mike is keeping an eye on the roads. first, let's talk about the forecast. >> it's still wet as you're driving around the bay area. we had some overnight showers moving through and most of the rain has cleared, but there still may be a couple of spotty showers lingering as we get a look at stormranger. we can see the activity that's been moving through and we're also going to continue to see those rain chances off and on today, a look at the wider view, we can see that the storm systems are still spinning off the coast, that area of low pressure and the swirl of clouds we can see toward the north, and that's going to keep it unsettled for today. so that just means we may see a slight chance of rain, but overall it will be a little dryer compared to yesterday. and we'll see another round of rain as we head into tomorrow, especially early in the morning, about 6:00 we could see another wave of rain passing by. and our temperatures are staying chilly, so there could be some snow on those upper elevations, on hills around the bay area.

the golden gate bridge, where we are seeing a dry morning as far as rain actively falling. looking ahead, we have another strong storm that's going to be coming in between thursday and friday, and it's also going to heighten our flood concerns as we can see more landslides, mudslides, as well as river flooding. that potential will be going up over the weekend. we're also monitoring for the possibility of 20 to 50-mile-per-hour winds, as well as some power outages, and we could also see sierra snow melt happening about 4,000 feet and below. above, there could be additional snowfall above 6,000 feet. that's what we're monitoring for going ahead. as of right now, we've seen a couple of spotty showers moving through. as the storm system starts to wind down and gives us a brief break today. we are seeing some fairly dryer conditions and we'll see temperatures in the mid-40s to start, and then a mostly sunny
4:49 am
start to the day. then seeing afternoon clouds move in. as far as temperatures, we'll reach 55 degrees in hayward, 53 in napa. it's going to be not much warmer tomorrow, it's going to take a while before we get warmer temperatures. and the spotty rain will be coming back heading into tomorrow, going into the morning, sweeping across the bay area. most likely before sunrise. then we should see some clearing once again for tomorrow afternoon. looking at how much additional snow we'll see between now and wednesday, about 5 to 10, maybe 15 inches of snow. but once again, there's much more snow ahead going into the weekend, and that's when the atmospheric river with some deeper moisture is expected to come in, this bigger storm we're looking at between thursday and friday. even some lingering showers into the weekend, as we're looking at the possibility of a lot of rainfall over the next week or so, possibly another 5 to 7 inches of rainfall.
4:50 am
so that's the reason why we do have the flooding concerns going ahead, especially with these bigger storms and more behind that going into next week. once again for san francisco, we will see spotty rain until the bigger storm comes in on thursday. >> now as we turn to our climate in crisis, we haven't gotten many breaks from the storms this season and we're seeing the most sierra snow we've seen in years. with all of this rain, now water officials are releasing water to make way for more incoming storms, so do we still need to conserve water? that's been the question coming up time and time again. so we talked to a valley water board member to find out if we still need to take shorter showers and come back our water use by the current standard of 15%. >> we are holding as much water as we can through the end of the rain season for storage that can be used throughout the rest of the year. this is an unusual year for rain, as you know, we've been in
4:51 am
a five-year doubt. we anticipate more storms coming in. march is anticipated to be a very wet month. so i will be guessing april, may, june, we'll re-evaluate all our situations in regards to conservation levels. the last major flood we had was in 2017 and prior to that we were in a five-year drought. from 2017 to 2022 we were in another five-year drought. it's cyclical. what we continue to ask our constituents, our retailers, all of us, is to consider continuing the conservation levels. now, if we make the determination that 15% is no longer necessary, then we will make those determinations when we feel comfortable to do so. >> so now the rule is to continue to conserve for future drought and to stay in the habit of saving water as our situation has and can change quickly. and for more stories on our climate in crisis, go to nbcbayarea.com.
