a new challenge in the search for survivors, this as the number of deaths grow. we'll also show you how one group of bay area students are doing their part to help. >> and speaking out. the relatives of the local baker, they have a message. after her death after a robbery. this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, and online. >> a very good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's start with a look at the forecast. kari is tracking what we can expect. >> a little bit of rain but definitely cooler temperatures. we're going to see some changes over the next few days. unfortunately, that beautiful weather that we enjoyed yesterday is quickly coming to an end as we get a look at our commute across the san mateo bridge. it is all clear right now and we are going to to see our temperatures starting out chilly once again, headed for the upper 30s and low 40s.

we are starting out at 33 degrees in santa rosa and san francisco at 47, across the bay to oakland much cooler, 41 degrees. but then as we take a look at our high temperatures, most of us will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s. we'll see more clouds moving in and parts of the bay area may want to make sure they're prepared for rain. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you were hearing about an incident in pleasant hills. >> we just caught a glimpse of flashing light in the service lane west 92. we'll follow up on that. we're looking at pleasant hill where 680 northbound, the off ramp, exiting, there are reports of a big rig that was disabled. it looks like everything cleared in the last few second and there's no slowing on the sensors. shouldn't be a major issue as you're traveling north. that's opposite your commute, which would be highway 4 down to 680. no slowing on highway 4 or 37.

those are usually one of the first two to show slowing in the bay area commute. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the man accused in the deadly shooting rampage at half moon bay mushroom farm will be back before a judge this morning. >> that suspect has not entered a plea. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of the courthouse in redwood city. what are we expecting to learn today from the hearing? >> reporter: good morning. this hearing is on a motion before the judge here at superior court behind me in redwood city. we're not clear yet on what the motion is. we are trying to figure that out. hopefully we'll know within an hour or two. chunli zhao is the 66-year-old man accused of shooting and killing seven people last month at two mushrooms farms in half moon bay and injuring another. next thursday he is scheduled to enter a plea to several charges, including murder. he'll be before a judge this

morning. that is not the plea hearing. this is a separate hearing on a motion. zhao admitted in a jailhouse interview that he committed those fatal shootings and afterwards he drove to the sheriff's substation to vendor. zhao says he endured years of bullying, combined with long hours and issues were never addressed. he was spurred to to commit the shootings after his supervisor demanded he pay $100 for a forklift. zhao says he believes he suffers from some sort of mental illness and wasn't in his right mind. this past tuesday the city of half moon bay approved an emergency declaration and an executive order establishing the victims fund to support the individuals and families impacted by these shootings. 100% of that money raised will go to the victims, none of it will go to administrative fees. reporting live in redwood city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of details there. thank you very much. new developments this morning in the violent robbery

of a popular oakland baker. the victim, jen angel, has died after doctors took her off life support. angel was robbed on monday. this was in the parking lot of a wells fargo bank. she was injured when she chased those thieves and was dragged some 50 feet alongside the car. angel owns angel cakes bakery, which loved ones say will remain open. they are asking anyone who wants to support the small business to buy gift certificates and continue going there. they also say that she was a social justice activist and community leader. they added in a statement, quote, if the oakland police department does make an arrest in this case, the family is committed to pursuing all available alternatives, such as restorative justice. all of angel's organs will be donated for medical use. we're getting new details at a big drug bust out of the east bay. take a look at what the alameda sheriff's office posted on its facebook page. it says a task force seized 168

grams of amphetamine, more than 2,500 counterfeit pills and nearly 10 grams of cocaine. four guns were also found at the oakland home. investigators seized evidence that fentanyl was being manufactured there. there's no word on when the bust was made or how many arrests were made. we are reaching out to the department to find out more. news of the bust comes as people gathered to talk about dangers of fentanyl when it comes to young people. the final of four town hall meetings by the unified school district took place last night. school leaders say it's important for parents to know how to talk to their kids about drugs and keep them safe. especially amid the rice of counterfeit sales on social media. >> people that sell counterfeit pills and pills that are made to look like prescio medication, oxycontin, things

that you would have prescribed to you, they are laced with fentanyl and kids are buying them not knowing that that is in the pill. so it's like they're being poisoned. >> members of the fairfield police department, solano public health leaders and drug safety advocates took part in last night's meeting. we are learning more about the devastation by the earthquakes that hit the border of turkey and syria. just this morning another aftershock hitting turkey, a magnitude 4.6. here is a look at the recovery effort going on in turkey four days after the deadly earthquakes hit. miraculously, rescues are not over, with some survivors still being pulled from that rubble alive. while stories of these incredible rescues briefly lift spirits, the grim reality of the hardship facing tens of thousands who survived that disaster cast a dark reality. more than 21,000 people have been killed. back here in the bay area, university students at cal are

the other at the alameda county public works agency in dublin. taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. let's move along with a look at the forecast. kari, yesterday was so beautiful. are we going to see a repeat? >> it will be sunny at times but definitely not as warm as it was yesterday afternoon. so we do have to keep the jacket on throughout today and you might even be able to lose the sunglasses by this afternoon because this system is moving closer and will bring in more clouds for the afternoon, and even some spotty showers. in the north bay we will have the highest chance of seeing this rain coming through later this evening. it's going to be off and on throughout early tomorrow morning and that chance of showers starts to diminish tomorrow afternoon. we'll talk about how much rain and cold temperatures to follow in a few minutes. mike has a look at numbers of a different source.

we're looking at nothing below 4 bucks in san francisco county. marin county, the top number is lucky service on sir francis drake. it's $3.99 in san anselmo. concord has $3.89 at costco on monument boulevard and there are a number in that range in that area. best in the bay for the great gas, consistent all week, in they're closing the week at $3.79. started at $3.69, ended at $3.79. the roadways, take your commute early if you can, early in, early out. highway 4, no early slowing. it's light, a friday. we do have a crash eastbound at loveridge. you see the rails are moving fine. highway 4, no delays. antioch bridge, all the way to concord, and there's an issue at north 680.

no slowing as you pass by but it is westbound across the san mateo bridge. we're watching for the reports. whatever is out there, we've got it coming up. happy friday to you. paypal in san jose says its ceo will step down at the end of the year. workday in the east bay is getting some criticism for spending, presumably, millions of dollars on a super bowl ad, even after it laid off hundreds of employees. this is the ad. the pleasanton-based company blamed the layoffs on a challenging global economy, but less than a week later posted this to youtube, featuring rock stars ozzy osbourne and billy idol. they say the decision was part of a multi-year plan and the company says it's important to make sure they're set up for long-term success, which includes investing in strategic areas of business. >> a number of other layoffs to tell you about. yahoo laying off 1,600, github

laying off, just as importantly, shutting down its office in san francisco. a lot of companies shutting down, selling office space. the new york times podcast "the daily" yesterday ran an episode called the emptiest downtown in all of america. san francisco, the city has fallen behind other big american cities. yesterday in her state of the city address, san francisco mayor london breed acknowledged these businesses are not coming back. now, san jose may be faring better. there's an interesting article in the "san francisco standard". i talked to the reporter who wrote it, kevin chung. >> san francisco has seen a massive decline in its office occupancy rate. its vacancy levels are nearing 30%, much higher than even in the dot com boom and the great financial crisis. and san jose and silicon valley has seen the vacancy rates

[ laughter ] let's get a look at the forecast. >> it's the weekend. we're seeing the big change in the weather department here. it was so nice and sunny yesterday, and today it's going to be cooler and cloudy. take a look at our highs for this afternoon. reaching into the upper 50s in hayward, 59 in mountain view, and also 59 in oakland and the north bay. upper 50s for today. we compare that to the upper 60s and low 70s yesterday.

let's check in on our reservoirs. they are still very high. even though we haven't had a decent amount of rain in the past couple of weeks, we're still seeing some of our north bay reservoirs at 99% of capacity. remember during all of the heavy rainfall, many of them were peaking at over 100%. take a look at the coyote res sore, at half of its capacity, but at the peak it was 100%. and. we're at 197% of the normal sierra snowpack for this date and when we stretch it out to april 1st, we're still at 135% of normal. but we are going to see some additional light showers in the forecast, especially for the north bay, spotty off and on rain starting this evening at 6:30 in the morning as the sun is rising.

some spots may deal with rain and we see that shifting into the south bay by late tomorrow morning. the rest of the day is dry. but as far as how much rain we could see, this is not a big widespread heavy rainmaker, but some spots in the bay area could get one-tenth of an inch. once that moves through, we're back to the dry conditions and weakening storm systems as they approach. another slight chance on valentine's day, and then behind that we could see next friday, the rain staying off the coast. so overall we're looking at a mainly dry forecast. spotty showers here and there. our temperatures are going to be cool over the next few days and only warm up slightly for sunday into monday, and then back down once we get toward valentine's day. it's also going to be windy, too. we're going to have a chilly weekend, but at least for the most part saturday afternoon and sunday is going to be clear. mike, you were concerned for a crash on 580. even though it's opposite your commute, it's not going to be a major issue for the speed

people in one part of san francisco's sunset neighborhood. this is after a deadly explosion and fire. the big question from neighbors at this point is how did it happen. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us there this morning. are firefighters learning anything about the cause of this explosion? >> reporter: you know, it is going to be a long process, but you know how compact these houses are here, especially in this neighborhood, and this street is still blocked off because the investigation continues. it's just not safe for some of these folks to come home. this is what the street looked like just after the explosion happened about 9:20 yesterday morning. one person was killed. another person was sent running for help. the victim was found eventually in the rubble of that collapsed home by specially trained dogs. this is a home on 22nd. it was 9:20 when this happened,

so there were plenty of witnesses, including one woman whose car windows were shattered in the blast. >> the lady that was living in the house came running out and she was half charred, the back side of her body was charred. >> she was pointing and yelling. >> it was just the window that exploded. >> and then it fell onto the car? >> fell onto the car. >> reporter: now, one firefighter was also injured in the fire fight. it went to three alarms at one point. following the fire, some people in neighboring houses could not go home for the night. others were only allowed to stay if they had power and if they committed to sheltering in place, because the scene is still pretty unsafe. that building just absolutely demolished. we're going to keep asking questions of san francisco fire and we'll tell you what we learn. in san francisco, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> still a lot of questions there this morning. thank you. >> we will continue to follow this developing situation on air and online. you can find the latest at

nbcbayarea.com and as well as get some alerts once we get that information on our free nbc bay area news app. parents at diablo view middle school are being informed with a racially charged incident. a letter says one student handed out cotton balls to other students to mock black history month and other students apparently took part. the superintendent says the student thought of it as a joke but has since been discipline. the district added it is committed to fighting bullying. covid cases trend downward but deaths remain high. the average deaths is averaging 500 a day. u.s. is reporting 309,000 cases and more than 3,900 deaths from thursday february 2nd to thursday, february 9th. the seven-day case average dropped to 44,000 daily infections. an unusual hunger strike is drawing a lot of attention this week in the south bay. navneet aron is a home developer

who stopped eating one week ago. the reason for this, he says, is the city of sunnyvale is halting his work on a construction project involving the building of 18 town homes on fair oaks avenue. the city says his company forgot to get county approval on using a particular plastic design to limit health risks and will not allow work to go on until the approval the granted. he believes the red tape is getting in the way of honest work. >> it's extremely frustrating, painful, downright devastating. yeah, so i had no choice after my team was trying to work with sunnyvale for quite a bit, as well as the county. it seems like it could take two months, three months. >> the city tells us aron plans to submit his paperwork as soon as today, and once that happens, the city should grant the green light once the county approves.

san jose is among the 15 safest large cities in the country according to an annual report from money geek. it takes a look at crime statistics from the fbi and 263 cities with populations of more than 100,000 people. in addition to san jose, san diego and santa ana made the list. oakland is among the top 15 most dangerous cities in the u.s. and the only one listed in california. every city on that list had more than 300,000 people living in it. so it is 5:37 this morning and are you ready to grab a cold one? i'm going to say hold off just a bit, but today starts the beginning of sf beer week. >> you can plan your weekend. the event is way more than a san francisco thing. for the next ten days, from beer festivals to tap takeovers, bay area beer enthusiasts will be celebrating craft beer. organizers say breweries and restaurants will host hundreds of events. it gives enthusiasts a chance to

degrees with sunshine. let's kick off the weekend tonight in oakland with first fridays. it's going to be a cold one. temperatures in the low 50s to start. and then as we go into the evening upper 40s with a mostly cloudy sky. you want to make sure you're wearing layers in napa if you're going to the light festival. the lantern parade will be tomorrow evening and it's going to be 56 degrees at 5:00. suns the sun sets, those temperatures drop into the upper 40s. across napa valley we'll see temperatures mostly in the upper 50s but the morning starts will be very cold, reaching down into the mid-30s. if you're going along the coast and headed to big sur this weekend, it's going to be 61 today, but only 51 tomorrow. not so great for those pictures with the off and on rain coming down and a lot of clouds. but saturday, definitely a lot more picturesque with a high of 63 degrees and a mostly sunny

capitol police officer, eugene goodman. he led the charge up the interior stairs to be met by goodman who directed the crowd away from the lawmakers. >> the special counsel put in charge of investigating donald trump's alleged involvement in that has subpoenaed vice president mike pence. all of that is kept closely under wraps. we don't know what information jack smith is seeking. >> a select group of members of congress will give a secret briefing on the chinese spy balloon. the congressional intelligence committee did learn some details. yes, it was a spy balloon and, yes, we were able to gather important intelligence from it. but they still have questions. here is the head of senate intelligence committee mark warner. >> we need to make sure that there is a game plan for these incidents as opposed to what appears in this case to be a bit of an odd hok reaction. >> so it doesn't happen again? >> ad hoc reactions are not the way to address this issue.

she's got to get it right. >> the weather will be perfect there. >> i bet the dancers are, like, come on, make up your mind. >> five, six, seven -- >> we're watching for it all. we're ready for the weekend. the weather does get cooler. not the perfect outdoor weather but i think we'll take it. we won't have to deal with rain on sunday. and we're seeing a few more clouds starting to move in. as we zoom into the south bay, it's definitely going to be cooler today compared to yesterday. we were hitting the low 70s yesterday. today morgan hill will reach a high of 62 degrees, and 58 degrees in cupertino. for the east bay, mostly upper 50s and up to 60 in pleasanton, while oakland will see a high of 58 degrees. and some mid-50s for the coastline, parts of the peninsula. redwood city reaching a high today of 57 degrees. also upper 50s for san francisco, the mission district reaching 58. for the north bay, a high of 57 in santa rosa, and a little

cooler around ukiah. tonight we're back down into the upper 30s and low 40s, but we're also going to be throwing some rain in the mix. we'll start to see scattered showers moving in at about 4:00 this afternoon for parts of the north bay. so you just want to keep that umbrella handy just in case. not everyone will see that rain moving through. but when we do see it, it could last for a few minutes, it may briefly be heavy. it's mostly coming through late tonight. by tomorrow morning at 11:30, we're seeing it pushing through the south bay and clearing the bay area for sunshine for tomorrow afternoon. as far as rainfall totals, most of us getting very light amounts of rainfall. but it may be as much as a tenth of an inch around half moon bay, as well as in ukiah. going after that, we are going to see a couple of dry cold front moving through, although there may be spotty showers on valentine's day. it looks like the storm weakens before it gets here, but we are going to have a significant cooldown in the forecast.

as we take a look at livermore going from mid-60s from sunday into monday, so only low 50s for the beginning of next week. so big changes ahead. just not a lot of heavy rain in our near forecast. mike, you're seeing changes at the bay bridge toll plaza? >> we expect to see this start to back up a bit because the metering lights have been activated. lighter traffic looks like what's going on and it's friday. that's expected. but we just had reports of a crash at the end of westbound 80 right at 101 near octavia. any time anything happens on that side of the bridge, they would then activate the metering lights to slow traffic so they can clear this crash. no major injuries and no major slowing. the build at the toll plaza is inevitable. tri-valley is fine. a crash going on eastbound, but westbound, both are moving smoothly. the south bay shows your typical slowdown on northbound 101 and there's a crash just off of 680. not affecting the on or off
