good morning. it is saturday, march 11th. we are taking a live look outside. surf check in pacifica on a gloomy morning. nice to have a break from the rain. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel is wearing our sunshine, the sunshine we all need and joins us with a look at your microclimate forecast. >> they seem to be having a little reflecting moment, watching the waves, a little break in the rain. that's exactly what we need this morning. we're getting a little bit of a

breakdown in the south bay although we have those overcast skies. temperatures comfortable, 40s and 50s across the board. 50 in san jose. we are still reeling in on all the effects that the atmospheric river has brought. look at all that moisture, still bringing in rain to the north bay, down into l.a. and, of course, we can't forget the sierra snow. let's check in with storm ranger. there is rain over the north bay. a little bit of heavy-ish downpours, santa rosa, rohnert park. i know the beach looks enticing, but there's a few things to let you know about that's coming up. many people in pajaro have been evacuated overnight after a

levee breach. many people did evacuate yesterday during this storm, but the orders turned into warnings as the rain tapered off. then the evacuation orders were reinstated around 1:00 this morning. there was one water rescue early this morning we're told about, and county leaders continue watching the pajaro river levels because of how many people live in close proximity to i. in santa cruz county where a road that completely washed away in yesterday's storm is now fixed, at least temporarily. this is soquel's north main street sent to us by charley hobson and lori manning. kris sanchez interviewed them yesterday morning after a six-foot culvert gave in to the powerful currents, taking a water main with it. huearndds main street were stranded inside their homes with no way to get past the creek. people in that neighborhood also received a water boil notice.

the goal was to have part of the road restored by this morning which crews worked non-stop overnight to accomplish. no word on when work on the permanent fix will begin. in the north bay a handful of sonoma county roads are still under wart. on the way to guerneville we found two roads were just not passable. this is a road just off river road. most drivers followed the advice and turned around. a few decided to risk it, including this delivery driver who ended up needing to be rescue. in san anselmo a tree came crashing down on the house. the family was home, fortunately they were in a different part of the home when it happened. they tell us the winds were howling at the time. the storm not only created chaos for people, but the storms appear to have claimed a lime. today in thebe's thom jensen continues our coverage from san

francisco. >> reporter: in san francisco's panhandle park, a massive yuke eucalyptus fell smashing four cars. >> we came to the deck out front and saw the tree down. >> marlinda shared the video she captured showing the huge tree blocking three lanes on oak street while heavy rain and wind continued to pound the city. near golden gate park workers cut up a giant cyprus that fell blocking jfk drive. more of the same on the peninsula. a 50-foot oak fell just feet from this menlo park home, destroying a fence. nearby we found workers were moving part of a tree that fell onto an apartment building. meanwhile, in redwood city, this huge tree tore through another back yard and onto a home, tearing down the power line. >> we were all scared. everybody in the house was

screaming. >> reporter: look what computers ran into on friday morning. i-580 looked like a river and was completely shut down. >> i've never seen anything like that. it's kind of scary, to say the least. >> reporter: caltrans said its pumps that are supposed to keep heavy rain from pooling on the freeway couldn't handle all the water this storm was packing. >> usually our pumping system is just fine. however, with an extreme weather event like this, our pumps were overwhelmed and it did flood. >> reporter: not just 580, roads like pinehurst in contra costa county also flooded. in oakland firefighters say rain may be to blame for a roof collapse at peet's coffee distribution center killing a longtime employee, 57-year-old martin gonzalez who was waiting for his crew to arrive when it happened. his widow said he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

five bodies have been identified, but investigators haven't been able to identify the sixth body. some family members told investigators their calls to the owner of the cream tory went unanswered. they believed their loved ones had been cremated or scattered at sea as requested, but they may not have happened at all. people that entrusted oceanview creigh makes with a loved one from 2020 to 2022 who are not sure where the remains are, should contact the alameda county corner. multiple swas stick tas were found inside a dorm room at stanford university. they were found with an image of adolf hitler on the white board of a door. school leaders are investigating whether it was targeted because a student inside that dorm room is jewish. in a statement stanford said it,

quote, wholeheartedly rejects anti-semitism, racism, hatred and associated symbols which are reprehensible and will not be tolerated. stunning news that rattled financial markets. silicone valley bank or svb is now closed. its deposits are now under the control of financial regulators in what is the largest u.s. bank failure since the great recession. the bank has major ties to the tech world and leaves account holders wondering what will happen to their money. "today in the bay" e plains. >> a long line outside the bank on friday. svb, the 16th largest in the s. with $175 billion in deposits is the biggest american bank to fail since 2008. the customers, primarily businesses and investors in the tech sector. >> the root cause was a sudden and significant increase in

interest rates. that part of the job of a bank is to manage interest rate and it didn't happen here. >> reporter: thursday svb started selling shares to offset the losses. the stock price plunged and customers moved to take their money out. the fdic which insures money in banks now stepping in telling customers it will begin making good on secured accounts when it opens on mondays. it ensures accounts up to $250,000. many accounts there are worth a lot more. >> a heart stopping moment of this bank is done. >> reporter: ashley is the ceo of health care startup farmboxrx. unable to access her money, she fierce she can be out more than $10 million. >> $250,000 isn't a ton of money to us when you're talking eight figures in the bank currently. >> reporter: concern over the collapse of svb drove wall street lower. the banking sector alone down

more than 4%. >> there are recent developments that concern a few banks that i'm monitoring very carefully. >> reporter: the immediate concern, the cash-burning startups who have millions in svb and may not be able to access the money to pay bills or make payroll. some remembering how svb gave them a boost in the beginning. >> svb was always supportive of that community. their business grew and the startups grew. but it does feel different that it's svb versus like chase or bank of america. i have no relationship with my bank of america rep. but i remember my svb person because that was a personal relationship. >> reporter: gia vang, taeb. governor newsom signed an executive order yesterday. underground reservoirs account for about 41% of california's

water supply. this new order loosens restrictions on using flood water to replenish reservoirs. newsom faced criticism for not taking this action during the january storm. the move is being welcomed by farmers and water providers, though environmental activists say the order could hurt the ecosystem. the man convicted of killing kristin smart learned how long he'll spend in prison. in october jurors in monterey county convicted paul flores of murdering smart back in 1996. she was a freshman at cal poly when she disappeared. flores was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. flores' father ruben, was acquitted in october of being an accessory after the fact. he was accused of helping his son paul hide kristin's body which has never been found. days before he's due to report in prison, a defeat for

convicted their nose executive sunny balwani. he's due to surrender thursday to serve 13 years for investor fraud. jurors convicted him on 12 counts for his role in their nose. we are seeing record lows in our king salmon population. fishery managers are calling for a complete ban on fishing them this season. that ban would include all of california and parts of oregon. the projected number of king salmon has dropped to its lowest level since 2008. until now that was the only time we saw a complete ban on fishing king salmon. scientists point to the drought as the cause of these low numbers. those who rely on fishing say it's the right decision.

>> we are absolutely stewards of the resources. there's no way we can go fishing if we don't have healthy ecosystems and sustainable and strong salmon populations. >> the regulations will formally be adopted the first week of april. by the way, that closure will have big impacts on everyone from fisheries to restaurants. san francisco city college's board president has called an emergency meeting on monday to discuss the extremely cold temperatures inside class r5078s. for weeks students at the school's mission campus have been going to class with no heat. some classrooms dropping as low as 42 degrees. the board president said boilers must be replaced at mission, john adams and the main campus and has prioritized the approval of $2.2 million for replacement and repairs. happening today, the san jose sharks are getting festive. the team will be celebrating

holi, a popular hindu festival, known as the festival of colors. the festivities start at 11:00 a.m. on barack obama boulevard in san jose. the events include food, music and color throwing. game time is at 7:30. the sharks fashion off against the minnesota wild. there will be another holi festival going on not far from the s.a.p. center. this will be at the discovery meadow in san jose. it's being put on by the association of indo americans. nbc bay area is a proud sponsor of the event. also happening today, a celebration of trees at a popular peninsula park in san brewer in at juniper serra park, free event begins at 9:00 a.m. organizers say spotty rain may impact the event. speaking of spotty rain, it's time to check in with

cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. it was nice to wake up to dry pavement this morning. >> i was stepping out the door like, is it raining? do i need to bring heavier gear. it was a pretty calm morning, just what we need for sat, for people waking up at home. lots going on in the bay area. i heard that hayward, along with somebody else i know, is having a birthday today. hayward has their 147th birthday celebration today. i believe it starts at 11:00 a.m. you're in the clear until then. bring another layer and umbrella to keep you safe from the spotty showers that we will see later this afternoon. i know it's the weekend, lots going on, but we do remain under this flood watch for the bay area. look at that, entire bay area wide, we have this with us through tomorrow morning. even though we're not getting heavy downpours today, we could see the localized runoff where the storm drains haven't been cleared. i'll be keeping an eye on those

creeks an streams. a couple that are keeping my attention, of course, the russian river in guerneville and a couple in the south bay like the san lorenzo river, and the baja river is having issues because of that levee breach. turn around, don't drown. you saw what happened to that fedex truck. you don't want to make it halfway and run into heavier issues. be careful of that. i don't want to say the weekend, the next couple days are rain-free. we have another second atmospheric river on the way. i'll get to your timing on that in just a few. not only does the flood watch linger in the bay area, look at the extend in the green from the foothills into the central valley. we're looking at the atmospheric river we saw in the last couple days be a little bit of a warmer system. it's bringing concerns of snowmelt on top of the heavy snowpack we've gotten in the

sierra. speaking of the sierra, the pink on your screen is the winter storm warning in effect at least through tomorrow morning. it could be extended as we get that next round of rain. look at me, i'm plaching the drought monitor map today. i wanted to talk about this. that heavy rain has brought a lot of issues. there is a silver lining to this. it's we have been drought-free, declared drought-free through the central coast and the sierra. we remain in the dry category. i think if not this thursday when the drought monitor comes out, next thursday the bay area could be declared drought free, and that is a very big reason to celebrate. if you have anything to celebrate today, we have spotty rain over the north bay, santa rosa, napa around 10:30. more widespread by 12:00, 1:00. mostly cloud cover as we go into saturday afternoon with another round of rain coming in the overnight hours in the north

"today in the bay's" laura garcia has a look at her story. >> reporter: when darlene sees a need, she doesn't just sit on the sideline, she jumps into action. she started what she calls the farmworker caravan during the height of the pandemic. >> originally when the pandemic started, everybody was talking about essential workers, and nobody was talking about the farmworkers. everybody was sitting at home eating, and they didn't think about where their food was coming from. their starm workers never stopped working oopsz. they work every day all the time for all of us to be eating. >> reporter: it led to bags and bags of essential supplies driven to farmworkers. >> toilet paper, beans and rice.

good morning. it is saturday, march 11th, 7:29, as we take this live look outside. brave surfers headed out on a gloomy morning. it's sure nice to have the cloud cover and no flooded roadways across the bay area. we did learn that highway 1 had closed because of a mudslide. we just learned it's reopened. thank you for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel joins us with a peek at your microclimate forecast. you're kind of saying enjoy the break because scattered showers will be returning essentially. >> yeah, some people at this time, 7:30, could step out and not see any rain at all. on storm ranger, most of the activity we're seeing is staying north of the golden gate bridge. remember, you can see storm ranger right on your phone by opening it up and track the rain

in your neighborhood and when it will leave so you can finally get out the door. in santa rosa, rohnert park and napa valley, pushing into areas of vacaville as well. like i was saying, if you want to step out the door this morning in campbell for a little bit of a run, comfortable conditions in the 50s and 60s. that rain does return for the afternoon. i'll take you through the timing of today's showers, tomorrow's heavier downpours and the second atmospheric river. the timing of that and where the heaviest impacts will be. back to you. >> cinthia, we'll see you soon, thanks. many people living in the town of pajaro south of watsonville were evacuated overnight after a levee breach. you can see the monterey county sheriff's department went door to door telling people they had to get out. many people already evacuated yesterday during the storm. but then the orders turned into warnings as the rain tapered off. then those evacuation orders were reinstated around 1:00 this

happen. no word on when the permanent work is to begin. it is suspected that yesterday's overnight storm caused a deadly roof collapse at a peet's coffee distribution warehouse. our nbc bay area sky ranger capturing the aftermath. the collapse happened early yesterday morning. we learned the man who died was 57-year-old martin gonzalez. he was inside an office preparing for his crew to arrive at the time of the collapse. we spoke with his wife who told us gonzalez was a father, a grandfather and a longtime be loved employee of peet's. >> translator: everything. i'm going to miss his company, going to mass with him and being with him all the time. i was with him all the time and him with me. >> oakland fire is investigating

the collapse. while they cannot say for sure the cause, they do say rain likely was a factor. another problem that storm was this, flooded roads. a large swath of interstate 580 closed for hours in both directions in oakland. the road is back open this morning. a similar situation on 101 in gilroy which also is now back open. drivers surely spent yesterday morning trying to take side streets to get around the closure, only to find them flooded as well. >> be on another road with a bunch of other cars, it would update, and everyone would pull away because the new route would close. that happened about three times. we just gave up. we're going back. in the santa cruz mountains this landslide caught on camera, you can see the trees, the mud, power lines all coming down in

corralitos. this massive tree crashed into four cars near san francisco's panhandle according to a city park ranger. no one was in any of the cars when that tree came crashing down. the entire state was pounded by heavy rain. this is video in kern ville where the kern river flooded. in spring vale the town was under evacuation orders where officials warning floods could be catastrophic. they sure look that way. no telling yet what kind of damage the storm caused. water rushed from the orville dam. it's the second time water has been released since a flooding crisis collapsed the spill way forcing thousands to evacuate. lake orville is the second largest lake in our state. after years of drought, water has risen 180 feet since

december. the sierra also is getting battered by this atmospheric river. the area was hit with a mix of rain and snow and crews are still working to clear the main highways. both i-80 and highway 50 are reopened. chains are required on 50. caltrans says, if you're traveling in the area, be careful. >> walking into my house right now. >> wow! check this out. a snow tunnel leading to the front door of a home in olympic valley. snow piled so high that this person had to dig a literal tunnel to get inside. miles clark is a pro free skier and friend of the person who had to dig the tunnel. >> it seems to have come in a very short period this past month. it seems people are a little more on edge. you're seeing roofs leaking.

good morning. it's 7:42. in the north bay you might be hitting the road, taking 101 down marin and into san francisco. i hear there is a st. patrick's parade there. you're pretty clear this morning. cloudy skies, temperatures in the 50s. there will be rain moving into the afternoon hours. bring that umbrella. overall right now we're starting on a pretty comfortable start to the day and the temperature is going to feel a little warmer than they have in the days past, even starting to reach in the mid 60s in san jose in fremont, and we have mid to upper 60s for mountain view and up the peninsula. now, there is more rain on the way. i don't want you to put that umbrella away just yet. it will start around the north baby around 11:00. coming down with a little more intensity around santa rosa, napa, even stretching into areas of fairfield and concord today. remember, we are still under that flood watch through sunday

because there is more rain on the way, and it will be a little heavier as we go into the overnight hours. 10:30 tonight. so if you have any weekend plan ms. the north bay, bring the umbrella and the extra layer to keep you warm. otherwise, the rest of us seeing heavy cloud cover as we await sunday's rain showers. 3:30 in the morning while most of us are sleeping, heavier pockets around the guerneville area, even stretching down into marin, san rafael, san anselmo. we had the heavy tree come down on that one home earlier on the show. by around 5:30 when people are waking up getting their day started, there's going to be heavy downpours along the southern portion of the peninsula even into san jose and stretching on into livermore. that's kind of the fashion that it will be on sunday as we wake up and get our workweek ready to go.

there is more rain coming. here is a look at the second atmospheric river that is on the way. it will start monday night and start to push through into the bay area tuesday, becoming very heavy. look at the colors of yellow on your screen. that's where it will be heavily focused over the north bay as the atmospheric river, more snow and possibly more rain fall activity, snowmelt concerns up into the sierra. now, we are still working out the details on all of that, but there is a break in site, yes, there is, once we get through this atmospheric river coming on tuesday, heavily focused on the north bay as i was saying, 3-4 inches plus of rain in santa rosa while the rest of us get about 1-2 inches. san francisco's seven-day forecast, don't forget to spring forward tonight and get your gear, your home ready for that second atmospheric river. then we do see that big yellow ball in the sky as we go into the second half of the week,

welcome back. 7:49 on your saturday morning. wow, talk about gloomy cloudy skies over the bay bridge. nice to get a little break in the rain. cinthia pimentel says scattered showers today before the rain returns tomorrow. it is the best possible news for 49er fans. quarterback brock purdy finally had surgery on his elbow. the operation had been delayed because the swelling in purdy's elbow was still too severe. purdy's orthopedic surgeon, dr. keith meister was able to work on purdy's torn ucl yesterday. even better, he only had to repair the ucl, not do a full

reconstruction. a more involved surgery would have not purdy out for all of the coming season. with this operation done, it's suspected he will be back in about six months. yay. it was a big night for oakland high school basketball. the oakland high boy's team was vying for the d3 championship, while the girl's team sought to add the third straight title to their trophy case. the boys took care of business. the oakland high wildcats, oakland never trailed in the game and eventually won by a score of 59-43. their performance got the attention from a famous alum, nba point guard damian lillard played for oakland high. he sent the team this video before the game telling them what an honor it was to make the state championship. he celebrated their accomplishment on twitter afterwards. the girls, as mentioned, also made their mark.

devils slide between pacifica and montero state beach are back open. it closed earlier this morning because of a mudslide. caltrans cleared the mud and rock slide just about 7:00 this morning. all lanes are open in both directions. a santa cruz county road that completely washed away in yesterday's storm is now fixed, at least temporarily. you can see it here. those were photos of soquel's north main street sent to us by a couple that kris sanchez interviewed yesterday morning. they sent them after the six-foot culvert gave way and took the water main with it. hundreds of people were stranded inside their homes with no way to get past the creek yesterday. people in the neighborhood also received a water boil notice. a lot of issues there. the non-stop work overnight by those crews to get that pass fixed all worked out.
