this afternoon. spotty rain also possible into the evening, with the gusty winds starting to relax just a bit and cold temperatures settling in tonight. so we're only going to reach into the low to mid-50s today and we'll see more temperatures like this. but it does get slightly milder tomorrow. we'll see the sunshine returning. then the upper 50s, low 60s for the next few days. but tomorrow morning as you're getting up and heading out, much cooler than what we're feeling right now. in the south bay, parts of the sought county, the tri-valley into the north bay could start out below freezing. that's the reason why we have a freeze watch in effect for wednesday morning from 2:00 to 9:00 a.m. we'll see the temperatures cooling quickly tonight. and then as we move ahead for the weekend, there will be some storm systems very close to the coastline, but it looks like a lot of that rain stays offshore. we do continue with dry weather but chilly temperatures in the forecast. a little bit milder for the

weekend. we'll take a look at brentwood, temperatures reaching into the upper 50s the next few days and then mid-60s for the weekend into early next week. our seven-day forecast shows the gusty winds, spotty rain and only 53 degrees. we reach into the upper 50s but it's going to take a while before we see 60s back in the forecast. the weekend is looking very nice. san francisco, a lot of 50s over the next few days and at times gusty wind and also very cold mornings ahead. as we turn to our climate in crisis, we look at how ocean surface temperatures affect weather patterns. you may have heard of la nina and el nino having a huge impact on weather patterns, especially in the winter when we get our rain and snow. for la nina, sea surface temperatures are colder than normal and cold ocean means less evaporation, less clouds, building in that area, and it also affects the jet stream that
4:48 am
carries the storm systems around the world. right now we're in our third year of a la nina pattern, each with varying effect on how much rain we get because of the position of the jet stream. in el nino years it tends to be the opposite. so we see the sea surface temperatures creating more evaporation, more clouds, and a very active storm pattern, which means more rain across the southern u.s., and the bay area kind of being on the very edge of that subtropical jet, so it could go either way. with new data from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, it's revealing that as global temperatures rise, el nino events may boost that warmth even further, possibly creating more extreme droughts or rainfall events around the world. the outlook for the coming fall is for el nino to develop. you can check out impacts on

4:50 am
start to soak that up or is it kind of a lifetime of learning? >> oh, gosh, it is a lifetime of learning. and i think, first of all, when we're talking about love, we're talking about so much more than romance and affection. we're talking about friendship, giving and receiving, and opportunities to be really engaged in a healthy relationship between partners. >> how much of this goes hand in hand with showing what empathy is to a child? >> i think we really need to talk about love and empathy as relational. in your heart authentically, are you present, are you engaged, do you truly understand the inner world of your child? and it begins even before that moment when the child needs empathy. it begins in the smaller moments when we're connecting with our kids and building that relationship over time, so that
4:51 am
our children know that they can really trust what we say and what we do. >> and i think it's reflective of putting down our devices, and i know we get so busy, a lot of working parents as well. but when we can put things aside and speak directly to our kids, showing even that simple act of love, of you care about what they have to see or how they're feeling, isn't that important as well? >> you hit the nail on the head. really taking time to engage with your kids, screen free, distraction free, and most importantly, taking the time to get to know them. asking questions without judgment, waiting to hear the answers. and this part is important, too. parents really forget to do this part. it isn't just about interviewing your kid and getting to know them. they need to see that you're showing up as a full human in those interactions, too. so a loving relationship depends on you, also sharing parts of
