fire, and online. we're live. good friday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. it is friday. >> fri-yay. >> we're very close to the weekend. practically a weekend. how is the weather shaping up? >> it looks like it's going to be changing a lot. yesterday was so nice. today, yeah, we have fog, it's cold, and it's going to turn cloudy. but we're still going to enjoy it. visibility is down to a quarter of a mile in novato as the fog drifts around. that's one of the main concerns as we are seeing temperatures in the mid-40s. it's 38 degrees in mountain view as you get ready to head out the door. take a look at these high temperatures. it once again won't be as warm as yesterday but we're still hitting 60 degrees in san jose and upper 50s for much of the rest of the bay area. cooler for the weekend. i'll have more on that and where

we may see rain coming up. the bay bridge toll plaza, the metering lights were activated because of an incident in san francisco. i believe that the crash, which sounds like a pickup and another sedan should be cleared quickly. we have a crew that has to arrive before they can give us an update and i think it may have cleared. a build on the incline but nothing dramatic. in the east bay, we have a little slowing for 880 through hayward, but more importantly, we have a pothole reported on the 238, the connecter from 580 off the castro valley y. if there's a traffic break, that will cause a backup coming off of the dublin grade and out of castro valley. so far, no word on any road work and nothing south of there. the man accused in the deadly shooting rampage at the half moon bay mushroom farm will be back before a judge this morning. so far, the suspect has not entered a plea. >> "today in the bay's" bob

redell live for us outside of the courthouse in redwood city. what are you learning so far about today's hearing? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. we know there is a motion before the judge that will be taking place at a hearing here at the superior court at 10:30 in redwood city. we're not clear what the motion is about or what it is requesting. chunli zhao is the 66-year-old man who is accused of shooting and killing seven people last month at two mushroom farms in half moon bay and injuring an eighth person during the mass shooting. next thursday he is scheduled to enter a plea to several charges, including murder. zhao admitted in a jailhouse interview that he committed these fatal shootings and afterwards he drove to the sheriff's substation to vendor. zhao said he endured years of bullying, combined with long hours working and that those issues were never addressed. he says he was spurned on to commit the shootings after his

supervisor demanded that he pay $100 to repair a forklift damaged at work. zhao told janelle he believes he suffers from some sort of mental illness and was not in his right mind the day of the shootings. this past tuesday the city of half moon bay approved an emergency declaration and an executive order establishing a victims fund to support the individuals and families impacted by those shootings. 100% of the money raised will go to the victims and no administrative fees will be taken from that fund. reporting live here in redwood city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. 6:03 right now. new developments this morning in that violent robbery of a popular oakland baker. the victim, jen angel, has died. this is after doctors took her off life support. angel was robbed on monday in a parking lot of a wells fargo bank. she was injured when she chased after the thieves and was dragged some 50 feet alongside that car. angel owned angel cakes bakery,

which loved ones now say will remain open. they are asking anyone who wants to support the small business to buy gift certificates and continue going there. they also say that she was a social justice advocate and community leader. they add in a statement, quote, if the oakland police department does make an arrest in this case, the family is committed to pursuing all available alternatives, such as restorative justice, end quote. all of angel's organs will be donated for medical use. we're getting new details on a big drug bust out of the east bay. take a look at what the alameda county sheriff's office posted on its facebook page. it says a task force seized 168 grams of methamphetamine, 23 pounds of powdered fentanyl, more than 2,500 counterfeit pills of the dangerous drug, as well as nearly 10 grams of cocaine. they also found four guns at this home in oakland. investigators also seized

evidence that fentanyl was being manufactured at the residence. there's no word on when the bust was made or how many arrests were made. we're reaching out to the department to find out more. news of this bust comes as people gathered in the north bay to talk about the dangers of fentanyl when it comes to young people. the last of four town hall meetings in the unified school district took place last night. school leaders say it is important for parents to know how to talk to their kids about the drug and, of course, to keep them safe. especially amid the rise of counterfeit sales on social media. >> people that sell counterfeit pills and pills that are made to look like prescription medication, oxycontin, percocet, some things that you would have prescribed to you, and they are laced with fentanyl and kids are buying them not knowing that that is in the pill. so it's, like, they're being

poisoned. >> members of the fairfield police department, solano public health leaders and drug safety advocates took part in last night's meeting. we're learning more about the devastation caused by earthquakes that hit the border of turkey and syria. just this morning another aftershock hitting turkey, a magnitude 4.6. here is a live look this morning of those efforts in turkey just four days after the deadly earthquake hit. they're still working hard. miraculously, rescues aren't over, with some people still being pulled from that rubble alive. while stories of these incredible rescues briefly lift spirits, the grim reality of hardship facing tens of thousands who survived the disaster cast a dark reality. we do know now that more than 21,000 people have been killed. back here in the bay area, university students at cal are coming together to help people in turkey. the turkish student association at uc berkeley has been collecting resources and handing out flyers for donations every

day on campus. the group teamed up with turkish airlines to ship warm blankets, clothing and other necessities as temperatures continue to drop. >> we are packing it in bags and sending it with a plane and an ngo is meeting them and sending it to the region. >> and if you would like to help, we've made it easy for you. you can find ways to contribute. we posted a link with information on charities raising money and sending supplies overseas. head to nbcbayarea.com and click on the link in our trending bar. in alameda county, two disaster recovery centers will open for recent storm victims. fema is helping organize the centers which offers resources to businesses and people who live with damaged property. the center will open in oakland on oakport street and the other at the alameda county public works agency in dublin. in the meantime, leaders in capitola have approved a request to hold a storm benefit concert.

all proceeds will help those impacted by the recent storms. the beyond the flood benefit concert will take place next saturday at noon in capitola. it is 6:07 and let's take a live look at a beautiful shot in downtown san jose, just outside of the s.a.p. center. let's look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. yesterday people say we were spoiled. >> i wouldn't say spoiled because we only had it for one day. we have a cold front moving in. we can see the long lines of clouds and rain off of the coast as it approaches the bay area. later on this evening we could see some rain holding together long enough to produce some downpours in parts of the north bay. here we are at 3:30 in the afternoon and we see some of the green indicating rain. but we see that as it moves through parts of the north bay

into san francisco, the rain dissipates and dries up. but there still may be a spotty shower or two before you wake up tomorrow morning and head out for the day. it does start to taper off around noon for the south bay. we'll talk more about how much we could see coming up and mike has a look at how much gas will cost you right now. san francisco county, we couldn't find anything below 4 bucks, at least not reported by gas buddy.com. lucky service on sir francis death is the low in san anselmo, $3.99. concord, $3.89 at the costco. and best in the bay, great gas in cupertino. all week, the best in the bay area at $3.79. on the roadways, a smooth drive for the most part. we'll look at the bay bridge where we had a crash in san francisco. that has cleared but we're waiting for the full clear from

rafael to the golden gate bridge where the traffic is smooth. looking at no major issues. i did put the wrong label up there. i was listening to your report. this is from san rafael across the golden gate bridge with the headlights into san francisco. good morning. happy friday to you. paypal in san jose says its ceo will step down at the end of the year. workday in pleasanton in the east bay is getting criticism for spending presumably millions of dollars on a super bowl ad, even after it laid off hundreds of employees. the pleasanton-based company blamed the layoffs on a challenging economy but less than a week later posted this ad on youtube, featuring rock stars ozzy osbourne and billy idol. in a statement, workday says its decision to do the ad was part of a multi-year plan. the company says it's important to make sure it's setting up for long-term success, which includes investing in strategic areas of business. >> a number of other layoffs to tell you about.

yahoo laying off 1,600 worldwide. github is laying off and shutting down its san francisco offices. it will be a remote-only company. a lot of companies in san francisco selling office space. "the new york times" podcast "the daily" ran an episode calling san francisco is emptiest downtown in all of america. the city has fallen behind all other big american cities in recovery. yesterday in her state of the city address, san francisco mayor london breed acknowledged those businesses are not coming back. >> san jose may fare better. there was an interesting art cool in "the san francisco standard" why san jose stayed resilient as san francisco stumbled. i talked to the reporter who wrote it. >> san francisco has seen a massive decline in its office occupancy rates. its vacancy levels are nearing 30%, much higher than even in the dot-com boom.

valentine's day, a bay area comedy show "mortified" holds its doomed valentine's day shows in san francisco and oakland. it sounds like it's kind of funny. >> it's a story-telling show where adults read aloud diary entries during their adolescents. >> the following entries reveal a lovesick 15-year-old who had the heart of a poet. >> scott lipton is the show's producer and says that he could not possibly make this stuff up. he said he actually gets help -- he helps those non performers curate the best, shall we say, worst stuff. >> in "mortified" they don't have to memorize anything and they win over the audience being vulnerable and the audience resonates and i think that makes it pretty unique. >> that could be pretty fun. this weekend's show revolves around questions of obsessions

yesterday was so nice and warm. but we're going to see changes. i first wanted to check on in our reservoirs. after the heavy rain earlier in the year, in january we had our reservoirs in many spots overflowing. but we are seeing some of them come down. in marin county, 99% of capacity on average and for east bay 97% of capacity. the coyote reservoir went from its peak at 100% in mid-january to now 50% and the uvas reservoir still at 100% after it did overflow during the rain. we're also seeing a really high sierra snowpack that's double its amount for this date. even if we don't get any more snow, we'll finish with 135% of our normal sierra snowpack. we've had dry weather but we are watching a weak system approaching and we'll go from our all clear sky that we're seeing right now in san jose and

our temperatures being held down as more clouds move in late morning into the afternoon. we'll be in the upper 50s, eventually reaching the low 60s today. but then we turn our attention to what the radar looks like. storm ranger will be tracking rain at 4:00 for parts of the north bay. we see that moving in in spots. it's not a solid line of rain, it's not widespread rain. it's going to be very hit or miss. but where we do see it hitting more will be the north bay between this evening and early tomorrow morning. you may even wake up to hearing some rain hitting the roof before the system quickly passes and moves out of our area for tomorrow afternoon. we are all clear for sunday, any outdoor plans you have. we're just watching out for the chance of quick-moving showers between this evening and early tomorrow. after that, we're seeing more dry weather in the forecast into next week. but it's just going to be really cool. in fact, our mornings may dip back to near freezing for the end of next week.

temperatures held up a little more there compared to the 33 that we have in santa rosa, where it's mostly clear. we'll see high temperatures instead of the upper 60s and low 70s reach into the 50s today. we'll talk about the changes for the weekend. mike, you've been watching the east bay. >> pleasant hill, it's a roll of carpet on 680. watch that. there may be a quick traffic break. we see slowing on south 242. that's a traditional spot as folks cut the corner. a smooth drive for the rest of the bay. not necessarily a magic carpet ride because we have backups like the bay bridge toll plaza. mid parking lot for most lanes. we see a little build coming off the castro valley y and the same thing, sunol out of pleasanton for 680 and 101 may be slowing,

but there's an incident near the 880 interchange. we'll check that out. it's been a tough nearly 24 hours for people in one part of san francisco's sunset neighborhood after a deadly explosion and fire. the big question at this point is how did it happen. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us this morning there. >> are firefighters learning any more about the cause? >> reporter: they're still looking for the cause and the investigation still continues. the roadway is still blocked off and you can see fire trucks near the home that is nearly demolished all the way down to the ground. we'll show you video of this was it was happening or shortly after yesterday morning, 9:20 or so. one person died in this blast and this fire, and sent another running for help, another person was sent running for help by the fire. the victim found in the rubble of the collapsed home by specially trained cadaver dogs.

this is a home on 22nd avenue. it was about 9:20 in the morning when this unfolded and there were plenty of witnesses, including a woman whose car windows were shattered by the blast. >> the lady in the house came running out and she was half charred, the back side of her body was charred, hair curled up. >> she was pointing and yelling. >> it was just the window that exploded. >> and then it fell onto the car? >> fell onto the car. >> reporter: so that woman was seriously injured, another woman or person died. a firefighter was injured. following this three-alarm fire, some people in the neighborhood could not go home for the night and others were only allowed to stay if they had power and if they committed to sheltering in place, because the street is still very busy with investigators and with firefighters. the red cross is assisting all of those people who have been displaced. in san francisco, kris sanchez,

deaths from february 2nd through february 9th. san jose is among the 15 safest large cities in the country. that's according to an annual report from money geek. it takes a look at crime statistics from the fbi in 263 cities with populations of more than 100,000 people. in addition to san jose, san diego and santa ana also made the list. oakland is among the top 15 most dangerous cities in the u.s. and the only one listed in california. every city on that list had more than 300,000 people living in it. it is 6:36 in the morning. it may be too early, but are you ready to grab a cold one? if so, this week is great for you because this is sf beer week and it starts today. >> the event is way more than just a san francisco thing. for the next ten days from beer festivals to tap takeovers, bay area beer enthusiasts will be celebrating craft beer. restaurants and specialty bars will host hundreds of events. it gives beer fans a chance to

upper 50s and it just so happens that beer week starts during super bowl weekend. so we have first fridays, we're going to kick off our weekend here this evening and you do need the layers because those temperatures drop very quickly. we're going from low 50s at 6:00 to upper 40s at 8:00 to 9:00 tonight. and for the napa lighted art parade, the lantern parade happening this weekend, as soon as the sun sets and the lights start to come on, it's going to get much colder. dipping tomorrow evening into the upper 40s. if your weekend plans take you along the coastline, once you get to big sur it's going to be in the low 60s today. nice and sunny, but clouds continue to move in with a chance of showers tomorrow. we are clearing out for sunday with a high of about 63 degrees. if you're hitting the roads to tahoe this weekend, watch out for snow showers throughout the day on saturday. we have a couple of incidents in the south bay.

overall lighter traffic, 101 showing slowing. this connecter from south 101 to north 880, it's got an issue on the connecter. there may be a disabled vehicle or perhaps a minor crash. no slowing shows up. we're tracking southbound 680, a car went off the roadway and might have hit a small tree. the activity will be a distraction, no lanes are blocked. all lanes will be blocked northbound 680 traveling through sunol over the weekend. this time it's all day saturday, all day sunday. it will clear by monday morning's commute. that will be going on this weekend, next weekend and the following. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive. the ride on the rails this weekend, we will have no access for cal tran between millbrae and san francisco. we're working on an electrification project. coming up, president biden is going to meet with another president with whom he has a lot in common. the big board this morning on this friday, the dow industrial is doing okay.

downtown and for the north bay, in the low 60s for clear lake but upper 50s for novato. not a huge spread in temperatures, but we're going to see it dipping at this long line of clouds ahead of a cold front sweeps through today. it starts in bring in clouds and spotty showers. here we are at 4:30, we're seeing rain in parts of the north bay. that's going to start to move into much of the rest of the bay area later tonight and early tomorrow morning. but not everyone is going to see this rain and it's also going to be in and out of here fairly quickly. so by tomorrow afternoon it's clearing out. in all, we're looking at, maybe, a tenth of an inch of rain, while most spots will measure a few hundredths of an inch. it's just enough to wet the lawn and then we go back to dry weather. possibly a weakening storm system on valentine's day but it's going to make temperatures chilly. and we're still not seeing a significant chance of rain here in our seven-day forecast.

spotty showers here and there. look at those temperatures. we are going to be very cool over the next few days. in fact, in the mornings next week, we may still be freezing in our inland valleys, and very cold in san francisco as well. mike, you're hearing about a head-on crash? >> yeah, this is just off 580, greenville and patterson, sounds dramatic. details are starting to come in and it sounds like it might have been a glancing blow, cars on opposite sides of the freeway. we're looking at 580 through the area, that's just fine. this would be for folks taking city streets just south of 580 itself. south of that area, in the south bay, 101 and 87 start to show a build. the earlier crashes we tracked off of south 680 and south 101 to 880, they've held steady with their reports and no slowing shows up on the sensors. easy drive through contra costa county and the maze. the backup is at the toll plaza
