doing everything they can to reach residents stranded behind snow drifts up to nine feet high. we're going to have the latest and also your forecast details. but let's get started with that shocking footage. a passenger on a united flight trying to open an emergency door mid flight and attacking a flight attendant when he was confronted. it is just the latest in a series of incidents shining a spotlight on airline safety. nbc's emilie ikeda is here with new details. good morning. >> good morning, the alarming incident played out just minutes before the plane was set to land in boston. federal prosecutors say that passenger repeatedly tried to stab a flight attendant, but thankfully some fast-acting passengers and crew members jumped in to stop him. >> reporter: this morning, a united airline passenger is facing federal charges following a terrifying incident aboard a boston-bound flight. >> i will kill every man on this plane. >> reporter: according to court

documents, about 45 minutes before landing, the cross-country trip from los angeles, the flight crew was notified that an an emergency exit on the door of the plane had been disarmed. a flight attendant had discovered that the handle had been moved out of the fully locked position. and the man had been near the door leaving crew to believe he had tampered with it. when confronted he allegedly responded asking if there were cameras to prove it. witnesses say that's when he got out of his seat and approached two flight attendants in the aisle and allegedly tried to stab one of them in the neck three times with a broken metal spoon. >> his voice was getting louder and louder and clearly agitated. >> reporter: passengers on board the plane seen by this video tackled and restrained the suspect. >> there were probably four or five men that restrained him on the ground. >> reporter: torres later admitting to investigators he knew if he opened thdee door, ma people would die. and also claiming self-defense

during the altercation, saying he made the weapon on board in the bathroom. >> just how unusual is this degree of violence? >> it's extraordinarily unusual. but it doesn't take that much to take a lot of every day items and turn them into weans. >> reporter: it comes as we're learning new details about torres. in 2015, he was ordered by a court to undergo a psychiatric evaluation according to a lawsuit filed against a hospital years later in which he alleged he was misdiagnosed with a mental health disorder. in that suit torres who represented himself sought $50 billion and a license to carry and use if necessary any type, concealed or unconcealed, firearms and explosives, on any commercial transport. the case was later dismissed. united airlines says it has zero tolerance for any type of violence on our flights. adding, this customer will be banned from flying on united pending an investigation. >> this was a very-long flight. he behaved this way that we saw on camera 45 minutes before landing. any indication of what was happening before that? >> so even before this five and a half hour flight took off,

torres appeared to show some kind of interest in the emergency exit door. investigators say he actually asked one of his fellow passengers about where the door handle was located on the safety card during the initial safety briefing. he is due in court later this week. if convicted he could face up to life in prison. >> thank you so much. we will have a lot more on the state of our aviation safety in our next half hour. we'll have captain sully sullenberger. he will join us live. in the meantime, a search is intensifying this morning for four americans kidnapped in a mexican border city. the fbi now offering a reward for any information leading to their return. nbc's morgan chesky is in brownsville, texas, near the southern border. morgan, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. officials say this may be a horrific case of mistaken identity. officials say this group of four was going from here in brownsville, across the bridge, into matamoros so one of them could get a cosmetic procedure.

instead they drove right into the middle of a gun fight that ended in a terrifying kidnapping, at least part of which was caught on camera. four americans kidnapped in a mexican border city, and this morning, a law enforcement official tells nbc news this video captures parts of the horrifying attack. in it you see a gunman dragging people to a white pick-up truck in matamoros, mexico, after authorities say the van carrying four u.s. citizens was caught in the crossfire of a deadly shootout. family identified one of those victims as latavia washington mcgee, sharing the group rented a van to drive from south carolina to brownsville, texas. the plan, cross over for a cosmetic surgery. the associated press was told that her younger brother, zindell brown, is also one of the victims. now the whereabouts of all four unknown. the u.s. state department placing both the city of matamoros and the mexican state of tamaulipas under a level four

travel warning since october citing drime and kidnapping as reasons to avoid travel entirely. >> it has devolved where there is increasing drug-related violence, criminal organizations, seeking to kidnap for ransom. >> reporter: following two shootings that closed schools, the state department issued a a warning reminder just hours before the kidnapping took place. >> this isn't an isolated situation. >> reporter: congressman vincente gonzalez whose district includes brownsville, calls this part of a larger trend towards cartel violence. >> what are you telling your constituents in light of this recent kidnapping? >> i would tell them to be very careful in traveling across the border. >> reporter: in washington, the white house stressing they are following the situation closely. >> our thought are with the families of these individuals, and we stand ready to give all possible assistance. >> reporter: an official tells nbc authorities are concerned about the group's well-being because videos appear to show some of them severely wounded. >> it is a race to identify them so we can establish contact and

maybe have negotiations here. >> what are investigators looking for as they're searching for this group? what kind of clues? >> reporter: savannah, we do know the fbi and minnesota vikings can authorities said they are working hand in hand to find the culprits and bring the four americans back home safely. we saw a large response to the scene of the crime across this brinl following the scene on friday. gathering evidence. processing the vehicles. obtaining surveillance footage to try to the individuals down but the mexican president said on monday he believes the issue will be resolved. savannah? >> key moments. morgan, thank you very much. let's turn now to the warnings aimed at the white house from top leaders in china, including its president, and they are ratcheting up the tensions between the two nations amid growing concern about china's potential involvement in the war in ukraine. nbc's molly hunter has that story with us.

molly, these are rare, these are direct messages. how seriously are they being received? >> reporter: yes, hoda, that's exactly right. these are rare, and for today, in the second day in a row we heard similar comments so beijing's new foreign minister doubling down, warning the u.s. and china are hurling towards what he calls direct confrontation and conflict. fiery comments from the foreign minister underlined a deepening tension between the two world's biggest economies. this after sharp comments from china's leader xi jinping yesterday blaming washington for these deteriorating relationships. now, speaking on legislative session, it was recorted by china's state tv, xi accused washington of trying to fence china in. take a look at what exactly he said. he said, western countries led by the united states have implemented all-round containment, encirclement and suppression of china, which has brought unprecedented severe challenges to our country's development. hoda, as you mentioned, these are strong rare words from china's leader.

of course, all of this comes as beijing strongly denies the u.s. allegations that it is considering giving moscow lethal aid to use in the war in ukraine. >> and you brought that up right there, the war in ukraine. this is all happening against that backdrop. give us the latest on the fighting there. >> that's exactly right. that is the backdrop that we cannot ignore. and from the foreign minister, china's foreign minister, again, he did say that the china-russia relationship does not pose a threat, as far as what is happening on the ground in ukraine. according to ukrainian armed forces, the russian military has launched more than 50 air strikes and at least 5 missile strikes just today. the focus for the ukrainian remains on that eastern city of bakhmut. the uk ministry of defense says they have stabilized their defensive line. the other headline that we are monitoring, that we are watching for, is any indication that xi will visit moscow to meet with president putin. no word yet on if or when that might happen. hoda? >> all right. molly hunter for us, thanks. last night, fox news host

tucker carlson aired newly released video from the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. the footage was provided exclusively to carlson by republican house speaker kevin mccarthy. carlson attempting to downplay the violence by showing video of people calmly walking around the capitol. tucker was trying to persuade his viewers that while there were some bad apples, most of those there were peaceful. he called them sight-seers. other video that carlson did not air showed hours of violent combat. more than 100 officers were injured during the attack. in response, congressman thompson, the former chairman of the january 6th committee released a statement saying, speaker mccarthy quote died it was more important to give into a fox host's lies and propaganda than to protect the capitol and the police members and staff that serve in it. also this morning, with new storm threats developing, there is added urgency to reach more california residents who are trapped in their homes after record snowfall. emergency teams now they're going door to door to rescue

people who are stranded. we will get to dylan's forecast in just a minute. but first, nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us from california. good morning, miguel. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. this is what so many homes and neighborhoods look like in the mountains just outside of los angeles. there's actually several cars buried behind me. in this front lawn you can see mound after mound of snow. another concern in this community, snow on roof tops. the man that lives in this home says he finally has food and water and digging out will take days. this morning, this is the race to reach the snow-bound in southern california. emergency teams digging out trapped residents in the san bernardino mountains, just 80 miles east of l.a. homes and cars submerged in snow drifts more than nine feet tall. >> it feels like an apocalyptic movie. >> reporter: in the last two weeks alone, over 7 million

cubic yards of snow cleared from state highways. the equivalent of more than 2,000 olympic-sized swimming pools, but many side roads here are still undrivable. >> without us volunteers, there's no telling how many dead bodies we'd be recovering. >> reporter: middle school teacher steve gaskill, serving as a literal lifeline, scaling the snow to deliver food and medications to stranded residents, like marissa cupsink. including insulin for her uncle. >> it's just scary not being able to get out. >> how desperate did you need these supplies, including that insulin? >> oh, it's matter of life or death for my uncle. >> reporter: pregnant mom stephanie gillis and her husband david were trapped in their home when she went into labor. road closures preventing their midwives from arriving in time. >> that's when things started to get a little stressful for me. >> reporter: luckily, stephanie gave birth to a healthy baby girl audrey without

complications. meantime, northern california also facing dangerous conditions. heavy snow in the sierra nevada, collapsing roofs and making travel treacherous. yosemite national park and over a dozen state parks closed indefinitely as californians come together to help brave this historic winter wallop. there is some good news in this area. most of the major roads have been plowed but many side roads and driveways have not. this corvette is encased in snow and ice. the other major concern is plunging temperatures. if the temperatures drop lower and folks don't get power back this could be a life and death matter. back to you. >> miguel almaguer for us there, reporting from california, thanks. >> without heat, without medicines that are needed. let's check in with dylan to get the forecast this morning. hi. good morning, guys.

the next round of snow at least will impact central and northern california. so a little north of where miguel is right now. you can see we have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings in effect. more moisture moving onshore. mostly snow for the higher elevations at this point. and it will continue to accumulate. as we wait for the next storm system to make its way onshore. so through thursday, for this first storm, we could see about one to two feet of snow up across mount shasta and the sierra mountain range. a little higher in elevations, could end up with one to three feet of snow. we call it an atmospheric river. because basically, it is this on-shore flow of water, that kinds of follows this path along this cold front and it brings all of that rain and the mountain snow onshore. so with the next storm system expected to come in friday and into saturday, that is going to only enhance the amount of rain and snow that we're seeing in that area. we could end up though with about two to six inches of rainfall, so when you factor in the fact that the snow is going to melt in the higher elevations and then combined with that heavy rain, that could lead to a major flooding concern, also the

runoff and also just the fact that avalanches and mudslides are possible, too. so this is going to be a big storm system that is going to impact california as we get later into the week, with again, two to six inches of rain and also the possibility of feet of snow. that's a look at the weather across the country. we'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds. . rs entering a burning house... will one day save time when lives are on the line. visualizing a patient's most recent scan... will help speed up decision making in the er. and while the woolly mammoth is still extinct... that doesn't mean students can't take field trips to visit them. the metaverse may be virtual, but the impact will be real. good tuesday morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we've seen a little bit of rain here and there, especially for san francisco, moving over toward oakland. not all of us are starting out the day with rain. i think for the most part it's going to be fairly dry.

we've now had six runway close calls. we'll get to the most recent in just a minute. we've had that midair turbulence you discussed with injuries, one person killed. we also had that engine explosion because of a bird strike now the faa is holding an emergency landing in cuba, and now the faa is holding this emergency summit next week to drill down on aviation safety nationwide after months of high profile close calls, the bird strike and engine fire on that southwest flight over cuba, it has put a lot of people on edge. >> people were screaming, not knowing what to do and trying to breathe. and it is filling up with more smoke. >> reporter: thankfully the plane landed safely back in havana. >> if you lose an engine, if you lose a computer system, you've got multiple fail-safes right? >> absolutely. i mean we've got typically two to three different systems to back each other up >> for each system >> for each system. >> reporter: mark weiss is a former american airlines captain. >> the airplanes are certified

to fly on one engine. >> on one engine? >> on one engine so that's not the issue. >> reporter: the emergency landing in cuba followed two cases of severe in-flight turbulence seven injured last thursday. a lufthansa flight forced to defer to washington, d.c while on friday, 55-year-old dana hyde killed in a private jet that hit severe turbulence, too. multiple close calls on the nation's runways this year including burbank, california. >> is he off the runway yet? >> we're going around. >> reporter: austin, texas new york's jfk >> delta 1943 cancel takeoff clearance. >> reporter: and honolulu, a united jumbo jet that went into a steep nosedive off hawaii in december, coming within 800 feet of slamming into the ocean now, the faa chief himself a veteran pilot is convening a nationwide safety summit next week pilots, controllers, airlines, unions, and regulators >> i want to hear from the participants about what they are

seeing in their own operations and more important, i want specific ideas about how to enhance our already robust safety net with concrete actions. >> reporter: the pressing question, are these a string of coincidences, or is there an ongoing safety issue that needs to be addressed now? ntsb chief jennifer homendy. >> we really need to focus on what is going on in the aviation system let's take a pause let's do a safety stand-down and let's figure out what are we missing here. >> reporter: we mentioned the sixth runway incursion or close call this one in sarasota happened back in february just learning about it two commercial flights one of them cleared to take off. another one cleared to land on that same runway the ntsb believes this could have been an atc, air traffic control error. savannah >> tom, thank you. that sets us up for more perspective on state of airlines safety, we turn to a man who knows a lot about it, retired u.s. airways pilot captain sully sullenberger pulled off the

miracle on the hudson in 2009, successfully landing in the freezing hudson river after losing both engines to a bird strike and anyone on board survived and he works now as an aviation safety expert with years of experience captain sullenberger, we just laid out all of those incidents. they're not related but do you see a thread do you see a thread that concerns you >> they are the canaries in the coal mine. and they should concern us they're indications that as good as a job as we've done in this complex system, there's always improvements that can be made. and we still have work to do two things that stand out to me right now that are long-term issues that we need to work on is the faa and our other critically important infrastructure needs to be able to get from congress predictable long-term, multi-year funding, so that we're not doing

band-aids, where we take a long-term approach and we need to have faa administrators who are confirmed and not a series of acting administrators those two things alone in the long term would do a lot to stabilize the system. >> do you see a connection to the pandemic and the fact that there were people, pilots were flying less, just by definition? >> yes, i do we've lost a lot of our flying and the recovery from covid has been more rapid than many expected, so we've been caught short. and in many important ways and it's staffing. the staffing issue would, again, benefitting from increased multi-year funding so we can anticipate, we can recruit, hire and train air traffic controllers, maintenance technicians, and others and get them in place before we need them. and not be playing catch up. >> as mentioned each of thes incidents are different, they

have their own set of facts, but six runway close calls just this year what do you make of that >> again, it's a reminder of, in spite of how safe the system is, what is really at stake, and how critically important it is that we have in place the human technology system in which each can do their part to back each other up, to be resilient, reliable, and redundant to track these mistakes and correct them before they can lead to harm >> we have not had a fatal commercial airline crash in this country since 2009 thank god for that do you think there is a sense of complacency that sets in when air travel has been thankfully so safe? >> yes, we've become the victims of our own success we must keep reminding ourselves on literally a daily basis that even though air travel has become ultra safe and routine, what we're really doing is pushing a tube filled with people through the upper

united flight tried to open a door midair yesterday and then attacked a flight attendant. nbc's emilie ikeda has the latest including that new dramatic video. >> you can imagine the terro for these passengers on this very crowded flight. just minutes before landing, after this cross-country trip landed in boston according to the court documents, the flight crew received an alarm, they were notified that the emergency exit door had been quote-unquote disarmed a flight attendant saw 33-year-old francisco torres apparently near the door, and he believed that it had been tampered with. shortly after confronting torres about it, we're told that witnesses say he got out of the seat and approached two flight attendants and that's when he allegedly tried to stab a flight attendant repeatedly using a broken metal spoon, aiming for the neck area. this mid-air scare as you can see here, all captured on camera apparently passengers and crew members rushing to tackle and restrain him through the remainder of the flight. torres later telling investigators he believed that

the flight attendant was trying to kill him, and he was simply acting in self-defense he is now facing federal charges. interference with a flight cre with a dangerous weapon. that means if convicted, he could face up to life in prison. i should note we reached out t his attorneys and have not heard back. >> thank you. we move now to an alarming trend that has so many parents concerned, teacher turnover. school districts continue to see spikes in the number of teachers leaving their profession nbc's stephanie gosk is looking at what that means for students across the country hey, stephanie, good morning. >> good morning. it is hoped last fall that the teacher shortage would start to improve after a tough stretch during the pandemic. but new numbers this morning tell a different story it is not better and in some places, the shortages are getting worse. >> reporter: across the country fed-up teachers many tired of long hours and low pay are calling it quits in one virginia county, they are hoping a $3,000 bonus will kee teachers from leaving the job.

twice. 20 seasons 16 years do you remember like day one do you remember what it was like when you started on this journey? >> i do, i remember who i was with i thought it was going to blow up in flames, and it was exciting, you know, i only took the job because i thought it would help my cookbook a little bit and i never thought it would turn into this pop culture phenomenon, and it is such a thing now. >> i mean, nothing lasts this long, nothing lasts for that many years or this many seasons. what do you think it is about it and how have the contestants changed do you think over the years? >> i think it is really compelling to see someone be great at their job or try to be the best at their job and you don't have to be a food professional to know good food. we all have strong opinions about it and i think the real stars of the shows are the competitors and the cities that we go to every season. >> i think that is part of it. it is global now

now we're introducing people to food from places they might not ever be able to visit. >> and something i wanted to do way back when and i think we've coming around to doing that more often. and this season, we are international for the first time "top chef" is in 174 territories. but it is also franchised in 29 countries, so they have their own "top chef," like france and thailand, and brazil so we're taking chefs from 11 of those countries who have all, already competed, and the american ones and you have to have one "top chef" already or been a finalist in order to compete. >> cool. >> so the competition is already starting at a very high level. >> let's cook. >> we are making chicken tikka marsala. >> like the chow mein of indian food >> you know, it is the national dish of england. believe it or not. great britain colonized india. so what i'm mixing in here is garden marsala, a typical spice

blend. i will have you mix that up a little bit >> i will mix it up. >> and it has chili powder some salt. turmeric and lemon juice that is our marinade that is going to be in there with the chicken marinate the chicken at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. or more in the fridge. >> got it. >> and then you're going to toast some spices. toasting spices is as easy as doing it in a hot dry pan for 90 seconds. i have black cardamom, and it is part of the chinese cooking. cumin, cloves, coriander seed. and red chilies. whisk that up. a little spice blender or a coffee grinder >> you have taken that and put in the spices. >> yes. >> they go here but this is the marinated chicken with some of the marinade still on it and it is fine >> you want to do it i don't know how to do it.
