preventing it. so joining us now, dr. icilma fergus, the director of cardiovascular disparities at mount sinai hospital good morning. >> good morning. a pleasure to be here. >> we like having an expert in the house because you're going to give us the top tips. the first thing you say is never overlook the numbers what do you mean by that >> never overlook the numbers. knowing your blood pressure. knowing your blood sugar and knowing your cholesterol numbers. never forget those your blood pressure should be between 110 and 130 over 70 to 80 you should have a fasting blood sugar of less than 100 you should know your good cholesterol. that's the only one you want to have high, above 50. and the ldl, the bad cholesterol should be less than 100. >> so know those numbers what about age age is a number. what's your advice there >> age is a number but listen, savannah, never assume you're too young to have heart disease. in fact, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, can have heart disease.
8:37 am
it does get, you know, more sort of serious as you get older, but never think that you're too young to have heart disease. >> another one, never minimize your symptoms. that's something that a lot of us do, oh, my stomach hurts a little bit it's problem nothing it will go away. >> absolutely. never minimize those symptoms. and you know, women's symptoms may be different than men, than what you see in the textbook, but if you don't feel yourself, the phase of tiredness, fatigue, tightness, shortness of breath, never minimize those call someone for help. especially maybe 911 if you think it is going to be a heart attack. >> and the next tip you have has to do with stress and anxiety. what do you say about that >> never let stress and anxiety get to you there are a lot of ways to mitigate stress and anxiety. we do know that since the pandemic, a lot of people have had more stress, more anxiety in their workspace, et cetera but there are ways to get around, that like exercising, like
8:38 am
hydrating, and ensuring that you get enough sleep never get, never get too much sleep, but also, don't get too little sleep. >> i mean we all know stress isn't good but is there really a true correlation between stress and anxiety? >> oh, absolutely. >> and heart health? >> oh, absolutely. with stress, you can have what's called increase in your sympathetic nervous system where you have increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and also the cortisol levels can increase, and that is not good >> all right our next tip, you say never ignore preventible habits. what do you mean by that >> oh, yeah, so you know, i never say think that you can get away with say drinking too much coffee, not exercising, not getting enough food, not getting enough rest. but also, eating processed foods, yesterday was the super bowl. >> a lot of processed foods happened yesterday. >> yes. >> these are the things that you got to do. minimize alcohol, you say. obviously avoid smoking. these are the things you have to make sure you do and never overlook the family history. >> never overlook the family
8:39 am
history. the family history is so important. you know, knowing your family history, you can get started earlier at managing those risk factors. knowing your blood pressure, we talked about the numbers before, but knowing if uncle sam had a sudden cardiac death it may help to you get into the doctor earlier, and get those preventive testing mechanisms. >> the screening kind of get that baseline, even if you're young. >> that's right. >> all right doctor, thanks for joining us. appreciate it. more tips how to help prevent heart disease on our website today.com. hoda, over to you. all right, coming up next, savannah, we are catching up with the star who is having a moment she is having a moment outer banks. and many, many more things madelyn cline is with us we're exci

a splash in "glass onion" and this morning we can exclusively reveal that madelyn cline is our next today.com cover story more on that in just a moment. but first, let's take a look at the new season of "outer banks" where this time the treasure hunting teams find themselves trapped on a desert island check this out. >> do you see that >> see what? >> a boat. >> a boat where? >> 11:00 just under the horizon >> i think it's just the white caps >> you don't know. it's right there i see it >> what if - >> no, it's not. it's not your brother, okay? i promise. >> oh, my gosh i'm totally into this. first of all, welcome. congratulations on everything. what a thrill for you to do this. >> i know. >> this project. tell me about that. >> "outer banks" is always a thrill we always deliver.
8:43 am
every season, i swear it feels like i -- it feels like it should be impossible to heighten it and raise the stakes but we do it somehow and this season delivers, so i'm - >> i'm just so happy to be sitting with you >> i'm happy to be sitting with you. >> i feel like, i was reading about you. you went, your parents wanted you to go to college, you went to college, did you all of the things you were supposed to do and partway through college, you just said i'm go, this is not working for me, what did mom and dad say when you said you decided you were going to try something? you would try acting >> partway through college, gave me a lot of credits, it was like six weeks, i dropped out before midterms so all of my professors thought i was laze and didn't want to study, and didn't want to study, which i didn't, they were partially right they have always been very, very supportive i think they were very terrified though because i didn't really have any other backup plan
8:44 am
it was kind of like, you know, that moment in "almost famous," where his mother says, my child has been kidnapped by rock stars and i think that's what they thought when i moved to l.a. >> well you did. i just interviewed steve harvey and the way to be successful is never have a plan b, you have to only have a plan a did you struggle with, and we've all had this, i've had this in my career, too, where you kind of feel like an impostor like you feel like what am i doing here, how did i get here, do people believe i should be here, do i believe that? >> i still feel that way i feel like that's a, i think about that, like even today, i was up at like, i don't know, 5:00, and i had hair and makeup happening in my room and who do i think i am and even going on the "today" shoot, i felt so excited that everybody was there, for me, and with me. it's very, very exciting >> how do you get your confidence >> if i knew
8:45 am
i mean i think it's a lot of times fake it until you make it. daily. >> tell us about the today.com cover shoot. fun. that is really cool. i was reading that, too, it was just fun. >> it was fun. >> in addition to everything else. >> fun it was so fun. the team is so much fun. and we, i mean they were just jumping on the bed and we ordered champagne, and i was trying to do dry january, didn't really count for me. >> as we call it around here damp january. >> damp january, thank you it was amazing it was so much fun and i'm honored. it's so cool >> what is it like in your small town, the town you grew up in south carolina i mean, what did they say about the girl from there who made it big? >> i think, i've seen some comments i've been tagged in some like she's from goose creek, and you know, i don't know it's very quiet-ish, it's growing. we have a starbucks now.
8:46 am
and you know, it's very quiet. i always get culture shock when i go back because the pace is so much slower, but it's always nice to go home. >> it's interesting because you're learning about being a celebrity through being a celebrity. and you talked about, i think of the today.com article that you were dating someone you were co-starring with, and you decided after that, you guys broke up, that that's not something that you're going to talk about later on. what did you learn from that experience >> i learned how much i value privacy and anonymity and how much that means to me and how much keeping things for myself means to me. >> that's really important how about "knives out" how about that that's like a dream role. >> i know. oh, god, "glass onion," that was an experience of a lifetime, that summer, is just like, you know, obviously the cast is so incredible
8:47 am
and ryan is amazing, such an incredible director, and a brilliant person, and just i mean shooting in greece, twist my arm. >> you are sitting in the middle of a brilliant time in your life when do you think your parents were the proudest of you >> i don't know. i think, well, i know they're proud. i know they're watching this right now. >> oh, they are? >> they were just texting me i think they're really proud that i chose to do something, and i just put all my eggs in that basket, and i did it with reckless abandon >> well, they raised you right >> yes thank you. >> madelyn cline, thank you so much we appreciate it we will be watching your career i know for a long time thanks for coming to see us. >> thank you >> what are your parents' names? >> pam and mark. >> pam and mark, thank you you can stream "outer banks" season three starting february 23rd head to today.com to check out the full cover story

8:51 am
"glamour" editor chief samantha berry here with the editor of some trends that she thinks everyone should try in 2023. good morning good to see you. >> good to see you >> i'm always nervous to follow a fashion trend because you could become a fashion victim. >> totally it's nice to know what is happening. in hair, we're both fashioning the new style in hair. >> who knew? tell me the first hair trend that is big in 2023. >> bangs and bobs. >> bangs and bobs. >> you've got the bangs. >> bangs, i think for people who want to change up their hair a little bit, it is an easy in i advise doing it during cold weather. you don't want to have bangs during the middle of the heat of summer emily in paris got bangs wednesday has bangs, everybody else has bangs >> and this short bob, with haley bieber >> haley bieber. >> you just got the chop. >> i didn't know it was trendy. >> bobs are really in. and another way for people to change their look. i highly recommend, i've seen people on tiktok cut their own
8:52 am
bangs and bobs i would recommend if you make a change, start with a professional. >> go to a pro. >> longer and then shorter and make sure you're doing the style for the texture of your hair. >> i think so because it is with shorter hair and bangs can be kind of hard to style. >> exactly. so take it easy. >> inch by inch. >> exactly >> the next trend, i can't believe it, press-on nails >> press-on nails have been around for a long time. >> a long time. >> we've seen a massive spike in 2023 and one of the reasons they have much better quality and much better in design and much safer on your nails. and they also are less commitment, right? so let's say you want to try some valentine's heart nails or try the trends in chrome or metallic, you can try it with press-on nails >> is it glue or tape or how is it >> there is glue and there's tape and there's different versions and it is really a natural fake nail and they have come a long way since the press-on nails in the '80s. >> i remember the '80s nails i haven't tried them since but it looks exciting and i may have to try it. i can't believe the ballet flats are back
8:53 am
that is like 2000, right >> we know that fashion is a cycle. and all things come back in fashion. this has been really driven by the ballet core, in fact, and it is divisive, to be fair, i think it depends where you live as well i'm not a ballet flat in manhattan type of girl but there's lots of different versions and now what you're seeing in 2023, is yes, those ballet flats you saw in the early 2000s but there's platforms, there's these lovely lace, and they're added. i would like height with my ballet flats >> i'm not sure i'm ready for it this is the new y2k style coming back >> y2k is back it's not going everywhere. we saw it in late 2022, we saw the '90s fashion and now coming into the early augh. and red carpet and dresses and jeans on katie holmes, and anne hathaway wore a page boy hat did you wear any of these? >> the page boy hat, yes
8:54 am
what do we have? the colorful jewels, yes shiny patent leather >> divisive, again one thing that is back is a lot of combat jeans and cargo jeans but low rise jeans, i don't want to go back >> it is tough >> and the canadian tuxedo. >> denim on denim. this is cute but the denim suit is questionable. denim. think about britney spears and justin timberlake at the vmas in the early 2000s, lots of variations on denim and denim and they're on etsy and things that you and i wore, they are probably buying them on etsy. >> the dress over jeans. i do think that's a cute fashion. how do you do it you have to do it right. there is a high degree of error. >> i wore a lot of dress over jeans back in the day. >> in the day.
8:55 am
>> it didn't surprise me necessarily because we saw the 2000s come back, but katie holmes took the dress over jeans and brought it back on to the red carpet and i think that was a big fashion moment we haven't seen everybody embrace it yet but i think you're going to see lots of different variations of dresses over jeans have you done the dress over jeans? >> i did a dress over pants, late '90s, with the chunky heel, sitting at the coffee house, bemoaning your terrible boyfriend. >> yes. >> weird girl styles this is the thing. >> weird girl style is an aesthetic. and we're talking about a lot of trends and weird girl style is not a trend, it's a mind set. >> like porsche from "white lotus." >> yes porsche from "white lotus" and angela - >> a couple of models modeling weird girl styles. >> weird girl styles a lot of it is, some of it is, anchored in japanese street style, and it is really about the individual and more is more, and layering and mixing areas so
8:56 am
you're mixing maybe a corset from something from the early 2000s and about the individual style and taking your style and adding more. >> i guess if i want to rock this, i shop my 8-year-old's closet and she probably has a bag like that. you kind of do it. you do you >> yes >> thank you to our cute models. we're back with the "third hour of today" just ahead but first, a check of your local news and weather and these messages oakland police commissioners are planning to take control of the place involving chief armstrong, who has been on administrative leave duet to the
