right now. march 24th, 2023, counterstrike, america responds with rocket fire after coalition bases in syria are attacked with drones. at least one american is dead, what the pentagon is now saying about those attacks. star on trial, gwyneth paltrow expected to take the stand in her own defense as she battles a lawsuit over a skiing accident. plus, what the daughter of the plaintiff said on the stand about the video of the incident. and president biden meets with justin trudeau as a major immigration deal is reached, what they're doing to try to stop illegal crossings at the u.s., canada border. and friends without benefits, not everyone can be your bff and some friendships can even be harmful, how to figure out if you're in a toxic friendship and how to cut ties if you need to. good talker on a friday. we'll getgú to that a little bi
12:02 pm
later. we begin in syria where president biden approved a wave of air strikes after the death of a u.s. contract worker. >> the area targeted is affiliated with iranian backed forces. the pentagon believes iran is responsible for thursday's fatal drone attack on the coalition base. five u.s. service members and one u.s. contract worker were also injured in that attack. >> on friday a second u.s. military base in syria came under rocket fire and it resulted, though, in no casualties, and the white house called that attack, quote, totally ineffective. >> nbc news global security reporter dan delouis joins us now. the pentagon just held a briefing. what did they have to say? did they have any updates about the attacks and response? >> reporter: there were some updates the pentagon gave. they said that both of these attacks were attributed to iranian-backed groups there in syria, and they also said that in both cases the u.s. would reserve the right to strike back and defend u.s. forces, but there's still lingering questions about how that iranian drone was able to approach that
12:03 pm
base in syria and conduct that strike that left that american contractor dead and others wounded. here's what the pentagon press secretary general writer had to say about carrying out that u.s. air strike. >> these precision strikes were intended to protect and defend u.s. personnel and the u.s. took proportionate and deliberate action intended to limit the risk of escalation and minimize casualties. as secretary austin said in his statement, no group will strike our troops with impunity. >> reporter: so there you have it, the u.s. trying to really balance two things here. on the one hand, trying to protect u.s. personnel on the ground while not kind of engaging in some escalatory cycle with iran. >> dan, hey, it's savannah. i think the question on a lot of people's minds is does this change at all sort of the allocation of resources. obviously we've been very focused on places like ukraine, but any plans for this region? >> you know, it is interesting
12:04 pm
how so much of the administration's focus is on that war in ukraine, and also on the threat posed by china, but this whole episode demonstrates that the middle east isn't going away and iran is continuing to be a very difficult challenge for the u.s. and for its partners there in the region, and i think we're going to be hearing more about this in the future, but it doesn't affect u.s. military assistance to ukraine. i think that will continue, but it does demonstrate all the different threats that the administration is having to juggle right now. >> yeah, thank you for that. california is bracing for another storm early next week as it still grapples with the damage from this most recent storm. fallen trees across the san francisco bay area have damaged houses, cars, and created just a total mess on the roads. but all this rain is having one positive impact. california governor gavin newsome announced today he will roll back some of the state's strictest drought restrictions. let's bring in nbc news
12:05 pm
meteorologist bill karins, of course. it seems like, of course, a little bit of good news about the drought, which was a different big and bad story we talked about for quite a while. of course this does still mean some danger. tell us what to expect. >> the rainy season is not over with yet, and we still have very soggy ground. yes, our reservoirs are getting filled up, and that's fantastic, especially compared to where we were at the end of last year. this is the weekend forecast. the weekend is pretty quite. cascades are going to have a little rain. pacific northwest unsettled, not heavy, not floodingings but much of california is dry. sunday, kind of similar, but the temperatures are chilly for california's standards. only high of 66 degrees in l.a., 67 in san francisco. and here it comes, this is the next storm, this will come in monday evening, and then through the monday overnight hours. this is a pause at 8:00 p.m., and then as we watch the storm moving onshore monday night, then it's with us all -- this is not an atmospheric river storm. this is more like your regular
12:06 pm
common storm, but this one's going to have high winds with it, we'll probably see additional wind damage, hopefully not as bad as the last one, and then we're going to have to deal with really low snow levels too, for this time of the year, very low. the rainfall totals, the highest will be in coastal areas, when we get in yellow and the oranges, that's one to two maybe isolated areas of 3 inches of rain, and then the snowfall once again is going to be measured in the feet in the sierr. another significant storm. former president donald trump will hold the first major rally of his 2024 campaign tomorrow in waco, texas. it comes against the backdrop of several pending legal cases. that includes the one in new york where a grand jury is considering whether to indict president trump in a case related to hush money payments made before the 2016 election. there's also a federal investigation related to trump's handling of classified documents. nbc news senior washington correspondent hallie jackson joins us now.
12:07 pm
hallie, great to see you on a friday. there are several investigations underway. i didn't even name them all. so far mr. trump has used his social media channels to respond to those cases. what do we expect when he has this big rally tomorrow? >> frankly, kate, based on the reporting i've done i expect it to be sort of live and in person as these investigations, against what i'm told he sees as -- and he clearly does see based on his truth social, the rigged system against him. and he'll also go on the attack, i'm told, against florida governor ron desantis. somebody who he's also been going after on his social media pages online on his platform here. this is part of what donald trump did in 2016 and in 2015 in the days before he first became president. it was a kind of grievance campaign, kate, and based on the folks i'm talking to here familiar with the way that the former president is thinking about tomorrow night, he expect to make very good use of that big stage on offense.
12:08 pm
i say big stage because this is being billed as the first formal rally of the 2024 campaign. he got into the race back in november. here we are now, it is march, and he is getting out on the trail. in texas not a purple location, it's a deep, deep red waco, but significant nonetheless. >> particular play that part of texas had a lot of strong trump support. he's been escalating his attacks against the manhattan district attorney here in manhattan, who's got this grand jury that's considering possibly indicting the former president. what do you make of that? is that going to have any impact on that case? >> i don't imagine that it would, only based on the legal experts i've been speaking to that suggest that alvin bragg is going to do what he's going to do, setting aside and away from some of the politics, if you will. that said, it's not as though bragg's office hasn't engaged or hasn't had to engage with this request from house republicans. trump allies. to come and speak with them, come and testify in front of
12:09 pm
congress with bragg's office saying that's an unprecedented request, an unprecedented inquiry, and pointing to former president trump having said that he would perhaps be indicted on tuesday, kate. obviously that was days ago. that never materialized. you are seeing the former president escalate his rhetoric with this rather violent discussion on truth social talking about that if he is charged, if he is indicted by the manhattan district attorney, it could lead to potentially catastrophic consequences for this country, the potential for death and destruction, he said, and he also called alvin bragg a degenerate psychopath. it is a different level of rhetoric than we've heard from donald trump. >> we still don't know if that grand jury is going to do anything anytime. >> next hint would be next week. it's a black box for a reason, kate, that's what i'm told often. >> hallie jackson, thank you so much. great to have you. hallie will have much more tonight on her show "hallie

12:11 pm

terry sanderson both expected to testify today giving their conflicting accounts, and next week paltrow's attorneys will take over, at which point we're going to hear from two key witnesses who we haven't heard from yet, those are paltrow's kids, moses and apple. they were both on that trip, according to the plaintiff they witnessed the crash. still plenty to hear from in this case that is really just a he said she said. >> thank you for getting to the bottom of the go pro mystery for us. >> sure. there are more layoffs in the tech industry and a buyout for the scandal plagued electronics company toshiba. >> sorry. >> morgan brennan joins us now -- >> that didn't come out right. >> hey, morgan. >> hi, first to more job cuts, the global firm is set to cut nearly 20,000 positions. they come as accenture has lowered its annual revenue and profit forecast.

how is this even possible? >> well, you know, kate, it does sound absolutely impossible. i went into this pretty dubious. it is extraordinary. it turns out that teams around the world have been using ai to basically read images out of the minds of people while they sit in an fmri machine. if you train someone to look at photos, if you train the ai on these people's brain patterns as they look at photos, it turns out you can show them other photos and the ai will know what is being seen. one of these teams is in singapore. they were describing to me how what's really interesting is that each person winds up seeing things a little differently and so the results are a little bit different. have a listen to how they described it. >> so as long as i have seen it and you know the patterns of my brain, then the ai will read that out of my brain. >> yes, yes,k exactly. every time they say it's like slightly different, but also
12:37 pm
another very interesting thing is that for one, every subject was in different way. >> oh, wow, so this is how the different subjects produced an image in their brains. >> yes. >> wow. >> so when you look at the grounds, maybe i will think about the mountains and you would think about the flowers, and other people would think about the river. so that kind of imagination content related images can be different. >> really just amazing science here, but of course it has tremendous ethical implications. we know the commercial uses of this kind of thing are being deployed right now all over the world, companies are scrambling to use ai to essentially try to read your mind. that's what's happening right now, kate. >> oh, my gosh, jake, we are really looking forward to jake's

reporting tonight on nbc "nightly news" wherever you see your local affiliates. >> very fascinating stuff there, thank you. former president trump's attorney appears before a federal grand jury today in washington, d.c. his testimony had to do with the handling of documents after trump left office. nbc news justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian joins us now. who is this attorney, and how important was today's testimony? get us up to speed. >> hey, savannah, his name is evan corcoran. we don't know what was said behind closed doors today. but the fact that donald trump's attorney was testifying in a criminal investigation involving these classiied documents is a momentous development in this investigation. a federal judge ruled that the crime fraud exception applies here, and that attorney/client privilege could be pierced and that donald trump's lawyer could be compelled to come to this grand jury and testify, and what we believe the special counsel wanted to ask them about was the
12:39 pm
representation that was made by corcoran and another trump lawyer to the justice department. corcoran drafted it, another lawyer signed it. back in june a document that said they had looked for all the classified documents and they hadn't found anything. everything they had had been turned over. that was false. the fbi found documents including some in donald trump's office. who lied to the justice department? did the lawyers lie? did donald trump lie? and the real importance of this is that it shows that this case is not just about the mishandling of secret documents. it's very much about obstruction of justice, which makes it very different from the cases involving president biden and former vice president pence. >> absolutely, ken, great context. i also want to ask you about breaking news. i understand that an envelope with white powder was sent to the manhattan d.a. what do we know? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. we're just getting this in. what we're told is that this envelope was addressed to manhattan d.a. alvin bragg.
12:40 pm
it included a threat. alvin, i'm going to kill you. it included a small amount of white powder which was quickly tested and found to be benign. the nypd and fbi are investigating taking this very, very seriously. >> ken dilanian on that breaking news for us. president biden is in canada today. it's his first trip there as president. he's addressing the canadian parliament and meeting with prime minister justin trudeau. monica alba is in ottawa, canada, traveling with president biden. what have we seen and heard from the president so far? >> reporter: well, the president has had a pretty packed schedule so far here, kate n this 24-hour whirlwind trip to the canadian capital. he did wrap up addressing canadian parliament. as real pattern and tradition except for former president trump. president biden referred to the relationship with canada as something that has been incredibly important to him and
12:41 pm
one that the country has continued to work together on, even though of course there are some areas sometimes where both don't see eye to eye but nonetheless, they need to work together. here's a little more from the president's address earlier this hour. >> together we build a partnership that is an incredible advantage to both our nations. that doesn't mean we never disagree as any two countries will do from time to time. but when we disagree, we solve our differences in friendship and in goodwill because we both understand our interests are fundamentally aligned. >> reporter: one area here where this was a major pressure point was when it comes to migration and the northern border, normally we're talking about an influx of migrants at the southern border. canadian officials really raised the alarm about seeing an increase in migrants, not just from latin america but elsewhere coming into canada and then
12:42 pm
krozing over into upstate new york. now under a new agreement we're expected to hear about formally, both countries will be able to reject those asylum seekers and canada is going to be offering 15,000 slots to those who want to apply for asylum and refugee status in canada. an update to a migration agreement that exists between the u.s. and canada that's about 20 years old. both leaders said it needs updates and modernization as these migration patterns continue to change. >> monica, thank you. coming up, how artificial intelligence is helping doctors to test certain types of cancer.
12:45 pm
welcome back. march is national colorectal cancer awareness month. doctors say getting screened is critically important. >> and now artificial intelligence is actually being used to help catch potential threats. reporter gilma. >> during her career retired nurse felt patients feel more comfortable. she learned she had ten precancerous polyps. >> if i hadn't done the screening, i wouldn't have known.
12:46 pm
>> the goal of the colonoscopy is to prevent colon cancer. gastroenterologist says it's often a team effort, doctors and nurses keeping their eyes peeled, but during eper's screening, there was another set of eyes keeping watch. >> i have to admit i would have absolutely have missed a lot of them if i was not using the medtronics. >> the gi genius, new artificial intelligence helping doctors screen. it works much in the same way the technology in your pocket does. >> just like facial recognition, if it thinks it sees something that looks like a polyp, it will go and circle it for us with a big box. >> ai technology has recently been making headlines with humans weary of how robots are changing our lives. >> people have been complaining that ai is going to start driving our cars, it's going to be writing our term papers. it's really something that's revolutionizing medicine, really
12:47 pm
all aspects, and in the gastroenterology space, what it's doing is helping to provide already a gold standard exam and make it better. >> reporter: for eper, the screening offered peace of mind with the benefit of helping her speak with patients. >> it's nice to advocate back to the patients that, you know, colonoscopy is not such a bad thing, you know, it prevents cancer, and it's an easy test to do. >> medtronics gi genius was given the go ahead by the fda two years ago. a number of studies have shown it can help reduce -- one study published in the american journal of gas tree interrolling, dr. boxer says it's a real tool for cancer prevention. it won't replace a real life doctor but it can serve as critical backup. >> people get tired. doctors get tired. the computer doesn't get tired. the computer's always watching. >> gilma avalos.
12:48 pm
>> that is so cool. now let's get your mental health check. we're tackling toxic friendships. it can be difficult to identify warning signs. >> but once a friendship takes that toxic turn ignoring how the other person makes you feel can take a toll on you and how you interact with other people. here with us licensed clinical social work kelly kitley. we throw around the term toxic, but what is afk toxic friendshi? >> so oftentimes it's spending time in our minds evaluating how that person makes us feel. oftentimes when we are with somebody else, we want to leave feeling better after we've spent time with that person, and if we're feeling worse than we showed up or we're recognizing that we're having some anxiety around having coffee or meeting up with a friend, it might be time to pause and take a look at that relationship.
12:49 pm
>> how can this impact your mental health, spending time with somebody that that's kind of the result of? >> we as you ladies know have such little time, and so we really want to fill our lives with people who support us and empower us and really make us our best self. >> we have on the screen what happens if you don't, i guess, you feel anxious, you feel upset about how they treated you. how do you repair it? >> do you have to leave your friend, ditch the friend? >> absolutely not. i highly recommend taking a direct approach. if we were honest with one another and didn't avoid and were left guessing what somebody is feeling, just say hey, i've been noticing you've been a little distance. is everything okay between us? oftentimes people might avoid. then just distance yourself a little bit. if it's continual and you're noticing patterns, it maybe time to change the relationship. >> what about when you're just getting start instead a friendship? any red flags, maybe was it's just going to be a personality
