compared to what we have had recently. we can see the storm system, but it's much weaker as it continues to move closer to southern california, and it's producing thunderstorms in some areas, as well as snow as you go up in elevation, but we are getting a chance to dry out here and i think it will hold on for a little while with more sunshine in the forecast, but it's still going to be chilly. we are at 48 degrees right now in san francisco, and we will see the temperatures remaining in the upper 40s through about 2:00 and then slowly warming up. mostly upper 50s across the rest of the bay area. we will talk about the weekend forecast coming up, but mike, you are continuing with the closure of 580. >> the closure starts back here at lakeshore. this stretch of 580 inaccessible getting away from the bay bridge, south 880 or highway 13

are your options as far as highways to get around it after a deadly shooting over there on the freeway itself. we have another issue, this is also a deadly crash that just was updated in the chp report and it's out of antioch. the on-ramp to lone tree way is impacted by the pedestrian hit overnight. the update happened just a few minutes ago. highway 4 is clear through the area, so we will watch for the impact local traffic alone. the south bay overall showing some of the wet roadways still going on. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news out of kentucky where two military helicopters crashed overnight. it happened at a u.s. army base at ft. campbell. right now there are few details on the casualties, but several people are feared to have died. the military said it happened during a routine training this morning, so far, though, be the cause not known. back here in the bay area,

shocking allegations rocking san josé's police officers union. a union executive accused of running a drug-dealing operation within the union offices. >> what are investigators saying about this, kris? >> reporter: this long-time union executive is accused of trafficking drugs both from her home and the police officers association for years. in one case, some of the drugs she allegedly transported killed somebody. this is joanne segovia, and she is accused of illegally importing and exporting synthetic opioids to her san josé home and shipping them out of her san josé police officers's association office, even using some of the resources here. this happened over eight years' time up until earlier this year. she had 61 drug shipments to her

home from other countries, including china and hungry, and then used her office to distribute the substances. the auditor said the poa needs to be trance parent and fast. >> if the allegations are true, this woman was conducting some of her business right there at the sj poj's office. if it's true, she utilized one of the accounts for this. i think they need to respond to the community and answer some

questions. >> reporter: we are asking questions, and so far just got a statement that reads in part, the poj has been cooperating with the investigation. no other individual at the poj is involved. the poa immediately placed the civilian employee on leave and as is standard procedure cut off all access to the poj. we have pledged to provide our full support to the authorities. joanne segovia is accused of sending drugs, fentanyl, to alabama, and that shipment was linked to an overdose death there. kris sanchez for "today in the bay." >> these allegations are so shocking. thank you very much for the details, kris. it's 5:05 right now. new overnight, san josé police still at the scene of an unusual

standoff where a woman was arrested after throwing objects at responding officers and using some kind of liquid irritant. that's unclear. we know the police officers responded yesterday afternoon, and officers used flashbang devices to enter the home around 2:00 a.m. they told our photographer at the scene she would be taken to the hospital, first. and then suspects tied to crimes in east oakland often targeting people walking alone at night. four suspects were tied to the crime, all of whom are now under arrest. >> these four individuals were terrorizing innocent victims in our city, by pistol whipping them and robbing them of

tracking what we can expect. we have been dealing with a lot of rain recently. >> it's moving away. that's the great news. let me show you where the storm is now. it continues to move closer to southern california, and there are lingering showers but it's starting to clear up and that's going to be the trend for today. it's chilly out there, and temperatures mostly in the mid-40s all around the bay area as you get ready to head out the door. san mateo is at 48. 45 in hayward. as you head out the door in pleasant hill, definitely a warmer jacket needed for today. leave the umbrella at home. we will be in the mid-40s for the start. starting to see it slowly warming up around noon into the afternoon as we eventually make it up to about 59 degrees around concord and martinez. heading into the weekend, a little warmer. it looks like we can ease off on the rain chances, and we will

talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike as a look at where we can find slightly lower gas prices. yeah, three of the best prices in the state, in dublin today, 3.85 on amador boulevard. that's the best price we have today through gas buddy. san pablo, 4.09 at san pablo glass. and then 4.11 onshore line highway in mill valley. again, that's from our friends at gas buddy. kari is talking about the activity calming down but not cleared. the police investigation has cleared from east bay 580. we just learned about lanes reopening. there was a deadly shooting on the freeway last night, and on the roadways, the traffic report

we're adding another inch on top of that for san josé, more than an inch for hayward, oakland had 1.7. in santa rosa, 1.6. santa cruz mountains got almost three inches of rainfall. we are starting to see the snow wrapping up for the sierra, so it should clear up there as well. a much clearer picture for san rafael this morning compared to yesterday morning. we were at -- now at 41 degrees, and we will see the temperatures dipping a couple more degrees and then slowly starting to rise throughout the day. it will be clear and sunny. we can leave the umbrella at home, but you definitely need a jacket. we will reach 59 in morgan hill. napa reaching 57 degrees. it's going to be cold tomorrow morning, with temperatures again

back to where we are right now, upper 30s and low 40s. we are going to stay in;"■ this very chilly weather pattern. we are still seeing storm systems around the region, but looks like a lot dries up before it gets here. there will still be additional sierra snowfall, and right now the sierra snowpack still holding steady, more than double it's normal amount. we are going to see going into the weekend as well as next week, and so the storm system that skip appeared us could bring a foot or foot and a half of snow to the sierra. mike, the commute is pretty calm now? >> yeah, the situation is good now. a smooth flow, highway 37. come into pittsburg moving smoothly. this crash was blocking one lane as you approached the walnut creek interchange, but right now it's a smooth drive. all lanes have cleared on

has arrested an american journal since the cold war? >> yeah, the reporter was accused of espionage. russia's ssb security services accused him of collecting information about the activities of one of the enterprises of russian military industrial complex, but provided no evidence or further details of when he was arrested. does not have covid. it's not clear if this will affect holy week observances that start with palm sunday this weekend. ahead on the "today" show, keir simmons will report live from rome. happening today, antioch mayor is expected to provide more details regarding the police officers that have been placed on leave as part of an ongoing investigation by the fbi and contra costa d.a.'s office investigation into the investigation. the investigation is looking into crimes of moral turpitude. at last we checked, 8 of the city's 57 police officers were under investigation last year. the mayor will provide an update at 11:00 this morning. people in benicia are being asked to cut their water usage

after a pipeline broke. city leaders are announcing major water restrictions that require all businesses and residents to reduce usage by more than 40%, and in the meantime the city plans to accession water from the lake. today is opening day, and tonight the a's host the l.a. angels. >> bob redell is live for us outside the coliseum. fans are also excited about the new rules speeding up the pace of play. >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. major league baseball amended three new rule changes, and they have been in effect during

spring training. these are some of the rules. there's now a pitch clock that forces pitchers to start their throw within 15 seconds, that's when the bases are empty, 20 seconds when there's a runner on base, and the batter must be looking at the pitcher during the last eight seconds, otherwise that's a penalty. there's also a ban on the infield shift. there must be two infielders in the dirt on either side of second base. this should help the left-handed batters improve their chances of getting on base. and pitchers are limited on how many times they can pick off a runner, just two attempts per plate appearance. and then the idea is to encourage runners to attempt more steals to make the game more exciting. they have already seen the pace of play pick up and the length of each game drop by about 25 minutes. >> the rhythm and the cadence of the game is something we are

going to be clear. it's going to be about 52 degrees, so you need extra layers. wind gusts at 16 miles per hour, so the breeze will add a little more to the chill in the air as the temperatures head down into the upper 40s later on tonight. but we also have a lot going on in the forecast as we head around the bay area. also, there will be a sharks game tonight. in san josé, temperatures also in the low 50s to start dropping down to the low 40s. tomorrow there's a warriors game in san francisco. we will see temperatures there also chilly as you are heading into the chase center. our weekend forecast is going to keep it cool, even in santa cruz, if you are going there over the next few days, the highs will only reach into the upper 50s, and our mornings will start out in the upper 30s. if your weekend plans take you to tahoe, there will be lingering snow showers today but it will be clearing out for the weekend. we will talk more about that coming up. mike has been tracking how

further south, can you stay on the pavement. we will talk about the situation here that stuck around longer than i thought it would. we are following breaking news right now in minnesota where a train carrying ethanol derailed and several cars erupted in flames. these are live pictures overhead of the sight there. people are now being advised to leave their homes. first responders say more than 20 cars derailed. it happened about six hours ago. so far no injuries are reported and authorities say it's too early to know the exact cause. we will continue to monitor that. following the deadly school shooting in nashville, president biden said there's nothing more he can do with his presidential powers. >> he said it's now time for congress to act. >> congress is debating the guns issue, but unfortunately not inside the house chambers, they are out in the hallway where no

>> if you didn't know, how you know. we have seen winter get its grips on the bay area, and are we finally getting out of that today. >> it's been more than a sprinkle out there. but we have seen an improvement in the drought. just got the update minutes ago. i wanted to show you region wide what the drought looks like. we know last week we saw the major improvements where much of the central parts of california was taken out of the drought, and for the north bay it was considered abnormally dry where we see the areas in yellow, which is not technically a drought, but there was still drought conditions across parts of the sacramento valley on northward. this morning we are shifting it a little further to the east out of the north bay, not even abnormally dry conditions there. we have seen the sacramento area taken out of the moderate

drought, and we are seeing significant changes here. we measured more rain, and that will be factored into next week's drought monitor. we have seen san rafael getting over two inches of rainfall. most in the santa cruz mountains with nearly three inches of rainfall from the storm that just ended. we are starting to seat rain taper off for most of us. the sky is clearing and the storm pushing to the south, it has weakened significantly. today will be left with sunshine but still cold temperatures. this is well below what is normal. as we go into the weekend, we will see more weather like that. the cool temperatures continue, and there will still be storm systems moving nearby, but a lot

of them look like they weaken and dissipate before they move into the bay area. there could still be rain across the area, and especially the north bay where there's a slight chance of showers go into the weekend, but elsewhere we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds and the temperatures do not warm up much, not even going into the middle of next week. maybe beyond that point is when we will start to feel more like spring. mike, how sit looking in the south bay? >> looking pretty good. behind me, we expect to see slowing in this section, and for a short period of time, about ten minutes, i did see a lot of slowing heading up just shy of mckee here. there may have been somebody that slammed on the brakes or pulled over to the shoulder, but no incidents on the chp reports. it's the first slowing we have seen for the bulk of the morning commute. north 17 continues with the slowing because of the earlier crash and activity up towards the redwood estates, and it's

blocking one lane. most of the folks down there have options for watching the news, but as you head south, we are looking towards los gatos, and there could be a distraction for the northbound headlights, just a note there. no prices or problems, and around dalton and towards 580 is where the bulk of that slowing happened. there you go, slowing into pittsburg. the slowing typical pattern sorting out back to pittsburg. happening now, an employee at a san francisco dry-cleaner is in serious hot water this morning accused of planting a camera inside a clock in the fitting room. a woman alerted them back in november about the suspicious clock, and then investigators found five other customers making similar reports. and then like it or not, up
