do. i'm laura garcia. we've got live team coverage. kris sanchez is live along highway 17 monitoring the road closure in both directions, forcing a lot of drivers to turn around. vianey is tracking the chaotic commute. a lot of flooding out there. let's start with meteorologist kari hall. this is what her commute looked like through the sunol grade this morning. you saw it turn from rain to snow. >> lucky it wasn't sticking there. yeah, it was very sloppy. we're seeing these kinds of conditions all around the bay area as you're heading off for work this morning. we have seen a lot of snow in spots that don't typically see it, and even areas that sometimes get it during the winter, it's getting a lot more than we usually see. these areas in blue, we are seeing some of that snow coming down, and it's on either side of the south county, as the sky clears later today you'll be able to see snow on the hills
6:01 am
all around you. really heavy rain coming down in redwood city, as well as menlo park. palo alto picking up on heavy rain. i wouldn't be surprised if there's some rain mixed in there as well. we're seeing this cold storm producing a lot of energy and a lot of types of precipitation, but we've also seen our temperatures fluctuating and one degree difference can change the type of precipitation you're seeing. widespread rain across the east bay, but notice the snow is starting to taper off for parts of the north bay. but it's still creating hazardous conditions around parts of napa and solano county. and we're going to be dealing with this for several more hours. vianey, you're seeing this add up on the roadways. >> roadways and mass transit. i want to start with this because i want our commuters to be informed. b.a.r.t. has said that they are running at slower speeds to accommodate for the weather. ac transit also has several
6:02 am
delays. so watch out for that. they are encouraging folks to visit their website for the latest updates. caltrain also expecting to see possible weather delays. right now no delays reported on the vta. but i do want to start with a look at the bay area to show you the bigger concerns. happening in the south bay, we had an earlier crash causing issues along 101 and 280. the speed moving at about 16 miles per hour. another hot spot as well now starting to really build is the bay bridge. the metering lights are on at the toll plaza, but beyond the curve at richmond, also a couple of crashes causing issues through that stretch. but of course highway 17, this has been a big one, continues to remain closed in both directions right now. they had not only weather conditions there impacting the road, but also earlier crashes as well. no estimated time on reopening. let's turn to "today in the bay's" kris sanchez, live along highway 17. i hope you're somewhat warm.
6:03 am
how are things looking out there? >> reporter: you told me, you and kari told me what the forecast was going to be, so i am layered up. it is nasty because we're just getting rain. it was beautiful yesterday as they were getting snow. now we're just getting cold rain, very close to freezing. behind me you see the highway patrol coming in and all of those semi trucks that are backed up because they can't get through highway 17. there is still a hard closure out here this morning. i want to show you what the continues were like at the summit before the snowfall there was rain and hail, and the temperatures were close to freezing. chp has chains on some patrol cars and even a caltrans crew got stuck up there. there is a hard closure because a big rig jackknifed and we talked with a driver who saw it happen. >> i got caught in the storm and my tires started turning and i saw the big rig and he started peeling out. i pulled over and i guess he
6:04 am
jackknifed and we were stuck for hours and the snow kept coming harder and harder. a tree dropped in front of my truck so i was stuck on the road and the tree kept dropping, so i stayed in my truck. finally someone came and rescued me. >> we're telling people to stay off the roads. >> stay off the roads. if you can pull over, get off as soon as you can. it was pretty scary. >> reporter: so we are up here on bear creek road where chp is turning drivers around, re-routing them north to san jose, los gatos. getting up to this point was a line of semis parked off the shoulder. i drove 17 south to get here. this is what highway 17 north looked like earlier in the morning. another driver told us the summit was totally snowed in and you couldn't see the parking lot there at the summit. they got turned around at granite creek road. the conditions have been bad since the storm started with low visibility, rain, snow and wind, and caltrans was out with snow

plows this time yesterday morning. today we have three ready for highway 17, highway 29 in napa and the caldecott tunnel on highway 24. they're calling this operation snowflake. it may be tempting to get in the car and try to check it out. yesterday was pretty, today is downright dangerous. it is very nasty. and because the temperatures are coming down, the roadways are extremely slick. so make sure you stay off the roads if you can. on highway 17, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> that's really good advice. everyone wants to see. but at this point it's just dangerous out there. thank you. a lot of people have been sharing videos and photos from the overnight hail and snow. you can, too. so once you post those on social media, anywhere across the bay area, make sure you tag us @nbc bay area. once you tag us on facebook,

twitter or instagram, you can also tag meteorologist kari hall @kari hall weather. we have a follow-up on the toddler nearly killed by a falling tree this week in boulder creek. the 2-year-old milo smith has been hospitalized since tuesday. this after a tree fell onto his home, trapping him and five other family members inside. doctors are treating him at valley medical center. his parents called surviving it a miracle. >> he's the luckiest unlucky kid in the entire world at this point. the chances of him to be struck by the tree like that, but to be in that particular position and particularly where it was, yeah, it's a miracle. >> milo's parents say the boy faces more surgical procedures, followed by therapy, but they also add that he's in very good spirits. >> a lot of those conditions caused by the weather that we're experiencing right now.
6:07 am
a live look across the bay area this morning, much of us getting hit by a lot of that rain. some of us getting snow and hail. meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all for us this morning. it's going to stick around for the most part. >> it's going to be a few more hours before this clears out. we're tracking it with stormranger. if you live in the hills try not to travel at this point. and in the valleys we're seeing a lot of rain. you may encounter some of that changing to snow as you make your way to work this morning. it's a big impact for areas from san francisco to the east bay on southward and a lot of heavy snow coming down in napa that's starting to edge into the hills of solano county, and the northern areas for lake and mendocino counties, also getting light snow. really heavy rain elsewhere that's coming water to stand on the roadways. we're going to continue to see that for the next few hours, with some gusty winds that are
6:08 am
paebing at 25 to 35 miles per hour per hour. this will start to taper off tonight, but there will be more rain through the weekend. we see activity ramping up about 10:00 for most of us before the afternoon, we start to see clearing, a bit of sunshine. you'll see the hills coating all of us around the bay area. vianey, any impacts? it's really backed up there. >> once the metering lights came on, this is what we're seeing. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. this extends beyond that toll plaza all the way in both directions through berkeley because we've got some crashes along that berkeley curve. that's going to continue to impact that. also through oakland as well. i want to zoom in on some troubled spots. right now chp reporting issues through gilroy along 101, both directions are seeing a crash through the 105 interchange. in addition to that, we're seeing some impacts from downed trees along 152, heading into
6:09 am
watsonville. we've got a bit of a closure because of some impacts from the overnight hours along 152, in addition to highway 17 and calistoga as well. another area where we're seeing slowing is south bay, 101, flooding concerns through 80 and 680, 580, frosty conditions through the tri-valley. so just take that extra time. mass transit also experiencing some weather delays. back to you. >> it is a very busy morning out there. thank you. it is 6:09. happening today, the man arrested in connection with a deadly recent house explosion in san francisco's sunset district is due back in court for his arraignment. darrin price was operating a narcotics lab inside his home, investigators say. he's facing charges, including involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and drug charges. today officially marking one year since russia invaded ukraine. while the united nations is calling for a new peace deal,

russian president vladimir putin is promising to strengthen russia's nuclear forces. here is "today's" richard engel in ukraine looking at the impact from one year of war. >> reporter: one year after russia invaded ukraine, this country is hardly recognizable. large parts of the country in the areas of the east and south along the front line have been destroyed. millions of ukrainians are living outside their homes, many as refugees outside the country, and half of this country's children are displaced. very few are going to school. many are living in underground bunkers. coming up on the "today" show, i'll have a look at the children of war. >> thank you. also on "today," the white house security adviser, jake sullivan, is speaking out about u.s. assistance for ukraine and in the next half hour on "today in the bay," jay gray will be live in poland talking about the flood of refugees. a massive lotto win stolen?

coming up next on "today in the bay," the new lawsuit just filed over the recent $2 billion jackpot and the man claiming his winning ticket was taken. >> more discouraging news about inflation. and got milk? it depend on the type. let's take you out to the futures. i guarantee red numbers. that's exactly what we're going to see with that bad inflation news. >> and a winter wonderland at the beach. the stunning images you won't want to miss. we're back in just under three minutes. yore watching "today in u'th

6:14 am
6:13. we get a look at stormranger in the north bay. still seeing that changeover to snow for the hills in parts of sonoma and napa counties, also for solano county. we're tracking all of the off and on changes with rain and snow. you can track it as well on the nbc bay area app. and chp is reporting a new issue. this one in the south bay along 237 eastbound after exit 6, the great america parkway. the slowing is due to flooding. we're noticing delays all the way through the 880 interchange through milpitas and impacting 680 as well. we'll have drive times coming up. good morning. happy friday. we just got more bad news on inflation. the pce or personal consumption expenditures index showing

beach. many thought this was snow, but meteorologist kari hall confirmed it's hail. but still a pretty stunning scene on a california beach. we've got new video this morning, this from the santa cruz mountains. >> that's cute. >> what is this stuff? >> they're, like, i still need to go use the bathroom, but what is this? >> that's the hardest thing right now, getting the animals to go outside. cold, wet, soggy. >> binks looks at me like this. bundle them up. it's cold. we're getting started with rain, the snow, all kinds of weather in the bay area that we don't typically see. we're all looking at this, like, what is this falling? well, we want to get those pictures so that we can help you because people thought that was snow on the beach in santa cruz. and so we are seeing rain, snow, hail, graupel, it's all been falling here in the past 24 to
6:19 am
48 hours. and it's continuing now. there's a lot of colors here, so let's go through what stormranger is showing as we've been picking up on a lot of green. that's rain. the white is snow, and we are seeing that still coming down in parts of sonoma and napa and solano counties this morning. but the dark blue, that is really heavy snow. and we're seeing that even as you go up above about 1,500 feet. so those are the hills right above san jose, as well as along morgan hill, over the reservoirs we're seeing heavy snow. for the santa cruz mountains, for the higher elevations it's changing from rain to snow. redwood city, woodside, palo alto, really heavy downpours. for the east bay we've seen heavy rain as well through the tri-valley, 680, 580, soggy and creating hazardous travel conditions. a wider view shows that we are
6:20 am
seeing dry air moving into parts of the north bay, while the brunt of the storm is still hitting areas from san francisco to the east bay and southward. a couple of lightning strikes. we can see there is nowhere you can go to escape the storm. it's hitting all of california, right now the southern coast and approaching southern california. the storm is still spinning off the coast and that will draw in more moisture for the next several hours. temperature-wise, it's so marginal. that means we're seeing that sometimes it's just cold enough for it to change over to hail or snow pellets, and then in other areas it's a little bit too warm and one degree can make a huge difference. in napa we're still looking at off and on showers through at least about noon, but there should be clearing for the afternoon. not much warming. going into this evening, we are going to start to see this activity tapering off for most of us. but there still may be snow coming down in the hills even
6:21 am
tonight, and then into early tomorrow morning there's still going to be that lingering moisture for those upper elevations to still kind of get additional snowfall. going into the weekend, another round of rain on sunday and you can see this cold air still lingering. we're looking at a wintery mix, even into the next storm on monday, as well as tuesday. finally this may taper off as we get into the month of march. we'll get sunshine for the first few days of march. but on top of what we've already measured, yet another quarter inch of rainfall. once we get those storms next week, we could see about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rainfall and it's going to be soggy for the start of next week. eventually we'll get back to the sunshine. by then, we're going to be like, oh, wow, this has been a lot. we'll continue to get you through all of that over the next few days. vianey is getting you to work with where we're seeing a slowdown. >> think of today as a mess on
6:22 am
the roads, no matter where you turn you're going to hit ponding water, there have been several spinouts. the san mateo bridge is moving, but it's very windy. chp has issued a wind advisory for pretty much all of the bridges. i do want to show you spots that are showing some flooding, this in the south bay, milpitas, 101/237, both directions showing flooding. that could be causing concerns, especially in some of the slow lanes and the on ramps through the south bay stretch as well. another spot seeing slowing, through gilroy we had an earlier crash along the 101/52 interchange. also, a stretch of 152 is closed right now. highway 17 is still closed. expect big delays through 80. the bay bridge lights are definitely on. >> if you can stay home, you should certainly stay home. since you're home, let's keep it going. there's a new generation of young people not exactly rushing out to the dmv.

this rare winter weather and the dangerous conditions for drivers. this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, and online. a very good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. first, we have new video to show you from chp on highway 17 and santa cruz mountains. so this is within the area now under that hard closure in both directions. you can certainly see the reason why out there. a little earlier today drivers were facing conditions looking a lot more like the sierra. >> certainly so. meteorologist kari hall is leading our coverage this morning. it's really coming down across the bay area. >> yeah, and if it's not snow, it's heavy rain and it's starting to cause more issues on the roadways. so let's get a look at all of the colors we have going on due to the different types of precipitation that we have on stormranger. we are seeing a lot of snow on some of our hills from mount hamilton, toward mount diablo,
6:31 am
as well as the santa cruz mountains and steadier snow farther to the north for parts of lake and mendocino counties. the heavy rain has been picking up, in solano county you can see the cluster of yellows and reds above about 1,500 feet, that's changing to snow. we're going to see this continue for the next several hours, at least through noon for the south bay. it may lighten up sooner for parts of the north bay. temperatures will stay cold. eventually we'll see the hills around us lit up with bright white snow all around the bay area. we'll be tracking that and talk about more precipitation in our weekend forecast. vianey, you're seeing a lot of issues. >> now that it's been raining a little longer, flooding is now the big issue on the roads. here in sunnyvale along the 101 interchange, we're getting reports of flooding. through the east bay stretch also. the new one from chp is in south san francisco. notice here southbound 280, a sigalert has been issued. not only because of flooding,
6:32 am
but also an earlier crash. this is along southbound 280, south of san francisco. the traffic concerns are stretched back beyond daly city, another spot where we're seeing issues, both directions of 101 passing through bayshore, also reports of flooding beyond the 280 interchange as well. one lane appears to be completely flooded in the eastbound lanes. impacts through san bruno. so san francisco really starting to get some heavy impacts. we'll have a closer look at drive times coming up. >> thanks, vianey. if it's not rain, we're seeing snow. it impacted lower elevations in the bay area that haven't seen things like this in years. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us drive in berkeley hills. in the last hour we saw a lot of snow. looks like you're just pretty soggy, bob. >> reporter: it's cold out there. there's no doubt about that. that is a fact. we're in between right now with
6:33 am
some rain and some snow. we're at just over 1,100 feet, the grizzly peak that overlooks the city of berkeley. this was an hour ago, where it was within a matter of moments where it changed from this heavy rain to heavy flurries and we did have a lot of flurries coming down, it did stick on the ground, in the grass for a little bit. a light dusting, if you will. i can look to my right and still see a light dusting. this is just a wet road issue, not an easy road issue up here. it's been on and off, and the temperature is here for it to snow if it wants to. we've been getting minor gusts, which adds to the fun of standing out here. this is video i shot around 3:30 this morning. this is on the valley floor in livermore by the lawrence livermore lab. i don't know if it's snow or not. it's your decision to make. but it was coming down as heavy
6:34 am
rain and sometimes it hit my windshield as slush. it looked like it wanted to turn into snow but didn't. in my 20 years of living in livermore, one time we had flurries. i've never seen anything like that. by the way, 580 heading over the altamont, there is an ice advisory according to chp because of the precipitation and cold temps. this is video shot between 1:00 and 2:00 this morning, this is way north in the north bay, this is 101 through cloverdale. they got quite a bit of snow. looks like an inch or two that stuck to the ground. highway 128 up there at cloverdale is shut down because the conditions are too treacherous. this is video that jody hernandez shot yesterday on highway 29 in napa county where you can see cars were losing control and spinning out and they ended up shutting parts of highway 29 down as well. live in berkeley, we're getting
6:35 am
at one of those gusts. we're in a break from the snow. as i look over the city of berkeley, it's definitely -- a white haze, i don't know if that's snow or rain, but the conditions are ripe for more snow. >> you can hear how windy it is as well. try to stay warm, bob. you can see the conditions, getting behind the wheel in the storm never a fun thing. and it can be a challenge for a lot of people with the mixed rain and snow. what do you do? we want to get you prepared before you head out the door. cynthia is here to give us some advice. what should people do? get ready before you leave? >> get ready before you leave. i've been talking with chp. they're getting ready to be on full force on the roads, and he said it's really all about preparation. before you leave the house, check the forecast in the morning and do a quick inspection of your car. let's get to tips. check the tires, your headlights, windshield wipers,
6:36 am
your heating system, and plan to have chains in some parts of the bay area, maybe if you're thinking of going to tahoe, and at least half a tank of gas. some of us forget about that. some extra things we may forget are things like flashlights, cell phone chargers, if you've got to get ahold of 911, water and snacks, especially if you have younger children, even for yourself. dressing in layers and with sturdy shoes, also good in case you have to walk around some wet or snowy surfaces. so those uggs or flip-flops might not cut it today. >> not even the crocs. when people are going out, you say i'm just going to go a few miles, i'll be okay, and then something happens. what should people do if they're out and get caught up in this? >> you have to dress, prepare to be outside. so you've got to wear those extra layers. don't freak out is the first thing i would say if you are stuck in dangerous travel. you have to take a deep breath, be ready to assess any kind of
6:37 am
situation you're in, and be vigilant. preparing for this beforehand. i wanted to share this video of our team in southern california. they're dealing with the storm. this is in the san bernardino mountains, cajon pass. maybe you've taken this route on your way to vegas. it's not only us here in the bay area, people in southern california who may have never dealt with a storm of this magnitude also having to prepare. if you are on the road, turn on hazard lights. and if you can and it's safe to do so, get out of the car, check if you have any damage or hazards piling up, like snow. people might not think about this. snow blowing from other cars could hit your win shield and that causes another hazard. call 911 if it's an emergency, listen to the radio for any new information and pay attention to roadway signs and what the officers are doing on the road to keep you safe. plus, that half a tank of gas will come in handy to keep you warm if you do get stuck.
6:38 am
you can crank up the heater. remember to slow down, turn around, don't drown. we've got to always remember, any little bit of water could be a danger to your car. >> i'm glad you mentioned the gas tank. i pulled into the parking lot and the light came on. i've got to get gas before i go home. we're going to be dealing with these conditions for a while. we are not going to be able to escape this storm. take a look at how big it is as you're making weekend plans. it is all affected parts of northern california, the sierra, as well as southern california, and we are seeing a lot of snow. in fact, the brunt of the storm is making its way toward the central coast. we've been talking about this, the blizzard warnings for the upper elevations in southern california, where they could see about 5 to 7 feet of snow. now, around the l.a. area and some of the valleys it's going to be cold, off and on rain
6:39 am
throughout the weekend for today, as well as tomorrow. maybe some clearing on sunday. but definitely not clearing in tahoe this weekend. really travel is not advised. they had to close the highways yesterday. people were just sitting there. and we still do have some very dangerous road conditions for the next couple of days. there may be a brief break for tomorrow, but then it does pick up again on sunday. in fact, this weekend we could see another 1 to 2 feet of snow for parts of the sierra, on top of all of the heavy snow we've already gotten. maybe hang out a little bit here closer to home. we've got the warriors game going on tonight and around the chase center it's going to be in the mid to low 40s, and also the rain will start to taper off in san francisco. napa valley this weekend will see waves of rain and highs in the low 50s. morning temperatures starting out in the upper 30s and low 40s. i'm trying to hold off the rain for the black joy parade and festival on sunday.
6:40 am
looks like we are going to all have to bundle up as our highs only reach into the low 50s, and also wearing the rain gear as that rain may be coming through. we'll be tracking all of this. it's been changing minute by minute. vianey, you're seeing a lot of stuff popping up. >> it is so busy from car accidents to flooded roadways, icy roads. the bay bridge toll plaza backed up. now we're seeing reports of an accident on the bay bridge, on the eastbound lanes near treasure island. i saw this populate. the westbound lanes also slowing down. expect delays throughout the majority of bridges because there's also a high wind advisory in effect as well. san francisco seeing some flooding issues earlier near bayshore 101. chp had issued a traffic alert along 280, and notice the speed moving at about 24 miles per hour. and a quick reminder, we talk about the sierra travel, but the grapevine right now through frazier park in southern

to the bay bridge. 19 minutes. a look at your tri-valley, south bay, and north bay drive times coming up. it is 6:44. today marks one year since russia invaded ukraine. >> scott mcgrew, we could not have guessed on the first day that we would be where we are now one year later. >> extraordinary. anybody, refugees, americans, ukrainians, a year ago today we were talking about the feared and powerful russian army with its military convoy miles long, closing in on kyiv. we had no idea how weak the russian army would turn out to be and that convoy actually broke down on its own. russian invaders repelled from the capital. russian president putin who for years had been sowing seeds of doubt about nato with an early american president, suddenly found nato was unified and angry, even germany, which at
6:46 am
one point was struggling over whether to send helmets to ukraine, is sending tanks today. the united states just committed sending $2 billion more in military aid, including more ammunition for the feared american himars. those hit russian troops at a distance. the ukrainian military needs weapons but it's shooting so much so fast, it really needs ammunition. the war has created millions of refugees, of course, crossing into poland, crossing back when they think it's safe. our jay gray says it's like a revolving door. jay is back at those border crossings on this, the one-year mark. did anybody think this would last a year? >> reporter: absolutely not. no, i think you characterized it perfectly, what this war revealed is the weakness of the russian military on the ground, and with strategy, at least early on. i think most thought this would be a week, at the longest. and i think you saw some
6:47 am
resentment from allies, including, frankly, the u.s. to jump in early because they didn't think this would go on. ukraine people showed a very different story there and continue to keep up the fight, the struggle to keep their country free and safe. it's a struggle for these refugees as well. we know that 10 million or nearly 10 million have left the country in the last year. most of them into poland. we're at the border crossing here. it has been, by far, the busiest of the crossings between ukraine and poland, more than 1 million coming through these gates. it is a revolving door at this point. you've got the families looking for safety, looking for shelter. but you've got people going back in, bringing much-needed supplies, and of course some of them head to go the front lines to join in the fight. >> jay, they're coming back because in some situations their town is peaceful. but violence is coming.
6:48 am
we were talking about this earlier. war has always been violent, but technology is really bringing this into our living room the way that vietnam did, the way the persian gulf did. this one, it's just everywhere. it's on our telephones. >> reporter: yeah, it's amazing how quickly we see the horror of war that's happening in ukraine. you're absolutely right. it's never been in our faces quite like it has been here. and i think part of that is that the targets have changed since the very smart of the war. now targeting communities, apartments, hospitals and doctors' offices, 700 medical facilities have been hit by russian missiles or tank mortars since this war began. so that view of communities makes people realize that these were people just like them a year ago, that were going to soccer practice, worried about
6:49 am
their jobs, worried about other things. that daily routine was shattered when the tanks rolled in, when the skies started to rain missiles, and remains that way a year later, with many concerned not only how long this will last, but if they have the chance to go home, will their homes still even be there? it's been a very difficult struggle for so many. >> jay, thank you. you've been reporting from the border of poland and ukraine, been there from the start. we can count on your continuing coverage. and, of course, marcus and laura, the "today" show will have lots more ahead coming up at 7:00. a look at the battle between putin and zelenskyy for the future of eastern europe. >> scott, thank you. turning back to our winter storm coverage, i want you to check out this video. this is just into our newsroom from a viewer named bart in los gatos. you can see the back yard covered in that snow. forget sitting on that patio furniture this morning.

an estimated perhaps 18 inches of snow out there. can you believe that? snow sounds strange just to say. wow. i just got a viewer picture in santa cruz, the same viewer that sent the picture of the dogs going out in the snow. it looks like tahoe out there. it's piled up so high, and hopefully everyone in those areas can just stay at home and enjoy it. you don't want to get out in it. it is still coming down, so we're going to see some additional accumulation, and as our temperatures start to warm up a little bit, we'll see it changing back and forth from rain to snow, as well as in some of the upper elevations the snow still continues. we have a lot of colors here, the dark blue is where we have really heavy snow over some of the hills above morgan hill, and over the reservoirs right now, over toward mount hamilton. we're also seeing it for the upper elevations of the santa

cruz mountains. basically in the south county, once it clears on either side, you'll see snow all around you. we'll see some heavy rain continue. as we move through palo alto, we're getting more reports of standing water on the roadway, people are spinning out. and we do have dangerous and hazardous travel through the east bay where it's been raining for hours and at times there's a bit of a wintery mix as well. we're seeing snow around mount diablo, but elsewhere, heavy rain continues to pour. it is getting a little lighter for parts of the north bay but it's been pretty steady and we're seeing waves of snow in much of napa county. looking at the bigger view where this storm is impacting pretty much all of california, and still the center of the storm is spinning off the coast. so with all of this energy there's a potential of more thunderstorms, more waves of rain. also gusty winds, with the

center of the storm here it's going to cause a lot more wind and also some isolated thunderstorms. install hail will be possible, but this will all start to taper off later on tonight. and more rain in the forecast for the weekend. hour-by-hour, at 11:00 there's some pink here indicating a wintery mix for the santa cruz mountains, even late morning. and there still could be snow on mount hamilton. elsewhere it's rain, and we'll see this into the afternoon starting to clear out, giving us a bit of a break. in the overnight hours in the hills, we are still looking at moisture streaming through, especially for the north bay, as those rain chances continue. but a bit of a break for saturday afternoon before the next storm comes in starting late morning on sunday, moving into the north bay and quickly sweeping across the rest of the bay area. we have more storms ahead, so this is a very active weather pattern, as we wrap up the month of february, even into monday, tuesday, wednesday, we're still looking at rain.
6:53 am
but then maybe after that we'll have a chance to breathe here, after all of this wet weather, and it's still going to be very cold. so there's a chance that we could see some wintery weather mixing in as well. another quarter of an inch of rain for the near term, but going into next week in total, we could have another 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rainfall before all is said and done, and a slight warm-up for the end of next week. well deserved. vianey, it's really starting to get hectic out there. >> it is. if you take mass transit, a reminder that b.a.r.t. is running on slower speeds to play it safe with the weather. ac transit seeing delays, along with caltrain because of the weather. expect to add about 10, 15, possibly more to your commute on mass transit. the san mateo bridge moving along, but there is a wind advisory from the chp for the majority of the bridges. today you're going to encounter not only accidents, a lot of flooded areas. this is new being reported 85, right before the 101 interchange.

it looks like one of the lanes near middlefield road has some major flooding on it, which is impacting some of the delays through that stretch. also, that earlier crash along the eastbound lanes on 80 has since been cleared. back to you. >> thank you very much. it is 6:53. happening within the hour, we just got an update from pg&e on the power outages throughout the bay area and the numbers are lower despite the recent overnight storm activity. the utility now says nearly 15,000 customers are without power. that is a 25% drop from yesterday. the vast majority is now in the east bay and south bay without power. crews have now restored many peninsula outages. >> and just ahead, a last look at this memorable bay area morning weather-wise, at lower elevations people in some neighborhoods are seeing more bay area snow than they have in years, or in some cases ever. in the south bay, it's also leading to major closures, one on highway 17. ahead, live coverage on your

look at the top stories on "today in the bay." this morning it really is all about that winter storm barreling across the bay area. >> in this case the emphasis is definitely on winter. we're talking the bay area's first winter storm advisory in more than a decade. our teams have been out in the field all morning long braving the cold. let's start with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live on highway 17, past where drivers are being forced to turn around in either direction, right, kris? >> reporter: that's right. so rain here where we are, but this is where folks are turning around because there's snow farther up on the summit on highway 17, a hard closure in place for both directions of highway 17 because of a jackknifed big rig. i want to snow you what those conditions were like this morning. there was rain, hail and then temperatures were about freezing, so it's been a mess up there. chp has chains on some patrol cars and even a caltrans crew got stuck. there is that hard closure and there is no estimated time of reopening at this point.
6:59 am
caltrans tells us that they have snow plows working not only here on highway 17, but also on highway 29 in napa, and at the caldecott tunnel on highway 24. they're calling this operation snowflake. might be tempting to get beautiful pictures that we saw yesterday with all of the snow, but today it is just sloppy, it is rainy, and it is slick out here. so stay put if you can. along highway 17, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good advice, thank you. and a reminder to down load our free nbc bay area app. you can get the latest alerts straight to your phone. >> we'll be tracking this for the next several hours. more off and on rain today, as well as spotty showers for the weekend and more storms ahead. >> and a look at the tri-valley drive times, westbound 580 is an issue, we've got icy conditions and a couple of accidents. 680, a delay of about 35 minutes and westbound 84 about 9 minutes.
