his dismissal. we have an update on the drought into the news room. it's thursday morning, and a good morning to you. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. i am marcus washington. >> i am kris sanchez. laura garcia has the morning off. after the news on the storms, you have the data on the drought. >> yeah, lately we have had so much rain and sierra snow, and we are reaping the benefits of that. take a look at what the drought monitor looked like across the region before the update came out this morning. in northern california, we have a lot of orange which is severe drought in the bay area. we are still in a moderate drought as we get a closer look at the way it looks now, and we are no longer in a moderate drought. it's abnormally dry, and for much of the central sierra, it has been taken out of even

abnormally dry conditions. there are still areas where we are seeing at least moderate to severe drought. that's further to the north as well as parts of the southern sierra, but around the bay area we have seen a significant improvement and we are abnormally dry as we look back at our water year. i want to look back around lake county. we're still in a moderate drought there, but it's severe as you head off towards the north and east. mike, you are tracking a new crash. what is going on? >> we talked about the issue on the bay bridge, and that cleared. we were talking about that crash on west 80 at powell. there it is. we turned the camera towards the southeast shore freeway. two lanes are blocked and this is the commute direction, a critical part of westbound 80. towards the bay bridge you are jamming up through berkeley, and golden gate is the worst of it.

this stretch of westbound 80 going to be a tough one. you saw crews on scene but there are possible injuries from the crash. that's the biggest issue for the eastbound and the biggest issue for our commute. more folks may take 580 west in order to avoid the backup getting towards the berkeley curb. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive, and we are maintaining speeds in san josé with your slowing and the build from 680 to up around oakland road. 6:02 right now. a north bay high school is that closed where a student lost his life during an altercation in a classroom. >> bob redell is with us. his family said his death could have been avoided. >> that's correct. that was brought up to us last

night at the memorial. the memorial for the 16-year-old jaden pienta. he and a friend walked into an art class at montgomery high, and he confronted a freshman in front of two dozen students and four instructors. the 15-year-old student pulled out a knife and stabbed pienta three times and pienta died in the hospital, and the injured friend survived and attended last night's vigil, actually. the 15-year-old was found hiding in a river bed. and the family criticized the school for not doing enough to prevent the killing. >> slashed all four tires on his car, and instead of suspending this kid they let him come back to class. >> when he was stabbed today,

nobody called the police. >> a student called 911, and the school didn't do anything, and they knew they had problems beforehand. >> how is she going to get through this? how do you let her bury her baby? i don't understand. >> the school district superintendent release add statement that reads in part, i understand that people want to have broader conversations about campus safety, and that will happen. however, right now our students, staff and family need our strength and positivity to rebuild and restore confidence in our community. the school board eliminated their resource officer in 2020, and santa rosa police say they received 97 service calls at that high school over the past 12 months. >> that's a lot of calls for service. thank you, bob. and representative mike thompson that represents that area said

his thoughts are with the student and the community and school. today the first openly transgender lutheran bishop will file a suit against the church. he later resigned under pressure tied to the removal of another church pastor. yesterday he filed a complaint accusing the church of harassment and defamation. he was accused of being a racist after following the church's directives. a follow-up for you in san francisco, and new calls for a concern about the city's deadly drug crisis. the advocates are concerned about what they describe as open-air drug markets operating freely in places like the

tenderloin. organizers say people in san francisco are dying from overdoses at a rate of two per day, and many connected to fentanyl. the crime activity is unavoidable. >> the crisis is at its worse in the tenderloin. this is our city's neighborhood with the highest density of families, children and immigrants. it should not be able to become the sort of open-air drug market, which it is. >> the group is calling for supervisors in the next two week to pass supplemental funding to combat drug dealing. a lot of teens are struggling following the years of pandemic. the recent cdc study showed between 2011 and 2021 the percentage of high school students that felt constantly sad increased. nearly 60% of female students

and 70% of lgbtq plus students said they experienced feelings of sadness and hopelessness. a new bay area behavioral health organization said this. >> the internet is shortening sleep about 45 minutes a night, and that's leading to anxiety and irability among girls and aggression among boys. >> he adds it's important for parents to have real conversations with their kids. >> they need to model that talking about emotions and feelings and being able to say i'm having a difficult time or i am confused, or i am going through emotional pain and i want to talk with you about it, parents need to model some of that behavior. >> it will be a lot for parents today because he says that

another issue compounding this is a shortage of mental health providers to help teens in need. it's 6:08 just about now. we are looking live at 880 in oakland where today concerned parents will present recent findings on what they call the educational divide. there was a report on public school performance since the start of the pandemic. according to research, 1 in 3 oakland school students can read at grade level, and in math 1 in 4 students are performing at grade level. oakland schools have yet to issue a statement on the findings. today's meeting is scheduled for 6:00 this evening. now to new video of lake del valle in alameda county. the park remains closed due to storm drainage. this is east shore trail up to badger cove.

recently the department of water resources started to release water flow in hopes to reduce the flooding. taking a live look at san francisco international -- no, that's the skyline and that's better, right? that looks fantastic there this morning. we know it's very cold out there, kari. we're expecting more rain, too. >> yes, we are. enjoy the sunshine. i turned the camera around the other way to look at the bay bridge, and this is the view. didn't know my dress would match this as well as the drought monitor update. yes, seeing a lot of yellow and it's a great start after getting that news there. it's 41 degrees as you head out the door, and we are going to see more sunshine today. we only make it into the mid-50s here. across the bay area we see temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to the mid-40s along the coastline. we do still have the freeze warning in effect until 9:00 as

we continue to watch out for that. high temperatures today reach in the upper 50s. we will talk about the changes this weekend. mike, you are seeing changes in the gas prices? >> yeah, we don't like that. they are going up, the gas prices. solano county has no reports of anything below 4 bucks. and then 4.15 at diamond shamrock in fairfield. and the lowest of our lows is still at spartan, near the home of the spartans at spartan gas. a big overview and a big alert here for the bart system. no service for the green line

weekend forecast. we will take a look at that before you make plans. that's coming up in a few minutes. we are quite literally watching this crash scene westbound 80. they have flares out and two lanes blocked for your commute direction into the berkeley curb, and it's right around powell where folks are getting on the freeway, but in richmond, a big jam. no service for bart's green line in addition to the delays earlier. we will track the delays and the ripple, coming up. wall street is set for mixed opens. the markets were mostly lower yesterday. stocks under pressure as yields on treasury bonds jump, and on fears of inflation and rising interest costs. the focus today, jobless claims, productivity and labor costs. plus, earnings from best buy, macy's and costco. zoom was one of the fastest-growing apps during the pandemic and now the company is slashing jobs as we return in

person. it cut 1,500 jobs last month, which is a bit more than 15% of its entire workforce. now we are learning about 200 of those jobs were in the downtown san josé offices. the company's ceo wrote in a blog post that layoffs came as the world continues to adjust to life after the pandemic. zoom is the latest in a series of layoffs in big tech. we are keeping a tally of the companies cutting jobs. go to nbcbayarea.com/layofftracker for a full list. and then ford will penalize drivers late on their car payments and can go as far as locking them out of the car, and get this, it's even said the self-driving vehicle will drive itself to the impound lot. ford filed the application in 2021 but it was not published until last week.

as our temperatures start out cool, we will be in the low 40s in san josé but headed for the upper 50s for this afternoon. reaching 57 in dublin as well, and 57 in oakland. 59 in novato. it's about the same tomorrow with mid to upper 50s around the bay area. 50s near the coastline. going into saturday, a little cooler. that's when the rain will be returning. as we time it out, it won't be raining the entire day. here's how you can make plans. by midafternoon we are seeing it already passing through much of the north bay hitting parts of the south bay and east bay. snow tapping our bay area hills and mountains. there will be a break go into saturday afternoon and then the next round of rain comes in late saturday night into sunday. we will see more rain in the forecast going into the first part of next week, as well as snow coming down to about 2,000 feet. we are also going to keep the cold temperatures with the

possibility of at least another inch of rainfall in the forecast over the next few days. we will see that next storm coming in, hitting us saturday off and on, and then on sunday it continues in waves, not raining the whole time. next week finally it clears up. mike, you are tracking a crash. what is going on? >> well, i am calling it an alert on the east bay east shore freeway. the berkeley curb, this is powell, where you get on the freeway. if you use the frontage road, you are okay, but it's jammed up. possible injuries reported but no further details. i am thinking not any major injuries. they are clearing it as fast as they can. we still have the bart issue. no green service out of the berryessa line back to you.

she's looking at freezing temperatures down south. >> yeah, we are watching the south county, and we have dipped down well below freezing. gilroy, 27 degrees. elsewhere we have seen breezes to keep temperatures slightly above freezing, but you may have frost on the windshield as you head out for work. areas in purple, freeze warnings. in brentwood it's 39 degrees. we will slowly warm up today as we keep the sunshine. more changes in the forecast heading into the weekend and we will talk about that. mike, you are tracking a crash and a big backup. >> yeah, the tow truck loaded the last vehicles involved in the crash on the back of it. hopefully that will clear soon. westbound 80 still down to lanes as you travel down the east shore freeway past powell.

close to his vest. and san francisco local assembly member is aiming at reducing our paper receipts unless we specifically request them. many stores already give shoppers the choice between digital and paper receipts, but this bill will make it universal. experts say the receipts are hard on the environment because of a special coding that makes it hard to recycle. avalanche fears, triggering a wave of evacuation orders in the area of lake tahoe, and in some cases the evacuation orders are mandatory and in other areas it's a warning. an avalanche happened tuesday night in olympic valley.

unlike yesterday, thursday has a lighter volume than a wednesday. we are 45 minutes to an hour through highway 4 in the bogged down traffic in richmond. golden gate to the approach, the metering lights are on at the bay bridge. this stretch, 101 express lanes, we have seen the signs for a long time but they are going begin charging for the tolls so have the transponder, there's a fine and it's more than paying for the lanes. 680 will not have the closure over the weekend because of the forecast kari is talking about. back to you. >> thanks, mike. the price of insulin becoming a lot more affordable, but experts say maybe not for everyone. >> they may continue to pay a high out-of-pocket cost even if the price of insulin is reduced.

good thursday morning. right now it's 6:42. as you are getting the kids all bundled up and ready for school in gilroy, it's freezing and will stay freezing at drop-off time. it's going to be 57 degrees at pickup. a cool but sunny day. we will talk about the drought update coming up in a few minutes. we are looking amount a complete recovery for the east shore freeway at the scene of the crash. we still have delays. westbound 80 boggs down through richmond and berkeley. over an hour registering on the travel time from highway 4. things are starting to improve through the area approaching the bay bridge toll plaza where you will see a lot more traffic. we will look at that shot coming up. antony blinken and the russian foreign minister chatted briefly at the g20 meeting in india. it marks the first meeting

cap for seniors, and younger diabetics were still paying higher rates. doctors, they know how critical the drug is. as far as other insulin drugmakers, they pointed to their own savings plans for participants >> we know managing diabetes is costly for a lot of people, and this is not the only cost factor. how soon can people expect this? >> it will take affect immediately. the cap applies to those with private insurance, and others will be eligible as long as they sign up for a savings card through the company. even with a reduction in the cost of insulin, managing diabetes is still very expensive. >> people with diabetes have a

lot of health care costs, so there are multiple visits to the doctor that can involve co pays, and there's durable medical equipment like insulin pumps that are also very expensive, so they will continue to pay a high out-of-pocket cost even if insulin is reduced. >> again, the price change goes into effect immediately for those with private insurance. >> thank you, brie. new this morning, a recent dui arrest in santa cruz leads to the recovery of some exotic animals. chp says officers arrested the suspect on monday and that's when they found sugar gliders in her car. the animals are similar to a possum, but they are from australia, and they are illegal to have here in california because they are a threat to

native wildlife. state fish and wildlife teams took those animals. they are kind of ugly cute. >> no, they are cute. i will not get one because it's illegal, but i want one. >> okay. scientists identified a great corridor in giza. this is outside of the 456-foot tall pyramid. >> as today in the bay's molly hunter explains, it was all part of research done by an international team. >> yeah, kris and marcus, this is super exciting. overnight the ministry of antiquities, a team from around the world, announced what they say may be the biggest discovery in the last century. the scientists discovered what they believed was a corridor behind the chevron stones, and

it's one of the most recognizable and most visited structured in the world. in the last seven years, they have used high-tech cutting-edge technology, and they have been able to without digging or excavating or removing stones determined what is behind there. they have gotten a camera around the stones to give us a look inside. back to you. >> can't wait to see that. if you looked skyward last night, this is jupiter and venus, and this is the view from scotland. you don't have to go that far to see it, though. just look up. tonight they will be visible and will start to separate in the

days ahead. >> when i was little, i worried they were going to bump into each other. it's just perspective. good news on the drought monitor front? >> yeah. we know it has been super wet this winter, and it's helping us out in terms of our drought, so let's get a lack at how it looked last week. we are seeing all across the west there's a pretty significant drought that continues. even last week we were in a moderate drought. now as we get a closer look and zoom into the update this morning, we saw them completely take out the central sierra from a drought status. it's no longer even abnormally dry. it's also improving quite a bit for the central valley. here in the bay area, no longer a drought. we are just abnormally dry. we may also continue to see more significant improvements over the next several weeks. as we get a closer look at the

bay area, once again, these areas in yellow are abnormally dry when you look at the long-range view of how much we have measured, but we are in a moderate drought for northern sonoma county, and clearlake. we saw state-wide improvements in the drought, and so now just 50% of the state is in a moderate drought. we will track more rain in the forecast. going into the weekend, the next round of rain starts to come in on saturday morning. i know we are making plans for the weekend. first starting in the north bay, there, and we will see snow in the upper elevations above 2,000 feet. that continues to spread across much of the bay area, right around noon. notice how quickly it's in and out of here. if you have saturday afternoon plans, there may be a nice break for you. it will be coming back saturday night and continuing off and on throughout the day on sunday.

we are going to receive more widespread rain between sunday, monday and tuesday, over the course of four days we are going to see off and on showers. not raining the whole time, but we will keep rain in the forecast as it comes in waves. rainfall totals for most of us, at least an inch and maybe higher for parts of the bay area. a look at the 7-day forecast. if you were hoping for a warm-up, well, we don't see it anytime soon. we are only going to reach in the low 60s for today and tomorrow. then we are back for highs in the low 50s for the weekend. more frosty and freezing mornings ahead for the middle of next week. mike, you were checking in on the buildup at the bay bridge? >> it's here. for those of us just joining, it may not be a surprise. for those watching in the last half hour, there was a crash but that crash has now cleared.

juniors confronted a 15-year-old freshman in front of four instructors and a dozen students. the 15-year-old freshman pulled out a knife and stabbed pienta three times in the upper body, and stabbed his friend once. pienta died in the hospital, and the suspect was found hiding in a river bed. jaden's family believes the suspect slashed his tires as part of the ongoing feud. that's a statement from the school district on your screen, the school's superintendent. she writes i understand people want to have a broader conversation about campus safety, however right now our students and staff and families need our strength and positivity. santa rosa police say they have responded to 97 service calls at this one high school over the past 12 months.
