degrees by sunrise and then, as we go into today, we are going to see definitely much more sunshine than we had yesterday, as we reach into the low 60s here. mid to upper 50s for the tri-valley, but some low 60s for much of the north bay. overall, fairly pleasant but you do need a jacket. we'll take a look at our warmer weekend forecast in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing slowing on one of our bridges. >> it's not the bay bridge, but in the middle of our screen here we have eastbound slowing showing up on 84, reports of some sort of road work going on and there's a disabled vehicle. the slowing sensors are eastbound, which oftentimes happens about this time as crews move. we also have slowing showing up eastbound on 92, the san mateo bridge. we don't see any problems. the live look shows you traffic coming from the peninsula to the east bay. a bigger volume westbound, which is the tradition, and both directions are at speed. back to you. >> thanks, mike. oakland's former police

chief could speak out as early as today, after the city's newly elected mayor explained why she decided to fire him. >> pete joins us live. it sounds like the mayor isn't backing down from the decision. >> reporter: good morning to you. oakland mayor sheng thao is definitely standing by her decision. she expressed that in a one-on-one interview with nbc bay area. as you mentioned, the former police chief may be responding to all of this shortly. he may be doing it as early as today. during this one-on-one interview she did with raj mathai, she said she fired the former chief leronne armstrong after reading this independent report that she says hurt his credibility to do the job. oakland police have been under what they call a federal monitor for 20 years. the newly elected oakland mayor, she wants to bring that monitor to an end, but supporters for the former chief armstrong say he is their best shot at making that a reality. here is the mayor explaining her

decision to fire the former chief, as well as some of armstrong's supporters speaking out about his firing. >> in the independent investigative report i think that it is short sight if we are not paying attention to what the investigation found and those are serious sustained allegations around what is actually -- it's what i see as a systemic problem inside of the police department. >> they took the only person that made sure we were getting to the finish line and took him away. >> reporter: okay, now, the former chief did release a statement earlier yesterday afternoon saying that his termination was a fundamentally flawed process and that there were unfair accusations about him. now, the mayor said her focus is on a nationwide search for a new police chief for the city of oakland. as i mentioned, we could hear from former chief armstrong as early as today.

reporting live for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, pete. 5:03 right now. fremont's first homicide of the year is under investigation. police say that two men got into an argument that turned deadly. it happened at the intersection of paseo padre and stevenson boulevard around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police say they arrived and found the man lying on the ground. we did speak with employees at a nearby gas station who believed it was a stabbing. >> i've never seen something big like this before. we have small incidents, but nothing like this. >> officers arrested the other man at the scene. happening today, the man caught on camera spraying an unhoused person with a hose outside a san francisco business is scheduled to appear in court. police arrested him last month. he's charged with misdemeanor battery and is set to be arraigned this morning at 9:00. if convicted, he faces up to six months in county jail and a

$2,000 fine. san francisco's chinatown, dozens of business owners, some of them who have been there for decades, are getting hit with unexpected fines by the city. among those citations, about store awnings and gates. the city's department of building inspection says it has received 187 anonymous complaints about the awnings in the past three months. 62 have been dolled out. the agency says it is legally bound to investigate complaints. shop owners told us it is simply money they don't have to spend. >> you can see how quiet the street is. i don't think we can afford this. >> we really need the city's help to mediate. >> the complaints were focused in four neighborhoods, richmond, haight, tenderloin and chinatown. police are investigating thefts from ul ta beauty stores and discovered a fencing operation. chp organized retail crime task

force was looking into $6,000 worth of stolen goods taken from three ulta beauty stores in alameda county. they linked a car in connection with the thefts to a home in oakland. during the search of the home, officers found stolen merchandise valued at over $120,000, as well as guns and several high capacity magazines. new this morning, one of the piers damaged from recent storms is set to be removed permanently. the pier at sea cliff beach that leads to the imfamous ship will have its final good-bye. inspectors found it could collapse at any moment. a farewell ceremony will be held today at noon. anyone with a reservation can contact the state park for a refund. it is 5:06 this morning, as we take a live look in downtown san jose, just outside of sap

center. it's really nice looking out there. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect from the forecast. it seems like it's a little bit warmer. it might be warmer. that may spend more people near the coastline. you want to make sure you're being very careful. we do have a beach hazard statement that will be up, meaning that there could be more sneaker waves and rip currents and more erosion. if you do plan to head to the coastline this weekend, we're looking at highs reaching into the low 60s for santa cruz. it will be nice and sunny. we'll see low 60s for much of the rest of the bay area. we'll take a look at slightly warmer temperatures coming up. mike has a look at slightly lower prices at the gas station. >> slightly higher than we want. we usually go for things under 4 bucks. if you're making a getaway through the north bay, solano county has no reports below 4 bucks. i'll looking at diamond shamrock on north texas street, $4.09. that's the best we can do in

happy friday to you. it is 5:12. let's take you to the tri-valley with a live look at dublin. it's a clear but cold start, just a couple of degrees above freezing. and as we have this frosty start, it will be mostly a sunny day and our temperatures warm up nicely. we'll take a look at our sunny weekend in the forecast coming up. we're looking at the golden gate bridge where we had lights stopping a bit as they cleared the crews. it looks like all crews are clear. prepare for a possible slowdown

coming out of san francisco. we're not seeing much traffic build out of the north bay just yet. it's 5:12 right now. as we discover black heritage, we want to highlight a little girl now being honored for her efforts of trying to get rid of an invasive species. >> 9-year-old bobbie wilson is making headlines after she was wrongfully profiled while attempting to spray invasive lantern flies in new jersey and now yale university is honoring her. last october she set out on a mission to get rid of the lantern flies with her homemade bug spray in her hometown. her efforts were cut short when one of her neighbors reported her to police. that incident went viral and caught the attention of an assistant professor at yale. >> immediately i saw the video, i took it personally not only as a new jersey native or black woman, but as somebody who does this work. >> bobbie was invited to the campus and honored for her

that's when things get really cold and also maybe a little wet, too. let's get you ready for work this morning in gilroy, as you're heading out the door. it's only 34 degrees and we'll see these temperatures holding steady for the next couple of hours. but we are headed for more sunshine today, compared to yesterday. and it's going to warm up nicely. but we're seeing some spotty showers farther to the north. this is moving through ukiah, as well as coastal sonoma county. this is all a part of a system that's moving away from us. it's sliding down the coastline but also bringing in a little moisture. most of us won't see it, but we've been talking about changes ahead, how cold it's been. and that will continue into next week. the jet stream taking a bigger dip with some bitterly cold temperatures, and then look at what's happening in parts of the southeast. they're dealing with extreme warmth and that looks like that continues into next week as well. so when we see the cold weather

coming in,s moisture. so for the sierra starting on tuesday, some heavy rain will be coming down, heavy snow there. and there will be some spotty showers for the bay area. models are going back and forth on whether or not we'll see rain continue through the end of next week, but we are definitely midweek going to see some snow coming down and the possibility of some significant rain for the next several days going toward next wednesday and thursday, and then once again we'll see if that lingers into next weekend as well. here we are this weekend, we're focusing on that because the weather is going to be so pleasant. and presidents' day is going to be in the mid-60s and our warm weather lasts for a few more days before it gets really cold next week. mike says right now the commute is looking pretty smooth. >> it's pretty smooth and a lighter volume. we expect that on a friday, but we had a lighter volume yesterday as we were approaching a holiday weekend or week for

some folks. the south bay and peninsula, no slowing. we don't expect any problems. we're looking over here toward 680, earlier slowing has cleared and so have all the closures and lanes on northbound 680, that's reopened again. a reminder, it closes tonight for the entire holiday weekend, including monday. 580 coming out of the altamont pass, slowing, a disabled vehicle on the shoulder near north flynn road but not the same incident as yesterday morning and not as much of a distraction. lighter build coming out of the altamont, light traffic through the tri-valley and contra costa county as well. alameda county we're looking at eastbound 80, a disabled vehicle that is blocking your slow lane. there's more slowing that showed up over the last few minutes. reports are there's a trailer, not a tractor-trailer but a trailer, and they have to get a tow truck to pull it. a larger tow truck might have arrived. we will track this. back to you. >> sounds good. next here on "today in the

meteorologist kari hall has the friday forecast. >> it's starting out cold but not a bad afternoon. it's going to shape up to be a nice one as we get a look at some of the current temperatures that are pretty low, in the mid-30s right now. mountain view 34 degrees and 34 in livermore, just one degree above freezing in dublin, and it is freezing in san martin and gilroy, 35 right now in santa rosa. martinez, you're in the mid-40s now. it's going to cool down a few more degrees. it won't be as cloudy as yesterday and gradually we'll see temperatures warming up as we head for 62 today. still light jacket weather but we are going to have warmer weekends. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you have an empty trailer in berkeley. >> it's 20,000 pounds of empty trailer right here on the eastshore freeway, getting away from the bay bridge. now four lanes are blocked. there was just one lane blocked by the trailer. so the crew must have arrived with a larger tow truck.

i'm hoping the closure is just a temporary one and they'll be able to restore traffic getting away from the bay bridge. it's the counter-commute, so unexpected for folks traveling out of berkeley. the bay bridge toll plaza, very light traffic flow and light volume. the altamont pass, there is some slowing, but it's friday and pre-vacation, light for a lot of folks. >> thanks, mike. the man accused of a home explosion in sunset district is in court. >> the public defender requested an arraignment hearing be pushed back to today so that she can review materials in the case. investigators say the explosion killed rita price, who neighbors say was price's wife. the district attorney's office says hash oil was being manufactured inside the home on 22nd avenue. price faces seven felonies, including involuntary

manslaughter. his attorney says he plans to plead not guilty. the man police say terrified worshippers after entering a san francisco synagogue and firing several rounds of blanks is scheduled to be arraigned. the hearing was pushed back last week. surveillance cameras captured the incident earlier this month. he is charged with a felony hate crime and faces up to ten years in prison if convicted. prosecutors are asking he be held without bail. 5:33. affordable housing and child care are two of the biggest obstacles for people trying to make it in the bay. how to overcome them will be part of the conversation at the annual state of the valley conference in the south bay later today. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is joining us with a look at that report. the details strengthen silicon valley's economy, kris. >> the silicon valley index is an annual report put out and i want to show you some of the highlights. there are a lot of them. according to the report, silicon valley added 88,000 jobs between the middle of 2021 and the

middle of 2022, when unemployment hit an historic low. however, the data shows that black or african americans are being left behind as they file almost two and a half times the unemployment claims as white residents in silicon valley. that could be a factor in silicon valley's population decline, nearly 91,000 people left the silicon valley over the last two years, about as many as during the dot-com bust. onsing front, home prices went up 7%, setting the median home price at a record $1.5 million, pricing out 73% of first-time home buyers. 86% of black and hispanic residents, too. half of silicon valley renters say they are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. the median household is making -- the median household is making about $515 less at a time that child care costs are

outpacing if regional inflation rate. one year of child care can cost more than $29,000. santa clara county supervisor says that without affordable child care, parents leave the workforce, companies produce fewer goods and consumers pump fewer dollars into the silicon valley economy. >> it all ties back to this fundamental aspect of what makes an economic engine run, and as long as people have children, child care will be at the root and it will impact not only those who have children but everyone in the community. >> the state of the valley begins at 9:00 this morning. you can still attend in person or virtually. you can download that whole index if you would like to see all of the data for yourself at jointventure.org. i also put the link on my social pages as well. >> thank you. well, five former police officers involved in tyre

nichols' death are due to appear in court in about 90 minutes. the former police officers in memphis, they have been out on bail for a while now. nichols was left in critical condition after several of those officers punched, kicked, tased, pepper sprayed and hit him with a baton after he was pulled over on the suspicion of reckless driving in january. he died days later. the officers face a number of charges, including kidnapping and second-degree murder. today's court date comes as the bay area makes a renewed push to end police brutality. community groups held a candlelight vigil in front of san francisco city hall and demanded officers have accountability. now, the group said that it is also unhappy with san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins to drop manslaughter charges against an officer for the shooting keith of kita o'neill.

an officer shot unarmed o'neill during a carjacking. >> the police must be held accountability, just like any other employee or civil servant, if you fail to do your job, you must be held accountable. >> that officer initially charged by former d.a. boudin is the first san francisco cop to be charged for shooting on duty. happening now, the search continues for this woman who police say kidnapped her daughter. the toddler named tayana was found safe late yesterday afternoon in oakland, but the mother has not been found yet. her name is crystal mendez. she does not have custody. her ex-husband is actually tayana's legal guardian. if you see crystal, you should call san jose police. developing now, the head of an environmental protection agency is promising that president biden's administration will get to the bottom of the toxic train derailment.

it caused a fire and chemical spill in ohio. epa administrator michael regan met with residents yesterday. many east palestine residents returned to their homes after an evacuation order was lifted. still, others are staying away, fearing potential health dangers. state officials insist that the air quality is safe after several rounds of testing, but some residents aren't buying it. regan added there are mixed messages, especially after requests some people use bottled water. >> i think the messaging needs to be clear that the state has taken the lead on testing water quality and, like governor dewine said just recently, if your home has been tested, you can trust that data. if your home has not been tested, he is encouraging, the state is encouraging that people continue to use bottled water until their homes are tested. >> the "today" show will have a live report from the city. that's coming up for you at 7:00

right after us here on "today in the bay." a live look at highway 50 in south lake tahoe, looking clear right now. but it is the start of a holiday weekend and for many that means a trip to tahoe. chp says to pack your patience, along with those skis. they say traffic could be worse than ever. a lot of schools have all next week off for ski week and roads are still recovering after constant plowing from all those big winter storms. palisades tahoe says it even saw 400 inches of snow this season. >> monumental snowpack here, definitely driving people up here and there's so many fresh tracks to be made still. the resort opens at 9:00. i suggest people get here about 7:30. >> that's right, get there early. chp advising drivers to stay on the main highways, even if your gps says to take a back way. >> a lot of people are going to be heading up there. weather-wise it's looking good for getting there.

we have sunshine throughout the weekend and temperatures will be warming up. so we are looking at temperatures today headed for the mid-30s. those morning temperatures dip down into the teens. then for saturday and sunday, highs reach into the low 40s. even on monday the weather is still looking clear and sunny. but as i said, it may take a long time getting there and back because of so many people going. so if you're going to stay a little closer to home, check out some of the free museums that will be opening the doors this weekend. in san francisco it's going to start out at 54 degrees, so a cool start to the day on saturday, and then reaching into the low 60s for the afternoon. this is the last weekend of the napa lighted art festival and then as it wraps up on sunday, it's going to be mild through the afternoon. but as you settle in, walk around the downtown area, it's going to be very cold. temperatures dropping quickly into the upper 40s after sunset. and if you are planning to take a drive along the coastline, big sur is going to also be a

of technology. it's the screen on the passenger's side. i want to point out quickly, from the driver's point of view you can't really see the screen. >> that's on purpose because they don't want the driver to be, oh, what movie is that, while they're driving. >> you can kind of see it. i'll have josh walk around to the other side. this screen for the passenger allows them to do what? things the driver can't do. >> right. so you turn the screen on and the passenger has their own separate screen on this side of the car. so you can do things like control entertainment functions, you can watch a movie. you can actually search navigation destinations and send that to the main car's drive. >> you can back seat drive, essentially. >> basically. >> i haven't been to an auto show for years and i remember years ago the nissan leaf was the new thing. now electric vehicles are -- how much more common are they? >> quite common. >> this is a brand new one from toyota. >> this is a brand new toyota. this is a fully electric car. they're becoming more common.

california has one of the highest adoption rates of electric cars and right now it's about 6% of the overall market for the u.s., which means more people are buying them. they're still quite expenseive, but this shows there's a greater variety. they're not just install doctory hatch backs, suvs or performance cars or sports cars. >> what's the range typically for an all electric? >> this toyota has about 250 miles of range, 300 miles or more wouldn't be uncommon. >> and in the bay area i know we're early, a lot of charging stations. one thing in the midwest, because of the cold temps, you're not going to get the range. it dieness the cold weather. >> yeah, and it's the same with an electric car. if you're camping, what is your phone battery? because of the cold, it saps the battery energy, same with an electric car. we don't have that here. maybe once in a while.

>> i remember doing stories on hydrogen fuel cells and at the time, i'm, like, these things aren't going to be around. here we are in 2023 and this is still a thing? >> there are several hydrogen fuel cell cars. there's the toyota and also the hyundai. it's really an electric car, so it really works on electricity. you charge it up with hydrogen. it doesn't pollute. the only thing that comes out is water vapors. when you charge an electric car, it can take a while. hydrogen car, about seven or eight minutes to fill the tank. >> i'll go to the other side of the showroom. the show opens at 10:00 this morning and runs throughout the weekend. go to svautoshow.com. if you're in the market for a car, you don't want to deal with sales pressure, you can come

going to look much nicer. tomorrow, 60s in the south bay, san francisco reaching 60 degrees, and 64 in much of the north bay. on sunday, that warming trend continues. so hopefully you'll have an opportunity here or there to get outside and enjoy it. we are starting out, especially farther to the north, with some spotty showers around ukiah, parts of lake and mendocino counties. this is moving away from us as the system pulls its way offshore and we are not going to see much of an impact across the rest of the bay area. it's dry this weekend but things change next week. we'll start to see precipitation moving in. and i say precipitation because it may be a mix of rain or snow on the upper elevations, a lot of snow for the sierra possible, and even on our bay area peaks going toward the end of next week. so looking out the next six to ten days, our rain outlook is for well above average rainfall. and we'll see this wet pattern
