right now at 4:30, wintry weather slamming the bay area. we're issuing a microclimate weather alert. the way many cities are prepping. plus, vianey times the weather out for us. a good thursday morning to you. i am marcus washington. >> i am laura garcia. let's get right over to kari. we are talking about the cold, cold temperatures.

>> we have seen spotty rain and snow for the upper elevations around the area. i wanted to start out with storm ranger, and also a lot of colors here because we are also seeing some snow in the santa cruz mountains. we are also picking up on heavy snow as you go up above saratoga and the summit in the santa cruz mountains. otherwise spotty showers moving through sunnyvale. we also look around livermore, and spotty snow showers in the hills in that area, and not everybody is seeing this activity. as you are driving to work this morning, you may notice the roads are wet and then other areas are completely dry. here's what to expect. a chance of rain and snow off and on throughout the day, and

temperatures reaching in the low 40s and upper 50s. we have a chance of isolated thunderstorms throughout the day. we will also see the snow as you go up in elevation and a rain/snow mix. i will have more on this in a view minutes. vianey, how is it looking for the morning commute? >> one thing we can expect is to see frosty conditions in some of the areas. no issues on the bridges, however, chp issued wind advisories for all of the bridges, the san mateo bridge, the dumbarton bridge and the bough -- benicia bridge.

we are not seeing delays. the bay bridge is doing well, and san mateo bridge, 12 minutes. your east bay drive times right now, doing well for 680, 238. a viewer sent us this video for his home in los gatos. >> it all looks nice but these conditions do come with dangerous warnings for you. "today in the bay" reports that this is how some of the snow can be dangerous for drivers, especially for those who are frequent on highway 17. >> we have snow in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: the excitement is on across the bay area as white falls from our skies. >> it's snow. >> it doesn't happen very often.

>> reporter: it has been years since we have seen a snow event like this, hitting north and southern california all at once. families have been stocking up on supplies after the storm warning on thursday and friday. california's highway patrol say they have officers patrolling hot spots, like the santa cruz mountains where the snow is stirring concerns. caltrans district 4 and 5 are all hands on deck, clearing storm drains and getting ready to sand roads. arborist are trying to catch up as they pick up after an angry snowstorm. >> when you consider that a gallon of water is over eight pounds, that's a lot of weight sitting up there in the trees. >> this is the most snow i have

ever seen. but tonight is going to be epic. >> stephanie magallon for "today in the bay." this is the area of 17 skpt folsom, which is known to blood. the barriers will be up as long as necessary. winter weather is forcing caltrans to hit the brakes on the closure of 680, and that was supposed to close overnight. with that rain on the horizon, that closure will be pushed out to next weekend starting late-night hours of march 3rd. this is between sunol boulevard and banal avenue. bart is advising you to add ten minutes to your travel time.

many people across the bay area are still without power. at last check, some 25,000 customers still in the dark, and most of them along the peninsula. today in the bay's terry mcsweeney. >> when there are wind storms, there will be power outages. the concern is how long it takes pg&e to get the power back on, and some it's costing them patience, and others it's costing them a lot of money. the power went out and the owner of this restaurant lost more than electricity. >> yeah, we closed yesterday so yeah, probably $1,500 in one

freezing in a lot of our inland valleys, including santa rosa as well as over towards the tri-valley. we have spots below freezing in the south county. also, los gatos, we will see cold air and moisture coming in. you know what that means, a mix of precipitation. we will look at that in the forecast, coming up. cool conditions means you could be waking up with frost on the windshields up through the north bay and interior. take extra time. the south bay, a typical commute, 17 to 20 minutes on most stretches. good morning. i am silvana henao on cnbc. the s&p 500 has run its losing straight sessions.

the moves coming after the minutes from the latest federal reserve meeting show that members are resolved to keep fighting inflation with more interest rate hikes. we will get jobless claims and a revised look at a fourth quarter gdp. and then wells fargo had sweeping layoffs this week. cnbc had more on the layoffs, including bankers that recently attended a sales retreat. google is asking some employees to share desks as the company downsizes office space. documents show google's cloud unit have told workers it will shift to desk sharing in several

welcome back. at 4:46, you're watching "today in the bay." look at this, a fresh set of snow blanketing highway 17. look at that coming down. here's another look at the area. a viewer sent us in on their drive home from work. it's always still kind of exciting for folks. >> good to see, but not necessarily to drive in it ordeal with it. we're looking with the

scattered rain and snow showers coming down. it's so hit or miss what we are seeing in the santa cruz mountains. as you get past saratoga, you are already starting to see snow coming down this morning. as we move over towards the tri-valley, we have seen a couple spotty showers here and there, and it's cleared up for now. we have seen it moving through with parts of the east bay and snow flurries in the mix as the cold air continues this morning. a lot of the heavier rain and a lot of the deeper moisture has been off the coast. we are under a winter storm warning for all of these areas shaded in pink, and that includes parts of the tri-valley, the eastbound hills and around mount diablo. we have the coastal range and marin county as well. for parts of sonoma, we are looking at higher snowfall totals there. there's the possibility in some of these spots we can see enough

to accumulate there in the next knew days. mount hamilton, that's 12 inches of snowfall. we could see decent amounts of snow in parts of the north bay as well. it does start out spotty, but we see the activity picking up later in the afternoon and into the evening. there's much more possibility as we get some thunderstorms and possible hail. we are going to see much more activity going into the weekend. this storm system rolls out for a brief break on saturday. a new one comes in on sunday. there's more behind that going into next week, so we could really see these rainfall totals adding up. we could see a possibility of an inch in parts of the north bay and more than an inch in parts

of the south bay. as we run out to the next storm next week, in total we could see over 2 1/2 inches of rainfall across the bay area. looks like it gives us a break on wednesday, but all the way up until then we will see a lot of changeable weather go into the next few days. at times it will be sunny, at times raining, and we will see all types of precipitation so we are requesting people take pictures of it and send us to it so we know what has been going on. vianey is tracking the roads and it looks like there could be slick spots. >> we have a couple spots. chp is reporting an accident along northbound 880 and whiple. tri-valley drive times, this is typically where we see the most

slowing the earliest. as we move closer to the 5:00 hour, you are looking at 22 minutes from grant line road to 680. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. residents in one gilroy community are rallying around a 70-year old man when he was injured in a road rage incident earlier this month. >> neighbors tell us the 70-year old man is a disabled veteran, and he's recovering from a number of injuries -- >> oh, my god. >> dashcam video capturing a horrifying situation in gilroy last monday. you can see a man somehow ending up on the hood of a car. the driver speeding through a private community. >> he was pleading through his life. help, please, stop.

and it was kind of agonizing to hear which is why i ran out to the front of my house and that's when things really unfolded. >> his dashcam captured the video, and his wife and kids were in the car. seems like the driver did not plan on stopping or slowing down. >> i hopped in another one of our vehicles and drove to the corner where i came across the man laying in the street. >> the driver had already taken off. the man on the street under a lot of duress and bleeding from his head. >> i ran next to and held his hand and told him help was on the way and stayed there until the medics arrived. >> how did david end up on the hood of the car? he said from his hospital bed,

the driver was driving erratically include the >> the driver just accelerated full speed, and david had no other option because his knee was hyperextended but to grab on to the vehicle. that's how david ended up as we see in the video. >> right now they are gathering video evidence to figure out how the situation escalated, who was the primary aggressor and how the man ended up on the hood of the car. >> horrible to see that. this year we have an extra month to file our state and income returns, and the extra time is because it could be more complicated for some californians. the storms we dealt with cost
