$1.53 million. pricing out 73% of first-time home buyers, pricing out 86% of black and hispanic residents. half of silicon valley renters say they are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. and the median household is making $550 less at a time that child care costs are outpacing the regional inflation rate. according to the childrens' council, one year of child care can cost more than $29,000. santa clara county supervisor says that without affordable child care, parents leave the workforce, companies produce fewer goods and consumers pump fewer dollars into the local economy. >> it all ties back to this fundamental aspect of what makes an economic engine run. and as long as people have children, child care will be at the root and it will impact not only those who have children, but everyone in the community.
