refusing to distribute abortion pills, in some states where abortion is still legal. the impact this could potentially have if other pharmacy chains follow suit. and unsubscribed. pop star billy eilish ditching all of her social media, why she decided right now is the time to cut ties. we begin this hour with that breaking news. >> alex murdaugh sentenced to life in prison, without parole, for murdering his wife and youngest son. the disgraced former lawyer stood before the judge this morning, his demeanor did not change as he heard his sentence read allowed. murdaugh's lawyers say they will appeal the conviction. >> the jury deliberated for just under three hours yesterday, and found murdaugh guilty on two counts of murder, and two counts of possession of a deadly weapon during a violent crime. before murdaugh was sentenced this morning, he professed his innocence. >> i'm innocent, i would never hurt my wife maggie, and i would never hurt my son paul paul.
12:02 pm
>> nbc news correspondent jay gray is outside the courthouse in south carolina, also with us, nbc news legal analyst danny cevallos. jay, first to you. a dramatic sentencing hearing this morning, as we heard from the judge there. talk about what the judge had to say and what we heard from murdaugh as well. >> reporter: absolutely, aaron, it was a brief sentencing hearing, but a fascinating exchange between judge newman and alex murdaugh, the judge touching on his opposed addiction, his fall from grace as a lawyer, a member of a prominently legally influential family in this area for decades and as he called them web of lies saying the most telling was likely when he told investigators and anyone who would listen for more than a year that he was not at the scene of the crime when his wife and son were killed. >> then, after all of the witnesses placed you at the scene of the crime, at the last
12:03 pm
minute, the last minutes, or days, you switched courses, and admitted to being there. and then that necessitated more lies and continued to lie, and when will it end? it has already ended for many who have heard you and concluded that it will never end, but within your own soul, you have to deal with that. >> reporter: one other exchange, he touched on the memories of maggie and paul murdaugh, saying that he believes they visit alex murdaugh every night, murdaugh muttering, all day, and every night. kate, aaron? >> jay, thank you. danny, let me ask you about the defense that is planning to appeal. we know they are going to appeal. as a former defense attorney, or a defense attorney -- >> how dare you?
12:04 pm
>> current defense attorney. what would be your strategy if you're appealing? >> the average one is appealing the introduction of the financial crimes evidence as what is called prior bad acts which you can introduce to generally show that a defendant is a bad guy and therefore he committed the crime. the prosecution on the other hand argued that number one, the defense opened the door by bringing in some kind of character evidence, and number, two the financial crimes were all part of the same overall trans action. they were making -- he killed his wife and son to engender sympathy. the strange thing this is probably what helped the defense so much because it is unbelievable. yet it is an appealable issue. judge led discretion to bring in evidence and it would be an abhus of discretion and no reasonable judge would have let that in. really tough to meet that. >> jay gray, danny cevallos, thanks you. 31 million people in the southeast through the ohio valley are at risk for hurricane

of. i want to show you what these powerful winds did in just a few seconds, to a marina, not too far away from where i'm standing, shredding it in just a few seconds, tearing apart its roof and covering nearby boats with debris there. that is what tore through this area last night. we do know that throughout the day, as this storm makes its way eastward, flooding also going to be a significant concern, with drenching rains, that fall as a result of this massive system that fortunately is cleaned up here, cleared up here, but not elsewhere. >> we want to get bill karins now to take us through a little bit more of that. morgan, thank you. bill, what is the storm track? >> a new tornado warning in areas of north georgia. 65 reports of severe weather. all of the blue dots here are wind damage reports. about a quarter million people without power in northern al zaem and mississippi and tennessee. new tornado watches at 8:00,

including the atlanta area, upstate north carolina, and western portions of north carolina. this will be expiring soon, with the storms heading through lexington and london, kentucky. and now the snow portion of the snow is breaking out. it is snowing hard in south bend, all of southern michigan is going to be treacherous, the temperatures are going to drop, the roads will get covered and maybe not go below freezing but the intensity of the snow is so high that will overwhelm the warm boundary layer and we will get that snow accumulating for that evening rush hour. that's why we have the winter storm warnings from detroit to kalamazoo, chicago, this was a miss for you, you're not going to get hardly anything at all. and then tonight, we're going to get heavy snow in areas of northern and portions of new york and the adirondacks and the mountainous area, significant snow but for areas like new york city, it looks like probably about just rain, maybe a few snowflakes, that's it. >> bill karins, with us, morgan chesky, in texas for us as well, thank you both. we're learning new details this hour about the evidence prosecutors may use against the suspect in the murders of four idaho college students. new court documents reveal the weapons federal investigators

seized from bryan kohberger's family home in pennsylvania. nbc news correspondent steve patterson is following the story from our l.a. bureau and has followed it for months now. steve, what did investigators find at that pennsylvania home? >> reporter: a lot, kate. and i think it's important when asked why this matters, to frame this as investigators pushing this from probable cause for arrest to beyond a reasonable doubt for jurors. so this is important. what was found as you mentioned, weapons. at least three knives, 40 caliber pistol. pistol mags, hard drives, swabs, dark clothing, the list goes on to include some 30 items, not only from that family home, but also the car of bryan kohberger. you will remember that male dna was left on a knife sheath linking bryan kohberger to the crime scene in the house, and there is no indication, no indication that even those knives were the ones involved in the murders, police of course looking to connect the dots. and earlier this week, there was another warrant unsealed revealing the recovery of a

12:10 pm
it came after gop, ag's in at least 20 states wrote a letter to them threatening that they would take legal action if they dispensed medication abortion in their state. now, walgreen's did tell nbc news in a comment that this is a very complex and in flux legal area, and they're taking a lot into consideration. as they try for certification after the fda updated its guidance on dispensing medication abortion. so what it really does is emphasizes how the abortion landscape or access truly varies from state to state and including in states where abortion is legal. >> you laid it out very clearly here, obviously the second largest pharmacy chain, walgreen's, 9,000 stores or something like that, affecting 20 states, does it look like other major pharmacy chains are going to follow suit, given the rationale you just laid out? >> we very well could see several other large pharmacy chains take the same steps as walgreen's did late last night,
12:11 pm
and that's because this group of attorney generals sent very similar letters to places like rite aid, cvs, walmart, costco, the list goes on it, is a long list, and nbc did reach out to all of those folks last night, for comment, and we have yet to hear from them. i do want to emphasize, that the status quo does remain, but what it does do, it cuts off an avenue that people could have taken to access medication abortion based on the fda's updated guidance. >> appreciate the reporting, thanks. amazon is putting some major business plans on hold. and work phones are making a comeback. >> morgan brennan joins us now with the cnbc money minute. hi, morgan. >> well, amazon is pausing parts of construction of the second headquarters in virginia. and that move comes as amazon's ceo is taking steps to curtail expenses across the company in the face of slowing revenue and a gloomy economic outlook. first phase of the campus though, still slated to open in june. financial services company usaa is telling some staff that
