to palo alto with light showers. if you're about to go out the door, be ready for the rain and the need for windshield wipers. in the north bay it's been adding up for hours at this point, but as we move toward the east bay there hasn't been much rain yet. it's going to continue to move in. as we get a look at palo alto, temperatures only 39 degrees and we'll see the rain off and on through about 11:00, and then we'll see a little bit more sunshine for the afternoon. so as we're timing out the rain, for the north bay it's getting ready to ease up for you at about 8:00 to 9:00, and then it's moving into san francisco and the peninsula for a couple of hours, as well as oakland into contra costa county, and then at 9:30 it's approaching the tri-valley, moving through palo alto, and we're going to see it moving into san jose. and then as we go up in elevation, some rain changing over to snow. mount hamilton getting another coating of snow.

going into the rest of today, it looks like between 2:00 and 3:00 much of us are seeing sunshine, but in the north bay that rain is coming back, so at any point today we could see the spotty showers passing by, and also the chance of thunderstorms. now, much of tomorrow looks dry, all the way up into the evening. between now and tomorrow we're looking at maybe another quarter inch of rain, as high as a half an inch of rain in spots like oakland. and then for if sierra we still have another good coating of snow between now and wednesday, so those travel windows are so small, it's really difficult to get there. snow is piled up so high. i don't think over the next few days or this week it's going to be a good time to go because the snow pretty much continues there. waves of rain for the bay area and then on thursday we're going to be preparing for a bigger storm system set to move in with warmer temperatures, and that may raise snow levels. that means that we could see for a lot of the sierra rain on top

hard to believe that spring break is right around the corner. if you're planning a hotel stay, prepare for those resort fees. >> yeah, chris chmura wants to help you avoid them, even if you've already booked. here is how. >> first, a rant, please. resort fees are totally completely undeniably out of control. okay, now that we've established how inhospitable i feel resort fees are, let's look at five ways you can try to beat them. the first trick is to check your rate. if you already have a reservation, you're not necessarily locked into a rate with a resort fee. many total reservations can be revised right up until the week you arrive. second, comparison shop for package deals. third, see if your company has a negotiated hotel rate. many employers, especially the big ones, broker deals with the hotel chains. part of that negotiation is nixing resort fees and sometimes you can use your corporate late
6:26 am
for leisure travel. fourth, see if your loyalty pays. at least one chain waves fees for top members. hyatt. getting the status requires staying 60 nights a year. that's not for everyone. tip number five is seef using points instead of cash to pay for your stay makes sense. i've done this several times. an example, i researched a hotel in honolulu. a five-night stay in a king room in july. the room rate, resort fee and taxes total $3,324. but if you book this same exact stay using points and you buy all those points, it will cost you $2,800. total savings, $524. and there's no resort fee. coming up next, the top stories we're following for you today, including the return of snow in parts of the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking your best chance to spot it.

highs of over 20%. >> how soon can we expect that to change and what is any improvement going to look like realistically? >> so typically the spring is a performing month for san jose, san francisco metro, san francisco city. so i think the key to look for will be what's occurring in the spring. we've already seen over the last few weeks an uptick in markets like san francisco city, san francisco metro, and san jose. so how much recovery will happen in the spring for the home prices in those areas will give us some evidence in regards to where those are going. one thing i will note about san francisco city in particular as of this morning is it is negative from the beginning of the pandemic. and san francisco city is down about 2.5% since the beginning of the pandemic. >> so perhaps an opportunity if you're ready. getting all the housing news in the bay area is pretty simple.
