impact of the damages from those slides. and mike is monitoring the commute hot spots this morning. >> let's start with how conditions are looking at this hour. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking the path of the storm and how long the rain will last. >> if you're up and about to head out, you might hit some areas of light rain depending on where you live. but i want to remind folks the rain is expected to ramp up. this isn't the worst of it right now. we are expecting for it to peak sometime between now and noon, so we're going to see some heavier cells move through. you can see right over san francisco, starting to see some moderate pockets. and then through santa rosa, light to moderate and widespread rain throughout. i did take a closer look to see the timing of when some of the heavier rain would be moving closer to the south bay. in santa clara, about 5:30, san jose at 5:42. once it begins to move through, we'll see cells of heavy downpours over santa cruz.
5:01 am
taking this through 8:00, you can see widespread completely, and the heavier pockets really start to pick up in the north bay. right around 7:30, which is where we have concerns, of course, of our creeks and river flows, through santa rosa, san rafael. there's a bull's-eye over santa cruz as well, so that will be an area to monitor. at least the system does move out rather quickly. this is what we want to see from atmospheric rivers. we can see around 1:00 we do have scattered shower activity through the north bay. then what will happen after the rain moves out is the winds will still be kicking up, take a look at santa cruz, morgan hill through gilroy, another round of showers around 5:00. so overall we're going to see a timing of heavy rain at times, and then it's going to turn into scattered showers. we'll go over the wind warnings and flood watches in a few minutes. we still have basically a full closure of northbound 680. traffic stopped once again. they were letting folks by the

crash scene. i'll show you where northbound 680 is blocked just shy of sunol boulevard. the deal is, once a tow truck became available, they were going to have it enter the freeway here and go the wrong way to get to the jackknifed rig because there's all those vehicles that you saw backed up. i'm hoping that the stopped traffic means that they have the tow truck available. i'm going to wait for the update, but i'm telling you, you can't wait for an alternate. you've got to take highway 84. that will be the key. i do see more traffic going that way on 84. i would advise against going through niles canyon because that is a windy area where we often see washouts and we saw that last week with rains coming through. i don't want to send you through niles canyon, but it's open right now. the rest of the bay shows a smoother drive outside of northbound 680. do not take that toward the dublin interchange. everywhere else is moving, but the ponding and puddling is

starting to build. more rain, more flooding likely, back to you. >> thanks, mike. in the north bay, some of the homeowners are enduring a sleepless night, bracing for the possibility of more landslides. >> "today in the bay"'s bob redell is where two homes have been red tagged and two more are at risk. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're on cooper drive in santa rosa and you see one of the homes is red tagged behind me, the other to the left of your tv screen. the question is for other people who live around here, they're worried that their homes could be next because of the hillside behind these two red tagged homes. teams from the santa rosa emergency services are monitoring the hillside, which they've been doing since the ground gave way during this weekend's storms. the two red tagged homes are now unsafe to enter. at least four more homes are considered at risk. one of the homeowners tells us she's worried the next round of rain will wash away the plastic

that's now covering the hillside and send debris toward her home. >> the runoff is coming directly onto my property now. it's slick and just comes off the top and it just -- it's just a huge runoff, like a waterfall. >> reporter: and this is new video into the newsroom out of western sonoma county. there's a mudslide blocking one lane of bohemian highway. this started unfolding around 2:15 this morning. there's another slide, this was yesterday morning, that swept across brett hart road in san rafael. a local contractor spent the entire day hauling all the rock, mud and debris. this is something that happened within the past hour, you can see there's trees, power lines down, a couple of miles from our location, at the corner of orchard and spencer in santa

rosa. once we're done here, we'll head over and bring you a report in the next hour. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that last photo looks like everything is all tangled up there. thanks for reporting that, bob. if your roof is leaking, you are not alone. contractors say that relentless winter rain is really doing a number on many bay area roofs. now, we spoke with the president of one pleasanton roofing company who advises anyone with a damaged roof to get on those repairs as soon as possible. >> it really depends on how long they waited. if it's right away, you could probably save thousands of dollars if you could do a minor repair, but if you waited a while or it's been there for a long time, it will be thousands of dollars. >> you definitely don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars. he says, also, he's seen a lot of clogged gutters which can lead to damaging rooftop leaks.
5:06 am
he says the best way to avoid the problem is to keep those gutters clean. the oakland zoo is also shut down today due to concerns over the storm. the zoo says customers who bought tickets will be refunded in the next three to four weeks and oakland zoo has shut its doors several times this year because of the weather. this included a sinkhole that forced the zoo to close for 35 days straight. you're looking at those pigs at the oakland zoo. they're enjoying the weather, it looks like. our nbc bay area app, you can track the rain with our radar and we'll give a head start and send alerts to your phone. it is a great resource as we get you through the storm. right now we take a live look at san francisco and san jose. you can see a few raindrops on the lens. and that rain is making its way through the bay area right now. meteorologist vianey arana is monitoring what's going on with the atmospheric river. so what are we looking at now? >> well, we're still going to continue to see heavier pockets
5:07 am
move in, and as we see the rain start to tally, because it's going to move out fast, it looks like it's good for us because we'll see less totals than we had originally anticipated. that doesn't put us in the clear for the potential of flooding because we've already seen so much rain, at this point the ground has nowhere to put it. let's take a closer look at some of the flood watches that remain in effect pretty much through wednesday morning. alameda, contra costa, san francisco and santa clara. but we also have some areas that are under flood warnings, which means the threat is imminent, and this includes this part right here, mendocino county along 101, this will be in place until tuesday at 11:00 p.m. we're monitoring streams, creeks and rivers as well. another area we're concerned about as well is the flood warning through monterey. this will be in effect through friday. this is because we're still expecting to see that system continue to make its trek
5:08 am
further to the south. at this point, any rain really just makes a big impact. in addition to flooding here locally, there's also the possibility of some flooding up in the sierra. there is a winter storm warning that's in effect through wednesday at 5:00 p.m., but because of this warmer storm, we're seeing more of a mix of rain and snow. and some of that snowmelt is coming down to about 5,000 feet, could cause some big problems, especially with such a crazy sierra snowpack at over 200% of our statewide average. so we're going to see how that plays out within the next couple of hours. also, the winds. a high wind warning is in effect for the entire bay area. we haven't seen the worst of the winds yet, but as the system continues to move through, it really starts to ramp up around 10:00, 11:00 a.m. the coast and hills have a possibility of seeing gusts upwards of 70 plus miles per hour. this is going to be in effect until 11:00 p.m. the biggest threat associated
5:09 am
with winds, which we have seen before, is a possibility of downed trees and, of course, the damage to homes as well. so power outages will also be likely, at least when the winds start to ramp up, we'll already get a little bit of daylight. so that will be helpful in that aspect. i'm going to take you through rain totals and how long this rain is going to stick around for, and i'm going to give you hope. we do have some sunshine, yes, i said sunshine, in our forecast. i'll let you know when in a few minutes. we're not looking at a sunny day for the tri-valley, but the rest of the bay is looking wet but moving smoothly. the peninsula and the north bay, more puddling and ponding. the green continues around the bay area, including the traffic alert. north 680 continues to be closed at about sunol boulevard. all traffic is going off this direction toward pleasanton where you have to loop around and take city streets to get
5:10 am
back over toward 680 around stanley, and you're going to have to use the alternate until they can get that tow truck to the scene to clear this big rig across all northbound lanes. now, chp did put the note in saying they've only got enough flares for the next hour. that's a tough one. over here in the north bay, rain on the lens. this is san rafael, moving smoothly, from santa rosa to the golden gate bridge. the bay bridge, lighter traffic but definitely those conditions are tough. back to you. happening today, san francisco leaders take up reparations trying to address the legacy of policies resulting in a lack of opportunities for the city's african american population. supervisors will review a wide range of recommendations made in a recent draft created by an outside panel. one of the ideas calls for each eligible person to receive a $5 million lump sum payment. now, that draft only covers certain adults who have

tricky with the system because people are saying, wait, it's barely raining. it's coming, i'm telling you. let's talk about where the heaviest of the pockets are right now. it's ramping up. you can see it right here just off the coast. but eventually this is going to move north to south, bringing with it some gusty winds. now, we are also expecting to see some of these cells begin to pick up, notice right here san francisco we're starting to get moderate rain. everywhere else the rain is pretty light. i wanted to turn your attention toward right here, you can see this activity picking up. if i kind of make this timestamp for boulder creek, notice it really starts to pick up at around 5:57. as the heavier cells move through, we're going to also see winds begin to pick up. that's another thing i'm very concerned about. i want to help you time this out because this rain will eventually move out at about 6:00 a.m., and you'll notice in santa cruz, i know santa cruz doesn't need any more rain,
5:20 am
we've had serious impacts out of the latest rainfalls, but it looks like there will be a stall-out until 7:30, we're still seeing pockets of times around that stretch. but also up through the north bay, the rain totals look to be the highest in the north bay. but because it's going to move out quickly, this is good news. we're going to see less rain than anticipated. right around 1:00, the winds will still be kicking up, but the rain does become scattered by the afternoon. so santa rosa, calistoga, napa. then we'll get a break, a little pocket of cloud cover. by the evening, so dinnertime, we'll get another round of showers at times picking up a little bit heavier through the south bay this time for san jose, morgan hill, santa cruz and concord and danville. by 8:00, a lot of this does move out. so let's talk estimated rain, because this includes the little bit we saw overnight, the north bay has seen a little bit of

it. we have a microclimate weather alert and we are going to be seeing rain ramp up. right now in san francisco it looks okay. we do have, for the most part, light to moderate rain moving through. at least one thing that will be helpful with this storm system is notice the heavier cells just off the coast. it's going to move by rather quickly. so let's see where we're seeing rain right now. santa rosa, we've got rain coming down. we've got a little bit of a heavier down pour in fairfield through concord, and then down through the south bay, this system that you see right here -- i should say this cell that you see just offshore will make its move inland through campbell at about 6:43. then around boulder creek, we're talking 6:30. so we haven't seen the heaviest rain just yet. once it moves in, it's going to ramp up. your hourly forecast right now shows the rain picking up in santa cruz around 6:00 a.m. and then it just kind of stays there and then gets heavier through
5:52 am
the north bay. santa rosa, san rafael, napa, parts of oakland will see these periods of heavy downpours at times through about 1:00 p.m., and then it becomes scattered, which is good. we're going to see the rain start to back off, we'll get clearing, and then the rain will move back into into the evening hours at around 3:30. 5:00, we'll get periods of downpours again, mainly for the south bay. then look what happens behind that. we'll get clearing and the rain model is showing less rain than we expected. the north bay is expected to get just a little over an inch, same for the santa cruz mountains, a little under 2 inches. still some of the higher totals through areas like guerneville, the possibility of 2 to 3 inches along with some of the higher peaks in the santa cruz mountains as well. let's talk about the flood watches that are going to be in effect, because this will be still a possibility as we are seeing rain on top of already

wet ground. we've got flood watches in effect for alameda, contra costa, santa clara, and we have areas where we're monitoring where the storms began several weeks ago. mendocino county is under a flood warning through tuesday. the russian river is expected to get near flood stage as early as tomorrow morning. monterey county already seeing major flooding. also still under a flood warning through friday. then, of course, we've got those slick conditions through the sierra. a combination of rain and wind and also snow. the winter storm warning will be in place through monday. speaking of flooding potential, san lorenzo river is expected to crest today just a little under the major flood stage at about 20.6 feet. it is above the flood stage of 16.5. this is something we've seen time and time again, which is why the evacuations happened just last week.
5:54 am
the wind gusts also, a big possibility for downed trees. around 10:00 a.m. it starts to ramp up around the coast. 50 plus miles. livermore, 43 miles per hour. san jose, 29, 30 plus. and then about 1:00 it still stays really gusty. it isn't until later into the evening, i would say dinnertime, we see some of the winds back off. then your seven-day outlook, wednesday and thursday we will get a break. we get sunshine. now, i know there's rain in the forecast for the weekend, but this is not an atmospheric river system. this is a weaker storm that will move in late on friday, bringing spotty rain for saturday, and also a slight chance for rain on sunday. the rain totals are not very impressive. now, on monday into next week, monday, tuesday, even into next wednesday, we do have a bit more of an atmospheric river setup, but even that one looks weaker than we've seen these past two weeks. again, wednesday and thursday, those are going to be your fun

dry days, then we get more sfot rain heading into the weekend. we're looking at the caltrans camera, which i had hoped would be clearing up. the vehicles are still there, stuck on the northbound 680. we'll take you to the map. the reason i hoped they would start moving is because we hear that chp has opened one lane now. one lane northbound, with hopes of clearing more shortly. i don't know exactly if it's going to be all lanes, but one is better than none. you see the traffic starting to trickle past the scene. castlewood/sunol boulevard, the jackknifed big rig blocking lanes. with a lane open, there you go, we saw it change from closed to the sensors. the backup is not quite as bad as it was. it looks like the freeway has reopened to northbound traffic. you know you can take 680 toward the dublin interchange. the commute is light right now.
