santa rosa. as you are head out the door, only 35 degrees. chilly out there and even frosty in some spots. as we go into today, once the fog lifts we will see sunshine again for this afternoon. a nice recovery headed for 60 degrees at noon, and we will be cold again for tomorrow morning. we will talk about some changes ahead, but, mike, you have been watching the bay bridge toll plaza. >> when we first looked half an hour ago, things were looking heavier than normal at this time of day, and we are looking at a standard flow. the good news is things have not shaped up to be worse at this time. we are looking at a little slowing at the top of your screen. we are looking at highway 4 through concord, and builds

somehow you can be charged with more minor crimes and then be out in a year. >> social media posts suggested anti-semitic views. a oakland bakery owner is in a medically induced coma after being attacked. she was backing out of a parking spot when a car blocked her in, and thieves jumped out and smashed her window and stole her purse. angel allegedly chased them down but got caught in the suspect's car door and was dragged more than 50 feet hitting her head several times. the gofundme account has surpassed $50,000.

angel cakes has been in business since 2008. a 21-year-old carpenter was shot on september 6th along larsh way near jefferson park. he was dropped off near a hospital where he died two days later. so far there have been no arrests made. new this morning, heart attack deaths more common in younger people following the covid-19 pandemic. researchers say hold on before you point a finger at the covid vaccine. one of them will be on the "today" show this morning. and kris sanchez is taking a closer look at what the study shows. >> this was a national study that looked at heart attack deaths starting in 2020 and going through the surge. it showed heart attack deaths were up for all age groups but the biggest spike was among young adults. take a look at the numbers here. 30% increase in adults 25 to 44,

which is a group not considered high risk for heart attacks. and a 20% in adults 45 to 64, and a 15% increase in adults 65 and older. researchers say heart attacks can be brought on by infections like the flu, but the post pandemic spikes are unlike anything they have seen. covid appears to be a trigger and accelerates pre-existing coronary artery disease even in young people, and that compounds with social stress with the pandemic. it's with the timing of covid surges and not with the boosters. >> the timing of the spikes is in timing with the surges of infections with the different waves caused by the different variants, and not the time when most people received their

vaccines. >> that doctor also says that covid appears to make the blood more sticky and prone to clots and causes inflammation inside the blood vessels, so that creates a blood pressure issue. i am not a doctor, but they think that now having covid or a reinfection of covid will be a risk factor. >> overall there are things we can do, preventative measures that all us can take. >> that advice never changes. women, people of color also are more at risk of heart disease, so exercise and get sleep, reduce stress and take your blood pressure numbers seriously. if they are high, that's a thing. it's not, like, oh, everybody has high blood pressure. >> get out and exercise and keep that heart healthy. >> walk that dog. >> i do every day.

overall it's going to be a nice weekend for the beach, but, yes, still very cold. we are also looking at temperatures in paso robeles today. a significant cool down on saturday as we see a system dropping in there. big changes ahead across the bay area as well as across the region over the next few days. we will talk about what that means for the bay area. mike, looks like a smooth commute? >> yeah, but we are hearing about a crash around 880 and stevenson. we will look at that. the south bay, 101, there's a slowdown. we do see orange instead of yellow so that means a little more significant volume, and it's subtle but it could be an issue for that bigger commute. over here this could be an issue for your weekend drive, not your

right now at 5:42, as you are heading out the door if oakland, it's 45 degrees. it will be a cloudy start but sunshine is headed back to the bay area today and our temperatures will be the warmest of the week. we will talk about a cooldown and where we may see rain in the forecast, coming up. we're looking at the golden gate bridge where they picked up the cones and the volume is picking up now. the camera moving around a little bit, so there's a little breeze but it's on top of a tower. on the road, everything is steady. this morning pennsylvania's new u.s. senator is back in the hospital, but a spokesperson said he's doing just fine. you may remember health concerns around john fetterman. he was readmitted to the hospital yesterday after feeling light headed. initial tests did not show evidence of a new stroke but doctors are running more tests

and john will remain overnight for observation. he's in good spirits and talking with his staff and family. president biden continues to tour promoting the union labor and the economy. >> now he's off to florida. >> yeah, florida this morning. the president lost florida in the last election, but it was pretty close. he won wisconsin, and that was very close, too. he repeated themes in the state of the union, the economy is strong, and the plans washington has for rebuilding infrastructure will create union jobs made with american materials. >> unemployment is at a 50-year low. gas prices are down and we are going to make sure oil companies are playing their role and it will go down further. manufacturing is rebounding at the fastest rate in almost 40

years. the economy is going on a solid clip. the biden economic plan is working. >> biden is accurate on those numbers, but there are two problems. the problem for him, many americans say the president is not handling the economy well, but there are record job numbers. and we don't want the economy to do too well, and it's the central bank's job to slow the economy down to get a handle on inflation. inflation is easing, but the economy is surprising us with new records. here's a former candidate for the governor, and he says rates need to go higher. >> i, too, was surprised by the big jobs number. it tells me we are not seeing an imprint on our tightening on the labor market. there's some evidence there's an affect, but it's muted.

following that, not bidding on it. >> yeah. >> i will take a gift if anybody is thinking about it. >> today is thursday, and we always get our drought monitor update. good news? >> yeah, not any worse, and we are still seeing major improvements after all of the heavy rain we had to start out the year. we are getting a closer look at our drought situation, and we have seen abnormally dry conditions that was definitely improved after all the rain in santa cruz, as well as the sierra that has been dry, and we have a high amount of sierra snowpack there. our air quality is getting a little worse as we are getting some of the high pressure pushing that air back down to the service, and all of the

pollutants we are putting out there is not mixing out very well. santa clara valley will have the worst of the air quality today, and we will see this system sweep through tomorrow and not only improve our air quality but also for some spots bring a slight chance of rain. the highest chance of rain will be late tomorrow evening, and there may be quick-moving showers around sunset. then on saturday morning we wake up to some cloudy skies, but there also may be a lingering shower in parts of the north bay. as far as how much rain we could measure here, some spots in the east bay may not see anything. that could also be possible in the north bay. it's once again going to be so spotty that some may get some rain and other areas may see it just briefly. we are going to see things drying out as we go towards the weekend as early as next week.

we were watching another system that was bringing the potential for rain on valentine's day, and even now that looks like it's drying up for us here in the bay area. we are not looking at any significant rain chances in the forecast for at least the next seven days. our temperatures are starting out on a high note, but we are about to ride that roller coaster back down to the upper 50s for saturday. then it does warm up for sunday and then back down by the middle of next week, so a lot of changes with our temperatures, but not much in the way of rain chances. mike, now things changed at the bay bridge. >> yeah, the metering lights were turned on a little over ten minutes ago, and the backup forming since then, extending from the metering lights through the toll gates and backing up in the middle lanes. a true to form typical thursday. we did see an early volume that seemed higher. a little build right here for
