"today in the bay's" bob redell
6:01 am
joins us live from the scene. i know you've been out there since right after this broke. what is the latest, bob? >> reporter: you can see behind me, two investigators actually just went inside the home with redwood city fire department. they're trying to figure out what caused this fire. you can see the insulation from the attic that was pulled out. the elderly man who lived here is in the hospital being treated for life-threatening burns and possible smoke inhalation. he lived here with four other people at this house, which is actually an eldercare home. it's located on cypress street, a neighborhood not far from highway 84 and the el camino real. this fire started around 3:00. the fire department had to call for a second alarm, for extra help. the two caregivers and two other elderly people did get out okay, but when the fire department arrived the elderly man was still stuck inside in the back of the house. the battalion chief tells us
6:02 am
what happened next. >> they got inside, found severe smoke conditions, so pretty much blind completely as they went in. so they went in, we did get a report there was somebody still in the building. they went in looking for him and found him right away, got him out of there. >> reporter: the smoke was so thick, firefighters had to use an infrared camera to find their way through the house to find the man, who was in a bathroom in the back. he might have been trying to escape or find shelter from the fire. the chief says they were in and out in about two minutes. the two other residents were taken to the hospital as a precaution. there are two investigators. they did call for a second investigator to determine the cause of the fire inside the house. the battalion chief says initially this does not appear to be suspicious. reporting live in redwood city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the details, bob. we sent you a breaking news push alert on our free nbc news app
6:03 am
earlier this morning. you can download it and you can get updates sent straight to your phone. to our other big story, strong winds and cold temperatures causing major issues across the bay area and it is not over yet. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions, including that wind advisory we're dealing with. >> the bay bridge was a mess yesterday evening after that tree fell. we've had trees coming down all around the bay area. and you do want to make sure you're careful as you're driving to work. you may not be able to see some of those branches that have fallen overnight. we're still looking at gusty winds, especially near the coast and a lot of our hills. it's starting to calm down a little in the valleys. we're looking at off and on rain in the forecast at least into next week and we could also see some snow in the mix coming down to about 1,500 feet in elevation. and below that in some lower lying areas, it could be a wintery mix of rain and snow down to about 500 feet.
6:04 am
hail will be possible at times. we're still dealing with high winds from now through 9:00, high wind warning in effect. and then for the rest of the bay area, a wind advisory until 1:00 this afternoon, still looking at high wind gusts through the next several hours at about 20 to 40 miles per hour, even as we go toward noon. the wind could pick up more for the coastline, as well as the hills, as we could possibly see gusts to 50 miles per hour, at least into the next few hours. and then gradually starting to relax later on tonight. but you'll notice it's going to be much colder today and that cold weather continues in the forecast. i'll have another look coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. a toddler is now fighting for his life after those strong winds toppled a tree. it happened laugh night in boulder creek in the santa cruz mountains. first responders say the redwood tree came down, trapping six people, including that 1-year-old boy. >> the patient wasn't going to be able to be removed without
6:05 am
removing that tree. so we had crews on top of the roof and inside the structure in the living room where they were ultimately cutting away the weight and removing that off the patient. >> firefighters say that child was conscious and breathing on his own when they transported him to the hospital. he is now in san jose trauma care facility. no one else was injured. thousands of people across the bay area are waking up in the dark this morning. in fact, this is a look at the latest pg&e outage map. you see in the bay area so many people without power. pg&e just gave us an update reporting some 63,000 customers now without power right now. last night it was more than 100,000. the peninsula really feeling the brunt of it with more than 44,000 outages. south bay outages now number more than 12,000, compared to over 13,000 at 4:30 this morning. you can see comparatively the

rest of the bay area, there's just a handful. and, remember, if you are not at home, you can also stream us on the go, on roku, fire tv, and on our website, nbcbayarea.com. if your power is out, you can still watch our newscast live on our free nbc bay area app. 6:06, and one person is critically injured after being shot near a south bay high school. it happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon on rancho drive in east san jose. this is right near andrew pete hill high school. so far, there are no details about the victim, other than they suffered life-threatening injuries. and so far there's no word of an arrest. new details out of oakland where police are offering a reward to track down the hit-and-run driver who killed a man who recently turned 100. the man now identified, died at about 7:00 a.m. on sunday. that's when witnesses say a car struck him in a crosswalk at 19th and harrison streets and then, sadly, dragged him some 30
6:07 am
feet. opd is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the driver of this car, captured by surveillance images at the scene. it is a tan or white mini cooper. if you know anything, contact the department's traffic investigation unit. well, this is the second day in a row the supreme court will hear an important case about the internet. scott mcgrew is joining us right now. you call this one twitter, but you told me it's not just about twitter. >> that's the official court title, but the court uses shorthand on case titles. so twitter is the title, but et al, meaning, and others. so google and facebook are part of the and others. you could call this the google or the facebook case. at issue is a terror attack on a nightclub in istanbul in 2017. one of the victim's families says the terrorists were able to use social media to encourage each other in their terrorist
6:08 am
ways, and thus twitter was culpable under american laws that forbid people and organizations from helping terrorists. but, marcus, a lot of experts think the family is going to have a tough time arguing this in court today. it's not even clear the people who bombed the nightclub used twitter. >> the internet, it's so hard to figure everything out. i know you were telling me this is a second high-tech case this week. >> there was one yesterday and it didn't go very well for the plaintiffs in that one, either. this was about a terror attack in paris. the family said youtube's recommendation algorithm encouraged viewers to watch more videos that might radicalize them. they were arguing youtube is still culpable. the lawyer in that case for the family was very experienced, but really struggled as we listened to the audio of that case. the justices understood the technical parts, but they really
6:09 am
didn't follow his argument. timothy wu, a colombia professor who weighs in on tech issues said on twitter, quote, that lawyer was way out of his league and threw away every lifeline threw to him. painful to watch it be so badly argued. >> a case like this is not going up in front of a judge in a county. this is the supreme court and the attorney has a lot of experience. >> he's been in front of the supreme court dozens of times. he's a very good attorney but doesn't normally do high-tech cases, which may be why today is going to be tough for the plaintiffs, because that lawyer we're talking about in yesterday's case for the family against google is the same lawyer as the family today against twitter. we'll see if he learned anything from yesterday. >> all right. >> by the way, i need to mention -- oh, never mind. >> okay. a lot to get to, and certainly when you're going up against the supreme court, and dealing with
6:10 am
tech, that's always interesting. thank you for breaking it down. laura? >> guys, it's 6:09. look at the bay bridge glistening this morning. strong winds. i think everybody is talking about how strong those winds were blowing yesterday afternoon. we've had a lot of damage from trees down. kari, what is the forecast for today? >> there's going to be a lot of stories at work, people saying i had trees down, i didn't have power. we're seeing wide-ranging impacts here and the storm is just getting started here, as we take a live look outside in dublin. a lot of people on the way to work and you have to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel. now the winds are starting to calm down. it's 38 degrees and we only make it up to 49 today as our temperatures take a big dip for this afternoon. so make sure as you're standing in front of the closet getting dressed this morning you have lots of layers. we're going to talk more about what's ahead coming up. vianey has been watching
6:11 am
impacts on the morning commute. >> we are noticing areas with some slowing. let's start in the south bay from highway 85, north on 101, about 20 minutes. so we've been doing okay through most of the stretch in the south bay. let's head toward the peninsula. along the peninsula, southbound 101 from van ness avenue to sfo, 11 minutes. so the good news is no sigalerts, major accidents, but the typical slow spots, from pittsburg to walnut creek, 36 minutes. and, yes, the metering lights are on at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> thanks. 6:11 right now. celebrating pride in the sky. looking live at sfo this morning. still ahead, the first of its kind flight leaving in a matter of hours and heading down
6:12 am
in las vegas, the most popular food is broccoli. yeah, that's the only food. they have broccoli smoothies, and broccoli pancakes, and broccoli ice cream, and broccoli hotdogs, and of course, they have raw unseasoned broccoli..... with stems. -daddy, i don't want to go to las vegas with you and mommy tomorrow. oh, are you sure?
6:14 am
right now at 6:14, we are under a microclimate weather alert. martinez, it's still breezy but definitely not as windy as yesterday evening. and it's much cooler, only 42 degrees, headed for 50 today. we'll talk about when we could see rain and snow in the microclimate forecast coming up. and a live look right now at a very busy bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on and we're seeing slowing beyond the stretch through the berkeley curve. we'll have a closer look at drive times coming up. good morning. very happy wednesday to you.
6:15 am
markets were hit hard yesterday. we talked about this up-and-down cycle. bottom line, when investors think the fed is going to take more action, money rushes out of stocks and into bonds. yelp releasing interesting data about where employees are going. they don't have to work in the san francisco office anymore. they don't have to work in san francisco anymore. so they're moving east and down the map to florida and texas. yelp says 70% of workers who were living in san francisco left. the number of employees living in the south quadrupled. it really would be interesting to explore how this may affect politics in those states as thousands of san franciscans move into texas and florida. >> we're headed toward that one-year anniversary of russia's
6:16 am
invasion of ukraine. there are a lot of high-tech workers in ukraine, often employed by companies here in silicon valley. last year we spoke to the ceo of just answer, as he got ready to sneak into ukraine and bring his employees badly-needed supplies. he's wearing a head-mounted camera and touring us through the supplies. he's planning another trip. i got a chance to reach him before he left. >> imagine that your friend has had a baby and in the first month everybody is rushing to help and bring food and babysit and help out. that's how this war was in the beginning, it was all over the news and we were all talking about it and showing lots of ukrainian pride. here we are a year later and the need is more than ever and it's starting to get some fatigue in the news and they need our help. >> so, yeah, i asked andy, what can people do to help. he said, sure, money and whatnot. he said just keep it in the top of your mind, talk about it with
6:17 am
other people, be conscious of what's happening to the civilians, and that will help. >> 6:16 right now. a live look at sfo. and what better way to escape the bay area chill right now than a trip to sydney, australia. right now the city is celebrating lgbtq pride and to celebrate, united airlines is flying its first-ever pride flight. it kicks off with a party tonight at the gate at 9:00 p.m., complete with a dj and drag performance. look at that. united also says that the plane will be staffed mostly with members of the lgbtq community. it takes off a little before 11:00 p.m. and landing at 9:00 a.m. friday morning after crossing the international dateline. i can just imagine the party on that plane. >> and it's summertime there. >> see? >> i've been to sydney, it's a
6:18 am
very long flight. >> you've got to be ready for it. >> take a nap and the party will continue. quite the contrast of weather we're having here. >> it is definitely winter here and we're going to continue to have cold air and gusty winds. here is a live look outside in san francisco. looks nice, but we are going to start to add in the chance of rain as well. and it's still gusty here with the wind at 22 miles per hour, the temperature 45 degrees. we only make it up to 49 today, so there's not much of a warm-up. and it will stay gusty. and as we go into the next couple of days we'll have some wintery weather in the mix. there is a winter storm watch for the santa cruz mountains, as well as the east bay hills and into the north bay as well. a step up from that will be a winter storm warning, and we're seeing that for lake and mendocino counties, and we'll see rounds of rain and snow. but for the areas under the winter storm watch there's a potential of up to 8 inches of snow. that will create some dangerous
6:19 am
travel. and then another thing that is kind of a once in a generation storm, a blizzard warning for parts of southern california, and in these areas from l.a. county to ventura, santa barbara included, as you go up in elevation, hills above 4,000 feet, you're talking about 5 to 7 feet of snow in some of those areas. so, yeah, that's going to be really making headlines. we'll be watching that. we're also going to start to see some very unusual weather here and the potential of some spotty showers. but notice the peaks and whites here. that indicates a wintery mix. we'll start to see that on the santa cruz summit, as well as mount hamilton, and we'll see spotty showers moving through some of our valleys. we'll really start to see the activity picking up for tomorrow afternoon, rain across the north bay, snow for the hills. and that will also move into parts of the east bay, mount diablo, mount hamilton, santa
6:20 am
cruz summit with accumulating snow that will create dangerous travel. we're looking at 1 to 3 inches of snow, but it may be as high as 8 inches of snow farther north. we're going to see a couple waves coming through, especially on late thursday into friday. more rain in the forecast on sunday. another storm behind that on monday. all the while it's going to stay very chilly, so we're going to see precipitation changing back and forth from rain to snow. a wintery mix, even hail and maybe even graupel. there's a possibility for rainfall totals of about 2 to 3 inches, and maybe higher for next week. so things are going to be changing quickly here. and you want to make sure you're staying on top of all of this because it's going to be cold, windy, wet, and also all types of precipitation in this forecast over the next several days. so a big impact storm on the way. vianey, this caused a big issue for the bay bridge and also just traveling around that area. >> it did.
6:21 am
especially for high profile vehicles, the higher you are off the ground, the likelihood that you might have an unfortunate hazard of tipping over. i want to show you a look through the richmond camera. it's busy, we've got metering lights on. a high wind advisory is in effect for most bay area bridges. i started to notice some slowing through the sunol grade right here on 84 and 680. i didn't see any accidents being reported, but this is a pretty big hot spot for overnight construction. the speed is moving at about 12 miles per hour in the tri-valley. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. 6:21 right now. re-writing his past. next on "today in the bay," we'll introduce you to one man now working to brighten the futures for those in his community by helping them learn om his past mistakes.fr
6:22 am
6:24 am
welcome back. it is 6:24 for you this morning. and as we continue our series "discover black heritage" today we want to highlight a man using his past to push him in a new direction. >> he's using his past experiences to help bring together an entire community. "today in the bay's" mike inouye shares his story. >> i was born and raised in the city to a single mother, no father. i've been shot five times. did ten years in prison. i changed my life and now i'm
6:25 am
here. >> reporter: for the past decade damien posey has been building us for us, affectionately known as uncle damien. >> i'm not a role model. i'm not perfect by any chance. i've made mistakes in my life. i still make some to my day. but i'm putting 120% effort towards being the best person that i can be and that's all that i can ask from the young people, and also work with individuals coming from prison, we work with seniors as well. anyone that's trying to better themselves and do better for their communities. >> reporter: his message is clear, it's not just about the youth, because the whole community, the whole city has to grow together. >> i'm all about bringing resources to communities, providing help and support for families, for seniors. there's so many grandmothers out here raising their grandsons,
6:26 am
and it's such -- it's an age gap and i'm trying to connect and make sure that these young people respect the seniors in their life. it's hard because we don't always see things eye to eye. there is a better way. i'm here for you when you're ready. all fruit doesn't ripen at the same time. all flowers don't bloom at the same time. i didn't change my life until i was in my mid-20s. >> reporter: they have status giving them permission to act as a nonprofit. >> you don't need permission to do things in your community. >> reporter: it's now about us for us. mike inouye for "today in the bay." >> altogether. 6:26. next here are the top stories, including those strong winds and the winter chill sticking around for a while. meteorologist kari hall returns with the timeline and unusual

colder temperatures on the way. this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, and online. good wednesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. now, this morning we do have a lot to get to, a lot of team coverage on the windy weather and the deepening cold temperatures out there. our pete suratos is live for us in the north bay with the damage being done across the bay area. but meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring these dangerous conditions. it's not just the wind we're talking about. it's also some of the freezing cold temperatures, too. >> we are going to have freezing temperatures tonight and even the possibility of some rain and snow over the next couple of days. but so far it's been the wind and dry conditions, and even our current wind gusts are still pretty high, near the coastline and in some of our hills. mount diablo, 39 miles per hour, and that's ongoing from the peak wind gusts we had yesterday evening that brought down a lot of trees and caused power
6:31 am
outages. we do still have the high wind warning for the coastline and the rest of the bay area, a wind advisory, and that's where the winds could possibly reach 30 to 40 miles per hour into the afternoon, with higher gusts near the coastline. as we go toward 1:00 today, here is a look at those wind gusts that could reach 30 miles per hour, prolonged wind event like this could really weaken some of those trees, cause stress on tree branches, and bring down more as we go into today. be prepared for more power outages, as well as more damage, and then eventually we'll see the rain arriving. so we'll talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. no doubt you heard and felt it over the past 24 hours, the strong winds and in some cases toppling trees into homes. >> it's been howling. you're going to feel it if your morning commute includes crossing any of our bay area bridges. pete suratos is live in sausalito with a look at the damage.
6:32 am
that includes a close call for north bay residents. >> reporter: yeah, very close call. we got new video coming into the newsroom this morning of a redwood falling into a home in sonoma county. we want to show you some of those images. the large redwood basically splitting up that home last night. with the winds, of course, we're expecting this type of activity. this is just one example of a downed tree. those downed trees we've been seeing across the entire region, especially with winds picking up overnight. thankfully, no one was hurt and the folks inside did get out safely. here is a neighbor explaining the moment the tree collapsed into his neighbor's home. >> i heard a crack and then i seen the tree, and it looked like it was coming this way, but it hit his house and it was a big old bang. >> reporter: now, if you were heading westbound on the bay bridge yesterday you may have encountered this, a tree getting knocked down at the entrance of
6:33 am
the tunnel. it created quite the backup, bringing traffic to a halt. on dumbarton the winds were blowing over port-o-potties. winds knocked down power lines near jefferson and el camino. montgomery schools are not going to have classes due to storm related issues and marin county are planning to open up their emergency center and that's also connected to the conditions. we'll, of course, continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as they come in. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you. and you can track that wind, as well as the power outages from your phone, and if your power is out you can watch our shows live to get information, just download our free nbc bay area app. head to the weather tab and get

personalized forecasts for your neighborhood. this morning parents of children with special needs plan to protest outside of eloni elementary school in palo alto. they're upset over the recent decision to consolidate the special education programs. palo alto unified wants to split classes, one class for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten through second and a second for grades three through five. that means next year eloni and escondido students will move to other schools in the district. one mom tells us that disruption will harm her daughter. >> there's no guarantee that the teachers will moving, because there's going to be reshuffling of classrooms. she could end up with a new teacher, new aides, so she has -- she'll have to get used to new people, it's a new physical space, which is a huge thing for her. >> another reason parents are
6:35 am
upset to leave eloni, it is a choice school that is hard to get into. we did reach out to palo alto unified for comment but have not heard back. 6:34. this week the world is marking one year since russia's invasion of ukraine, which happens this friday. neither side appears to be anywhere close to budging on the conflict. some experts say a new round of military offenses may alter the trajectory of the war. this morning we wanted to check in with journalist and author, jo harper, on the ground in warsaw, poland. as we approach this one-year mark, what do you think has changed the most from when this conflict first began and really what is expected in the coming months? >> i think what's changed, really, is that putin has realized that his initial plan failed, his initial idea was to invade ukraine and take kyiv very quickly and it hasn't happened.
6:36 am
so after a year, he's still fighting, really, the battle in the east of ukraine. on top of that, nato, i think, is much more unified, much stronger than it perhaps was at the beginning, the role of germany, for example, coming onboard. and i think also what you've seen is a shifting of the kind of diplomatic epicenter, let's say, in europe, towards the east. so now warsaw, poland, may not last very long, but it's much more important, it seems, to the u.s. and western european countries than it was, for example, germany, berlin previously. >> it certainly stands out in the help they've been giving the people who have been fleeing from ukraine. you were in warsaw as well when president biden just yesterday delivered that really fiery
6:37 am
speech. the president is vowing to back ukraine as long as it takes, even though a recent nbc news poll shows 50% of americans disagree with how he's handling the conflict. what really struck you during that address? >> the main thing was that he arrived. i think people in poland and this part of the world were very pleased, very happy, excited. people here love america. they're kind of ambivalent about the west, whether the west, including america, will back words up with deeds. i think this is symbolic, but i think it is actually in itself a deed. it means something to people here. the thing that stuck out to me most was his reference to belarus, which is extremely important, i think, in this part of the world.
6:38 am
what happens there may determine what happens in the war, in ukraine. the russians are talking or there are reports the russians are talking about annexing belarus and biden said that ukraine won't be secure, won't be safe until belarus is free. over the last two years there's an kind of an underground fight against the lukashenko regime and i'm not sure what biden meant by that. i'm not sure if he knew exactly in concrete terms what he meant. but that could change the dynamic. >> very much so. interesting that he made the reference. i'm glad to show the presence of the united states is important there. jo harper, thank you so much for taking time to join us and please be safe yourself. >> okay, thank you. >> all this week nbc news is bringing you reports from ukraine. this morning on "today," nbc news's kristen welker will be in warsaw breaking down the latest
