morning. we will have more on our midday newscast at 11:00. it's a cold start but a nice almost 70-like finish. spring keeping in a little bit. thank you for starting your day with us. the "today" show is coming good thursday morning. rescuers racing against the clock to find people still trapped in the quake zone. >> and against all odds, we are seeing new miracles this morning. it's february 9th. this is "today." ♪♪ signs of hope.(g more survivors being pulled from beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings overnight. but the death toll still climbing. more than 16,000. those rescue operations reaching a critical point, three full days after that historic earthquake. just ahead, one of the americans working on the front lines will join us live.

with the desperate search for survivors in turkey and syria, even as the death toll climbs past 17,000 people. >> but there are signs of hope. some rescues still taking place more than 72 hours after those devastating earthquakes. in a moment, we will talk to an american helping in those efforts. but first, nbc's kelly cobiella joins us from hard-hit turkey. hey, kelly, what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you, hoda. you can see the impact of the quake around me. there are about a dozen buildings all around me here that just pancaked when it hit. and despite the power of that quake, rescuers are still morning.just a couple of hours finding survivors this morning. just a couple of hours ago, a 60-year-old woman was pulled alive from the rubble in turkey. but experts say once we move beyond that crucial 72 hours, which we have now done, the chance of finding people alive is fading.

overnight, using bulldozers and buckets, working in freezing conditions, rescuers in syria pulling more survivors from the rubble. while in turkey, this little girl lifted through the ceiling of a collapsed building by israeli rescuers. the crowd cheering as she's freed after being trapped for more than 60 hours. this dog, its back legs trapped, freed by rescuers. every life worth saving. but tragically, for many, waiting for loved ones ends like this, in grief and tears. this father holding his dead daughter's hand, too distraught to leave her, as recovery teams try to remove her trapped body. more than 19,000 killed so far with the death toll expected to continue rising. this morning, the state department confirming three americans are among the thousands killed in turkey, not identifying them, saying we offer our sincerest condolences. american rescue teams are now on

the ground with search dogs and heavy equipment, helping to dig through the rubble in turkey. across the disaster zoeb, countless buildings and homes are too dangerous to stay in. forcing hundreds of thousands to stay in shelters or out in the open with temperatures into the 20s overnight. >> we are not safe because some apartments are cracking. >> reporter: this beautiful mosque almost completely destroyed. only a few outer walls remaining. >> oh, oh, i'm so sorry. >> reporter: this woman devastated. she's staying in the hospital with her 6-year-old granddaughter, rescued just hours after the quake, but two other grandchildren died, she said, and her home is destroyed. i have nothing, she told me. the turkish president touring the disaster zone wednesday, vowing to rebuild, as many here are saying their good-byes and

trying to survive. international aid is arriving here in turkey this morning. and the u.n. says aid trucks are finally moving across the border from turkey into northwestern syria, into that rebel-held area this morning. the u.n. special envoy for syria saying they urgently need everything. hoda? >> yeah, kelly, seeing that grandmother in your arms was heartbreaking. thank you so much for that report. >> it's a desperate situation there. one of the americans working in the quake zone joins us now, john morrison, a search and rescue team member for usaid. sir, i know you just arrived. what's the plan here? hopes do fade after a certain time, but i know your team is hopeful that you will be able to make some rescues? >> good morning and thank you for having me on. we certainly are optimistic that if there is people trapped in the rubble here where we are right now, we will find them. currently, we have several recon teams out right now, looking through collapsed buildings, as

you can see from the video, trying to locate survivors with both technical search elements, such as cameras and listening devices, as well as our search k-9s. >> you can understand how people have survived, like concrete slabs could fall a certain way and there are air pockets. how do you physically go about it? do you have the equipment and everything you need? >> we brought actually about 170,000 pounds of equipment between all of the rescuers here, as part of the disaster assistance response team for usaid. that is there not only to set up the base camp that you see us finalizing behind me, but also medical equipment, heavy breaching and breaking for concrete, and logistics equipment. anything we can possibly need to be "a," self-sufficient, and "b," help the people we come upon. if we do find people trapped in the rubble, no matter how long it takes, we'll certainly work as hard as we can to get those people out. >> i know it was a long journey to get there. you took a 12-hour bus ride across the countryside. can you put into words what

you've seen? we've seen the pictures. it's certainly horrendous, but can you put into words what you've seen firsthand? >> it's definitely widespread destruction. the people are very appreciative, but this is what we train for. on behalf of the residents here. we've been to disasters around the world, and this is what we train for, and we're ready to handle the situation. >> good luck with your work. it's so important. thank you to your team and for you for being with us this morning. >> thanks, john. breaking overnight, here at home, powerful storms spawning tornadoes across the south. al's tracking a new threat of severe weather. we'll have his forecast in just a moment. but first, we have nbc's sam brock. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. it is an active season. 168 reported tornadoes in january that is the highest figure, in modern history for that month. and now the south has been struck again. i'm here in louisiana, this is one of about 15 buildings that

has been damaged. you can see the carport is collapsed. the roof sheared right off. there is debris littered everywhere, on trees. you're seeing mobile homes just crumpled. in one of them, an infant and a toddler had to be rescued as a likely tornado ripped right through here. overnight, severe weather slamming the south. >> from our bedroom window, you could see the chairs blow this way. >> reporter: a possible tornado, tearing through southeast louisiana, taking aim at tanghippeau parish and leaving at least three people injured. homes and businesses in the area sustaining major damage. >> just from looking in this area, it looks like about six or seven homes that are completely flipped over and completely destroyed. >> reporter: a massive police presence helping clear streets and provide assistance. crews springing into action, sawing through tree limbs to clear roadways. part of this gas station collapsing. workers huddling for safety inside, as the structure came

crashing down, falling on to a car and landing just feet from fuel pumps. out on the road, motorists maneuvering to avoid splintered tree limbs as ominous storm clouds blanketed the skies above. in neighboring mississippi, multiple apparent tornadoes downing trees and damaging this pickup. and in arkansas, significant flooding in some areas after hours of rain. the state dealing with heavy downpours wednesday, with more than 4 inches of rain reported in some spots. >> there was pretty much water all around the entire house, about an inch away from the door. >> reporter: one good samaritan coming to the aid of a fellow delivery, after he spotted her car submerged in a flooded ditch. >> noticed someone was inside the car and knew that my truck had the potential of pulling her out. >> reporter: the threat of tornadoes this morning has diminished, but the same storm system is still moving east now with the florida panhandle directly in its path. there is no power here this morning, and officials are warning people that live in the area that some of these power lines could still be active.

back to you. >> sam, thank you. we have al here. he has a check of the storms, where they're headed. hey, al. >> it's a two-pronged system in that we have winter weather to the north with winter weather advisories into kansas. to the south, we have that frontal system. we have the risk of severe weather up into the ohio river valley and also down into lower gulf, isolated tornadoes, damaging winds and hail. tomorrow, that moves to the southeast, as sam mentioned, the florida panhandle, parts of southern georgia as well for isolated hail. a low tornado risk, thank goodness. but the other thing we're worried about around this system, very, very strong winds. 49 million people under high wind warnings and high wind advisories all the way down into the south and on up into western new york. look at some of these wind gusts. columbus could see wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. st. louis 43. buffalo, 60-mile-per-hour winds. at that point, you can see trees coming down, power lines, as well. we'll be watching that. rainfall amounts down through the gulf and on into the southeast.

some places could be picking up 3 to 4 more inches of rain already over saturated ground. and then to the north, as far as the snow around the u.p. of michigan, 2 to 5 inches of snow. also as you get into parts of northern maine and parts of northern new england and interior parts of new york state, guys. >> al, thank you very much. president biden is back on the road today, taking his post-state of the union blitz to a key battleground in the next presidential race. nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker has the latest for us. hi, kristen, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah, good morning to you. president biden is hitting the road again today, heading to the key swing state of florida, which is of course home to two of his potential 2024 gop rivals, former president trump and the state's governor, ron desantis, all as the president is still clashing with republicans and grappling with the fallout over the classified documents controversy. one day after addressing the nation, president biden was out on the road in the midwest, testing his message.

>> the backbone of this nation is strong. and i've said so many times, often told to democrats and to republicans, we can actually work together. >> reporter: but the president doubling down on his accusation that some republicans want to cut medicare and social security. a claim which prompted a backlash during his state of the union address. >> i'm not saying it's a majority of you. >> reporter: with conservative marjorie taylor greene calling him a liar. in wisconsin, mr. biden firing back. >> marjorie taylor greene and others stood up and said, liar, liar, reminds me of liar, liar, house on fire. >> reporter: in an interview with pbs overnight, the president asked about those interruptions during his speech. >> did you expect that kind of reaction? >> from the folks who did it, i was. the vast majority of republicans weren't that way. but the -- there was -- there is still a significant element of what i call the maga republicans. >> reporter: he also noted that

republican senator rick scott had proposed cutting medicare and social security last year. >> he says, all federal legislation sunsets every five years. if a law is worth keeping, congress can pass it again. social security and medicare. >> reporter: most republicans, including gop leaders, oppose cuts to those programs. scott calling the attacks a dishonest move from a very confused president. house speaker kevin mccarthy also lashing out. >> he tries to use that for a political ploy. >> reporter: meanwhile, the president also speaking out about the classified documents controversy in that overnight interview. >> the kind of things they picked up are things that from 1974, stray papers. there may be something else i don't know. >> reporter: mr. biden aiming to shift blame to those who packed up his office from his time as vice president. >> as they packed up my offices to move them, they didn't do the kind of job that should have

been done. >> reporter: now, one more headline to tell you about from that interview or not, the president was asked if his age gives him any concern about running for re-election. he would be 82 years old on election day. his response was, quote, watch me. but he also added he would be honest with the american people if any health issues arise. so, savannah, all signs pointing to another run for office. savannah? >> including the geography of this trip this week. kristen, thank you very much. to the battlegrounds he goes. >> there he goes. all right. 7:15. we have a story about the airlines. >> hoda, savannah, welcome back, by the way. and good morning to you, as well. southwest airlines meltdown during the busy holiday rush, that's going to be front and center on capitol hill today. a top executive facing tough questions about the more than 16,000 flights that were canceled in the build-up to christmas. you'll remember this. a lot of angry travelers. nbc's capitol hill correspondent, ryan nobles joins us now with more from washington. so, ryan, good morning to you.

what should we expect to hear? >> craig, good morning to you, as well. nbc news has obtained the prepared opening statements of the southwest ceo, andrew waterson, where he's expected to tell lawmakers very plainly, quote, we messed up. waterson also expected to say that the company is working hard to learn from the mistakes they made that led to thousands of customers being stranded in airports across the country with little guidance from the airline as to when their flights would be rescheduled. waterson will lay much of the blame on a cascading group of factors that began with an unpredictable weather pattern that turned out to be much worse than they expected. he'll also tell lawmakers, while it never went down, this debacle revealed issues with their software that schedules and reassigns pilots, flight attendants, and other crew members. he's also going to admit when the storm disrupted the traffic out of their two most critical bases of denver and chicago midway, that they, quote, did not have enough resiliency in our operation for the severe effect that this winter event had on us.

the airline will also promise in the hearing to make right by their customers by issuing refunds as soon as possible and getting customers back their lost baggage. we expect the members of this committee to use real-world examples from their constituents to show how the company's failures impacted so many people across the country. craig? >> we would expect quite the grilling there. ryan, nbc -- ryan nobles, thank you so much. let's go back to al and get more of that forecast. >> we could see a few showers and strong storms down through the gulf. that could lead to some airport delays. also, some light snow making its way across the upper midwest, on into new england. for today, a rockies chill and some snow, sunshine. warm conditions down through texas and the western third of the country looking spectacular. we're going get to your local forecast coming up in the next u 30 seconds. . forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds he nutrition that gil needs, but at the same i don't want him to get bored. it's been tricky to find the balance.

>> call your next witness. >> reporter: just moments after prosecutors called their 38th witness for the high-profile murdoch murder trial, yet another spectacle. >> ladies and gentlemen, we have to evacuate the building >> reporter: a courthouse evacuation ordered by judge clifton newman spurred by an anonymous bomb threat. the crowd rushed out and across the street as bomb-sniffing dogs moved in >> that was really, really scary. >> reporter: about two hours later, the threat cleared and trial resumed, as prosecutors continued to build their case that murdaugh killed his wif and adult son in 2021 to divert attention away from his suspected financial crimes murdaugh's former paralegal, annette griswald, testified that she grew suspicious over a missing check, totaling nearly $800,000 >> in the back of my mind, you know, there's this huge red flag >> reporter: when confronted by the firm's cfo, murdaugh

insisted that it was in a trust. about three months after the alleged killings griswald found the check in her office the next day, murdaugh was fired from the firm. she testified that weeks later murdaugh sent her the apology text >> the most part is knowing i did the most damage to those i love the most. >> reporter: griswald became the fourth witness to confirm murdaugh's voice in a video his son, paul, recorded minutes before he was killed >> and how sure are you? >> i'm 100% sure >> reporter: debunking murdaugh's claim that he was not at the scene during the murders. meanwhile, the defense continues to paint murdaugh as a family man. >> he put family first at work, did he not >> most of the time, yes >> and he encouraged you to put your family first? >> absolutely. >> reporter: his attorneys als argued that the gun residue could have been there for years. >> there's no way for you to know when the gunshot primer residue was deposited on the blue rain jacket >> that's correct. >> so if consumer took possession of that garment four

believe it is the covid vaccine that causes heart issues, no covid itself >> covid itself, there's such a high risk of getting a heart issue from covid, especially myocarditis. when you look at the statistics, you're 11 times more likely to get it from covid itself than you are from the vaccine when it comes to heart attacks, there's been no direct connection between the vaccine and heart attacks. there have been some reports, but those reports are usually someone who had a heart attack the day after getting the vaccine, which means the vaccine hadn't even had time to do anything in the body >> it is so interesting to see that covid has an impact on heart health, that's regardless of age, but more pronounced in this younger group can you explain that >> in the elderly, you have more heart attacks overall, but the rate is increasing in this younger age group and years ago, when the pandemic first started, three years ago, we started it as a respiratory virus, then we realized, it could be a vascular virus. we know it affects the blood vessel linings themselves.

we talk about the inflammation and stress that goes behind this it is not a cold it is a bad virus. >> interesting, there was that young athlete who said she had mild covid systems symptoms not even like she had devastating covid symptoms does it matter if you have long covid versus mild symptoms >> that's one of the other things, it doesn't seem to matter at all. part of it is your immune response, which can keep covid under control, but at the same time, it could be overwhelming the system and causing these heart-type issues. the other thing we don't know how long you are at risk for this as she mentioned in her piece, it could be something 10 to 20, 30 years from now, do you smoke, have high cholesterol, covid those are your risk factors for a heart attack >> it's not like you have covid, you recover, and the next day these heart events happen. there can be the passage of time >> there can be the passage of time and with long covid being a bigger and bigger issue, we don't know the more you have covid, it puts you at a higher risk, especially in those young adult ages at getting something like you want to make sure, even if you're vaccinated, you still protect yourself from getting covid, which means, the things we know that can help us
