7:00 am
good morning. it is sunday, march 5th, 7:00, as we take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. looks like the sun is starting to peak through. although it was raining just a little bit ago. thank you for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. it was raining, windy, like around the 1:00 a.m. hour. the wind really picked up. >> no kidding. we've had a very active night around the bay area, so if
7:01 am
you're up early this morning, your alarm clock was the weather. it's still a slippery commute if you are headed over the san mateo bridge, and there are rough waters as we see the back end of the storm system bring along all of these issues for us. we're picking up some ground-to-cloud lightning strikes. let's see where the rain is. i've been see thing line of showers just linger around the south bay and into the peninsula. so let's take it a little closer and see where that rain is, just moving in over here into sunnyvale and down into gilroy, morgan hill, seeing some of that rain and the snow on top of mt. hamilton. let's not forget what's going on in the north bay with that winter storm warning. we'll be covering it all this morning. but for now, back to you, kira.
7:02 am
>> thank you. we begin with storm-related power outages taking their toll on people in the santa cruz mountains, and the concern about safety as this new storm rolls through. last night as pg&e was reenergizing power lines, one sparked, causing a small pyre. but because some people in that neighborhood didn't have power and had spotty cell service, they say they couldn't call the fire department. we found one family with two small children that's been living without power for more than a week. >> now we're going on nine days without power, and at nighttime we have to wrap up the baby. we're having to go to town to get gasoline every day to set up the generators, and it's a lot to deal with. >> some neighbors tell us they experienced another extended power outage back in january and have been without electricity for three weeks cumulatively
7:03 am
over the past two months. downed trees have made it difficult for crews to gain access to make repairs. in the sierra, the snow comes down by the foot, as video from uc berkeley's snow lab in soda springs, which has seen more than 531 inches of snow. nbc's climate unit says that's the most on record through the month of february. and up to five more feet of fresh powder could fall by tomorrow. for anyone hoping to get to tahoe, you might be out of ruck. i-80 is closed to the nevada state line. the chp shared this video from their cruiser showing whiteout conditions. right now, highway 50 is still open, but chains are required. and compare that to this wintry scene. this is not tahoe, though, this is napa county. snow was fallen at robert lewis
7:04 am
stevenson park just north of calistoga. this area is under a winter weather advisory. we want to make sure your download our free nbc bay area app. we'll send you alerts before the rain starts coming down. when it does hit your neighborhood, send us your pictures or video. just tag nbc bay area on your social posts and share them with us on twitter, facebook, and instagram. in other news now, police are still searching for a person involved in an armed robbery and a chase through three east bay cities yesterday. pleasant hill police got a call that two people went into this verizon store on contra costa boulevard and stole phones, telling employees they had a gun. officers chased the two to concord where the driver tried to hit an officer with his car. the officer opened fire but no one was hit.
7:05 am
the passenger in the car ran away, but the driver sped off. later, tracked down and arrested in nearby bay point. in the south bay, police continued to investigate a home where they say a man was making drugs and explosives. since wednesday, san jose police, the bomb squad and fbi have been searching the house on potomac court. the man faces more than half a dozen charges relateded to bombing two pg&e transformers in december and january and being charged with child endangerment because his three children lived inside that home. one neighbor tells nbc bay area he has been living in the house for about two years, and from day one, she and the other neighbors had a strange feeling about him. >> we seen the development of all the trash on the front lawn,
7:06 am
the weird signs, the unusual containers, what is happening over there? that doesn't just look like anything that any normal people have on their lawn. >> police say they expect to be clearing the house for the next few days. the calls are growing stronger to reinstate the former oakland police chief. people who live in oakland gathered together yesterday to protest the firing of laron armstrong. the mayor of oakland dismissed him last month. he was accused of adequately overseeing an investigation. they are urging the mayor to bring him back. swz e need him right now. that man was at crime scenes, supporting victims, families, because he's family. he's family. we finally have a chief from
7:07 am
oakland that supported the community. >> we spoke the mayor sheng thao and she said she had no plans to rehire armstrong. arm strong has filed an aappeal. tourists and locals alike flocked to the embarcadero last night in san francisco to say goodbye to the bay bridge lights. those lights we have enjoyed the last decade will go dark tonight and not coming back on unless enough money is raised to fund a replacement installation. >> we understand that the lights will be turned off, so this is one of the last times to be able to see them in action. >> reporter: this san francisco couple brought their tripod and camera saturday night along the pier to admire the bay bridge lights one last time.
7:08 am
>> we frequently bring tourists and guests who are staying with us down to the ferry building and have dinner and to see the lights. >> reporter: they have also donated money to a fund-raising goal to bring 50,000 upgraded lights, double the current amount, to the bay bridge. >> those 50,000 l.e.d.s are custom engineered to do well over time. init colludes a ten-year maintenance contract, so we know they will shine beautifully for the next ten years, and we'll make a decision as to what should happen next. >> reporter: glen davis is the founder of illuminate, the san francisco based art nonprofit that first brought this public art installation to the bridge in 2013. he says so far just over $6 million has been raised, the majority coming from $1 million pledges made by local
7:09 am
philanthropists, and companies including whatsapp. on the eve of the ten-year anniversary since it first lit up, the l.e.d. bulbs are damaged by wear and tear. >> it's happening faster than we can keep up. >> you can understand why it might cost a lot to maintain them. >> reporter: the bridge will be dark starting at 8:00 p.m. sunday, and for san francisco's youngest residents like 3-year-old wes, they've never known a bay area without the lights. >> are you going to miss the lights when they're gone? yeah. >> reporter: people who aren't mu multimillionaires can still donate. so far over $50,000 have come in smaller donations in the last three days. you can find the link to that fund-raiser on nbcbayarea.com.
7:10 am
>> we do have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, we go live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with chuck todd with when i was his age, we had to be inside to watch live sports. but with xfinity, we get the fastest mobile service and can stream down the street or around the block! hey, can you be less sister, more car? all right, let's get this over with. switch to xfinity mobile and save big on the new samsung galaxy s23 series. i should get paid more for this. you get paid when you win. from xfinity. home of the 10g network.
7:11 am
hold on... you're a night manager and mom. and the bill payer, baker, and nightlight maker? that's a lot. so, adding “and student” might feel daunting. but what if a school could be there for all of you? career, family, finances and mental health. -happy birthday. -happy birthday buddy. well, it can. national university. supporting the whole you.
7:12 am
welcome back. please join me in welcoming nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd. thanks for joining us this morning. we have previously talked quite a bit about whether california governor gavin newsom would run for president, and this past weekend, a new poll says 70% of california voters do not want newsom to run for president in 2024. so i want your opinion, is that because people want biden to run for re-election or is it because if newsom were to run, he would have to leave his governorship for his second term. what are your thoughts? >> you know, kira, it's hard to
7:13 am
get inside the survey respondent's head, but there is a tradition of polling done on a governor who wants to run for president and the majority of the state always says no. so a majority of people in arkansas didn't want bill clinton to run. a majority of texans weren't there with george w. bush. and it's less about that in many ways whether it could be what you said, that they don't want to not focus on the job. among democrats in california, it could be that they think a primary challenge suspect healthy for the party. don't do that, it's just going to divide the party, but we don't know why they said no. but it fits a pattern where most people don't want their "favorite son or daughter" running for president. they want them to stay in the job they have. >> that's fascinating. i didn't know that about clinton and bush 43. speaking of the 2024 election this past week, we saw duelling
7:14 am
republican gatherings, the cpac conference outside d.c. key republicans did not attend that, choosing instead, some of them rather, to attend a private death for donors in palm beach. i had no idea that was going to happen. you could say it was the tale of trump and the cpac and ron desantis and the club for growth. what does this division say about the future of the republican party? >> i'll tell you what donald trump seems to view it as a -- it allows him to claim he's the outsider. you know, they weren't behind closed doors at cpac, they were at the club for growth. the audience at cpac are -- look, this was a trump event. i understand why republicans stayed away. this was basically like getting a speaking slot at a trump rally. his pollster was running the straw poll, his former communications director were running the event. so i understand why a lot of
7:15 am
people stayed away. nikki haley got heckled in the hallway. but the picture is not a great picture for the rest of the field. again, trump gets to look like the outsider. he's talking to the outsider crowd that does show up to cpac. all the other republicans are talking to donors, not voters. so it's exactly the contrast that trump wants to draw. and i would just -- my warning to the rest of the republicans who want to run for president, be careful of falling into the trap that trump might be laying. >> well, chuck, we thank you, as always, for your time this morning. we look forward to seeing you soon. we hope you join chuck this morning. he'll have exclusive interviews with ohio representative mike turner, connecticut representative jim heins, and new hampshire governor chris sununu. we hope you stick right here and
7:16 am
tune into "meet the press" at 8:00 a.m. after this news cast. coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gurston and look at one california county's big change when it comes to counting ballots. it's their solution to combat what they say is voter fraud. another freight train derailed yesterday in ohio. this in springfield, and people living nearby have been told to shelter in place. the clark county emergency management agency made the request out of an abundance of caution. authorities say 20 train cars derailed, no hazardous materials were involved in this crash. norfolk southern says no one was injured. crews began cleanup operations overnight. fire crews say a hazardous materials team is at the scene. authorities say the shelter in place has since been lifted. no word on the cause of the

derailment. before you fly with your pet, the tsa is giving tips on how to travel with your four-legged friends. there has been an increase of dogs and cats being put through x-ray machines. the safest way is to bring your pet to a check point in their carrier, and then carry your pet or use a leash to walk them through while putting the crate in the x-ray machine. >> you don't want to expose your pet to x-rays they don't need. nobody wants to be exposed to that. i can assure you that the tsa officers are quite shocked to see that on an x-ray machine. >> if your pet has trouble staying calm, you can request a private room to help ease the security process. a brand new tesla recall to tell you about. the company is recalling nearly
7:18 am
3500 of its 2023 model y vehicles. it is all to do with loose bolts, securing the second row seat frame. tesla says they may not have been properly tightened. the national highway traffic safety administration says a loose seat frame may reduce seat belt performance, increasing the risk of injuries during a crash. a couple at the center of a lawsuit claim thag were abandoned in the ocean left behind on a snorkeling tour in hawaii. they filed the suit last month, but it happened in september of 2021, on a tour. the captain said the boat would be anchored for an hour before moving on to another spot. the couple says they were trying to get back to the boat through choppy waters after an hour, when it left. eventually, they say they swam half a mile to shore. nbc news reached out to sail maui for comment but did not hear back.
7:19 am
dreary weather did not stop people from celebrating in fremont. this is a hindu festival celebrating the triumph of good over evil. and people throw colored powder on one another to celebrate. >> this is the most festive festival where everybody gets rid of their inhibitions and get into the festival. it's like going to hawaii and getting into the vacation mood. you can greet each other with color and make everybody equal. >> so joyful. the federation of hindu americans has hosted this festival for 40 years. it's focused on togetherness and love. i love that. let's check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. looks like they got a break in the rain, but this morning it's been coming down. >> what a beautiful festival. yes, you are right. as we went into the overnight hours and into this morning, the weather was your wakeup call. so let's get right to it.
7:20 am
we have a lot of color to talk about with our weather graphics here. we were talking about what is going on in the north bay with the winter storm, so let's run through the colors. you can see that purple extending not only in the south bay hills, east bay hills but into the north bay. this will be the winter weather advisory we're talking about. until this afternoon for the north coast, lake county. then the pink is that winter storm warning. you can see ukiah, over into lake port. that's through monday morning. not only here, but extending into the sierra over into south lake tahoe, yosemite, until tomorrow morning. road closures are possible, and over on into lake county, the local roads can be tricky to get into. let's take a look at storm ranger. you can see storm ranger on your phone, see where the rain is in your neighborhood. right now, we're seeing that snow and that wintry mix of on
7:21 am
into ukiah, and lingering over into the napa valley. we're seeing pockets of rain mixed in here, so it's not all snow and hail. also some rain down into 680. of course, over into antioch. moving in a little bit of the heavier cell over rio vista, but town here in the south bay, seeing some rain over san jose, and that wintry mix just south of livermore, extending down into the mt. hamilton range and rain over into gilroy. pockets of rain into the next half hour to hour in the north bay over the santa cruz mountains. it will be like this throughout the day. you have a chance to go outside, just take your umbrella because you might get wet. a heavier cell develop around 10:30 over the bay bridge, and then that is how it will continue on into the amp,
7:22 am
bringing in the potential of isolated thunder and hail, not to be mistaken for the snow. how much rain? very trace amounts with today's system, but let me add on what's happening monday and tuesday and we pick up anywhere from a tenth of an inch to a little heavier as we move on into ukiah and santa rosa. monday morning, 4:30, the north bay seeing some rain that might impact your commute if you're making it to bay bridge from highway 4. so very active pattern as we go into the next seven days here. in san francisco, if you live or work there, remember to pack your umbrella and extra layers to keep warm. as i take it inland, chilly nights will be mixed in with this rain, snow, and hail the second half of the week. and next weekend, tapping into a little more moisture. we'll let you know all about it this week and next weekend when we see you once again. >> not even a break in that
7:23 am
seven-day forecast. >> no. >> i admittedly have an issue with buying too many coats, so this is giving me an opportunity to wear all of them. just shy of 7:23. much more ahead on "today in the day." coming up, the quakes win their home opener against vancouver. we'll show you who scored the game winner for san jose. stick around and find out. spor is next.ts

the dark and the cold since the last round of storms more than a week ago. today in the bay's marianne favro reports from the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: huge trees came crashing down, taking out powerlines and for some here on thompson road, this is day nine without power. a scare for dozens of people living in the santa cruz mountains, as pg&e was reenergizing power lines, one sparked causing a small fire. >> we had this fire, we couldn't call the fire services. >> reporter: he couldn't call 911, because he has no power, his phone service is out, and cell service is spotty. he and his family live on thompson road, and are on day eight without power. >> we had to throw away everything in the fridge, hundreds of dollars of products that went to trash. >> reporter: gabriella has two small children and has been without power even longer. >> we're going on nine days without power, and at nighttime, we have to wrap up the baby.

7:45 am
continues as we go into the morning and afternoon hours. the time stamp is up there. 1:00, we're still seeing that rain and wintry mix over parts of ukiah, west of santa rosa. and then i'm seeing a little bit of a heavier cell developing around 7:00 p.m., just off the coast. so that could be the possibility of some thunder and lightning strikes once again. this continues on into our monday morning commute. so please plan around that. maybe you can stay home tomorrow and on tuesday. make the weather your excuse to maybe get another day at home. as i take it into our highs for today, going to feel very cold. so just remember, rain, heavy jackets. you need to have it all for today. here is your long-range outlook. we could be seeing more rain into next weekend. >> all right.

>> oh, my. >> my assumption, they got rid of dominion because this is a heavy trump-favored county. >> oh, yes. shasta county is an extremely northern california. we think we're northern california? no, extreme could be the word to use for shasta county, because if you look at the county, where it is and what they do, they voted just about opposite to the way we vote in california, around 30% for biden and 60% for trump, the rest of the tape just the opposite. this is an extraordinary situation and it leads to folks going in a whole different direction, because they just don't believe what the rest of us do. >> right. and i don't mean to be a naysayer, but counting by hand sounds like an extraordinary task. how practical is that idea? >> let me answer it this way,
7:51 am
shasta -- i mean, kira. shasta county last time in 2020 had 29 different races, not just the presidency, but 94,000 voters. so just put that in your minds. we're going to count the votes of 94,000 voters in 29 different races. that will take more than a day or two. think about the 18 million voters in california who had similar numbers of election races, from the presidency down to school boards. 25, 30, 40 perhaps. think about how long it will take to count those. that's what they're thinking about in terms of shasta county. imagine what would happen nationally. >> how likely is this proposal? how prominent is it? >> this idea is promoted by mike lindell, the pillow guy. he's been running around the country saying we've got voter fraud in 2020. shasta county is not the only one, seven other counties across
7:52 am
the country had results they rejected because of what they called voter fraud. so it's not very likely. but what does it mean? it shows you that a great deal of the country still doesn't believe that the election in 2020 was for real. to the extent this goes on, you see the results you see in shasta county and elsewhere. >> larry gerston, thanks for joining us this morning. it's 7:52. up next, a quick look at the top stories, including the wet weather causing lots of headaches for people across the y area. ba ba
