legality of president biden's proposal to forgive student loans for borrowers. brie jackson joins us with more. good morning student debt is a major issue and very polarizing. how did we get here? >> student debt forgiveness was a major issue for president biden on the campaign trail, and the white house unveiled its plan for student debt relief back in august the proposal would forgive up to $10,000 in student debt for people earning less than $125,000 per year. and cancel up to $20,000 for pell grant recipients. while millions of americans applied for the program, it was met with immediate backlash and blocked by a federal appeals court in november. the supreme court will hear two different challenges starting today. one is from a group of six republican-led states that sued last sent. they argue the president overstepped his authority by taking the action without approval from congress the other challenge comes from two student borrowers who claim

that they would be excluded from the plan they argue that the biden administration deprived them of their procedural rights by not allowing the public to weigh in. president biden acknowledged the challenges during an event for black history month at the white house. >> my administration is making ourcase in the supreme court, and i'm confident the legal authority to carry that plan is there. i promise you. i have your back and this is so much more we can do >> reporter: the supreme court also agreed to take on a case over the constitutionality of the consumer protection bureau >> a lot at stake. brie, thank you. now to breaking news the u.s. marshal service says it's suffered a major security breach according to a spokesperson, the ransomware attack earlier this month attacked a system that

contained sensitive information including identifiable details about subjects of investigations, third parties and some marshal service employees. a senior law enforcement official familiar with the breach tells nbc news that this database did not contain any information about people in a witness protection program the agency says the system was disconnected from the network. now the justice department has opened an investigation. the fbi have arrested a man called the sedition panda for storming the capitol during the january 6 riot jesse james rumson was allegedly seen wearing a panda head and entered that you emergency fire escape he's facing several charges including resisting or impeding an over. including to the fbi after date he encouraged rioters to breach another door and grabbed an officer's face shield. now to the alex murdaugh double murder trial where the defense has rested it came after a couple of notable courtroom successes for the defense that day the judge granted their request to take the jurors on a tour of
