which is helping to divert some of the water out of the area. an historic west coast winter blast. whipping winds up to 75 miles per hour. it's the first blizzard warning ever for the san bernardino county mountains. some cars covered in at least a foot of snow. sunny san diego followed with its first blizzard warning in history. the golden state's weather creating hazardous whiteout conditions. 45 miles east of bakersfield, this big rig has to be towed. this was the scene in the santa cruz mountains. >> my vehicle is stuck. >> reporter: hail pummeled the tennis players. in napa county, spinouts on highway 29 leaving drivers in

disbelief. in the bay area, freemont peak turned into a winter wonderland for hikers. grapevine freeway shutdown because of dangerous snowy conditions. >> i have not seen snow since the late '50s. >> it has snowed in hollywood and i made a snowball. the proof is the sign in the back. >> reporter: the los angeles county is now bracing for flash flooding after receiving snow and an estimated 2 to 3 inches of rain. multiple vehicles here submerged on i-5. heavy snow fell in the sierra as many came out to see the rare winter weather leaving behind snowmen which will soon melt as the storms moves on. according to the national weather service, there is an avalanche warning at the california and nevada state line. it is expected to last a couple more hours.

peter and kristen. >> a ton of snow in the sierra. dana, thank you. for the big picture, let's bring in angie lassman for the look at the storm. where is this heading next? angie? >> we have a couple of things to talk about as where this system goes next. we are focusing on california and extending farther east. up and down the west coast, we have plenty of alerts. millions are under the alerts. 27 million with the flood watch in effect near l.a. county. we have flash flood warnings near l.a. as well. ample rain moving through and we are not done yet. look at the radar, the heavy rain worked up and down the coast. we see heavy rain in los angeles. if you are in san diego, you might wonder where all of the rain has been. it hasn't been as heavy for you. we will continue to see through the day today where you pick up on additional rainfall.

the system moves inland. we continue with the rain and heavy snow that makes it difficult on roadways through the day today where we pick up additional snowfall in the mountains. extending from l.a. to san diego. as far as san luis obispo. the heavy rain is focused in extreme southern california with the rainfall rates up to 1 inch an hour. it will be impressive. it will make for flooding karns. -- flooding concerns. how about the snowfall? up to 2 feet in places. that is focused more on the higher elevations. not as low snow levels as we saw yesterday. switching gears to the south. we continue to see warmth stretched across the gulf coast. temperatures in new orleans will reach 80 through the day today. this coming in 10 to 15 degrees above normal in spots. not as many record-breaking temperatures as we have seen

over the past couple days. they will be close like in tallahassee and pensacola with the 70s. savannah will hit 77. guys, back to you. >> that weather whiplash we have been watching. angie, thank you. we will check in with you in a little bit with the rest of the country's forecast. we turn to ukraine where the nation marked a somber anniversary on friday. one year since russian troops invaded and the brutal war began. we have erin mclaughlin in kyiv. erin, what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning, peter. last night, president biden ruling out sending f/16 fighter jets to ukraine for now. with an interview with nbc news, he said the u.s. will focus on the immediate battle field needs and including artillery and air defense and high mars.

this as the adviser to ukraine tells me this point in the conflict appears as both sides are running out of ammunition. we heard from the u.s. secretary of state call out president putin. >> members of the council should not fall into the false notion. vladimir putin started this war. one man can end it. >> reporter: also yesterday to mark the one-year anniversary of the invasion. president volodymyr zelenskyy gave a press conference. during that press conference, he expressed confidence that ukraine will win the war if the allies remain united. he also said he would like to meet with the leader of china. this as the united states alleges that chinese government is considering sending lethal aid to russia.

peter. >> erin mclaughlin on the ground in kyiv. thank you. president biden is spending the weekend in delaware, days after the surprise visit to ukraine. the war has dominated this first term. it comes as the first lady is speaking out on his plans to run for a second one. we have monica alba at the white house with more. >> reporter: good morning, kristen. this is a strong sign that president biden is ready to run again. something he is likely ready to do, but hasn't said, but his wife has said while traveling in kenya on friday. >> he is not done. he's not finished what he started. that's what's important. he was elected because people wanted steady leadership. >> reporter: she went on to say essentially the only thing left to do is pick the time and place for an official announcement. the president's aides say the first lady is one of the most

future. more than three weeks after the train derailment, this morning, east palestine residents still not backing down. >> it is about the people p and the well being of the people in the community. >> i'm scared because the train passes in front of my house. >> reporter: hundreds gathering at the high school to hear from erin brockovich. >> we have got to change practices. this end of the day profit over people has got to stop. >> we are all concerned. we want the best for our town. we are worried about our future. >> reporter: for some in the small community, brockovich's presence is sending a powerful message. officials say the air and municipal tap water are safe. some are skeptical of the government and railroad. >> i wish norfolk southern and others would step up and let us

good morning. thank you so much for joining us on this saturday, february 25th. i'm kira klapper. this week, we've seen this winter weather leading to snow in some unexpected places. there is heavy snow here on mount diablo. the mount diablo scenic boulevard is still closed this morning because of downed trees and limbs and icy conditions. but that didn't stop a lot of people from pulling out their sleds, snowboards and skis yesterday to enjoy the snow. rangers closed the road yesterday, and snowplows forced everyone off the road.

many hiked and biked up the mountain to get a piece of the action in the snow. one family wouldn't let the closures stop them. once the kids were out of school, they hiked 2 miles up the mountain to enjoy the kids' first ever experience in the snow. >> they go really fast. i flipped over. >> it was really fun. sledding was fun. we did a snowball fight. >> there's nobody up here. it's wide open. but you have to hike up. >> mount diablo park says it'll continue to assess the conditions and will update the public when the road reopens. perfect time now to check in with cinthia pimentel who has a look at the microclimate forecast. any breaks in the snow today? >> not really, until we have a couple hours out this morning. we have a storm system on storm ranger. right now, we have a lot of rain and some snow mix in the picture, so let's take it right to neighborhood by neighborhood to show you where the rain is falling right now and where some of the snow is. we just had a cell move down

around the capitola, and it is pushing over the mountains. white and purple color is the snow and also the rain mix. still very picturesque out there this morning, continuing on through the east bay, as well, as you drive just over 680. turn to your right, and you can see the snow on the mountaintops as the sunrise comes out. i'll take it further into the east bay. walnut creek, you're seeing rain. diablo range, we have the low snow mix. it'll continue for a couple hours, and those temperatures are very chilly right now, allowing the snow to stay put for just a little longer in the north bay as well as the inner parts of marin county. beautiful sight around mount st. helena, as well, as we've seen with the system. the freeze warning is going to last until 9:00 a.m. be ware of the chilly, frosty temperatures, especially in the sheltered valleys. i'll have more of all of this winter weather coming up in a few minutes. for now, back to you.

of five. we want to get to a serious headline right now from overnight. a tragic story from west. the officials say the medical flight carrying five people crashed in nevada overnight. there were no survivors. care flight says the single engine plane carrying a nurse and pilot and patient and family member. it went off the radar near stagecoach, nevada. the ntsb is investigating the cause. the officials at the university of idaho say the house where the four students were murdered will be demolished this spring. the president of the university called the razing of the house the healing step for the community. a former graduate student from the nearby college is charged in the killings. now to the world of sports and game for the history books. last night in los angeles,

thanks to this bucket from the kings deron fox in double overtime, the kings beat the clippers by the score of 176-175. the hometown clippers had a chance for a win at the buzzer, but the three point attempt did not go in. it was the nba's second highest scoring game ever. all right. to a murder trial that has captivated the nation. south carolina attorney alex murdaugh accused of gunning down his wife and son. on friday, murdaugh took the stand for a second day in the face-off with the lead prosecutor. we have nbc's catie beck with the latest from the south carolina courtroom. >> reporter: in the hot seat for the second day. alex murdaugh facing the cross-examination. >> the second you are confronted with the facts you cannot deny, you come up with a new lie. is that correct? >> i would disagree with that

proposition. >> reporter: prosecutors hitting hard on the murdaugh timeline inconsistency on the night of the murders and murdaugh pushing back in his defense. becoming combative on his memory of finding his wife's body. >> you remember why i went to her and for what reason. >> the only thing you are concerned about is yourself. >> reporter: answering with clear certainty and addressing the opioids in his pocket. >> you are taking 60 a day? >> there were days i took more than that. >> reporter: other times appearing unsteady. struggling with answers why he returned to the kennels and his phone was tracking 70 steps a minute and placing several phone calls in the row. >> i did not get on the

and the case goes to the jury. keep in mind this jury has heard a mountain of evidence from over 60 witnesses. it is tough to say how long the deliberations will take. peter and kristen. >> the nation captivated by the trial. catie beck, thank you. >> let's turn to nbc news analyst danny cevallos. you know it is difficult to put a defendant on the stand. murdaugh was there for over ten hours in two days. does he hurt or help? >> i think he hurt himself. everyone is all over the place on this one from talking to people. when you put your client on the stand, you shouldn't unless you can't get that information or evidence from any other source. the risk is too great. murdaugh is one of those clients and many attorneys know this client who think if i get on the

stand, i can explain everything away. he is trying to do that. prosecution made all its points many times. a massive liar. he lied to everybody, including about this case. whether or not the jury believes it or whether murdaugh is that persuasive, we don't know until the verdict. >> let me follow-up with the prosecution strategy, danny. they tried to do a lot. they painted him as a liar. they delved into the history of drug use and history of cheating clients out of money. was the prosecution successful or did they do too much? >> exactly. you pointed out something important. we know murdaugh was a liar. the prosecution hammered that home and asking that question 50 different ways. if murdaugh isacquitted, i think it would be the prosecution tried to do too much. they introduced financial evidence and created a motive that murdaugh killed his wife and son for sympathy because his

financial world was closing in on him. that may be a hard sell with the jury and unforced error. the prosecution didn't need it. they have so much else about murdaugh. you saw in that clip, lying saying i was cooperative except lying to law enforcement about being with the victims minutes before they died. instead, everyone is distracted talking about the motive that doesn't make sense. who would kill their wife and son because they had financial problems? i understand where the state is coming from. they have to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. that creates incentive for overkill. they may have tried too hard with the theory. >> danny, we expect closing arguments next week. what are you watching for? >> prosecution will see what we saw in the clip. reconstituted that this liar lied to everybody in his life including where he was during the murder. if he really cared about finding

the bad guy that he is talking about that may have been on his property, he would not lie to law enforcement. defense, unless they come up with the third party theory, they will sit back and say, look, there may not be a spector of a third party, but if you see them argue reasonable doubt or presumption of innocence, that means we don't have much. that is what we do. we sit back and point at the prosecution and say shoddy investigation. will it work? who knows? we have to wait and see. >> whatever your view, it has been a compelling case to watch. danny, we appreciate your expertise. thank you. all right. let's check in with angie lassman who is back with the forecast. you are watching the wild weather out west and storms in the plains? >> we will see the cross country storm start to gear up for tomorrow.

this week, we've seen this winter weather leading to snow in some unexpected places, including heavy snow on mount diablo. the scenic boulevard is still closed this morning due to downed trees and limbs and icy conditions. that didn't stop people from pulling out their sleds, snowboards and skis yesterday. rangers closed the road and snowplows forced everyone off the road. many people hiked and biked up the mountain to get their own little piece of the action in the snow. one alamo family we spoke with wasn't going to let the road closure stop them. after school got out, with the youngest on dad's shoulders there, they hiked 2 miles up the mountain to enjoy the kids' first ever experience in the snow. >> they go really fast. i flipped over. >> it was really fun. sledding was fun. we did a snowball fight. >> there's nobody up here. it's wide open, but you have to hike up. >> mount diablo park says it'll continue to assess the conditions and update the public when the road reopens.

let's check in with cinthia pimentel, who has a quick look at our microclimate weather alert. >> looks so fun. he was having a great time. today you might get the opportunity to do so again. once we mix out of the rain, make sure you bundle up because you don't want to get those fingers all cold out there. we're taking it to storm ranger, seeing where the heavy rain and the snow mix is right now. still staying put over just east of san jose, along mt. hamilton. down morgan hill and gilroy. along 101 this morning, when the sunrise comes up, snap the pictures and share them with us. we'll share some on air this morning. the cell is lingering over vallejo. if you are driving over the bridge, have both hands on the wheel. we also found some dusting on mount tam. i saw pictures on social media there. people taking their skis out, having a great time. that'll continue a couple hours as we move through the storm
