weather systems including reports of nine tornadoes in the midwest in the last 24 hours. >> in all, more than 60 million people are under wind alerts this morning, with nearly 60 million facing some sort of winter alert. some areas bracing for up to a foot of snow. >> we've got al's full forecast in a bit. we begin with nbc's morgan chesky in norman, oklahoma, this morning. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, a terrifying night for so many oklahomans after a reported seven tornadoes struck. another two in texas. and we are seeing the damage firsthand. a car tossed into a home. a roof ripped right off and debrees scattered in just about every direction you look. hard to believe this stemmed from the same california storm dumping feet of snow and rain and unfortunately today that severe weather threat is far from over. wild weather across the central u.s. overnight. blasting the plains with a powerful and intense storm system known as a derecho which

at a minimum has wind damage and typically causes it in one direction, along a straight path. tornadoes touching down in oklahoma and kansas. >> lightning! >> reporter: leaving neighborhoods in ruins. and completely destroyed homes. flipping cars and knocking out power to thousands of residents. wind gusts topping 100 miles an hour. also, whipping through parts of the texas panhandle. the national weather service tweeting yesterday, people in mclean should take cover now. meanwhile, west coasters digging out and drying out after the pummeling rain and snow. the mountains of southern california blanketed up to seven feet of snow in certain areas. with roads impassable, some mountain reds blazed their own trail on skis. >> we've never seen this much snow come down this long, this hard since 31 years. >> reporter: torrential rainfall brought treacherous flooding, cars stranded as the water rushed over roads in los

angeles. rescuers saving victims such as this incident captured by the pasadena fire department. an suv, teetering before it plunged in the river. >> i'm glad we're back. >> reporter: with tens of thousands still without power across southern california, yosemite national park will remain closed to visitors until march. oregon declares a state of emergency in certain regions battling frigid temperatures. while some battled hazardous conditions not often seen, others took advantage of the rare snowfall. back here in oklahoma, we will have this scene unfortunately showing up more and more as the sun comes up today. we do know that there are several reports injuries. about a dozen in the norman area. none appear to be life threatening. more than 10,000 people in oklahoma remain without power right now. but to the north of us in michigan a power crisis in

realtime from the winter storm last week. more than 120,000 people are still without electricity there. and for those in california who were still reeling from the snow and the rain, they need to buckle up because that same storm system could bring more weather their way. savannah? >> morgan chesky, leading us off, thank you so. >> much to talk about in the weather department. mr. roker is very busy on a monday morning. that winter weather is on the move. >> the irony, where morgan is right now, norman, oklahoma, that's the home of the severe storms prediction center, the storm prediction center. those are the folks that predict the tornadoes and put out the watches and warnings and the risk areas. so those poor folks had to deal with that. 56 million people from the west coast through the upper midwest, into the northeast, under winter storm warnings, winter storm watch, winter storm advisories especially here in the northeast. from minneapolis, portland, down to new york, and williamsport, we're looking at also heavy showers and thunderstorms, so we've got a risk of severe

weather today, just to the south of chicago. and lexington, kentucky, columbus, indianapolis, slight risk of severe weather. system will be pushing to the east, bringing snow and ice, from the great lakes, into the northeast, cold enough here in the northeast, we may see appreciable snow in new york city, and along the i-95 corridor tomorrow. the dual low pressure systems move out to the east and snow will continue for new england, through the day tomorrow. look at some of these snow totals here in the northeast. augusta, maine. 4-6 inches. boston, 2-4. 4-8 in hartford. 3-6 in syracuse. new york city could see 2-5 inches. significant icing in wisconsin. upwards of a quarter of an inch. could be power outages. and icing toward the allegations, and then the rainfall, not quite so bad, the heaviest will be in northern indiana and ohio. guys? >> all right. al, come back to you in just a minute >> thank you, al. turning now to the war in ukraine with fighting in the second year, the u.s. is warning china of serious consequences if it provides lethal military aid

to russia. nbc's erin mclaughlin joins us now from kyiv with the very latest erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah overnight there was yet another wave of drone attacks across ukraine. this time, killing two people in the western portion of the country. that according to ukrainian officials. as russia shows no signs of backing down overnight, russia targeting ukraine with new drone strikes, as fighting wages on in the front lines in the east. heavy shelling killing multiple people over e weekend. as russian fors continue pushing into the besieged city of bakhmut it comes amid growing fears china may be thinking about inserting itself into the war in ukraine. new intelligence suggests china is considering supplying russia with artillery and ammunition. according to three u.s. officials familiar with the matter the white house warning china against doing so. >> their weapons would in effect be used for the slaughter of people in ukraine. >> reporter: just last week,

beijing put forward a 12-point peace plan with few details but calling on both ukraine and russia to de-escalate the war. ukraine's president saying he was interested in meeting with china's president xi to discuss that plan to end the conflict. but in an interview with abc, president biden was skeptical. >> i see nothing in the plan that would indicate that there is something that would be beneficial to anyone other than russia. >> reporter: russia's president putin lashing out at the west in an interview that aired sunday telling russian state tv, the west has one goal to disband the former soviet union. adding that russia needs to take into account the nuclear capabilities meanwhile, ukraine's president zelenskyy predicting that putin will be killed by his own inner circle, making the blunt statement in a recently released ukrainian documentary saying the documentary, saying the predators will devour a predator zelenskyy vowing to liberate crimea and returning ukraine to every corner of ukraine.

something one of zelenskyy's senior advisers tells me is possible. is is realistic, though, for ukraine to take back crimea, given the russians are so thoroughly entrenched in crimea? >> translator: it looks realistic in a year russia would issue a military resolve with thousands and thousands of troops that's why when i'm asked whether something is realistic, i say undoubtedly. >> reporter: this morning, china is hitting back at the united states a spokeswoman accusing the u.s. of spreading disinformation. meanwhile, the kremlin is declining to comment on the allegations that china is considering providing russia with lethal aid. savannah >> erin mclaughlin in kyiv for us, thank you. we turn now to that new intelligence report from the u.s. energy department it suggests covid-19 likely originated from a laboratory leak in wuhan, china nbc's kelly cobiella is on the story this morning what you can tell us about the

findings >> we're nearly three years on from the start of the pandemic and there is still more questions than answers when it comes to the origins of covid-19 but this new report suggests that it actually did come from a lab in wuhan, china. that so-called lab leak theory that's what two sources with direct knowledge of the report told nbc news. the sources said that according to this classified report, the department of energy has now concluded with low confidence where coronavirus originated one source cautioning that this is not being viewed as hugely significant because of disagreements among different intelligence agencies. the source told nbc news that key lawmakers on the house and senate intelligence committees were actually briefed on this report more than a month ago china is also weighing in overnight, saying that officials should stop, quote, hyping up the lab leak theory, and politicizing the origin-tracing process. savannah >> well, speaking of politics, there are other investigations

into this very issue. >> yes, that's right and jake sullivan, national security adviser, was asked about the investigating process over the weekend on "cnn sunday." he said that, look, there are a varieties of views within the intelligence agencies, he said that a number of the agencies have said they just don't have enough information to be sure on the origins of covid-19. he said the president has repeatedly directed every intelligence agency to put effort and resources to get to the bottom of this and specifically requested that the national labs, which are part of the department of energy, work on finding answers. now, the d.o.e. spokesperson did comment on this to nbc news saying the department of energy continues to support the thorough, careful, and objective work of our intelligence professionals in investigating the origins of covid-19 as the president directed a spokesperson for the house

oversight committee is also commenting on this, saying in part, we're reviewing the classified information, provided, but republican lawmakers are also on top of this they're pushing for more investigations they want extensive hearings, as well and they want the biden administration to release more information to the american people savannah >> we'll watch as this develops. kelly, thank you. also this morning, cleanup resuming at the site of that toxic train derailment in ohio after a weekend that saw new concerns emerge about where that contaminated soil and waste is being shipped. nbc's george solis has the very latest on this story george, good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning. the big news here is that federal authorities are now allowing norfolk southern, the train's operator, to resume disposal operations of that hazardous material at that derailment site. that material now heading to two sites here in ohio this comes just days after officials in multiple states raised flags saying they were

blind-sided by the arrival of tons of contaminated water and soil to their facilities this morning, environmental protection agency is allowing norfolsouthern to resume shipments of hazardous wastes from the site of the toxic train derailment in east palestine, ohio. >> we know it is far better to have it safely stored in a professional construct and monitored disposal facility than remain here any longer than necessary. >> reporter: one of the new facilities receiving the waste, east liverpool, ohio the mayor of that city reacting. >> you can see it from my backyard and it is literally in some people's backyards. so it is definitely concerning >> reporter: the announcement coming days after officials in texas and michigan complained they were not warned truckloads of contaminated dirt and wastewater were delivered to epa facilities in their states >> not knowing that they're coming, which way they're coming, how safe the trucks are

that are coming, is something that has got us all very, very irritated. >> reporter: back in east palestine, health and safety concerns remain rampant, more than three weeks after dangerous fumes spread across the community and beyond now, federal teams, including the cdc, are on the ground to interview residents about their symptoms and health concerns >> we have eyes burning. i couldn't stop sneezing for a half an hour >> reporter: some residents near the derailment have been diagnosed with bronchitis and other conditions that officials suspect are linked to chemical exposure even as state and federal officials say the air quality remains normal and the tapwater is safe, the community is stil stocking up on air filters and cases free ttled water. >> what does that tell you, that it is going out as quickly as it is coming in >> people need help. >> it is needed. >> people need more help than any time. >> reporter: and having a ripple effect on many local businesses. >> businesses are shut down. they lost days of income they couldn't work for many days it is not just the health

miller with the left hand. >> reporter: university of alabama is having a huge season. led by star freshman brandon miller but instead of celebrating, the school is facing increasing pressure to take miller off the court. investigators say in january, miller brought a handgun to former teammate darius miles moments before it was used to murder jamea harris, a 23-year-old mother the gun belonged to miles, according to police. brandon miller's attorney says he was asked to return the gun and that he never touched it, was not involved in its exchange to mr. davis in any way an never knew that illegal activity involving the gun would occur. miles was kicked off the team and now charged with capital murder, along with another man, michael davis, who allegedly pulled the trigger miller has not been charged with a crime. and has continued to play basketball >> law enforcement must have been really convinced of miller's lack of knowledge or intent to not charge him >> reporter: but jamea harris' parents say miller should not be allowed to play.

in an interview with "usa today," harris' mother called the school's decision unimaginable. >> she has a 5-year-old son waiting at home for his mom to come home. >> reporter: adding to the controversy, before saturday's matchup against arkansas, the top nba prospect received a mock pat-down from a teammate alabama's coach said they have been doing that all year and done have anything to do with the murder >> regardless, it is not appropriate. it's been addressed and i can assure you it definitely will not happen again >> reporter: march madness is set to tip off in just over two week, when miller and the university of alabama could be the tournament's top seed. >> unless there are criminal charges and new revelations they're going to stay the course this is their best player. this is the highest scoring freshman in college basketball >> the university of alabama has said that based on all the information they've received, brandon miller is not considered a suspect in this case, only a cooperating witness. that is why he remains an active member of the team the case against miles davis will now head to a grand jury

legitimately lawyers this concept of jury nullification, laura jarrett, this idea, i think you heard the defense float this on friday, that you know what on the financial crimes alone, he is going to probably spend the rest of his life in prison maybe, maybe we shouldn't convict him for the murders because of that alone. is that a reasonable defense >> it is an interesting strategy, right? because first, the defense didn't want any of the financial crime information to come in but once it does, you see them sort of telegraph to the jury, and certainly asking murdaugh on the stand, you are actually charged with 99 different financial crimes and the answer to that, of course, is yes now, he hasn't pled guilty o anything like that, in those cases, but it seems to be telegraphing to the jury, even if you find him innocent in this case, he is likely to serve some prison time. and gives them an out. now we'll see whether they take that out. >> by the way, it can't be like an overt defense strategy. >> no. >> you're not allowed to ask the jury to nullify the law. that is saying jury

nullification is basically telling the jurors in so many words, ignore the law. justice will come in a different way. >> that's why you are the chief legal correspondent. >> i'm looking at laura now. either way, we have closing arguments coming up up and this is the key moment. certainly for the defense but the prosecutor, got to pull the strings together. >> they have to tell a coherent story. on friday we saw a sort of a shifting motive emerge, perhaps the idea that his family had cued in on his drug use and they were going to confront him about that that is not the story we have been hearing all of the trial. the whole trial has been financial crimes and distracting from the financial crimes and the murders and the question is it is a plausible theory that made any sense and now the story of the drugs, i think it is condition fusing to the jury and i think they need to stick with it for the closing. >> the defense strategy apparently is going to be ou guy is a thief, our guy is a liar, and you heard all of that, but he is no killer.

it's about redemption. >> redemption from what? >> from letting people down. >> so guilt? it's about guilt >> oh, sam, good morning >> good morning. >> the series looks absolutely fantastic by the way. >> thank you. >> absolutely fantastic. so i was a bit surprised to read that your audition for this role did not go perhaps as well as you had hoped. is that true >> that is correct >> what happened >> it is about as bad as you can imagine an audition to go really i think i was, i was asked to prepare a 1970s rock song but my knowledge of that particular era of music, in fact any music, was kind of nonexistent. so i went through a play list, or a compilation that was sort of on apple music, found a song that i thought fit in my range, elton john's song, which i thought was very rock and roll >> they used to sing a beatles song, right? >> basically, the song wasn't quite what they were looking for

and they came in with a guitar and said, do you know this song "come together" and i said yes, michael jackson. so that's is where i was starting this journey. so i've learned something though i've been on a roller coaster. >> and here's the thing for folks who don't know, i mean, you didn't grow up singing you actually learned to sing for this role. >> yes well, i've done a few musical theater shows growing up i was in like "jesus christ superstar," "les miserables," high school standard level and this is the first time in a recording studio the first time i've sung rock music. >> i want to play just a clip here of you and your co-star singing together because i think it is pretty fascinating when you consider where you were versus where you ended up. i think we have that clip.

granddaughter, did that come up with the shoot requesting? >> she definitely doesn't carry the weight of her, you know, of her ancestors on her shoulders, like you wouldn't know to meet her in person, i don't think, she is just a very grounding, very free spirited, just kind, generous person. but, yes, there was a day where we were on set and there is a cafe sequence kind of late in the filming process, and me and her sat there quietly in between takes and all of a sudden we started hearing an elvis song over the sort of speakers. and it was like a moment where you just look at someone and said oh, my gosh, that is your granddad that is your granddad. my granddad is a children's entertainer, dresses up as a clown, and you know, it is kind of wild to be reminded, i think. >> sam, thank you. job well done. >> thank you >> it looks fantastic. sam will come back by the way in the fourth hour, and some of the "daisy jones & the six" cast will join us for the third hour, as well. we should note "daisy jones & the six" premieres on prime

it is dion's chicago dream in 2020, after the success of the community fridge, dion set out to feed more families. his communication skills learned in the navy, dion was able to raise money to buy fresh produce to deliver right to someone's door. >> we will be in all seven locations. >> reporter: if you asked dion, the way he feeds, with the most, to the insecure, doesn't work. he has seen that broken system up close. >> i realized nothing has changed. still feeding people outside they're facing the elements. unlabeled cans off brand. you know, oatmeal. >> reporter: people who sign up for dion's nonprofit delivery service get a dream box stuffed with fruit and vegetables. to do it, dion's team took over an old ymca building where they packed the boxes, 14 employees who he plays at least $20 an hour a fleet of vehicles to make the rounds to more than 560 families, handing out about 23,000 pounds of food a month. this man was one of the first
