car fire in san jose. >> i thought it was just perhaps an overheated car, but it was indeed engulfed in flames. it's quite a distraction as fire crews arrive. north 880 once again back at speed up to just past montague. the distraction has cleared but it will still be on the shoulder. just north of 101. the rest of the bay showing a green drive. no problems this morning on the bay bridge. back to you. >> thank you, mike. in just a few hours, theranos founder elizabeth holmes will be back in front of a judge. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is joining us live. holmes wants to delay the start of her prison sentence, right? >> reporter: correct. good morning. later this morning elizabeth holmes is expected to argue before a federal judge in san jose that he should delay her prison sentence because she just

gave birth to her second child. you'll recall last year a jury convicted holmes on four felony counts of fraud and conspiracy for duping investors into thinking her company's blood testing technology worked, when in fact it didn't. holmes is supposed to report next month to prison for an 11-year sentence. she is asking the judge to allow her to remain free while she appeals her conviction, which could take years to complete. holmes' ex-boyfriend and ex business partner, sunny balwani, was supposed to report for his prison sentence yesterday, but a judge delayed his reporting duty while the government considers his appeal. in december, a jury convicted balwani, the former theranos coo, of a dozen counts of fraud. he was sentenced to 13 years in prison. >> so, bob, do we know how long the court has to actually respond to this new appeal by balwani? >> reporter: it has nine days to do so. if the appeal is denied, he's expected to report to a federal prison in san pedro down in southern california. >> we'll see how it unfolds.

thanks, bob. 5:03 right now, new this morning, police are searching what led to a deadly shooting in vallejo. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon on solano avenue. police say they found one man who was shot and later died at the scene. officials have not released the identity of the victim or a suspect description. this is the third homicide in vallejo this year. at this early hour, we are still trying to get to the bottom of an incident that took place on b.a.r.t. the transit agency sent out a tweet around 10:40 last night confirming a large police presence at embarcadero station. the station was reopened and trains are running normally this morning. we have called to b.a.r.t. to try to find out what happened. we have new developments on a bizarre story out of hayward. more than 100 cremated remains have yet to be reunited with their families. one family is speaking out. an oakland man says he hired

ocean view creations in december of 2021 after his father was killed. he says the business would not return his calls. robinson's family held a funeral without his father's remains. after he learned about 17 similar reports, he says he went out to look himself. the problem, the addresses he was given of ocean view's location was incorrect. it wasn't until july of 2022 when he says he found his father and the business. >> i walked into the gentleman's office, there are at least ten other boxes of remains sitting on his desk. he's sitting there smoking a cigar. extremely cavalier about the entire situation, like disrespectful. >> the alameda county sheriff's office says six bodies and 154 created remains were found in a warehouse linked to ocean view creations. so far only 15 families have

been connected to those cremated remains. the hayward business was suspended last year and its corporation license suspended in 2018. the california cemetery and funeral bureau is now investigating. it's been two years since the shooting at several atlanta area spas. eight people were killed, including six asian women. in san francisco, there was a call to remember them and condemn violence against the aapi community. that event was held at japantown's kabuki hotel. speakers include brandon tsay. the bay area native who died last year after she was pushed in front of a new york subway last year. her father said they need to all remember the lives lost. >> one thing that unites us today is that we are grieving. we are grieving the loss of people whose stories are now gone. another thing that unites us is this fight to have our voices

heard and to ensure that our stories are told. >> people who attended the event said they felt heard and left alone because the stories were shared. stars coming together to help those affected by the devastating flooding in pajaro. the tloeds will be donated to a local charity that helps victims. singer fernandez will do the same when he plays s.a.p. in september. this morning many people in pajaro forced out by flooding are waiting and wondering when they'll be allowed to go home. at this point, monterey county leaders say it's too early to tell people when they can return. officials are planning to section the community off and allow people back by a zone-by-zone basis. >> earliest i can say is sometime next week, but i don't think it's going to be more than a month.

>> the county says there are more than 300 people staying at the santa cruz county fairgrounds shelter and they're expanding its capacity. however, victims tell our affiliates that many of them are still sleeping in cars, paying for hotels out of their own pockets and desperately waiting to go back home. it is 5:08 this morning. let's take a live look in fremont as we get started with this weekend. i like to say friday morning kicks off the weekend. meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast today. are we going to see something similar to yesterday weather-wise? >> it's going to be pretty much a repeat but we'll be slightly warmer in some spots. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, we are seeing a few low clouds drifting by. that will be clearing out and tonight there will be a pub crawl happening in san francisco to celebrate st. patrick's day. and if you're going to be out late in the evening, it's going to be chilly, breezy, temperatures in the upper 50s at 6:00, and then heading down to the low 50s the later we go in

i don't know if i spelled this correctly for st. patrick's day. oakland, here we go. >> i love it. happy st. patrick's day to everyone as well. remember, it's st. paddy's day, short for patrick. we go over numbers. this is west texas intermediate, a barrel of oil. oil prices are way down and falling further. 10 bucks down in the last week. this is first republic bank, the san francisco bank has been teetering for a few weeks. but big banks came to the rescue, led by chase's jamie dimon. he and other banks joined together to deposit money in first republic. news accounts say other banks balked at first when he said let's do this, but then citigroup, wells fargo and bank of america all said yes.

now, it looks like most of your saturday plans are good, but early sunday, if you're up before sunrise, that's when most of the rain is going to be coming down. the good thing is that it also will be clearing out for much of sunday afternoon. so most of it coming through while it's still dark outside, and while most of us will be sleeping. and so we're looking at just this weekend, about a quarter to half inch of rain for much of the bay area. much more ahead. so as we take a look at our overall weather patterns, we know that we've had a la nina season, so what happens is that we have cooler than normal water in the pacific, the sea surface temperatures, and the tradewinds carry that cold water off toward the east and then they move over toward the eastern pacific. it just changes the overall flow of the upper-level winds, which carries our weather systems. and for us it was a very wet season. la nina is over. now we're getting ready to

transition to el nino, so that's warmer than normal water in the equatorial pacific, and that could possibly give us another wet fall season as we see the changes in those weather patterns, warming ocean temperatures, and spring storms may continue for us as those tradewinds weaken. but we are going to see as we head into the next several weeks, our outlooks show normal temperatures and rain and an equal chance of fall storms. so we're just looking overall at the weather patterns to see how things may shape up for us. of course i'll have those updates and let you know what's going on. mike has an update of the drive coming out of richmond. >> just wanted to show folks that you might have had a tough drive later out of richmond because of problems yesterday on the bay bridge. no ripple effect this morning because no problems on the bay bridge. a smooth drive throughout contra costa county and the construction is picked up north through sunol. >> thanks, mike. 5:22 this morning. next on "today in the bay," nbc

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san jose. kris, you're at one of the proposed locations? >> reporter: so i'm here at the station and the city of san jose wants to put 100 tiny homes at this location, and the state

just yesterday said they are ready to deliver some of those homes as soon as the city can set up water and power services. but a coalition of people, not just from this neighborhood, are fighting this location. they say that it's just not the right location. san jose mayor matt mahan says it will help the city meet its goal of getting 1,000 people off the street. >> we are not against the homeless, but it's not fair to take this away from tens of thousands and give it to 100 people. >> the outcomes have been fantastic. the neighborhoods they're in, they see the same or fewer calls for service for 911 and 311, so public safety. the neighborhood, therefore, is better off. >> reporter: so just yesterday governor gavin newsom announced that $1 billion state grant for tiny homes, 200 of them coming to santa clara county and san

jose. the county of santa clara has set aside $643 for helping the unhoused. it costs $65,000 a year per person in services when people are unhoused. that's emergency room visits, interactions with police and such. now, it is estimated that a half million people in the u.s. are unhoused and the trends point to more, not fewer, in the years to come. for some families, they say tiny homes are the first step off the streets into stable housing and then onto a more permanent living and working situation. in santa clara county, city team runs programs along with housing and the permanency rate is about 70%. one mother tells us why it worked for her family. >> when you've been in that cycle of shame and guilt and depression and all of these things, it's hard to get that courage to kind of step into that and know that you're worthy of all those things, like a job and a good life, a car. i truly believe the housing is a

297,000 on tuesday. today will mark day four without power or heat for many people. last night conversations got heated at a town hall in east palo alto. >> you really are looking at this through the long lens. >> local and state leaders wanted to give people a forum to talk about the situation and how to be better prepared. east palo alto, los altos, cupertino among the many cities with widespread outages. here's what pg&e had to say about the with winter storm's impact. >> you have to remember this is the 13th major storm we've had this year. the soil is extremely saturated. so when you get winds that strong, even healthy trees, huge pines came down and damaged our power equipment. >> the utility says this is the worst outage since 1995. happening today, the family of alexis gabe will honor her life. you may remember in december some of her remains were found in amador county.

police believe that oakland woman was killed by her ex-boyfriend and her remains were scattered. according to the "east bay times" more remains were found about ten miles from where her remains were first located in december. dna evidence confirmed the remains found as gabe. today oakley police will dedicate a park bench and plaque in memory of gabe. this will happen at the civil center park. this morning the city of antioch will be appointing a new acting city manager. city council placed the city manager cornelius johnson on paid administrative leave tuesday in a closed meeting. it's unclear where the council put johnson on leave, but now he's arguing the meeting may have violated the state's open meeting law since he was not in attendance. antioch's mayor, lamar thorpe, says he'll hold a special meeting to discuss the change in leadership. it will be at antioch city hall at 11:00 a.m. after being closed for almost a month, rangers are finally ready to open part of

yosemite tomorrow. the park was buried in a record 15 feet of snow. crews have been plowing roads, clearing rooftops there as well. they had mudslides there. there have been 22 rock and landslides through the park. part of the park will reopen tomorrow during the day. monday it will open all day and night. let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. for so many weeks we've been talking about people trying to go places like yosemite. is this a good weekend? >> it doesn't open until monday, right? >> so it gives you an opportunity -- >> fully open, okay. we're just planning, i guess. so this weekend there will be some breaks in the activity as we are going to see dry weather for today and tomorrow. now, sunday is when we are going to see more showers and potentially more snow. so hopefully it doesn't impact the road to get there. staying a little bit closer to home this weekend, we've got the sharks game happening tonight

and in san jose we're going to see still some great weather, dry conditions. temperatures in the low to mid-50s. and we also have a pub crawl happening around san francisco this evening. of course you do have to stay warm with the nice bundled warm jacket, but we are going to see temperatures quickly dipping as we go into the evening. and then tomorrow we have the st. patrick's day celebration in dublin, one of those hot spots to celebrate st. patrick's day and this weekend, saturday and sunday are looking good. saturday will definitely be the better day because your temperatures start out in the mid-50s, but head for the upper 60s. and we'll see some peeks of sunshine. there may be wet conditions out there on sunday. if you're going to sonoma valley this weekend, we are also watching out for some off and on showers as we go into the next several days. it will be much cooler by the end of the weekend. mike, you've been watching the roads. any issues popping up?

>> i saw some slowing on the san mateo bridge and we do see the volume jump up suddenly. there may have been a number of cars trying to get here considering yesterday was heavier and slower. but right now we do see a sizable commute westbound 92. there is a little slowing just past the toll plaza. it's possible, also, there was a traffic break for any sort of clearing of debris. we'll keep scanning the chp report. no problems reported right now across 92. that's been the case for the last five minutes as we've been monitoring that. the dumbarton bridge will keep you clear of that. we had an earlier car fire which may still be on the shoulder at north 880 approaching montague but no issues. the build for san jose on north 101, typical spots. remember the weekend, we have the full closure north 680 from 84 toward sunol boulevard. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up, a desperate decision now under consideration

the weekend road work on the northbound side. we'll check in on the bay bridge. no problems this morning, but we'll check. it is 5:44. the oakland diocese says it's considering filing for bankruptcy protection. bishop michael barber issued an open letter yesterday indicating he's strongly considering that idea. the possible decision comes in the face of mounting lawsuits accusing priests and others of sexual improprieties. advocates from the survivors network say the move would be unfortunate and unfair. >> it's not a complete surprise. bishop barber has not been proactively supportive of survivors and he's never transparent. so i'm sure this is agony for him to have to come out to admit that there are 330 cases against the diocese. >> a new statement law opened a

jingping, says he'll travel to russia to meet with vladimir putin. he says he's going there to help russia and ukraine find peace. america has discouraged china from getting involved on behalf of russia. china probably would like russia to succeed, because china looks at taiwan the same way russia looks at ukraine. janet yellin back before a senate committee yesterday where she faced questions about president biden's budget. she's also warning the world will plunge into major recession if america defaults on its debts. now, some republican senators who don't want to raise the debt ceiling are suggesting prioritizing payments, if we were to default. if we run out of money to pay everybody, we could, they suggest, pay social security recipients first. secretary yellen says that's not how it works. if anything, she says, we pay treasury bond holders first, and a good percentage of that is held by the chinese government. china first didn't go over well.

we're going to see some rain coming in and the next storm system won't be as strong as what we've seen recently. that's the good news. we know that it's coming on an already saturated ground after having so much rain this season. let's time it out. we'll start to see rain coming in late tomorrow night into early sunday morning. so most of us will be asleep at this time. at 1:00 sunday morning we see the first wave of rain coming in, and it looks like it gets heavier before sunrise on sunday morning. you may k awakened a little earlier if you're hearing the rain hitting the roof. and then as we head int about noon on sunday it's starting to become a lot more scattered and there's still going to be lingering showers here and there. so overall this weekend, we're looking at about another quarter to half inch of rainfall, and as we go into next week there will be more storms coming behind that, continuing into much of next week. so tuesday into wednesday, a new

storm comes in. on thursday some lingering showers. and then another storm coming in on friday. we're going to continue to see the active weather continuing and the possibility in total for the next week, we could see another 2 to 3 inches of rainfall and the sierra could see another foot to two feet of snowfall over the next week. now, if you were hoping for some warmer weather because the calendar will say it's spring, well, here's a look at livermore's forecast for next week. we'll only see a high of about 50 degrees on tuesday, and it's going to be in the low to mid-50s for much of the week. so, yes, spring officially begins on monday, and it's going to get even colder for the middle of next week. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the bay bridge. >> a lot of folks were nervous every time we mentioned bay bridge yesterday. today it's very easy. this is indeed friday and it's light at the bay bridge. good stuff across the span and
