words for what's going on today. i'm actually a school shooting survivor myself. it happened years ago. i was in eighth grade, and all of this is just bringing, it's just flooding back flashbacks for me and what i went through with my classmates. i was actually in the hallway during break when the gunman opened fire, shooting one of my peers and killing them, and just, after hearing the gunshots, i just knew to run and hide. i hid underneath the risers in my choir class, and those minutes and hours of waiting to be released by police officers. it just felt like a lifetime. >> according to the gun violence archive, there have now been 131 mass shootings in the united states so far this year. in mississippi this morning, residents there are working to pick up the pieces after a deadly tornado tore through communities, leaving rubble in its wake. the powerful storms taking at least 21 lives there, and one in alabama. and leaving a massive trail of

destruction. families who lost everything are now coming together. nbc's tom llamas is in rolling fork, mississippi with stories from those survivors. >> reporter: in parts of central mississippi, turn down any block, and you'll see home after home, business after business, reduced to rubble. and for so many, it's not just their town that's gone. >> all i know is i lost everything. and we really need help, man. >> reporter: d'angelo white and diamond walthington lost their mother, stepfather and brother when the storm tore apart their mobile home. danny was a welder. their son was only 14. >> she had seven kids, eight grandkids, that's all we know is our mom and dad, and they're gone. >> reporter: they're staying with family because they lost their homes as well. >> who we got now? man, it's hard. >> reporter: in all, reports of

at least 25 tornados in four states since friday. there's evidence tornado alley is expanding, with fewer twisters in the great plains and more in the southeast. this is the small town. rolling fork before and after the catastrophic ef-4 tornado. in many case people still can't believe just how strong this tornado was. they point to these two big rigs. they say they were parked side by side when the tornado came in. it lifted them up and tossed them to a different section of the neighborhood and left them like this, mangled on top of each other. so why was this tornado so destructive? it happened at night and was incredibly long lasting. its path a staggering 59 miles and tore through vulnerable communities. >> i got a bunch of clothes under the tree there. >> reporter: henderson has lived here his whole life. but when we met him he was looking for his home. it was right there? >> right there. nothing, man. >> reporter: all that's left, debris and a few beloved damaged

a community's heartbroken after three students and three staff members were gunned down at an elementary school. jay gray joins us. >> reporter: well, phillip, good morning, the covenant school is a small, tightly-knit campus where kids from preschool through sixth grade were starting yesterday, their last week before easter break. but this morning instead of vacation, six families are planning funerals. >> they're under a mass casualties alert. >> reporter: locked glass doors shattered by gunfire, a shooter crawling through the door frame, stalking the hallways of the covenant school with what appears to be an assault-style rifle. then minutes later. >> school shooting. multiple victims down. >> reporter: three 9-year-olds and three staff members murdered as they were starting their day at the covenant school.
